The Crucial/Micron site now has the 2.5" SATA III 960GB M500 SSD as "In Production" as well as the 240GB M500 mSATA model.

Previously they were listed as "Sampling".

I'm glad to see the 960GB 2.5" M500 in "Production" too. The 480GB mSATA M500 is still in "Sampling."

Has Micron said anything or is planning to release an SSD utility/toolbox-like program for the M500?

Edit: Or is having an SSD utility/toolbox-like program irrelevant now that Windows 8 can manually/automatically run Trim? I just like the idea of having such program like Samsung and Intel do.

The relatively low price points didn't surprise me after the regular Samsung 840 outperformed many premium drives while being a lot cheaper.

Now the 500GB Samsung 840 is on sale for $350 (no TAX, except if your in Florida and I think 1 more state)
    Samsung 840 Series MZ-7TD500BW 500GB Solid State Drive - 2.5 Form Factor, SATA III, 540 MB/s Read Speed, 330 MB/s Write Speed at TigerDirect.com

Edit: WOW, even cheaper, same drive for $335 (not sure about tax on this one, but at least there is free shipping) http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=SAMMZ7TD500KW&ref=froogle&omid=103&CAWELAID=1797977915
Not only that but this one is actually the notebook/desktop kit which includes free mounting hardware, USB-SATA cable, as well as data migration software.

I actually got the 840 500gb drive shipped to Australia from bhphotovideo for $310 and. It now acts as a steam games drive to complement my plextor m5s 256gb in my desktop. The load speeds are incredible.

Nothing other than the pricing itself, the thread being about SSD pricing to begin with. It also explains why the prices are so low.

To me, skyrocketing demand is good. :)

A lot of people have their eyes on this. The price will eventually come down to Crucial's aggressive low target.

So, it's been 48 HRS - no one has ordered one yet? :)

What does the site say? Are they available, 'pre-order' or what?

    Also what is the price?

Clicking on the English button reveals that they will be available on April 13th and pre order now.

I believe Amazon Japan only ships within Japan to members.

Price: ¥ 103,270 & eligible for Free Shipping. Details

This item will be released on April 13, 2013. Click here for details of availability.
    Pre-order now.
Ships from and sold by Amazon.co.jp. Gift-wrap available.

There's roughly 97Yen per US Dollar.

Japan has a consumption tax included in prices.
The rate is currently 5% (4% national, 1% prefectural), but is scheduled to be increased to 8% in April 2014 and to 10% in October 2015. Shops and other service providers are required to include the consumption tax in the prices shown.

The Yen is almost at "parity" with the dollar (¥100/$1) as of today. So that's an asking price of about $1,040. Even taking the VAT out of it, I'm guessing US prices will be less but it will probably take a while to decrease to the target amount due to limited supply and the early adopter tax.

Great news. The 960GB is now listed on Amazon UK site. $600 . :)
That is UK price. It will be cheaper in the US.

    Crucial CT960M500SSD1 2.5-inch 960GB M500 SATA 6Gb/s Internal Solid State Drive: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Amazon UK:
    Samsung 840 Pro 256GB: $262

    Amazon US:
    Samsung 840 Pro 256GB: $229

229/262 = 0.874. Meaning US price is 87% of the UK price for SSDs.

    Crucial M500 Amazon US price:

    $600 * 0.874 = $524

Prices on the high capacities seem alright but the 240gb seem kinda high, even for msrp, the Samsung 840 250gb retails between 150/170. I was hopping to see the m500 240gb msrp at $175 and retail at 150 or less

    Pretty interesting, thanks.

I just checked crucial dot com and they're offering both 480GB and 960GB in 2.5" size w/ pricing as stated above for those two sizes. I didn't try ordering, as my interest is 480GB mSATA.

I checked USA Amazon and see that one European seller is on there w/ 120GB mSATA.

So we're finally off to the races. :)

The open question is how long for the other sizes in 2.5" and mSATA to show up.

Ha nice! Good time indeed. I'm aiming for both the 960GB 2.5" and the 480GB mSATA. I wonder if any retailer (or Crucial themselves) would cut me a break on the price if I purchased both at the same time?

