It seems to cause more problems than it solves (one of those things that tries to fix something that isn't broken). If it works for you, then great; use it. Otherwise it's usually better to not install it and tweak in-game settings manually.

Dual booting Yosemite/Win10 on mine. Nvidia Optimus isn't supported so the only work around is to disable the 980M. If you do it via DSDT edits rather than the bios then it's ready and available when you boot into Windows, but shut off in OSX. Helps with battery life as well. The Intel 7260 isn't supported either so you'll have to replace it to get native WiFi. I put in the BCM94352HMB, you can find them fairly cheap. It takes some patching, but everything works but the card reader. Haven't really looked into that since I doubt I'll use it and probably would just boot into Windows if I needed it for some reason. Anyway, all the info you need is on the tonymac86 website under the laptop support section. Best of both worlds, really.
-
How's battery life? Think it's worth the trouble?
-
Just for the battery? No. If you want to increase your battery life under Windows you could just disable 3D acceleration in the bios and achieve the same result. Doing any gaming on either OS smokes the battery regardless. I just happen to prefer OSX as a daily use operating system and as an added bonus, because there's no choice but to disable the 980, I get an extra 1-2 hrs of battery life depending on usage (at the cost of graphics performance, though the 4600 by itself does OK). So for me, it's a no compromise sort of situation.jiexi likes this.

Awesome. How long would you say it took you to get everything going? Any little nuances P35X users should be aware about?
-
Took a few days to get things going well though I'm still tweaking a couple things. Using clover as a bootloader is pretty much a must and it has a bit of a learning curve unless you've used it before. The only real issue is the HDMI/miniDP audio is garbled when I connect to a TV, but they extend or mirror the desktop just fine video-wise. Once I get that figured out, I'd say it's as far as I'm going. I'm starting to work on a guide but it will be a while before it's finished. I can't think of anything that was too out of the ordinary. Read all the stickies on this page: http://www.tonymacx86.com/yosemite-laptop-support/ and take the plunge. If you get stuck, I'll help you if I can; otherwise, RehabMan on the tonymac forums pretty much knows *everything*.jiexi likes this.

Anyone had any issues installing an OS or booting off a USB thumbdrive after the new BIOS update? i ended up having to use a disk copy of windows to get it installed and this is the only thing i can think of i changed prior to the reinstall.
-
Which Bios? Did you try the thumbdrive on another computer? Is the bios set up to support legacy hardware USB? How did you make the BOOT drive? Windows 10?
-
Did anyone update SmartManager to 5.1.1 and try to turn the fan speed on Max? I had to revert to a previous edition ebcause it wont manually set the speed of the fans. Hopefully they udpated it again soon even though the older version is still preferable to me.
Also, just a FYI on some things I have experienced with this laptop so far:
It came with windows 8, i re-installed a retail copy of windows 7 ultimate and did an upgrade to windows 10 pro. tried to do a fresh install from there but ran into a bsod and a never ending reboot so I (luckily) was able to create an ISO from my android phone and re-installed a fresh version of windows 10 pro and the key was recognized with no issues. Everything has run fine so far. I had to bring out the OEM disc to manually install Smart Manager (only for the FN key Bluetooth capability, everything else, Audio, Brightness, worked without it) and Smart update. Out of the box I had to install some intel drivers (rst, management engine, graphics) but everything has run smoothly.
I tried buying two m550 crucial ssd's to run in raid and ran into an issue with one of the drives failing to boot everyonce in a great while (it was orignally ran as a raid 0 then subsequently divded back into their respective drives for troubleshooting purposes) before I just recently installed a m500 and an m550 to see if maybe just having the same drive or the one drive was causing the issue and have not ran into any issues since. I also upgraded the internal mechanical hard drive to a crucial m500 960gb 2.5 and use the mechanical in the hotswap bay.
The hotswap bay runs at sata2 speeds if you use it in the hardrive hotswap function, but keeping it in the cd rom drive hot swap function allows it to be used at sata3 for whatever reason.
The internal temps are atrocious when the laptop is sitting on my desk but the laptop cooling pad i bought makes a huge difference. I have not decided whether I want to re-paste it yet, maybe later in its life.
Wit winndows 8 i would get a bsod everyonce in awhile. Windows 7 was less and windows 10 is even less, surprisingly. If anyone has any questions I will try and check everyonce in awhile and answer them. -
My max fan setting won't work either. They removed it I guess. I kind of found it pointless since it didn't make things much cooler for me anyways.
-
Interesting, i'm not seeing the SmartManager update in SmartUpdate. Did you guys get the update via the gigabyte website? or is this a V4 and not a V3 thing?
-
Hi i just lost the power cube. Can anyone recommend a physical store selling a p35x near San Fran?
Or a store that would ship it around California?
Thanks!

I'm using v3. No idea why mine is different
-
Good to know about the swappable bay. Which cooling pad did you get? I got this one based on its stellar reviews and popularity ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NNMB3KS?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00) but am very disappointed by the results, I have noticed almost no decrease in temps. I am definitely sensing a repaste in my future.

