hey guys i am a newbie here and i just created the account cuz i am so desperate here. I have a few questions that i am curious about.

1.) does anyone know the link to buy the a8 5550m es on ebay or any other site? I searched for the es but i am not sure if it really is indeed an es. Could anyone post the link plz? oh and it would really help if it is worldwide.
2.) does the a8 5550m es overclock work on windows 8? the a10-4600m isnt compatible with amd overdrive and pscheck only works on windows 7 :( so i havent been able to upgrade my os.
3.) can someone post some steps and pictures on how to change the cpu? Do i also need a thermal pad?

I am really tired of the enourmous bottleneck on this computer especailly in openworld games. I really wanna keep this laptop and dont wanna regret buying this laptop. I hope to change the cpu before the waves of games come. Plz guys need help asap! :( :(

Sorry to tell you, but it seems like you've already regretted buying that model. Even the processor you want to upgrade to is considered 'weak' by today's standards. Even OC'd.

    See:
PassMark - AMD A8-5550M APU - Price performance comparison

For less than $1K you can have a notebook with the latest cpu/platform which will give you over 2x the performance of the cpu you want to upgrade to.

    See:
    MSI GP60 2OD-070US w/ Core i7-4700MQ, 8GB, 750GB, DVD+/-RW, 15.6in FHD, GeForce GT740M, Win 8 at Memory Express

    See:
    PassMark - Intel Core i7-4700MQ @ 2.40GHz - Price performance comparison

I would suggest to stop throwing money into this system/platform and save for a real upgrade. If you can; sell your computer asap (to get the most money from it) and buy a model/platform that better matches your performance expectations.

On your current system you can change the cpu, max the RAM and even change the HDD to an SSD and it will still be a poor second, third or fourth choice when cpu muscle is needed. And in the end you will have spent close to what a new system (plus the $$ from selling your current system) would cost you anyway.

CPU/GPU upgrades are highly NOT recommended for major performance increases needed (as in your case). And if you think that a Haswell QC cpu is overkill: it is not. Depending on the game and the graphic card used; ALL mobile cpu's throttle gaming performance (as do all desktop cpu's too - which are still ~30% - ~200% more powerful than any mobile solution currently available).

This may not be the advice you wanted to read, but it is the best advice I can offer.

    Good luck.

I know several guys are doing pretty good deals on buying used MSI GX60 on Ebay for between 600-800 USD, than with A8-5550M ES CPU upgrade they have a pretty good gaming machine, maybe for the price the best value/performance machine. So it is not bad at all!

This is not relevant here, no sense to upgrade GX60 with regular A8-5550M and those who buy A8-5550M ES they will overclock.

So $200 (or so) cheaper and almost 1/3 the performance... and this is not relevant? Okay. :)

I do not get it sorry, you linked a laptop with GT740M and that measures about with Radeon 8750M. But where is that from Radeon 8970M?

I'm actually confused about everything, because A8-5550M not competitive with A8-5550M ES, Nvidia 740M not competitive with Radeon 8970M. And for gaming an A8 ES +8970M is much better than a I7 + 740M...

    CodeNameYRJ

That is just a regular A8-5550M, the ES versions are rare (so you won't always find it) and would go somewhere between $150-250.

I can't seem to get this to work, if I have the A8 ES in my MSI gx60 the laptop refuses to use the 7970m with all the AMD drivers I have tested, it seems the intergrated GPU works for me. I've tried using high performance mode in all the graphical options and individually on applications but nothing works.

Could anyone advise me on how to fix this?

Running windows 8 64 bit version.

You need to uninstall previous driver properly with Catalyst Control Center utility, follow instruction here. If it does not help, you will have to do refresh your PC or in worst case re-install the whole Windows.

I've reinstalled windows already and it didn't seem to help the issue.

Should the intergrated card on the A8 ES work? I've read in this thread for other people their graphics stays locked to the descrete card, its detecting my graphics as a 8550g in windows devices, and the processor as an AMD eng sample A1

Do I need a specific catalyst center to get the switchable graphics to work or any other drivers?

It could be a problem with my card, when I delete all the drivers through the catalyst control center utility, windows says it has detected a problem and has needed to stop the card.

Yes, 8550G should work as long as you do not run games. If Windows can detect 8550G, that is correct and eng sample A1 for processor also correct. When you run games, it have to switch to the discrete GPU (if drivers are correctly installed). It does not need any specific driver, however I would try with the newest Mobility 13.12 WHQL.

Thanks, I'll try it. I had tried lots of different drivers but when trying to force Anarchy Online into maximum performance mode it still used the Intergrated GPU, and in the switchable graphics monitor it was showing as Power Saving.

Catalyst Control Center cannot recognize some games, so you have to force maximal performance in the Switchable Graphics Application Settings.

Yeh it's the game doesn't get detected, but even when forcing it in the switchable graphics application it still doesn't use the 7970m. I realised the problem with specifically with Anarchy Online, should have tried other games before reinstalling windows like 4 times heh. Is there any other way I can force the discrete gpu into use?

I do not know other solution, but maybe from others exist a trick to use all the time the discrete GPU. Anyway fill out AMD Issue Reporting Form and hopefully they will fix the problem for next driver release.

Getting issues when I restart my computer anything over 3.3ghz BSOD my computer. Could this be a voltage problem? I usually run 1.206v at 3.6ghz. It's stable when i'm playing or stress testing just on restart I always get the Clock TImeout Error.

It is probably still driver related issue somehow, maybe because you have installed many drivers previously and that is messing things up. or your current driver installation on clean system?

