I'm aware, that's not what I drew attention to however. I never claimed w7170m was the same, anywhere. You picked at multiple things but used caps on the later half lol.

Willing to grant you the initial point but not the second.

    Really? Wow.......
Google says 7 beeps is CPU fault, but I don't really know if thats true. If it is, just buy a cheap i3 or i5 for like $15 of ebay

Nah, from what I recall it means that the motherboard cant communicate with the CPU. Almost every thread I have read with people of similar issues always resolves it with a motherboard swap. I have a 4700mq sitting here and wont boot with it either. Of course that was pulled from a dead system so who knows.

For now it goes in the closet. A project for another day.

Yeah, when it rains it pours. It just needs a motherboard to be running again. Ill probably just sit on it until the time is right. I have plenty of literature to keep me entertained. Heck might even get another m5100 for the m4600 since it has proven its worth time and again lol.

On the upside, you could put the 8950m in the M4600, as it will probably work

Yeah, I had tried that before but in order to do so, I have to desolder the DIMM slots. I did a sloppy job doing that the last time and killed the motherboard because the traces werent there. Luckily the m4600 mobo's are dirt cheap, like 15-20 bucks the last time I got it. The m6100 works in the m6600 so its likely that it would work.

When I finish up my course ill try it again, it will be a fun project and I have plenty of copper heatsinks for the VRMs.

Yep! Its also got a shoddy sBIOS so it cant accept the 965m. At present, the m5100 is the strongest GPU it can accept. I had the m6100 before, sold it after the failed project. Now I have it again and now the Ranger is dead lol. Ill give it another go when the time is right. IF the m4600 can accept the m6100 then its also possible it can accept the m290x or w7170m. Nothing to support this theory but maybe it doesnt like GPU's beyond 2GB of VRAM. If that is the case then maybe the 7970m could be the best GPU.

Well who knows, m4600 is ironically what I am stuck with again, time to rekindle some interest in it. Im already enjoying the keyboard again lol

Welp, who doesn't just love OEM incompatibility! Maybe you could try to fit a smaller kepler or maxwell quadro, or buy a 1050 ti MXM A, but honestly why spend that much when you could jusr buy a new Ranger or M6800 tbh

m5100 / W5170m is the strongest known card to work in the m4600 at present. Its been exhaustively researched with sBIOS flashes and vBIOS flashes. The 965m works, sort of, but only under Windows XP. M6100 is likely the best route to go, I believe one person did order the RX 560 but we never heard back from that member.

If I did sell off the Ranger, which is on the table but not really a good choice, I would just get an m4700, works with the 965m. More importantly would be easier to transport since the m4700 has the same dimensions as the m4600 lol.

Motherboards are about 150 USD, the rest of the hardware is good. I might've just sold it if I was younger in anger but I can be quite patient these days.

If properly removing the DIMM slots allow for better GPU's quite a few would appreciate it. 16GB RAM is enough for an older machine like this. Have to flash XMP to the ram anyways to get 1600Mhz, most people just use it with 1333Mhz.

Well, sorry to say this, but as of right now, I no longer possess a ranger. I did order a P377SM-A though. Yeah, I would go for the M4700 and sell your Ranger

Ill probably keep the Ranger, only needs a motherboard and I would take a huge loss in selling as For parts / Repair.

Smart. You could try parting it out, but you seem contempt with keeping it, and I wish I still had mine. Now I have to do everything off a phone until I get a PCIE splitter for my desktop

Would rather just keep it in the closet and revisit it than deal with lowballers of every part of sale. A couple of future projects. Ill try modding the DIMM slots again on the m4600 to accept 3.0b cards, can always repurpose a m6600 GPU heatsink if it works out. Then theres the RX 480 for the Ranger as well later on, probably wont touch that one until I am back on my feet comfortably, could be 6 months or a year but its worth keeping.

I thinkt best easily available card for the M4600 might be the Quadro rebrand of 965m, the m2200

Negative, just like the m6600, no Nvidia GPU besides what it shipped with work in the m4600.

m5100 / w5170m are currently the best cards. m6100 is just a hopefully since it works in the m6600 officially.

Meh, I got things to do to keep me busy in the mean time.

This m4600 is my plex machine more than gaming terminal. Plus buying a barebones m6600 I could easily port over everything from this laptop to that one and put the m6100 I have it and have a fully operational system. its a crappy situation for sure, but there are always options on the table if you can chillax a bit and see them.

barebones m6600 is like a hundred bucks or so usually lol, cheaper than a mobo for my Ranger

Well sorta, 15mm hdd doesn't fit cleanly. Wouldn't want it for a daily driver unless I needed it. It's an option but not something I'd want to invest into unless a barebones came along and was dirt cheap.

    Time will tell

This thread is about it in the AW 17 R1 (M17X R5) I did try it in my friends M17X R2, but it would boot into Bios/Windows and shutdown almost instantly, but shortly after that I realized the charger was broken and it wasn't charging and it died. The heatsink was basically plug and play IIRC, and the while it was restarting after about 30 seconds, the BIOS looked fine, no incorrect colors. You can try it if you want, it's only a $40 investment or so

At the moment, I don't have either machine in my possession