This is what the grand total would be for me if I ordered the 960GB 2.5" right now:

This is the page that sold the drive to me:

    See:
    AnandTech | The Crucial/Micron M500 Review (960GB, 480GB, 240GB, 120GB)

I have been using a Samsung 256GB 840 PRO for the last few months and really place it very close to the M4 - just like the above charts show. And contrary to all the other 'benchmarks' - even the ones following in the same Anandtech review in the link above. How close is/was it? Well, let's just say that I was not driven to buy another Samsung (even the 512GB 840 PRO for ~$417 with price matching...).

Now I'm glad I held off - the 960GB M500 is sold as soon as it is available locally.

The article really shows that the new capacity points are 480GB and 960GB - the 240GB 'solutions' and below are really just new ways to spend your money (without getting performance in return).

Of course, unless I get to use one for myself I can't 'recommend' them - but something tells me that all MY systems will soon be running at least a 480GB M500 soon.

Good review with a good summary page. It'll bear re-reading.

Especially interesting that all 4 sizes were reviewed in the same review; that's not often done.

Agreed that the M500's 2.5" 480GB and 960GB have adequate performance. It's already a deal (price-wise) for the 960GB unit.

There'll be plenty of argument about performance vs the competition vs pricing for 480GB and below. There's enough competition for 480GB and below, that we'll have to wait and see where the prices settle out.

I'm looking forward to anand's writeup on the mSATA units.

im quite tempted to get the 960gb, my main problem is that given that i will probably stick with apple, the format is not appealing, given that I plan to change my notebook next year, I dont feel confortable in geting a 2.5 drive, unless apple decides to use the space in the rmbp 13 to fit a 2.5, I wont buy it probably till when I have that confirmation

so basically its last gen performance at a ridiculously low price? This model also highlights the advantage vendors with access to their own fabs enjoy. Plextor were really pushing for $0.6-$0.7 per gig for their M5s drives last year but I doubt any high density dies were available, now they are at the mercy of Micron for the chips but Micron might be exclusively keeping the high density babies for themselves for the time being.
Interesting comment by Anand though, Cost, Performance or Endurance you can only pick 2. I won't deny that the Samsung 840 is ridiculously good at read operations at the price of low endurance.
What kind of tradeoffs are you guys willing to make?

Anyone seen a review of the 960GB M500 where's it's the boot drive with data installed.

I'd like to know how it does 25% filled and over 50% filled.

Benchmarking an empty SSD from a different drive that's in Safe Mode IMO makes the drive look better than it may actually be to benefite to the maker and is of little use to someone wanting to know how the SSD might do in their PC.

After all, does anyone buy an SSD to leave empty?

I'd like to see reviews with screenshots of the benchmarks of the drive being reviewed especially Anvil Storage Utilities that reveals more than what's in the graphs and other apps.

Using specially made benchmarking programs that few if anybody has access to for owner comparison is also useless.

Can't beat the 960GB and mSATA/NGFF 480GB models for their sheer capacity and price tag. However performance is sometimes lower than some of the other competitor SSDs so that's definitely a tradeoff. For mainly storage purpose, I'm sure it'll be great still (for me). This reviews starts to paint the bigger picture and the choice is tempting to say the least.

Otherwise, Samsung makes one helluva SSD as always, MLC or TLC. I've had good luck so far with mine and wouldn't expect any less from the 840s. Samsung should just produce a 1TB 840 /Pro and expand into the consumer mSATA/NGFF market too, this would probably destroy Micron/Crucial's little advantage they right now. I'd buy if they can continue to improve performance consistency (near empty state) even after filling up the drive to say 75%. It might be a while.

As for me. I'll wait for more reviews, personal and "professional", and for a sale, maybe then i'll bite as there's not much other choice in this capacity/cost target. Go M500!

Looking at the Anvil Storage Utilities screenshot in the TweakTown review it's easy to see the OS,CPU,motherboard, memory, drive letter, storage driver, alignment and type of data.

    Surprisingly,the Windows 7 OS(7600) is without SP1(7601).

