Checking out the new laptops at MSI's booth at CES 2019, showed that there were some thin but powerful stealth laptops in the making, with a 6 core 8750h and an rtx 2080, it all but screams power in such a small size. The RTX 2070 and 2080 are max-q designs though the 2060 implementation will be the desktop variant cooled by MSI's special 3 fan cooling solution. Expect the GS75 stealth to hit later this month. Then also on display was their p65 targetting more towards mobile content creators with a longer battery life and even smaller size!

ASRock at CES 2019 have some new motherboards on display, some, like the B450 which give a new aesthetic and great value, and others... like the B365 which feature a 22nm chipset instead of 14nm. This also has no Gen 2 USB 3.1 natively, however ASRock on the Phantom Gaming line has added in their own controller and beefed up the VRM to give better power delivery. The last series of aesthetic upgrades is the PGA or; Phantom Gaming Alliance where ASRock have teamed up with Cooler Master and also Team Group to deliver new designs on SSDs, cases (HP500 Mesh, K500) and DDR4 RGB Excalibur Memory.

Creative Super X-FI HoloGraphy is new tech that takes DSP (Digital Signal Processing) to a whole new level. To put it simply - It draws first in a game of Bangkok Rules. And it works with any pair of headphones and any sound source, even take mono and making something out of it. The next big thing was the AE-9 Sound card, to still be released in March this year, it will have XLR 48v phantom power support a Saber 9038 DAC and replaceable OP amps too. This is one for enthusiasts! They also had some new value orientated sound bars and speakers on the market too, and June will see the budget 2.1 pebble plus be released too!

HP Spectre x360 15 AMOLED - Hands On at CES 2019
    Digital Trends
    Published on Jan 10, 2019
OLED is finally coming to laptops. Well, some at least. There’s been a lot of talk about the advanced display tech at CES 2019, but only one laptop actually had it available to try out. The 15-inch HP Spectre x360.
The 2-in-1 is a great choice to be one of the first devices of 2019 to implement OLED. It’s already a fast, capable workhorse — and now it has a display to match.

While that should be plenty of power for the average person, it should be noted you’re going to get more power in the non-OLED version of the device, which features the six-core processor and a more capable GTX 1050 Ti. In terms of raw power, that’s the better option. The same goes for other 15-inch options like the Dell XPS 15 or MacBook Pro.

We had a couple of issues that held back last year’s model, which included AMD Vega graphics onboard. The biggest, though, was the battery life. The combination of those graphics and the 4K screen left it without enough juice. We’re concerned that an OLED screen might make that situation even worse, though we’ll have to test it ourselves to know for sure.

We don’t have a price on the OLED Spectre x360, but don’t be surprised if that extra display tech comes with an extra fee. Until we start seeing more widespread support of OLED, it will remain an expensive, niche option on laptops. That doesn’t mean it isn’t beautiful, though, and it’s hard not to excited by the preview of that future the Spectre x360 offers.

As we said, the price is currently unannounced, but HP says the system will arrive in March of 2019.

Audio-Technica Lineup - Hands On at CES 2019
    Digital Trends
    Published on Jan 10, 2019
Audio Technica has announced a slew of new audio products just in time for this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, giving fans of high-fidelity sound a lot to look forward to in the coming year.
First and foremost, the company is stepping even further into the world of noise-canceling headphones, offering three new models to listeners around the globe. The three headphones, called the ATH-ANC900BT, ATH-ANC500BT, and ATH-ANC100BT, represent two over-ear models (the first two) and one in-ear model (the latter), and are aimed to make your music sound as good as possible.

The flagship ATH-ANC900NC model takes direct aim at industry-leading headphones like the Sony WH-1000xM3, with eight microphones to monitor your environment . They offer excellent sound reduction, and a staggering 35 hours of battery life, thanks to its low-energy Bluetooth 5.0 chip. Like the Sony, the headphones will feature touch controls.

The ATH-ANC500BT will showcase a 20-hour battery life and Bluetooth 4.2 connection, and are designed for those who still want great sound but are on a slightly tighter budget. The in-ear ATH ANC-100BT are geared toward those who want a more discreet listening solution — and who may want to workout in relative silence.

The three headphone models will retail for $300, $99, and $99 dollars respectively, and will all be available in spring.

Those looking to get into the world of analog audio will likely be excited about the latest version of Audio Technica’s popular AT-LP120USB turntable, which has long been one of the best entry-level turntables on the market.

Called the ATLP120XUSB, the new model has an improved direct-drive motor and a reverse function that allows users to play records backwards for scratching. It also features an improved onboard phono preamp for listeners who don’t want to purchase a more expensive outboard one. As with the previous model, USB connectivity allows buyers to rip their favorite tunes to digital.

Those with even tighter budgets may also be interested in a new version of the company’s entry-level AT-LP60XHP turntable, which comes with a new sleek design and options for USB or Bluetooth playback (for slightly elevated prices).

