Not really a problem if you've got it backed up on one hundred thousand CD-ROMs.

Hi, looks like only chance get 9.5 mm hard drive is from Seagate Ultra slim 2TB, because Seagate M9t is N/A for long time.

Amazon.com: Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB Portable External Hard Drive with Mobile Device Backup USB 3.0 (Black) STDR2000100: Computers & Accessories

Questions about installed hard drive inside answered:

Amazon.com: Questions And Answers: Has anyone taken it out of the enclosure to put in a laptop? i.e. does it have a sata port on it?

I hope this correct answers and drive can be mounted to laptop without problems.

    I'll waiting for more feedback.

    Can somebody confirm that?

    Thank you

Edit 1: I have found two listed product STDR2000100 ( from Amazon) and STDR2000200 ( Europe sellers). Don't know different yet.
Edit 2: - Found negative review from Amazon.uk for same type STDR1000200 -only 1TB version, no sata standart connector. Internally this is no longer a normal SATA 2.5" drive. The USB adapter is integrated into the board of the HDD.
Amazon.co.uk: Customer Reviews: Seagate STDR2000200 2TB Backup Plus USB 3.0 External Hard Drive - Black

ordered mine today from newegg. seen a youtube video of someone opening it and it is attached to an adapter so it can fit in laptops. 32mb cache though. I wish it was a hybrid. Bought it for $119

Just got mine today, boy that was a fast free delivery, and I took it apart and put it in my laptop. It works!

64mb caches are for hybrid drives.

yes, but I got the red one. that changes the serial number but it's still the m9t in there.
btw, if you have a very good computer already, ssd or hybrid drive; you really won't see a difference anyway. the only difference you would see is if you did a side by side comparison. it's so tiny that you won't even be affected by it.

Yes. If the enclosure is 12mm thick then there's a 9.5mm drive inside. The same basic drive is in the Samsung 2TB portable drive, which is less expensive.

However, it is unclear to me whether either / both of these external drives have the USB on-board or via an SATA to USB adapter.

I like the drive but it concerns me that is no simply available in laptop form factor. What are we missing here? I already have enough SSD for all the speed I need. I just need this one for data storage so I can free up the space on my SSDs. But I need to know its not going to fry my notebook..or sometin'?

it is in notebook form factor they just aren't selling it to the public so it can only be sourced from external drives. However you are right there could be a reason for that, maybe they aren't up to snuff for 24/7 use but, we would need to ask someone who has tried it.

Mine is still doing external movie server duty. I found mine much smoother and quieter than the previous 5.4k - 1TB Seagate drives. Shame Seagate discontinued the removable interface which was handy at times.

The glued on top looks very thin. Did you use heat to soften the glue or just rip it off? Price on US amazon up $5 since last week...

There wasn't any glue (or at least I didn't notice any). Just got to get something thin between the splitting of the case and pry it open then remove the adapter from the connection part of the hard drive and that's it. I kept the foil on mine but it is easy to take off and it doesn't leave any residue.

I just received mine. I should say now that is truly compact portable drive case!

Disassembled it accurate since I wanted to use the case for another drive. Removing the top using a credit card was fairy easy. Actually removing the drive from case was a bit tricky. I put matches in drive's mounting holes in the back to pull it out.

Big thanks to this video and its' author, of course!

In our country we can buy now Seagate 2TB slim STDR2000201. I hope, inside is M9t. Hope also, that usb connector is not permanently connected to drive like at WD passport.
    Any advices? Thx

I can confirm the 2TB spinpoint m9t drives on ebay are the legit real deal thing. They work flawlessly as media storage drives in my alienware m18xr1. I paid 135 each + 5.75 shipping so for both it was like 275 dollars total out the door price for 2x 2tb m9t drives and they fit in all standard 2.5" HDD bays as long as it isn't one of those new 7mm slim bays you see on many ultrabooks. If you want to be sure measure the depth of your HDD bay and as long as its a standard 9.5mm bay you will be fine.

Should I upgrade to 2TB HDD or 1TB SSHD? which one better choice? Or even do I need to wait for 2TB msata or SSHD later then?

If possible, a smaller SSD (256GB) plus a 2TB storage drive. If you only have a single drive, maybe a 512GB SSD hopefully isn't too far out of reach.
