It seems odd, are you on the latest firmware? You can start a post in crucial forum, you may get better answers there.

But if I were you, I would just avoid the hassle and return it and demand a replacement.

    Sorry... dumb question.
Is the Micron C400 identical to the Crucial M4 and does it suffer from the same need for an a firmware update?
    Thanks!

Crucial M4 and Micron c400 are the same drive, just different names, it's branded as crucial m4 in most places.

Yes, you will need the new update.

    Hey guys,

may be it will be a dumb question but...
I have a mtfddak128mam-1j1 and firmware is stated as 0809. Logically this would mean that it is newer than 0309 or this is just for M4 which had fw 0001, 0002, 0009. I am a bit confused. Would anyone please help me out?

    Thank you ;)

As i can compare with others, my readings aren't bad. I will post them if anyone is looking to buy/compare it or smth...
    This is with IRST 10.8.0.1003

Holy Cow.... anyone try to reach someone at Micron lately?
I just spent 15 minutes going through phone progressions after phone progressions only to end up with what I had at 1 minute... which was leave a message.... argh.

Didn't used to be that way at Micron.... :(

So... I am waiting for a call back on the Micron C400 warranty questions I left them.

Lets see how long it takes them to get back to me.

FW0309 only applies to the M4/C400, it is clearly listed on Crucial's website too if you want a more official source.

    @tijo thank you for reply.

Isn't it strange, on official Micron web site 0309 is marked as last and importnat fw and my ssd model is stated as Product Name:RealSSD C400. This is what's begging me. So one more thing: Micron =/= Crucial and my RealSSD C400 =/= M4/C400(as named on this site)?

    Here's a quick question...

Posted are some benches of my C300 on a SATA II controller:

    [IMG] [IMG]

I've seen ppl posting their benches (which I'm assuming is on SATA III - as they are getting above 250MB/s in read speeds.) What I'm confused about is Write operations. My C300 (SATA II) writes seems faster than the M4 writes (SATA III).

What gives? Am I looking at this wrong?

I just wanted to get clarification on the Turn off Hard disks setting. I have a 128GB M4 in addition to another HDD that I use for data. Is it beneficial for the SSD to leave it on constantly or irrelevant since I have the OS on it. The reason I'm asking is because I really do like when the HDD is off and not spinning but have kept it on since I have read on here about allowing TRIM to do its thing when idling. Is there a way to only set the HDD to turn off after idling x-mins?

You can check your firmware revision in crystal Disk Mark or other monitoring utilities, you can also create the boot disc for the firmware update, it will check the FW version and then ask you if you want to do the update or not.

so sounds like you need to burn to disk eh? Annoying cause i havent burned a disc in years and havent bought one in years. Everyone uses flash drives now, wonder when these companies will catch on and let us use our drives to run as a bootable.

30 seconds of Google searching will give you the necessary instructions for creating a bootable flash drive from an .iso file.

Are there any vendors that sell it with the latest firmware? And will I have to buy a mounting case for the Alienware m11x?

It's highly unlikely any vendors sell M4s with 0309 firmware, according to a couple of guys who bought M4 recently, they all have 009 firmware incorporated.

0309 was released not long ago, you got to wait for a while for the manufactures to include it if you can't update the firmware for some reason.

And I don't think you will need any mounting case for your M11x, any 2.5'' SSD on the market will work for it.

Thanks. I notice you just got a 64 GB for your M17x. I assume you just use it for your OS and a few programs, and the old HDD for data. How is that working for you? I'd like to maybe do that and just spend the extra $75 on some more RAM or something else.

Yeah, I only installed OS and a few of my most frequently used programs, still got 30GB free space on it. Been using the m4 for over a half year now, everything works great, beats my 320gb 7200RPM hitachi drive by a landslide.

If your budget it tight, just get the 64Gb version, it's enough for your OS and some of your programs.

I don't quite remember off the top of my head, but i thought the 128GB was 22% faster than the 64GB, but only 11% slower than the 256GB.