The company has also announced two more high-fidelity oriented turntables called the AT-LPW40WN and AT-LPW30TK, which come in gorgeous wood finishes and are designed for those looking for a workhorse table with prettier aesthetics than are offered by the LP120 or LP60 models.

Pricing for the new turntable models ranges from $99 for the base LP-60 model to $300 for the AT-LPW40WN model. None of the new models have firm release dates yet, but we will update this article as we hear more.

This drawing tablet lets you use real art supplies

The iSKN Slate Repaper drawing tablet is geared toward artists and is a huge improvement from the original Slate in 2016. The original product was unique in that it let the user fit magnetic rings on their own pens and pencils, which would work with the magnets in the tablet to convert strokes on to a companion app in real time. You could place any paper on the tablet, clip it in place, and start drawing. Back then, I was disappointed by the tablet’s bugginess and sensitivity, but this fourth-generation product fixes a lot of those issues.

Daimler is ready to put its driver assistance tech on the road with a semi-autonomous big rig, four years after the first prototype. We got a test ride in the truck where we watched it drive itself and pull off a pretty wild emergency braking maneuver.

    |CES 2019| Toyota Bets on 'Guardian' Autonomy: Level 4 and 5 Autonomous Vehicles
Toyota is doubling-down on humans. That’s the answer to the question; What has the Toyota Research Institute (TRI) been doing in automated driving over the past 12 months? Using onboard cameras, sensors and 3D animation, TRI opened its portion of a press conference today at the annual CES show in Las Vegas with a vivid reenactment of a three-car crash on a California interstate, where no one was injured.

“We know what happened because we were there, in the thick of it,” said Dr. Gill Pratt, TRI CEO and Toyota Motor Corporation Fellow. “Our test vehicle was travelling at freeway speed in manual mode with its autonomy mode disabled as it gathered data at the many tunnels and bridges in the San Francisco bay area. As we downloaded data from the incident, we asked ourselves; Could this crash have been mitigated, or avoided altogether by a future Toyota Guardian automated safety system? We believe the answer is yes.”

From its beginning three years ago, TRI has been committed to a two-track development approach to automated driving. Its on-going Chauffeur development focuses on full autonomy, where the human is essentially removed from the driving equation, either completely in all environments, or within a restricted operational design domain (ODD). Toyota Guardian, on the other hand, is being developed to amplify human control of the vehicle, not replace it. With Toyota Guardian, the driver is meant to be in control of the car at all times, except in those cases where it anticipates or identifies a pending incident and employs a corrective response in coordination with driver input.

One of TRI’s most significant breakthroughs this year, was the creation of blended envelope control where Guardian combines and coordinates the skills and strengths of the human and the machine. The system was inspired and informed by the way that modern fighter jets are flown, where you have a pilot that flies the stick, but actually they don't fly the plane directly. Instead, their intent is translated by the low-level flight control system, thousands of times a second to stabilize the aircraft and stay within a specific safety envelope

This blended envelope control is much more difficult to create in a car than in a fighter jet. That is because the control envelope for a car is not only defined by vehicle dynamics, but also by the vehicle’s perception and prediction ability of all things in its immediate environment.

    2019 Nissan Leaf E+ – Redline: First Look – 2019 CES
    Redline Reviews
    Published on Jan 9, 2019
The #Nissan #Leaf was the first mass produced EV available in America back in 2011. When the second generation was introduced last year, we liked the updated styling and improved interior but the range of only 151 miles still left something to be desired. With the new #LeafEPlus, a larger 60 kWh battery now promises 226 miles of EV range, just shy of the 238 in the Bolt and 260 in the Model 3 Mid-Range. Power also increased by nearly 50% and Nissan says 0-60 times should improve to the 6 second range. Will this larger battery be enough to keep Nissan in the mix as the EV market continues to grow with new competitors?

Noctua's NH-D15 has long been a high-performing, massive air cooler, but it faces new competition from the Deepcool Assassin III. Deepcool's showing at CES 2019 deserved a bit more depth than some of our other coverage, so we spoke with the engineers in detail about the material choices for the company's new coolers. The Assassin III aims to compete versus the Noctua NH-D15, while the Captain 240 Pro aims to compete in the CLC market.

Oskron Smartwatch - Hands On at CES 2019
    Digital Trends
    Published on Jan 13, 2019
It’s always a special moment when wandering around the massive, sprawling halls of CES 2019, you come across something you hadn’t heard of, and didn’t expect to see.
That’s how we stumbled on the Oskron smartwatch. Produced by the same company responsible for the Lunar solar smartwatch, it has a party trick to end them all — a screen you can’t see until it lights up.

At first glance the Oskron looks like a regular sporty chronograph-style watch. It has a crown flanked by two buttons, comes with a masculine metal bracelet, and is large and weighty on the wrist. Push the crown and the magic happens — a previously invisible screen springs into life on the bottom half of the face. This small display shows scrolling notifications, step count for the day, a timer, and international time zones.

