I'd like to have this AMD prototype, it is 14" thin, full HD screen, 35W APU, M.2 PCIe SSD, 2x memory slot and looks good. Almost everything what I need, why not possible to buy it?

However, on HP's US site, all the non-custom HP Elitebook configurations currently have only one memory slot filled: "(1 x 4 GB)" or "(1 x 8 GB)".
I wonder if this will noticeably lower performance. Or maybe the lower-binned APU chips need less memory bandwidth, so dual channel memory is not noticeable. [For example, comparing GPUs of A10-7300 with FX-4600P, (553MHz/686MHz)*(10core/12core) might indicate it needs only about 2/3 the bandwidth.]
[As I understand, dual channel memory allows the processor to interleave requests to two memory chips, increasing bandwidth. Both slots must be filled with compatible memory. (But confusing the issue, within one channel, there may be dual-rank memory that is faster than single-rank memory.)]
(Single channel memory could be easy enough to fix if you are comfortable opening up the machine, grounding yourself and the computer to discharge any static charge difference, and installing another memory chip of matched manufacturer, timings, and size. However, not everyone in HP's business market will be so inclined.)
[Speculative brainstorming:
- Maybe AMD and laptop manufacturers have a business-first market strategy, trying to get Kaveri established as a viable media chip for business laptops, e.g., for editing marketing video clips, not only for consumer media/entertainment devices. (Recent news stories say growth in the PC market is more from businesses than consumers.)
- Maybe AMD and the manufacturers are waiting for chip fabrication yields to improve, as they cannot supply enough of the highest performance APU chips for expected demand, or at prices manufacturers are willing to target given the performance.
- Maybe there are other parts in that prototype that are not yet available in sufficient volume or low enough prices. (As others have noticed, 14inch FHD screen configurations are conspicuously absent from HP's preconfigured Elitebook 745 models. M.2 PCIe SSDs are also very new technology not widely available.)
- Maybe they are waiting for gaming drivers to be better optimized for mobile Kaveri. (None of the announced laptop models mention consumer gaming, and the available APUs, although more efficient, may not be sufficiently better than the top Richland APUs in games for manufacturers to convert their factories.)
- Maybe manufacturers are waiting for OpenCL2.0 or other software development tools. Until then, the HSA benefits of Kaveri are not so easy to use by business programmers, so the premium for top HSA compute laptops hasn't risen enough yet.
- Maybe AMD and the manufacturers are waiting for Richland-APU based inventory or sales to decline before introducing new models that could make them obsolete in the eyes of many buyers.

The waiting-for-production-to-ramp-up and clearing-out-Richland ideas make the most sense to me. Both would be good reasons for the slow rollout. Low yields would also explain it, but let's hope that's not the case since that could cause significant delays (and one of the few benefits of being behind Intel on process technology is that shouldn't be an issue as much). I suspect they already have decent graphics drivers since desktop Kaveri has been out for months, so that reason seems unlikely to me. Waiting for development tools seems silly, as then it's a chicken-and-egg problem, and it's already the most compelling mobile chip they're had in years even if HSA isn't well utilized yet. And if they're focusing on business first, we ought to see some business laptops with Kaveri in the near future. I think Kaveri is better targeted towards the consumer outside of a few business niches, since most business cases don't need the graphics that is the selling point over Intel, but I have no objection to buying business line laptops for personal use myself.
It's also worth noting that the A10-7400P and A8-7200P - the other two 35W parts aside from the FX-7600P - have also been missing so far. While some of the 19W parts should be able to compete well with at least the A78-7200P in graphics, the 35W parts are really necessary on the CPU side of things. Unless the A10 7350B is really good at staying at its 3.3 GHz max turbo clock. Which would be great if it did, but I'd expect the 35W parts do that more reliably.HTWingNut likes this. -
Sorry to bump this thread, but I asked an HP sales person when will the HP Probook 645 G1 be updated from Richland to Kaveri and he/she stated the new models will come out during beginning of August.
The sales person wouldn't provide me any links or documentation though. -
I have heard the rumored August release far too many times already, it's already July and still I haven't seen a Notebook with a regular Kaveri APU (non B variant).
-
AMD finally announced the 65W desktop A10-7800, available in Japan, worldwide at end of July. (So initial supplies are constrained. Japan may be the most power-conscious major market, with all the nuclear plant shutdowns, and summer heat.)
Optimistically, that is a sign of progress, and maybe more mobile binned chips will also become available in August.
Pessimistically, it took ~6 months improve from 95w (FX-7850K, January) to 65w (A10-7800, July) (-30w, ~32%).
So to improve from from 65w (July) to 35w (?) (30w, ~46%) could take another 6-9 months for wide availability. -
AMD are selling those 17W=19W APUs. Take a look at HP's Elitebook 700s, Probook 300s and 400s as an example. All of them were launched during June.

