Can anyone test out AmdMsrTweaker on their Kaveri laptop? It has preliminary support for Kaveri. My replacement J5N82UT#ABA is not due to arrive till 8/1/2014 and I cannot wait.

It's a shame that 1280x800 went the way of the dinosaurs because that was more tolerable than being stuck with x768. It sounds like a small difference, but every pixel counts at that limited vertical resolution. Plus the modern x768 LCDs that I look at often have worse viewing angles than the 1280x800 screens of yesteryear. I still have my old eMachines M6805 around and its TN panel from 2005 has viewing angles that don't even make you wonder if it is TN. It's also less blue shifted because it uses CCFL instead of cheapo bluish LED lighting.

In desktop the icons resize with zoom in/out, if you mean the programs, you can´t, but maybe with the ClearType you can, i am not sure

Besida, all people doesn´t have the same preferences, i mean, maybe you need a lot of things in your work area, but that doesn´t mean others like it to, and also, that is considering that your main use is working.

But that is because they don´t want to make a proper 1366x768 screen (or 1600x900 in 17" laptops), but they could if they wanted to. 1366x768 IPS vs 1920x1080 TN? much better the 1366x768 IPS.

TN panels vary greatly in quality. Some are quite nice. The ones that are used in the budget notebooks tend to be the bottom of the barrel. They are the absolute cheapest screens available, chosen because the margins are razor thin on those notebooks. They make money by cutting corners everywhere.

I simply won't buy a notebook with a 1360x768 LCD. 1600x900 is my minimum. 1080p at 15" is a bit hard on the eyes but it still has its advantages. If you want a lot of screen real estate it's the way to go.

I am not really against TN panels. They really can be ok screens.

The problem is notebook companies usually want the cheapest panel for their cheap "value" notebook. TN is the tech that is easiest to make cheap and terrible. :) It's also apparent that LCD panel manufacturers have come up with new ways to make even worse TN panels over the years. And this works out because many people buying notebooks don't really notice/care anyway.

Though yes I wish everyone would use top quality no-compromise IPS panels. Interestingly, in the 17.3" segment there really aren't any IPS panels manufactured.

One place you definitely do not want a TN panel is on a tablet though! You can't compromise viewing angle on a tablet.

I recall months ago, someone once asked a Best Buy employee of why a $400 tablet had better display quality than a $700 laptop it was sitting next to.

1440p IPS vs 768p TN (with bad viewing angle, poor contrast, and blue tint)

I agree, I prefer 1280x800 to 1366x768. 800 vertical pixels is enough for 1024x768 windows with the taskbar still below them. And for a lot of tasks, you don't get much benefit from extra horizontal pixels, anyway. Lots of Web sites, for example, think it's still 1998 and limit their sites to 800 pixels width - sometimes 1024, but almost always fewer than 1280. Some do take advantage of horizontal pixels, such as Wikipedia and a fair number of forums, including NBR. But when I'm reading an article on a news site on my 1920x1200 monitor, sometimes I find myself thinking, "there's so much wasted space on the side. At least the extra 120 vertical pixels I have over 1920x1080 is giving me some benefit." Even 1280 horizontal pixels is enough for those sites.

Some argue that the limited vertical width makes it easier to read, but if the number of times I've spent hours reading articles and clicking links on Wikipedia for no particular reason is any indicator, taking the entire horizontal width isn't much of a deterrent if the content is good and the formatting is decent.

Like swaaye, I won't buy a 1366x768 laptop. Realistically, I'm looking for at least 1440x900 these days. Hint, hint, AMD.

Besides the HP Elitebook 725, 745, and 755's, the only other laptop "announced" seems to be the Acer Aspire E5-551, which was purportedly used to edit the video of the balloon launch event. The 551 may refer to a design weight of ~5.51 pounds. (Last time I checked E5-551 models are on Acer's main site, but not yet in the search index, and not yet in the Acer store site. A10-7300 and A8-7100 models are listed, with 15.6-inch 768p screens.)

