i have an athlon64 x1, athlon64 x4, and llano x4. That last purchase was in 2011, and it's been overpriced Intel ever since.
$850 for the Y580 i7 gtx660m
$800 for the G501vw with i7 gtx960m
Back then, the llano x4 was $450 and came with radeon 6650m graphics, which I believe competed with the nvidia gt630m or gt540m
All you could get back then for $500 was a core i5 with intel igp.
let's get some midlevel gaming back to sub-$500.
Intel has the advertising dollars, so I expect them to bust out the TV ads again

It's gonna be a while longer before AMD releases the mid-level and low-end Ryzen, followed by the mobile CPU's (not even a wild guess as to when):

Another Ryzen box unboxing. http://techreport.com/news/31507/join-us-as-we-unbox-amd-ryzen-review-kit-live
-
I can't believe I just read such a silly comment, LOL. So, the CPU box is part of the "ownership experience" now? That's just ludicrous. No wonder the performance PC niche is in such a sorry state with this mentality floating around. When I bought my 7700K, I ripped the box open haphazardly, made sure it worked right and confirmed it was good enough that I was going to keep it versus RMA it, then tossed the box in the trash. I didn't even check to see if there was an Intel sticker in the box.
Who cares what the packaging looks like? All that matters is how it works after it is installed.
How about a nondescript brown box with a protective plastic shell around the CPU, skip the advertisement decal, and put the money saved into making better products, or passing the savings on to the customer?

well that sucks.
i think more people are buying laptops rather than desktops. They should be getting their mobile chips out asap. AMD is almost nonexistent in the notebook market. -
-
Well, their reputation will either get a boost or take on more damage based on what they do in terms of desktop enthusiast PC and those that care most about performance. If they don't get a win there first, they won't stand a chance in mobile. This is do or die time for AMD.
And, if AMD only plan to bring red-colored BGA filth to mobile, it probably needs to stay delayed for as long as possible, or perhaps never make it to production. Having to put up with that nonsense from Intel is bad enough. Hopefully, that is totally wrong and they will bring sockets back to mobile and cause Intel to suffer greatly for their idiotic design decision as a result of it. But, I hear rumors they are going to play the stupid card and follow Intel's lead on the BGA nonsense. I sure hope not.
And, kids are also generally more excited about the worthless toy in a box of Cracker Jacks or breakfast cereal. That just goes along with being childish and silly. I asked HIDevolution to remove the Intel and NVIDIA and SoundBlaster stickers on my P870DM3 before shipping it to save me the hassle. All those stickers do is look super tacky after minimal use and permanently damage the finish on the palmrest if left in place for a short period of time.Last edited: Feb 28, 2017 -
Or why I hate the word business and everything involved into it. AMD has to cash on as many platforms as possible even if that means BGA laptops and it's not like they don't sell. Whatever, we are not the target audience anyway. What about us? Anything from clevo? You know they used to build machines for both parties, but I guess cash ruins everyone.

It is too early to know, and too early for us to make wishes we may regret later. I need to see way more proof that it is worthy of being wanted before taking a swan dive into the abyss. It's a short trip from the frying pan to the fire, so caution is advised. Based on their horrible track record, taking a leap of faith is not a smart move.
I want to see all of the bugs and find out what losses of functionality may follow, what the catches are, if any, etc.
I hate the Intel and NVIDIA Mafia monopoly as much as anyone, but not enough to sacrifice or compromise anything to make AMD relevant again only for spite.Last edited: Feb 28, 2017tilleroftheearth, Ashtrix, Rage Set and 3 others like this. -
Ryzen is a huge step in the industry to make the AMD and Intel rivalry spark up again. However, let those who want to invest in Ryzen do so. By next generation, they will have worked out the kinks and really solidify what they want from the new platform. Competition a year from now will hopefully, be in full swing with performance wars and price wars spurring up and rocking the industry once more.
There was a reason why I kept a i7-2600K in my current desktop I own now. I really saw no reason to upgrade to a new Intel generation strictly due to the performance increases were so small. With my new Clevo though, the only choice was an i7-7700K and I know it will perform better than what I have now for sure! I just hope that in future generations for when I buy my next machine in 5 or so years, competition would have gotten so fierce, we would really see great, new innovations that we don't have today strictly because AMD will hopefully be competitive and relevant again.Atma likes this. -

I am not really a kid, as I just turned 49 in January, but I have always had a thing for case badges. Maybe its my OCD, but I like them
. Maybe it goes back to my LAN days, and carrying my tower to the events, and having something on them to show others what you have inside. I know I am a dork, but oh well.

This is the second person with a C6H that said it was problematic. A person doing an OC contest involving Ryzen and C6H said he was pretty sure the board was ****ed over at overclock.net...Rage Set, hmscott, Atma and 1 other person like this.
-
Pretty much makes sense. The "what they want from the new platform" part could be problematic. If it is not what the hard-core performance enthusiasts want, it could turn out to not be relevant. AMD have been content to take a back seat for a long time and they need to prove they are in it to win it. I would love to see a return to the days of bickering and bitter feuding over which brand is best and enthusiasts exchanging blows with phenomenal overclocking results from both brands. That drove excellence, but gosh... seems like a lifetime ago when things were like that. For some of the younger members of our niche it actually was a lifetime ago. Some were too young to remember those glory days, or missed the action because they joined the fold after AMD wimped out on us.
-
I mean I guess the community was loud enough to have AMD throw Ryzen into the market right? I mean they have a new CEO that needs to prevent the company from sinking so this is it. If Ryzen fails, AMD will cease to exist because they're on the brink of bankruptcy.Atma likes this.