We love the attention to detail here. When the screen activates the watch hands quickly move out of the way, making it easy to read the display. Leave the buttons alone for a moment, and the screen disappears, returning the look to that of a regular mechanical watch. The top button activates a find-my-phone feature, while the bottom button activates the built-in compass. This is an unusual feature addition, but is part of the company’s DNA, as it makes the same magnetic compass mechanisms for other smartwatch firms.

The compass is driven by the same gearbox mechanism that shifts the hands to show the display. They rotate smoothly and quickly, always updating with your direction. Obviously this feature can be used for navigation purposes, but we’re not entirely sure how many people will find it helpful. We were told it works in conjunction with navigation apps on your phone, and the watch will vibrate and point in the direction you need to travel, which sounds helpful. We couldn’t test this at the time.

At its heart the Oskron smartwatch is a hybrid, but as they usually don’t have displays, this sits somewhere alongside the stunning Alpina AlpinerX. The screen is bright and clear, and although it’s small, provided the information is concise and glanceable you’ll be fine. We can’t imagine reading long messages though. The buttons have a soft, quality feel to them, and the body feels heavy and well made.

The case is big at 45mm and the face is covered in mineral glass, while the charging port on the back clips into place rather than using unreliable magnets. It syncs with both Android and iOS phones, and the battery is expected to last at least a week before needing a recharge, which is decent for smartwatches with a screen.

If you like the look of the Oskron smartwatch, how do you go about buying one? That’s the difficult part at the moment. Oskron sells it through the firm’s own website, which isn’t the best we’ve ever seen, plus it’s listed only in euros. It’s also for sale though Amazon Germany, and both places charge 450 euros, which converts over to about $520. There’s no doubt that’s expensive — less than the aforementioned Alpina AlpinerX, but equal to a feature-packed Apple Watch Series 4.

It’s always refreshing to see smartwatches like the Oskron that do something a little different, especially when they edge towards traditional watch styles, rather than overly technical pieces.

Leo Says 36: Shooting guns, BitWit Kyle, Gamersnexus Steve, Nvidia RTX, Intel, AMD Navi, Radeon VII

He also talks about Nvidia RTX, DLSS, AMD Navi, AMD Radeon VII, Intel Keynote, the W3175X and the possible $8000 price tag. Intel Project Athena, X570 chipset and PCIe 4.0.
    00:11 Introduction
00:33 Briony met BitWit Kyle and GamersNexus Steve
01:02 CES 2019 behind the scenes a little - shooting guns!
07:52 Nvidia RTX mobile, DLSS and more
11:17 Intel Keynote, no sign of W3175X rumoured to be $8000
16:08 AMD announced a lot of stuff at CES 2019 but didn’t showcase much
19:15 Intel Project Athena, X570 chipset and PCIe 4.0 also coming
20:22 AMD Navi has yet to break cover. AMD Radeon VII is due on 7th February with a price of US$699.
23:06 Leo and Briony shooting guns in Vegas

    Leo's notes for this episode:

Briony met Bit Wit Kyle and Steve from Gamers Nexus. CES is a huge show, spread across LVCC and a bunch of hotels.

Nvidia announcements included Nvidia RTX 2060 for desktops with 6GB of GDDR6 memory. Nvidia RTX 2080, 2070 and 2060 for laptops, each with the same number of CUDA cores as the desktop chip. Expect Max-Q rather than Max-P. My big question is whether this makes mobile 4K gaming a practical proposition or are we going to focus on 1440p with higher frame rates. DLSS has been confusing.

Intel spoke about plenty of interesting products but showed very little. Still no sign of the 28-core Xeon W-3175X that is now rumoured to be USD$8,000.

AMD Ryzen 3rd Gen demonstrated beating Core i9-9900K. The CPU was shown with a 14nm IOX and a single 7nm chiplet along with a blatant space on the package where a second chiplet could be installed. This 8 core/16 thread part seems to be a Ryzen 5, with scope for 12-core Ryzen 7 and 16-core Ryzen 9 CPUs before Computex. AMD EPYC Rome due mid-2019 with 64-cores/128-threads.

Intel Project Athena follows Ultrabook. no info given. Lakefield uses big.LITTLE CPUs (to borrow ARM’s name) with Foveros to combine Core with Atom

X570 chipset and PCIe 4.0 also coming

AMD Navi has yet to break cover. AMD Radeon VII is due on 7th February with a price of US$699. This is a 7nm Vega with HBM memory that is batting against the GTX 1080Ti/RTX 2080. Anything that puts pressure on Nvidia’s prices is welcome.

GamersNexus learned of X570 and B550 launch plans while at CES last week, working with AMD's industry partners to discuss timelines for the year. It sounds like the Ryzen 3000 series will likely see actual availability in June (although an announcement may be sooner), with X570 chipset completion determining some of the launch scheduling.