The SSD again is being tested without being the boot drive and is100% empty.

iRST 11.5.4.1001 is the storage driver.

From the Samsung forum, CrystalDiskMark results for the mSATA Samsung PM841: 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. Performance improves with capacity.

I'll be getting the 480GB M500 mSATA as soon as I can find one to order. My 256GB m4 mSATA is bursting at the seams. I hope the power consumption is in line with Crucial's claims.

If the 840 120GB is any indication, write performance hasn't wavered with running and accelerated "real use" test I'm doing, read performance has suffered however which I find odd.

Not that I need the extra space just yet, but similar situation and thinking here.

Are you going to clone the working 256GB mSATA to the new 480GB mSATA?

And is that 256GB mSATA also your boot drive?

So if yes and if it's also your boot drive, kindly provide some details of steps that you'll take to accomplish that. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the links. The PM841 is the OEM version of what could be a "retail mSATA 840" correct?

I also want the mSATA 480GB, in the Anandtech article he mentions a release date of Q2. I think they're still in Sampling, not yet Production at Micron's website.

I plan to clone like I did when I went from the stock 128GB SSD to the 256GB. It's the one and only drive in my Samsung NP900X4C - no room for more.

I'm running Windows 7 and no UEFI so Acronis TrueImage will do the job without difficulty and allow me to manually choose the partition sizes on the destination SSD.

For hardware I put the new SSD in an mSATA to 2.5" SATA adapter in a 2.5" USB 3.0 enclosure. Included in the Acronis TrueImage package is a utility to create a bootable flash drive which is what I use for the cloning and making backup images.

Perhaps the M500 mSATA units are in production and at the moment is a supply chain startup issue???

USA amazon is showing "CRUCIAL M500 120GB MSATA SSD" from one 3rd party vendor in Germany with a note of: "Usually ships within 1 - 3 weeks. Ships from Germany."

See: Amazon.com: CRUCIAL M500 120GB MSATA SSD: Electronics

    Ah! Thanks for the link!!!

FWIW I'm going to use just Acronis True Image, but with a three step process (two clones) on my 12.5" X220 laptop:

    1) Clone mSATA boot drive to temp HDD (I think I have an unused 320GB 2.5" HDD but a 500GB would also be OK) in the HDD bay (I normally leave the HDD bay empty) via something like clone > manual > as is

My 256GB mSATA has boot NTFS partition of 191GB and unallocated of 47GB (I know, I know, that only totals 238GB!)

    2) Remove 256GB M4 mSATA and put in new/blank 480GB M500 mSATA

    3) Clone temp HDD to new mSATA. I'll try Acronis for increasing the NTFS partition from 191GB to something like 75% of 480GB (and yes I know that the drive actually has unallocated space already!)

If this 3rd step comes up with problems, I'll redo it with an "as is" clone and then boot gparted (USB stick) and have it resize the 191GB NTFS to the new larger size.

Look what the UPS driver brought a few minutes ago. I didn't realize these were 7 mm drives, but Crucial is including a 9.5 mm bracket. Won't have time to install until this afternoon at the earliest, though.

I think SF Durawrite is a true smarty! I was going through one of the LSI whitepapers while researching for the best SSD available & found this article very tech friendly. Just go through this if you have time - http://www.lsi.com/downloads/Public/Flash Storage Processors/LSI_PRS_FMS2011_T1A_Smith.pdf
It is said that DuraWrite and TRIM both provide more free space for the SSD during GC which is really great way to achieve higher throughput. I am awaiting the delivery of my Intel 525 SSD which should be here in a couple of days time :D

I've heard the opposite with badly implemented Durawrite. It should save your NAND in theory but some manufacturers use it as an excuse to implement bottom shelf async NAND cells yet also to enable a decent Warranty period. Apparently, reports range from permanent (i.e. throttling persisting beyond Secure Erase) to intermittent slowdowns after heavy write operations. Thus far, I don't think Intel implements Durawrite due to the high quality of their NAND but I don't trust any manufacturer that needs to implement Durawrite as you don't really know for what reason they are doing so.