It's now not letting me install the AMD SMbus Drivers. Anyidea what could cause this issue?

    My USB's now arn't working.

Edit: Fixed it by deleting the registry for Upper&Lower Filters.

i've used gpu-z and hwmonitor, but they don't seem to Show the right temperatures.(hwmonitor Shows different temperatures for the gpu and the cpu which shouldn't be)
    i'm using an AMD A8-4500m in a probook 6475b

    thx for the help -.-
now i solved my Problem by myself.
i bought me a IR Thermometer and measured the temperatures of the cpu myself :D
found out that the temperature HWmonitor is showing for the gpu is the correct temperature.which is way less than 100° C
it's from ~40 to ~64 ° Celsius, meaning everything is fiine.

    Hi,

I'm new here and, first of all, I'd like to thank Atom Ant for his useful threads.

I'm a retrogamer and I'm quite new to the "pc world" so maybe my questions can be a little "stupid"...
I got this Htpc and I like a lot his design ARCTIC MC101 | Media Center | TV Tuner and Recorder | Mini PC | Home cinema | Blu-ray | Silent. As you can see it runs a Amd apu (a10 4600M), and I'd like to know from Atom Ant (or everyone has done some tests) how much advantage I will get in games (10 fps or more?) if I replace the A10 4600m with a A8 5550M ES because I've read here http://forum.notebookreview.com/hardware-components-aftermarket-upgrades/720732-upgrading-my-weak-trinity-laptop-strongest-amd-a10-5750m-es-richland-apu.html that the a10 4600m is even faster than the 5750 in some games.

Thanks in advantage and sorry for my rusted english.

there is no linear dependence between cpu frequency and frames/second. You know, it is all about a code optimization. Overclocking up to 4-4.3 ghz will give at least 30 frames in almost all cpu intensive games up to date. In the same time downclocking to 1,5 ghz you can get 1-5 frames in the same games.

not at all. Ant used an old version of overdrive. The latest version works fine with a10 5750m. Max overclocking potential is 6300mhz(100x63). There is no difference.

You can ask me. I have done a lot of research with mobile amd trinity/richland and trired all possible overclocking modes. Yes, there is significant performance increase if you can handle additional heat. MSI GX laptops can handle without any problem 4-4.1 ghz. For more results you need to modify you cooling system. Some office amd laptops can bearly handle 3.2 ghz. Ask me if you need more information

I read that with overdrive you cant overclock more than 3.6ghz (5750ES or 5550ES), people in other forums use Pscheck to overclock more (some people overclocked to 4.2ghz depending only on temp)

That is not entirely true. 1. You must use windows in legacy mode, not in uefi mode. 2 You must use amd overdrive 2014, not from 2013. Then it works fine with 5750m. 3. You must use Baredit to fix you max frequency at desirable result. Thats all. I can not speak for the people who doesn't understand how cpu frequency are working. If they are not able to overclock the hardware correctly, i can not do anything with it.

Yes i know that you need to install windows in legacy mode because pscheck doesn't work in uefi but, are you completely sure that overdrive and pscheck do the same overclock? Others people couldn't up the voltage more with overdrive. I haven't my 5750ES yet, it's coming from china. I use baredit to stabilize in 3.2ghz. I read that baredit with 5750es is completly useless with ES processor, you only need to overclock with overdrive or pscheck and disable powernow in bios and that's all. Im right?

overdrive is much better. PScheck works terrible. You can use it only to lock Pstate0. Baredit is also needed to lock all cores at the highest result or you will get frequency constantly dropping to 2,5 ghz just by reaching 60 degree C.

Can you please do a little how to overclock the 5750es with overdrive and baredit? You dont need to disable powernow in bios? Why is necesary to install in legacy if overdrive works in uefi? How much did you overclocked the 5750es with overdrive? Thanks for your information

    1. disable turbocore with overdrive. 2. overclock with overdrive 3. fix max tdp with baredite 4 delete all pstates with psscheck except psate 0. 5 play. Overdirve doesn't work with uefi. It causes hang ups in uefi. My best result ist 4.4 under load and 4,7 ghz in surfing. Temp was about 110 C.

Then you need overdrive, pscheck and baredit all together? You dont need to disable powernow in bios? your results are with stock coolers? Whats about temp? You need to underclock imtegrated graphics? Sorry for all the questions i want to take it clear.

I modified my coolingsystem. At stock cooler noone will get more then 4 ghz under load. I also disabled integrated gpu. Powernow must not be disabled in bios. Overdrive can do it. But you can disable it in bios, it will not harm. You need all software together in order to reach max. result.

How do you disabled integrated graphics? With unlocked bios in "AMD POWER EXPRESS CONFIGURATION"/"PX DINAMIC MODE SWITCH"/"DISABLE"? If i do that i have a lot of artifacts in games and sometimes in windows too. If you have time can you make a tutorial step by step on how to overclock correctly ES processors? I will very pleased. Thanks

I am totally fine with that resolution. I do not need higher. Well, i do not know if the are any improvements, but i prefer to use only the dedicated gpu.

Squarll, in these Steps you posted, can you answer me some questions?

    Steps:

    1. disable turbocore with overdrive.
    2. overclock with overdrive
    3. fix max tdp with baredit
    4. delete all pstates with pscheck except pstate 0.
    5. Play.

    Questions:

    1. No problem
    2. Up or down the multi cpu 0 and vid cpu (v) only trying to get stable frequency?
    3. clear bits 30 and 31 on B0D24F3xA8 to fix top turbo only?
    4. No problem
    5. This is the best step :D

    Thanks