What crap in 03-04? AMD was putting the hurt on Intel, bad, with Athlon XP and Athlon 64 back then. It wasn't until 2006 that Intel surpassed AMD with Core 2 Duo.

$1.45 billion is chump change compared to Intel's quarterly profits that are in the billions. Nor does it compensate for time that AMD lost.

AMD is simply behind Intel by at least 1-2 years. Not much can be done about that.

EDIT: FYI, due to a loophole with the US tax laws, companies can claim government fines as "tax deductions", which reduces the amount of income taxes they pay.

Interestingly even, the new AMD APU's also seem to have a better performance on 1080p resolutions.
Lower resolutions drive the CPU harder, whether higher than 720p ones focus more on the GPU... or in this case, the IGP/APU which demonstrated quite good results at 1080p (compared to Intel solutions).

Its plain sad to see manufacturers using outdated screens for this type of hardware... but then again, commercial marketing excels at getting people to buy into all sorts of nonsense without looking into other sources for better information.

Interestingly, I wouldn't be surprised if there is intentional vested interest due to popularity of tablets and mobile phones... which is why we keep seeing high resolution screens being applied to those devices and laptops being left behind so that people would focus more on the mobiles and tablets.

I still very much prefer laptops... and AMD APU's need better screens.

P.S. I agree that a 45W Kaveri should have been released for laptops.
Why can Intel get away with OVER 45W cpu's and AMD insists on 35W ones?

If I recall correctly, Intel measures TDP by the absolute max. AMD measures by average.

What really matters is their actual power consumption under identical loads.

If I should guess, AMD concentrate on 35W APUs to
Avoid comparisons with Intel CPUs since they would have the same TDP, and it ould put AMD in a bad light performance wise. Therefor AMD make 35W APUs to be able to cater for slight different niche, the slimmer notebooks with not so stellar cooling.

I think AMD would love to make 45W Mobile Kaveri APUs, but currently only MSI does offer them and that won`t be enough sales to justify a new production of better APUs.
But with the desktop Kaveri`s listed above, with higher clocks and higher thermal headroom, surely it can`t be that complicated to make a mobile version of it?! It is absolutely something AMD needs, perhaps it would but a stop to the bottlenecks the GX series from MSI is known for..?

Most people don´t know even what TDP is, so i don´t think that is the reason, it must be the way of measuring TDP as i said before.

    Check previous AMD notebooks.

I doubt it, after all they were the ones that have put the xxxx+ ratings on their CPUs.
They are in worse light as of now. Why? The average person would say why it can't perform as well as Intel? Putting 45W would minimize this gap, it wont be tie, but they'll get closer to their competitor. You are right though, having only MSI on board to put high end CPUs is not enough to justify the expenses involved. I still think that everyone wants to avoid spending money on AMD machine - both the consumers and the manufacturers, which means crappier cooling.

You stand behind your words, and I - behind mine :D

    The good news:
    I received my replacement J5N82UT.

    The bad news:
The replacement J5N82UT was missing the center rubber nub for the mouse and there's a spec of dust underneath the touchscreen. It's going back, and I may order from elsewhere. The heck HP?!

I'll have it for another day to do some testing. I keep having to wait just to get my hands on this computer. Also as i mentioned before when CPU/GPU are pushed hard (i.e. OC, OV) the magnesium case absords/transfer heat very well and gets very hot on the bottom of the laptop. The RAM, FCH and APU areas get freakin hot to the touch and I would not put that on my lap. Underclocking and undervolting keeps the case cool. Shutting off APM and Turbo is possible which results in a cooler quieter running laptop but then you'll be operating at 1.07 GHz on High Performance. Got to run.

    Supports Kaveri:
    AMD OverDrive 4.3.1.0690
    AmdMsrTweaker 1.1

    Does not support Kaveri:
    PScheck

Notebookcheck mentioned that the A10-7300 throttled (possibly due to low TDP) on the first Kaveri laptop they reviewed.

Seems like it like when the CPU is pushed it does throttle. When running the Microsoft Fish Bowl HTML5 test the CPU clock falls to and stays at 1.07 GHz. Disabling Turbo resulted in the CPU raising back up to and staying at 2.10 GHz.

