What I meant is 16GB in two slots. MOST laptops only have two RAM slots.

Yeah, but if you need more than 16GB, then chances are you're in the likelyhood of buying a laptop with 4 SODIMM slots :p I mean, even some of the bigger Alienware gaming blocks have them now

most dual channel MC support 2 DIMM/SODIMM per channel. Any more, and FB-DIMM/Registered DIMM will be necesary (AMD tried developing a way around - abandoned it later on before Mangy-Cours, however).

It's just whether or not the notebook ODM includes the physical SO-DIMM slots necessary on the mainboard, either due to price (not likely), space (more likely), or market segment (most likely).

Not going to say which to protect the guilty but I walked into one of the fry's and bought enough to max out my soon to arrive w520 (4x8) and even a couple more more a friend. In looking across inventory looks as though most stores had several still in stock. Even without help it's one per transaction. Just go on different shifts and pay cash.

I have a Dell Inspiron 15 with i3-370M/HM57 chipset, anyone know if 8GB sticks work with this combination?

On newegg, 8GB sticks of desktop memory are $49.99 now, so I picked up a couple! I would have picked up an 8GB stick of SODIMM, but I really don't know if my netbook would support it.

Atom boards don't support those. I think they only support 2GB total on the older boards, and on the newer ones 4GB total.

It's the controller I think, not the board.

Well, since Atom is a BGA package, I'd say it's the board... Most were artificially limited by Intel to 2GB. Only recently has 4GB been supported. The controllers on the old 945 boards and the newer NM10 boards all have the ability to host more than 2GB. The 945 versions do something like 3.7GB, while NM10 may do the whole 4GB.

Mine isn't an Atom though; it uses a single core Athlon II. I'm actually giving my girlfriend a 4GB stick for her Atom netbook for Christmas.

Ahh.. Ok. I was wondering. While that's a nice gift, I really don't think it's going to work. Post back with the results though! :) I'm interested. If it does work, I might do the same for my grandmother's Atom netbook. Is your GF's a N4xx series or the new N5xx series?

Hers is an N570. I found out the other day that it only has 1GB of RAM.

Also looking into it, I found out that desktop motherboards with the same chipset as my netbook can run 32GB in four slots so that is promising. But I would rather not take the risk if that is all I have to go on since I would have nothing else to do with that memory.
