I hate AMD being so far behind Intel because that means Intel can just trickle the new technologies it (already) has to us. :(

I think you'll need more substantial info before you can start a Forget Llano, Trinity on the Way thread. ;)

I can't wait until AMD names a new processor "Vishnu". With a name like that it must be the destroyer of worlds... (Intel and Nvidia). Not much longer now, I hope. At any rate I'll be looking forward to Bulldozer in 2H 2011, and Bobcat soon!

Err... on a track, maybe, certainly not the original track. They've basically confirmed the rumored delay. Volume production in Q2 means that there's simply no way we'll see notebooks before Q3 (they still have to ship them and then the machines must be assembled). If they're really fast, they'll make it before the back-to-school season, but it can easily slip beyond that.

If it gets a realistic 6 hours that will be impressive, but if it only gets like 4, I am quite unimpressed... What do you guys think?

Only 6 hours? That's pretty disappointing considering that this is Ontario and not Zacate (i.e. the CPU performance will be much closer to Atom).

I agree. I was expecting more. They still have an uphill battle against the Atom if it can't get any better than this. At least the screen isn't 1024x600.

U270 will have an option for a 6-cell like the U250 and should also be compatible with a 9-cell you can get aftermarket.

The problem with a really cheap processor like Brazos is that instead of using the money saved on the processor to make better overall machine, what the manufacturers tend to do is try to save money on everything and sell it for as little as possible which typically means that the machine is garbage even though the performance of the processor is reasonable given its price. They can't do that with a $200 CPU because that processor alone takes the machine out of the "as cheap as possible" price range.

That said, I'm sure not every manufacturer will do that. We'll see some decent Fusion machines yet.

I understand that they have to be cheap since they're competing against Atom netbooks, but is a 6-cell battery with a decent capacity too much to ask?

The profit margins on cheapo machines are already nothing, adding a decent capacity 6 cell battery is adding insult to injury. Besides doesn't beat my Latitude 13 6 cell battery with only 30 WHr though the battery weighs like 8 ounces and is like 4-5mm thick..

And people wonder why machines are going to 16:9 screens and why various cheap computers components fail..

Oh, no, I can clearly see the large bezel, especially the tall top one. I was "measuring" off the "glass" portion within the bezel. Basically, unless the keys are a lot wider than usual, you can tell about how wide the screen should be, especially since it has particularly narrow keys on the left and right sides, and the screen looks to reach from about the QWERTY row of the keyboard to maybe the middle of the touchpad/tops of what looks like speakers on the palm rest. As I said, though, the perspective could be throwing me off.

Asus prepares 12-inch slate for CES 2011

This makes me really excited about a Fusion (bobcat?) based one.
I will happily give them my money, if it is bobcat based, we will have more battery life, good performance, and an Ipad like toy that will happily run win 7 and it's apps. Just wow :D

it kinda looks like they are saying they expect it will compete with gulftown but probably not with sandy bridge -- which is weird because sandy bridge is the slower/smaller of the two; gulftown is the xeon class 32nm and SB is the mainstream chips. FX is also expressly billed as sub xeon class.

I think they are trying to say that Bulldozer will compete with what intel is now replacing with 32nm gulftown -- which are the older 45nm xeon chips.

the relevant section from Bing's translator:
If you read the original vietnamese in the article, there are the same pragmatic and grammatical errors in the source.

It is saying that Bulldozer will compete with Gulftown and Bloomfield, which is good because as you say those will still be Intel's top CPU after Sandy Bridge's launch. Bulldozer won't start competing with Intel's mainstream parts until the cores are ported down to APU that will replace Llano.

The reason why the return of the FX label has some excited is because it was AMD's "Extreme Edition" brand back when AMD was able to compete with more than just lower prices.

The belief is, if AMD is going to try and sell an expensive chip, it's going to have to be a fast chip.