FX 7600P will undoubtly end up in the GX70. Just got to wait for R9 M295X to be announced in August first

Pretty sure the CPU in the 19W APU would bottleneck the dual GPUs, if the CrossFire works.

ohh, i can't read hindi(it's hindi, right?) but that Acer 15.6 laptop looks great, couldn't tell if it's FHD though.

* Acer's site says 2.0-3.2GHz, AMD's site says 1.9-3.2GHz. Is Acer getting slightly nicer binned chips for going first?

http://shop.lenovo.com/be/en/laptops/lenovo/z-series/z50-amd/#tab-tech_specs Looks like Lenovo Z50 might be an option in the future, it lists the fx-7300 and 1920x1080 as possible options. Hopefully the price will reasonable and accessible to us canucks.

Given the fact that it only has "up to 4 hours of battery life" (aka LESS around 3 hours of battery life) and weights 5.5lb, it would be a decent stationary multimedia laptop, but that's it.

Fudzilla has an
article
benchmarking a desktop A8-7600 at 45w and 65w and varying
memory rates. Mobile parts might be only a little slower than the 45w parts.
The article reports that dual-graphics worked, combining the APU with a discrete GPU, although limited to certain cards with similar graphics power. Their 1080p tests showed it basically doubled the frame rate of the weaker GPU.
The specs of the desktop parts look similar to corresponding mobile parts.

[p]Will dual-graphics come to Kaveri laptops? Will the similarity hold up?[/p]
[p][Aspire E5-551G: NotebookSpec's review (linked in this forum above, Google
translated) reported that dual-graphics was not (yet) supported by the
graphic driver software installed in the E5-551G (A10-7300 R6, with
R7-M265).][/p]
[p][Upgrades Unlikely: One benefit of dual-graphics on desktops does not apply well to notebooks: Desktop purchasers can buy an APU to start, and upgrade the capability at a later date by adding a discrete GPU. However, most notebook computers, especially thin ones, do not offer an MXM graphics card socket. The power system and cooling system are designed for the whole notebook, and both are minimized to save space, weight, and cost. So dual-graphics hardware needs to be built-in from the start.][/p]
[p][FreeSync: The Fudzilla article did not remark on the quality of the action.
In theory, no micro-stuttering or tearing should be visible on a
built-in laptop screen: AMD's FreeSync technology (now Adaptive-Sync
in VESA DisplayPort 1.2a) fixes the problem by varying the screen
display interval to match the frame production rate. This
technique was originally developed for laptops to save energy
(as
demonstrated at CES in January with Kabini, no discrete GPU).
In theory, this technology allows the screen to display
movies at their original frame rate.
In theory, this technology might also fix the micro-stuttering and tearing that may appear when using cross-fire to
alternate frames from the discrete GPU and the APU GPU (to spread the work load and reduce power needed).
In practice, it may depend on manufacturers to implement it.][/p][/th]
[/th]
[/th]
[/th]
[/th]
[/th]
[/th]
[/th]
[/th]
[/th]
[/th]
Last edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015 -

I picked up the HP EliteBook 725 G2 J5N82UT for $1231.55 with A10 PRO-7350B, LG 1080p IPS, backlit kb and Intel Pro 1500 180GB SSD. I really like the sturdy chassis, relative APU performance, backlit kb, IPS display and easy access to main components. I want to replace the Intel SSD for a current Samsung or SanDisk SSD. I already have Samsung 2x8GB DDR3L 1600 RAM and a HP Broadcom 2x2 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac + BT4.0 card and would like to get a WWAN card too.
It runs cool with light work, even shutting the fan off complete, but you may not want to game with it on your lap as the bottom becomes very hot when the APU is being stressed. The top kb side remains cool to the touch with some slightly warm areas. During the short time I've used it this configuration is pretty peppy. Its a great size for portability and even comes with a very small 45W AC adapter. The first unit I purchased and received had a (small but noticeable) dark blemish spot in the display so I returned it for an exchange. I am awaiting the second unit.
Edit: I found the J5N82UT for $1,203.00 shipped! This is the lowest price I've seen so far for this particular configuration. You'll save $24 or 2% with an instant rebate, ends on 8/29/2014 as compared to other sites selling the same unit.triturbo likes this. -
Congrats for your buy.
I won't ever buy an AMD notebook though. OEMs love to release crippled and crap notebooks when using AMD APUs.
Which I think it is highly unfair for consumers. -
-
It's rather ironic that the EliteBook 725 is shipping with an Intel SSD.
Good to see a couple more models, as well as Lenovo having one. But still nothing with the 7200P/7400P/7600P. I know it can take a bit to get OEMs to roll out products, but we're at a month and a half since the product announcement with no OEMs having announced anything with the high-end models. It kind of takes the wind out of the sails.
Oh well, my Core 2 Duo is still doing well enough. -
It appears HP has taken off the stock HP 645 G1 A10-5750m model, and only the configurable models have access to the Richland A10 APU.