With AMD Over Drive it is possible to over/under clock/volt the GPU and over/under volt and under clock the CPU.

    CPU multipliers are locked though.

AMD Over Drive reports that the CPU does spend some time in the 33x multiplier 3.3 GHz, however Task Manager reads 3.10 GHz at times.

I'm not really sure as I haven't made it that far. I was first learning the limits of the multipliers, VID and settings. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to undervolting and throttle detection. I'll try to reproduce the same tests as the notebookcheck Acer A10-7300 review.

Cinebench R15 CPU Multi 64Bit 141 cb (vs 139 cb)
I just ran CINEBENCH R15 64-bit and watched the 4 core clocks for the duration of the Multi-Core CPU test. Scored 141 cb, and for the majority of the test the clock speed fluctuated from 1.6 - 1.9 GHz. Task Manager reported 1.7 GHz, I'm guessing TM averages the clock speeds and updates slower?

Cinebench R15 CPU Single 64Bit 53 cb (vs 44 cb)
Single-Core CPU test showed an average of 2.4 GHz, with a range of 2.1 - 2.8 GHz and a score of 53 cb (MP Ratio 2.65x).

    Cinebench R15 OpenGL 64Bit 17.62 fps (vs 22.53 fps)
The OpenGL test resulted in 17.62 fps with average CPU core clock of 1.1 GHz. GPU fluctuated from 287.5 - 552.8 MHz averaging approx. 410.6 MHz.

    Cinebench R15 Ref. Match 64Bit 98 %

This was done on a factory non-modified J5N82UT, Single-Channel RAM, Intel Sandforece SSD, factory HP video drivers, etc. It performs similar to the notebookcheck review, slightly faster single-core CPU score, similar multi-core CPU score. OpenGL was higher on the A10-7300 because it was using Dual-Channel RAM. I'll try and redo the tests with Dual-Channel RAM later.

    Edit:

    PCMark 7 = 3223 score
Prime 95 Blend = Avg. 1.5 GHz CPU, Max 573 MHz GPU
Prime 95 Blend + FurMark = Avg. 1.1 GHz CPU, Max 292 MHz GPU

    Undervolted = CPU P-states, Northbridge P-states
    Minecraft = 1.3 - 1.6 GHz CPU, Max 556.8 MHz GPU, Max graphics, 1080p, 20-40 fps, Avg. 25 fps
Prime 95 Blend = Avg. 1.5 GHz CPU, Max 560.9 MHz GPU, CPU Temperature Max 60*C (vs 66.8*C)
Prime 95 Blend + FurMark = Avg. 1.1 GHz CPU, Max 291.7 MHz GPU, CPU/GPU Temperature Max 60.5*C (vs 69.3*C)

Cinebench uses Intel's compiler, so it maybe more biased toward Intel.

The best benchmarks would be real-world applications, such as compression, encryption, gaming (with no GPU bottleneck), and etc.

Is it throttling because of heat, or because of hitting the TDP barrier? Either way it seems pretty aggressive to drop the clocks that much!

The CPU/GPU temperature did not exceed 63.4*C during a 15 minute run of Prime 95 and FurMark (24*C room temp.).

While running those two apps, I did notice that HWiNFO64 reports:

    CPU CU0 Power 3.457 W (8.652 W Max) (1.348 W Min)
    CPU CU1 Power 3.477 W ( 8.691 W Max) (1.086 W Min)
    CPU Package Power 20.965 W (25.730 W Max) (9.504 W Min)
    GPU Power 9.961 W (14.652 W Max) (3.813 W Min)

IMO, It may be a TDP barrier of sort keeping the load balanced between CPU and GPU power. The way the power gets divided between the CPU and GPU under load seems to indicate this. What if anything can be deduced from this data? Is there anything else ya'll would like me to do while i still have the A10 PRO-7350B?

Is it any surprise to see a 19W TDP throttle? Considering the thermal restraints, this isn't something that only affects AMD chips but Intel's very own too correct?

