HTC Vive Pro Eye hands-on: first VR headset with eye tracking
The Verge
Published on Jan 7, 2019
The HTC Vive Pro VR headset was unveiled today at CES 2019 and comes with built-in eye tracking. The device is called the Vive Pro Eye, and it promises to bring higher-quality VR experiences, thanks to a technique called “foveated rendering.” This renders sharp images for wherever the human eye is looking in a virtual scene and reduces the image in the periphery. There’s no pricing yet, but it’s supposed to launch in the second quarter of 2019.

"I think the monitor that has the blinking issue is the LG 34UM69G-B, same stand at least and I have had that monitor with a Vega 56 and RX 570 and had no issue with it. Currently I am on my third 34" ultrawide from LG and I have never had any issues at all that couldn't be traced back to something in the drivers."Last edited: Jan 8, 2019Robbo99999 likes this. -

Any word on what is going on with Msi's flagship model(gt83)? Out of all the videos on youtube, I couldn't find any sort of new rtx gt83 reveal or announcement. Only updates to the gt73/75 titan and below. Hoping for an improved gt83(new monitor with higher refreshrate/resolution-144hz @ 1440p), improved cooling(new heatpipe configuration so that the cpu and primary gpu don't share the same heatpipes), updated bezels etc.
If anyone hears anything about what plans MSI might have for the GT83, Please let me know!

CES: Hyundai launch walking car
The Sun
Published on Jan 8, 2019
South Korean automaker Hyundai took a stroll into the future on Monday (January 7) with a car that can walk and climb on wheeled legs.
Hyundai said at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas that the 'Elevate' concept vehicle was designed with first responders in mind, to allow them to navigate tricky terrain after an accident or natural disaster. The vehicle would drive to the scene of an earthquake or tsunami, for example, and then lift itself up on legs to walk across ground that would bring regular vehicles to a halt.
It could also be used in more conventional, urban situations, designer David Byron of Sundberg-Ferar consultancy told Reuters at a presentation unveiling the concept.
"Our idea here was: could you, you know, help someone get out of a snow ditch? Could you help someone elevate to a front door when they can't get out of their front door if it's someone with disabilities in a wheel chair and they don't have a ramp?"
Byron demonstrated on a prototype how the chassis of the vehicle would detach from the wheeled legs, allowing different vehicle bodies to be used for distinct purposes. A scale model robot showed the vehicle's two walking gaits -- mammalian and reptilian -- which would allow it to move in any direction.
But while Hyundai's concept is moving forward, it's unlikely to be appearing at a local dealership any time soon.
"For this to work, it's going need a lot of scanning and programing. So a lot of work is still in the pipeline. But this is pure invention and it takes a while," Byron said.

Hyundai Cradle Walking Car Concept – Robot Demo | CES 2019
The Wheel Network
Published on Jan 7, 2019
▪ Debuting at CES 2019, “Elevate”, the Ultimate Mobility Vehicle (UMV), prepares communities in the event of a natural disaster
▪ Wheels with robotic legs allow users to drive, walk or even climb over the most treacherous terrain
Any first responder will tell you that the first 72 hours following a natural disaster are the most crucial to saving lives. However, often times due to the nature of the disaster (forest fire, earthquake, hurricane, or flood), it can be difficult for search-and-rescue and humanitarian aid missions to reach and get immediate help to those in need.
The need for efficient, rapid, resilient transportation for disaster assistance is what led Hyundai to develop the first-ever vehicle with moveable legs. Elevate is the first Ultimate Mobility Vehicle (UMV), blending technology found in electric cars and robots, which allows it to traverse terrain beyond the limitations of even the most capable off-road vehicle.
“When a tsunami or earthquake hits, current rescue vehicles can only deliver first responders to the edge of the debris field. They have to go the rest of the way by foot. Elevate can drive to the scene and climb right over flood debris or crumbled concrete,” said John Suh, Hyundai vice president and head of Hyundai CRADLE. “This technology goes well beyond emergency situations - people living with disabilities worldwide that don’t have access to an ADA ramp could hail an autonomous Hyundai Elevate that could walk up to their front door, level itself, and allow their wheelchair to roll right in – the possibilities are limitless.”
The Elevate concept is based on a modular EV platform with the capability to switch out different bodies for specific situations. The robotic leg architecture has five degrees of freedom plus wheel hub propulsion motors and is enabled by the latest in electric actuator technology. This design is uniquely capable of both mammalian and reptilian walking gaits, allowing it to move in any direction. The legs also fold up into a stowed drive-mode, where power to the joints is cut, and the use of an integrated passive suspension system maximizes battery efficiency. This allows Elevate to drive at highway speeds just like any other vehicle. But no other can climb a five foot wall, step over a five foot gap, walk over diverse terrain, and achieve a 15 foot wide track width, all while keeping its body and passengers completely level. Further, the combination of wheeled motion with articulating legs provides a new paradigm of mobility by enabling faster walking speeds, unique dynamic driving postures and torsional control at the end of each leg.
“By combining the power of robotics with Hyundai’s latest EV technology, Elevate has the ability to take people where no car has been before, and redefine our perception of vehicular freedom,” said David Byron, design manager, Sundberg-Ferar. “Imagine a car stranded in a snow ditch just 10 feet off the highway being able to walk or climb over the treacherous terrain, back to the road potentially saving its injured passengers – this is the future of vehicular mobility.”
Inside the Elevate, passengers would experience a vehicle fully engineered to tackle the roughest terrain comfortably. Engineering enhancements include:
▪ Robotic legs with five degrees of freedom plus in-wheel propulsion
▪ Ability to walk in mammalian and reptilian style gaits for omnidirectional motion
▪ Capable of climbing a five foot vertical wall
▪ Step over a five foot gap
▪ Non-back drivable motors enable the legs to lock in any position
▪ Modular electric vehicle platform
“We have been working with Sundberg-Ferar on the Elevate Concept for almost three years now,” added Suh. “Elevate is part of our various ‘Last-Mile’ technologies and solutions and it also has ‘Last-100 Feet’ capability too.”Atma likes this. -