Has anyone else upgraded their P35X to Win10, I've done so and generally been happy, but the major problem I am experiencing is with the HDMI out - not working properly, even with the latest intel drivers. The 2nd display struggles to lock on to the signal (1080p, 60hz) and is visibly noisy and unusable. Didn't have this problem with the same laptop, lead and plasma screen prior to the upgrade (nothing changed in that regard)... struggling for ways to solve it... any suggestions appreciated
-
I want to start a friendly debate.
but it occurred to me that
http://www.xoticpc.com/gigabyte-p35xv4bw3k2-eta-08142015-p-8259.html?wconfigure=yes
with a 3k screen and 2 256 gb hds this machine costs the same msrp as an aorus x5
it is essentially almost the same thing. it definitely has a few things different. It has a odd, or it has a 2nd hdd which is really good.
it has the same awesome screen. I believe it has one fewer m2 ssd slot.
What are the plusses and minuses? -
My two cents.
-980M > 965M SLI - I know on paper 965M SLI is supposed to be better but I don't believe it until someone gives me some benchmarks. SLI historically has been either buggy or unsupported by some games.
-P35X is thinner and lighter
-Aorus X5 has more memory slots if you care to have more than 16GB
-P35x has the swappable bay which can be a 4th storage option.
-P35X uses mSata - older standard, yes, but supports 1TB drives. M.2 max is still 512GB
-P35X looks normal and borderline boring. X5 looks ridiculous imho. My point on this is, if you ever had to sell a used P35x a few years from now, there is a much bigger audience than there would be with the X5. -
Ok well.... What is anyones best p35x 3dmark firestrike test? Mine is 9730.
Im still on thr fence with this. Im inclined to agree the reason is thr 980 has a vbios thst can be overclocked
I havent found a recent game that doesnt support sli othrr than arkham asylum. But ive heard the unreal 4 engine does not.
Overall less than 1 percent.
I didnt know about the msata. Right at the moment msata is larger but in a short time it will end up being the opposite.Last edited: Aug 26, 2015 -
I got 8384, on a v3(Haswell), out of the box. But like I said, I trust real life benchmarks over the synthetic for SLI. If you look here, you can see most games are almost equal and Batman plays better on the 980M.
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html -
I bet those 965M run cooler though. How are the temps when running FS?
-
Yes always in the 50c
It is almost a design flaw it has 2 fans both on gpus both with heatpipes to the cpu. So thr gpus never even heat up. Without oc the temperature actually drops in fs -
Yeah, see that's awesome. I'd totally sacrifice a little for better temps. Unfortunately, I could never get over the look. I work in a professional office, so the x5 is a little over the top.
-
Well it has 2 fans on the gpus but none on the cpu.
Whereas common designs have one for each
The 2 gpu heat synchs attach to the cpu.
Same as x7. So thr cpu is cooled semi fanless. But in short i would say temperature is an advantage of thr x5
I agree with you even though the graphics score is higher the in game is almost the same.
And i believe the 980 overclocks more if you flash the vbios. Wheres the 965 has no vbios flash not a very common card -
Agear and excalliber pc are both in fremont.
-
Same here, X5 guts in a P35 package would be ideal, though really, the only thing I feel I'm giving up is G-sync. Would have been nice to have in the P35. In the same vein, I wish they would quit trying to shove 3k and 4k screens in 15 inch laptops. I'd rather have a 144hz FHD screen in this size.
-
See I really like the 3k screen. Especially since the 980m drives it pretty well and it interpolates to 1080p pretty well.
I think we're a long way from 144Hz laptop screens on thin designs. The pcbs are just too big still and I'm sure they get hot. Maybe with a thicker laptop it's possible, but I'm never ever going back to >1 inch. -
You're probably right about the refresh stuff, but gaming on my desktop at 144hz is sooo nice....just wish I could get the same experience when traveling...honestly, I hadn't shopped for a laptop in quite a few years and was really surprised to find a plain looking laptop with a top of the line discrete card.jiexi likes this.

I wouldn't just say plain. Plain could be a plastic generic hp laptop. It's more of a sleek clean plain. Classy, but not warranting attention.markjk7 likes this.

lol, well, tomato potato on that one...seems pretty plain to me, but that's what I was looking for and don't consider it a negative...

How the f*ck did you get 9730 on Firestrike?!? Please give me your config/setup details!

lol... still VERY fookin' impressive mate!... So.... 965m SLI... how are your temps?
-
Hi there, on the verge of buying the p35X V4 today just want to know if the 970m causes less strain on the laptop than the 980m does in terms of heating. I will be playing just casual ESL games like CS:GO and LOL, I will be playing for numerous hours like 5 hours max, is this laptop going to throttle or what?

Hey guys im having a small issue, nothing ground breaking.
I bought a TV to hook up to my laptop and when I boot the computer the sound configuration pops up everytime. This has hapened on two seperate TV's via HDMI and I have no idea why and have seen nothing on google.
start up -> sound configuration menu opens up.
Anyone know a fix? -
Theres temps in that test
I have had the cpu throttle with gaming for hours but never thr gpu.
You can see in test 3 thr cpu can reach 95
But the gpu even overclocked doesnt get to 60
It actuslly goes down from idle during test 1.
But i am going to repaste.
It has no fan on thr cpu design it has 2 pipes from each gpu to the cpu -
so far no one has found a way to disable this. But this is intentional so you can switch the audio source quickly to the new source.kdawgie likes this.

Ordered the GIGABYTE P35X v4-CF2 today, should be coming soon wish me luck. Any tips on what I should do when I first load it up? Any drivers or softwares that need to be downloaded?
stamar likes this. -
im pretty sure you will upgrade to windows 10 and windows update
-
Do a small number of Windows updates at a time, and reboot after every driver updates. This requires a lot of patients, but too much of updates at once will most likely to cause crash or stuck at booting, or looping.
Regards. -
If installing Windows 10 from scratch one needs Intel Chipset software, Gigabyte SmartManager, and driver for Realtek CardReader. That's it to have everything operational. I am not sure one needs Intel RST if not building RAID. Drives are already AHCI and running at 6Gb/s.

Wait with new hdmi 2.0 that supports true 4k 60hz? Doesnt the v3 already do that via hdmi?

No the v3 is hdmi 1.2 4k @ 30hz only. I personally use the DP though for my 4k monitor @ 60hzArthedes likes this.