I'm looking forward to the FX APUs too, they cannot come any sooner.
I've never purchased from them but they seem legit and reputable. Had I not already purchased my 725, I'd buy it from them just for the lower price. I had never heard of or purchased from the website I did buy it from only because they had it in stock did i buy it. -
Intel also pays for OEMs' advertisements... as long as they mention Intel's processor. Ever wonder why a lot of them feature Intel's CPU logo along with their products?
AMD doesn't have the cash to do the same.
EDIT: On a side note, if you look up Probook 445, it also features dual graphics though it only supports 15W APUs. Looks like Acer is going to get some competition.
I would've preferred to see a 35W APU by itself instead of a 15W APU + dGPU. -

Anyways, can you post a link to that dual graphics config you're talking about? I couldn't find it. They're using 19 W and 20 W TDP Kaveris.
Also, I didn't know AMD added 20 W TDP Kaveri APUs to their lineup. -
A shame that the display is limited to 768p though. Also, I forgot that they were 20W, not 15W TDP processors. -
And I know you mean "they cannot come soon enough", but to go with it literally, they could've come two weeks ago.
It is a shame that the ProBook 445/455 are only 1366x768. They're shooting themselves in the foot in the exact same way that they did with the 6475b. Micro Center had a very nice Trinity + dedicated GPU combo for a fair price last summer, but I just couldn't buy a laptop with a 1366x768 screen, even matte. I've had more vertical pixels than that since 2007. -

Anandtech did a sum-up of Kaveri notebooks.
AMD needs to change their marketing strategy for APUs. -
768p panels everywhere. My dad had an old 2005 Dell laptop with a 1440x900 panel. Too bad it was paired with an Intel GMA, and the automatic brightness adjuster is broken so the screen occasionally changes its brightness randomly.

Open an Excel spreadsheet on a Full HD display and on a 768p display an you'll know what I mean.
And instead of comparing pixel density with a 21'' desktop display, compare it with all the Intel notebooks that are coming out with Full HD displays, or with tablets that for similar price pack much better displays in smaller sizes. Or with decent desktop displays for that matter with 1440p resolutions or 4K resolution. -
Exactly. Once you're used to the screen real estate of 1080p and higher, anything lower will feel like a compromise.

And that is the reason why I now prioritize my laptop computer based on the display first, then CPU, then keyboard and touchpad, battery life, then etc. etc.
But I agree with marcos669, take my v5-122p uses 1366x768, but its IPS in an 11.6" size. I'm sitting 2-3 ft (1m max.) from the display and the text is sharp and readable. I believe the display quality makes for a better user experience.
Its not just the resolution either because high PPI displays have issues with sizing text in certain applications (OS). This is just one observation but Device Manager text viewed on a 1366x768 (V5-122P-0600) looks sharper than a 1920x1080 (J5N82UT#ABA) display for me. I'll see if i can get a screenshot.
Since AMD's specialty is visuals and graphics, why not emphasize display quality on select premium models? -
768p is fine for 11" and below. Bigger than that and it starts to hurt UX.
-
Also i have just realized that 1080p in 21" is a little PPI than 1366x768 in 15", but 1080p is also the standard resolution for 23" screens and i don´t see anyone complaining that is too little. There is also the intermidiate resolution of 1600x900, whick would be also nice

If you have a 1080p monitor, fire up 720p and 1080p Youtube video.
Emulating 1080p on a 768p panel is a bit tricky...
OR, you can compare any 768p laptop to tablets that have something like 2560x1600 resolution.
I remember years ago when I had to work on a desktop with a "low radiation" 480p or 360p CRT monitor. It took quite a while to adjust from 768p down that low resolution. -
Notebookcheck did a review on an 15" Acer laptop without the dedicated GPU (E5-551-T8X3): Acer Aspire E5-551-T8X3 Kaveri A10-7300 Notebook Review - NotebookCheck.net Reviews
Poor quality display and the chassis is what hurts the laptop. But I guess that's what happens when you shoot for bottom-of-the-barrel.
I'm going to have to see more Kaveri laptop reviews to see how power efficient the mobile offerings are. I've seen laptops that have significantly lower battery run-time compared to other laptops despite having the same CPU and battery size. -
AMD have launched Mobile Kaveri with FX-7600P leading the pack