With that said, undervolting did seem to help lower operating and max temperatures as well as lower voltage and power used by the system. After some tinkering, I even saw a slight increase in performance when repeating the tests.

I'm really curious to see what the 35W TDP FX-7600P is capable of now. If only someone would build a great product around it!

Intel gives manufacturers the option on when to throttle the CPU based on thermal or power draw.

There was a laptop with an i5 or i7 ULV that performed worse than a laptop with an i3 ULV because the manufacturer implemented a BIOS setting where the CPU would turbo for 20 seconds, and then throttle to save battery life.

Good for tasks that require brief, heavy CPU power, but for gaming? 20 seconds of 60 FPS and then it goes down the toilet until the CPU can turbo again.

AMD's big core Turbo implementation only seems to be active during light loads or idle, some almost unattainable specific scenarios. My Temash A6-1450's Turbo can run at 1.4 GHz all day, during 0.8 - 1.2 GHz 100% utilization, 496 MHz GPU core.

If the load is graphics intensive, the GPU comes on and forces the CPU clock down and it will stay there until the load is finished too. If it is CPU specific then the clock will average below the APU base CPU clock. While doing this the power consumed is divided almost evenly between the two halves. It does appear to exceed the TDP to 25W at times (i.e. playing Minecraft, or other GPU heavy task).

HWiNFO64 states the GPU as " ATI/AMD KAVERI SPECTRE LITE MOBILE 25W," maybe thats why power use totals approx. 25W for the package (including CPU GPU and NB)?

I can deduct that HP is pretty anal on nailing the TDP :) I think that it could vary a bit, but I could be wrong (or it was for higher tier parts).

Sure, but it's from manufacturer to manufacturer. Not that I'm protecting Intel, I just want to see the potential of this APU.

"Technically, the 7350B is almost identical with the consumer model FX-7500. However, AMD guarantees an especially high stability and durability for the business-oriented Pro-Series."

I can only hope that this "high stability and durability" means no overheating and longer APU life, and that FX-7500 would perform better given the same cooling (64ºC is barely warming-up).

Artificially crippled comes to mind, but that's not a surprise now, is it? :)

+1 especially if they leave the gate open (Intel MX/XMs can easily go 90+Watts once overclocked), wink MSI wink wink :D

If Carrizo comes with stacked DRAM, who cares about a somewhat anemic CPU if the IGP now has access to bandwidth equivalent or greater than GDDR5?

Only the Iris Pro with its L4 cache can compete, and even then it comes down to 128 MB L4 cache vs cheaper 128-512MB stacked DRAM cache.

People that put more stock in a faster CPU rather than a faster iGPU will still care. Its a difficult balance to maintain and you won't please everyone. Stacked graphics DRAM will not solve CPU deficit but It'll surely knock the socks off Intel solutions, until they make something better and repeat the never ending development process.

To put some life back into this thread here is something exciting.

I was wondering why after all this time there wasn't a single 35W Kaveri model available, so I checked ASUS' Global Website to see if they made a better AMD model than the already quite old N56DY (the one that actually has Wireless AC, something very rare when it comes to AMD laptops, and an 8750M) and then I saw this thing Notebooks & Ultrabooks - X550ZE - ASUS.

About time! It only took, what, a quarter-year?

How does the M270 compare to the 8750M? Although I suppose the more important question to me would be whether there's a non-glossy screen option. I see they do offer full HD as well as 1366x768, so that's a plus. Says it's only a VGA webcam, though, which would be really low-res. Battery's a bit on the small side, too, probably to keep the weight down, but that (hopefully) would be upgradeable or replaceable.

And yet again that fugly bump on the front that's probably housing the HDD. How hard would it be to move the HDD back a few millimeters and make it flush? I don't know why it bothers me so much but it does
Otherwise, can't wait to see reviews of this laptop. Currently got a Acer V3 551G sitting here for repairs, first AMD laptop I touch in a long time and I'm not impressed at all with what Acer did to this poor thing, although that's a couple of notebook generations ago now.