I am growing weary of the limited sample of structured benchmarks. It makes me suspicious. Nice Cinebench scores, but I would like to see something else besides Cinebench and Passmark. I'd like to see things like wPrime, 3DMark 11, 3DMark Vantage and Fire Strike with more impressive extreme overclocked physics scores. Have we found any examples like that yet? I cannot view 4.0GHz core clocks as being an accomplishment worth acknowledging. That's BGA Ultrabook clock speeds. Where are the real enthusiasts results among all of this regurgitated marketing hype?
Edit: When I go to the search page at 3DMark, I find nothing for Ryzen-powered systems. Do I smell a rat? I don't want to see 8-core AMD CPUs running 6.0GHz returning physics scores that resemble a crippled 6700HQ. We already had that before Ryzen.
Yes. I don't want that to happen because we will be in the same place we have been for a long time with Intel. I want them to be successful. But, they still have to re-earn my trust and respect. They lost it a long time ago, so I am not going to embrace it only because it's new. I want to see phenomenal results before celebrating. If they can really put the hurt on Intel by one-upping them in performance, it will be reason to rejoice. I just need to see proof of that first. And, I don't want to see any cost-to-performance ratio analysis crap muddying the waters. This is all about winning... period. I want them to win and I don't care if their CPUs are the same price or cheaper than Intel. Bang for buck is dependent upon taking the victor's crown. If they don't do that, then they don't win at anything. They need to put their crosshairs directly between the eyes of Intel and let the price work itself out later. People that want the best will pay for it. It doesn't need to be cheaper.Last edited: Feb 28, 2017tilleroftheearth, Ashtrix, Rage Set and 3 others like this. -

Mostly, yes. I stopped being an early adopter quite a while ago. I got burned too often by letting my excitement cloud good judgment. I still make mistakes like everyone else, but I do try to avoid them. Trusting AMD (or Intel or NVIDIA for that matter) is nothing short of foolish. We need more proof that is not overshadowed by marketing hype and distortions designed to sell.tilleroftheearth, TomJGX, jclausius and 2 others like this.

Yeah, I am excited about that as well. I know my guarded skepticism may bother some people, but I am really excited at the possibility that Intel will finally have a worthy opponent. I would love to see AMD put the hurt on them in the extreme performance realm. We've been saddled with a one-horse carriage for way too long.
It does make me more skeptical the more worthless marketing fluff I read. Things like bragging about 4.0GHz, LOL. I mean, c'mon. Give me a break... that's a joke, and it must be a symptom of ignorance on the part of those presenting it as if it is some kind of accomplishment. It need to see at least 4.5GHz before I can see a good reason to stop and pay more attention.Last edited: Feb 28, 2017 -

At least they are doing the right thing focusing on Ryzen 7 first. That is what matters most and only Ryzen 7 has potential to make the AMD brand relevant again. I think they are smart in this respect.
Ryzen 5 and 3 will never be more relevant than i5 or i3 and then only to the budget-minded shoppers that want the cheap mainstream stuff for a low-budget build. Until Ryzen 5 and 3 are released to production, they won't be relevant to anyone.hmscott likes this. -

Sounds like a plan. I stuck around for a few more minutes to see if it would get more interesting, but not yet. Playing streamed game content from a Ryzen 7 + Vega-powered server using a Surface or MacBook Pro as the user interface might be cute for some people. Maybe you gave up too quickly, it seems to be moving fast enough for me... already 6 distinctly different presentations...and accelerating.
Maybe I am used to listening to highly intelligent people - sync'ing up with their individual pace - immersing my thought's in their thought stream.
Practice makes perfect... sitting quietly, listening and learning is a learned behavior, acquired through dedication and sacrifice.
Over the years I've watched thousands of these kind of things, gaining more or less little tidbits over time that add up to a huge base from which to help me make quick and more accurate decisions.
At least now I don't need to fly or drive over to the location to watch them. That's a huge time and cost savings. I used to purchase multiple thousand $ audio then video recordings of these technical presentations when they became available just to save the travel time and expense.
Now that it's freely available at my desktop, watching remotely from anywhere - multi-tasking - I can't believe our good fortune

My career has been built on listening to highly intelligent people blow smoke up my butt when they want me to buy into their new product, enhanced workflow or whatever snake oil they might be peddling. I like to think of myself as a highly intelligent person that is not interested in hearing about any of the theoretical crap. This applies to everything for me, not just tech stuff. I want to cut to the chase, see the numbers and know what the outcome is going to be. The hype is a waste of my time. While I do acknowledge good intentions and express genuine appreciation for them, those are intangible. I only can only measure and reward performance. I know some people enjoy the hype part of the experience or the theories that played into the thing, and I don't fault them for that. Just a difference in personality styles.Last edited: Feb 28, 2017tilleroftheearth, TomJGX, Raiderman and 4 others like this.