FLIR Thermal Camera on DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual
Roswell Flight Test Crew
Published on Jan 8, 2019
In this episode, the Roswell Flight Test Crew speaks with Randall Warnas of FLIR about the company's latest product partnership with DJI: the Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual. This aircraft incorporates a dual thermal and visible light camera, mounted on a three-axis gimbal. Based on FLIR's Lepton camera core, the Dual provides a 160x120 thermal image, along with a high-definition visible light image. The thermal image includes radiometric calibration, allowing it to provide accurate temperature measurements for any pixel in the frame, either during the flight or in subsequent analysis. It also incorporates FLIR's patented MSX technology, which detects the edges in the visible light image and superimposes them on the thermal image, making it easier to recognize people and objects. One potential use case for this platform is first-in first responders, such as firefighters and law enforcement officers, to gain immediate situational awareness during an emergency, as well as potential industrial uses, such as inspection.

▪ Technology combines VR content with vehicle movements in real time
▪ Debuts “Marvel’s Avengers: Rocket’s Rescue Run” futuristic prototype created with Disney Games and Interactive Experiences for CES showcase
▪ Start-up company, holoride, to establish new entertainment category via open platform
Audi is redefining in-car entertainment at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. In the future, backseat passengers will be able to experience movies, video games, and interactive content even more realistically using virtual reality glasses. The premium brand is presenting a technology that adopts virtual content to the movements of a vehicle in real time: If the car drives through a right turn, the spaceship in the experience does the same, for example. Through a subsidiary, Audi Electronics Venture GmbH, Audi has co-founded a start-up company, holoride GmbH, which will commercialize this new form of entertainment via an open platform that will be made available to all carmakers and content developers in the future.
Audi is demonstrating the immersive futuristic technology with “Marvel’s Avengers: Rocket’s Rescue Run,” an in-car VR experience for backseat passengers being brought to life by Disney Games and Interactive Experiences. Wearing VR glasses, the passenger in an Audi e-tron is transported into a fantastical depiction of outer space: The Audi e-tron now functions as the ship manned by the Guardians of the Galaxy, as the passenger makes their way through an asteroid field together with Rocket, a character that will appear in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame in spring 2019. Every movement of the car is reflected in the experience in real time. If the car turns a tight corner, the player curves around an opposing spaceship in virtual reality. If the Audi e-tron accelerates, the ship in the experience does the same.
In order to establish this new category of entertainment on the market as quickly and comprehensively as possible, Audi is taking a new approach: The premium brand has co-founded a start-up named holoride, in which it holds a minority interest through the subsidiary Audi Electronics Venture GmbH, which developed the technology. Furthermore, Audi will license the technology to holoride. The start-up will use an open platform to allow carmakers and content developers to create and offer additional extended reality formats. “Creative minds will use our platform to come up with fascinating worlds that turn the journey from A to B into a real adventure,” said Nils Wollny, head of Digital Business at Audi, and future CEO of holoride. “We can only develop this new entertainment segment by adopting a cooperative, open approach for vehicle, device and content producers.”
From arcade games, underwater adventures and space exploration to educational trips through historical cities or the human bloodstream, there are almost no limits to what is possible. holoride will provide a software development kit that serves as the interface to the vehicle data and transfers those into virtual realities, allowing developers to create worlds that can be experienced in-car with all of the senses. Since the visual experience and the user’s actual perception are synchronized, conventional movies, series or presentations can also be viewed with a significantly reduced chance of motion sickness.
holoride intends to launch the new form of entertainment on the market within the next three years using standard VR glasses for backseat passengers. In the long term, the continued expansion of car-to-X infrastructure could also see traffic events becoming a part of the experience: Stopping at traffic lights could introduce unexpected obstacles to a game or interrupt a learning program with a quick quiz.
Audi and Marvel Studios have been teaming up since the inception of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with the appearance of the Audi R8 in Iron Man (2008). Drawing upon this longstanding relationship, Audi and Disney Games and Interactive Experiences together created “Marvel’s Avengers: Rocket’s Rescue Run,” to demonstrate how a backseat passenger can enjoy their journey even more using the most innovative VR technology. “Audi, Marvel and Disney Games and Interactive Experiences are celebrating Marvel Studios’ 10th anniversary with an Avengers experience that combines world class content and innovative technology,” said Mike Goslin, Vice President, Disney Games and Interactive Experiences. “While this CES demo was developed purely in the spirit of exploration and experimentation, we are constantly evaluating emerging technologies to enhance our stories and experiences.”

The Smart Controller will retail in the United States for $649, however, its release has been delayed by the ongoing government shutdown – which has prevented the unit from getting approval from the Federal Communications Commission.

In this episode, the Roswell Flight Test Crew heads out into the Nevada desert with Walkera representative Lucy Chen for a live demonstration of the gasoline-powered QL 1200 hexacopter drone.
Fueled with a gas-oil mixture, the QL 1200 is capable of flying for up to two hours. The aircraft itself weighs 16 kilograms (35 pounds) and it is capable of supporting a 2 kilogram (4.4 pound) payload. The base aircraft design incorporates a 30x optical zoom camera. Its potential applications include emergency response and industrial inspection. The gasoline engine has an automatic starter, which can be initiated from the remote control. In addition to flying with direct pilot input, it also incorporates GPS waypoint-driven mission capabilities, for large-scale surveying operations. The gasoline engine has been imported from Japan and has fewer maintenance requirements than similar-sized engines.