Here's what i got with my new 128GB M4 in my Alienware M11x R3, specs in my sig:

This was the case with the 256 GB model I purchased this week. Interestingly, it had a note inside indicating there was a new firmware available for it, so it had to have been manufactured (or at least packaged) on or about the day 0309 was released.

Since the M11x doesn't have an optical drive, you'll need either an external one, or simply create a bootable USB drive from the firmware .iso file. There are free utilities to do this.

Nice thing about the M4 is that it does firmware updates via bootable media, rather than in Windows like most Sandforce drives. There's an awful lot of things that can potentially go wrong by doing it that way. The DOS/Linux boot CD method minimizes that risk, and the update itself only takes a minute at most.

Just upgraded to a 128GB M4 from a 64GB one, did a quick comparison, might be useful for those who debate whether to get 64gb or 128gb, as you can see 128gb excels 64gb in every aspect, especially in write speed. (64gb on the left, 128gb on the right).

Thought I should post that Crucial UK now ships M4s with the newest firmware (0309). I called them before I ordered and they said they don't have any M4s left with older firmware, and when I received it today the sticker on the drive does indeed say firmware 0309. :) One less thing to do!

I ordered my M4 on the week of Feb 20th, and when I got it a few days later, the sticker said Firmware 0309 already installed. And indeed, that seems to be the case!

Install Windows with the HDD controller in AHCI mode. After Windows is installed, disable defrag on the SSD (so it never runs on the SSD - fine to leave it on for a secondary spinner though), double-check that TRIM is on. That is all you HAVE to do, you can do other things like moving the users folders to a secondary drive (if you run dual drives in the laptop that is), turn off hibernate if you don't use it to gain a few GB's back (as many as you have RAM), etc.

These are all optional mind you, the big ones are turn off defrag, run in AHCI, and ensure TRIM is enabled. Otherwise, use the drive as normal.

Also an option would be to leave the bios setting as raid (if the laptop is capable of two internal drives) - if a second SSD gets added later on down the road, you wont then have the headache of having to reinstall the whole lot all over again, simply use Intel RST and create a raid without the need to re-install. (which you would have to do if the bios setting is left at AHCI as the OS woulndt boot when the sata mode gets changed from AHCI to RAID)

Just a note incase there is a possibility of getting another SSD in the future and avoiding unwanted hassle....

Goes without saying, if you only have one drive bay, install under AHCI.......

Quite true. If you put the controller in RAID mode, then any drives not part of a RAID array will default to AHCI, so it is indeed effectively the same thing. I run this on my desktop as I have a RAID array of spinners alongside a stand-alone SSD. Works great.

Got my m4 installed, installed windows, ran all my drivers and everything seems to be working... but with one catch.

Every time I try to run windows updates my company wide wireless system crashes :)

IT has been out 5 times now, every time I try download updates, the network crashes... and its not just the building that I am in, but rather the whole system (30 buildings, all run out of our server upstairs)

We are still not sure why its crashing the network, but I patched into the hard lines, and all seems well. Kinda odd that every time I would try to download a update the system would crash. I doubt its from the m4, but I think its kinda funny.

I will talk to IT monday to see if they found out what was causing the crashes.

I've recently aquired a 256GB Micron C400 SSD. It came with firmware version 0909 (???). I've googled that version, but have been unable to find anything about it. The problem is that the firmware update utilities only allow updating form certain versions, and 0909 isn't one of them. Anyone here know anything about FW 0909? Is there a way to bypass the current FW check maybe?

If it is a C400 instead of a M4 or a mSATA C400, you will not be able to use the 2.5" M4 firmware most likely.

You're most likely right. I haven't tried flashing a M4 firmware, I used a firmware I got from the micron website. The firmwares versions of the M4 and C400 seem to simular. I tried the micron version ofcourse (see here http://www.micron.com/parts/solid-state-storage/ssd/mtfddac256mam-1k1?pc={49381B5D-F6BC-4682-A3FD-F1ACDD5FFB1B}, at the "models and sims" tab). No reference to a 0909 version anywhere, and no utilities to flash a firmware from scratch. I sent an email to micron support about this.
