Actually i can fit it but i have to use force which is not normal.. And the card will then be stuck, having to use tweezers to get it out. It's 5mm here too..

This doesn't happen with other expresscards you have tried in the slot? How is an expresscard normally supposed to be removed from your computer? Is the slot spring-loaded, is there a button or lever, etc.?

Spring loaded. I only have one 34. Tested in 54 ports machines, it fits..

Well you said it fits anyway if you push it in there. If the only problem is that it is hard to remove, and you don't have any other cards you want to use there, it shouldn't be much of a problem.

Ok i got the 3x USB 3.0 now, it fits well and installs well then.. CODE 10 CAN'T START!!! I can't believe it.. Fresco FL1100.. Everyone got it to work but me..?!

That's with drivers 3.5.18.0 (seller gave). I could find (not easily..) version 3.5.97.0 and guess what.. It works, finally i got one working!

Well the card still comes out when i pull a cable... Having not much experience with these, excuse my question but : is it the card or could the spring system got an issue?

About that one.. It's not just hard to remove, it's EXTREMELY HARD to put IN AND OFF. So hard that it could well damage the inside. Yet it fits on other 54' ports.. Crazy.

Ok i've got myself a 54 expresscard usb 3.0 card, and my issue with it is that i have to keep pressure on it unless it jumps out of the slot just enough to lose the connection with the slot connectors.
Any1 else had this issue, and what should i do about it?

I've tried it on two M17x R2 and both have the same result (spring system), but on older toshiba laptop that has push pin it works flawlessly.

Should i be looking towards a new card, and wich one is certainly going to fit my R2?

I'm also a bit dissapointed with the speeds of the current one, (100MB/s read & 90MB/s write) on SanDisk Extreme 32GB, that on sandy bridge laptop has (235MB/s read & 95MB/s write), is this limitation on all cards due to expresscard bandwith or is it jus a cheap card?

Put something between adapter & case, so that it sits there and doesn't jump out. A match or two, for example.

    Ok, thank's will do that.
So it's not the problem with the card but with the locking system... i see.
What about the speeds, is 100MB/s limit on expresscard slot?
Since it's advertised as 5Gbps that in theory should mean over 600MB/s troughput :/

Two things: slot and card limitations. I believe the slot has an absolute limit of 200 or so.

It could also be a limitation of the Renesas card. Never was able to exceed 100 on any of my laptops.

Actually one of my latops has a Renesas chip for the USB 3.0 and is slower than the card.

Oh ok, well as long as i have 90MB/s write the half read speed shouldn't bother me much :)
I've used the toothpicks to stop the card from falling out, and it's working great, but i'm wondering if anyone has found a more esthetic way to keep the card in slot.
I wouldn't use glue in case i have to replace motherboard/dvd unit/audio board but i'd really like to have it done a little bit cleaner :p... i'll look if i can get it done.

    Thanks for your help.

Sure, depends on the hardware. The Renesas USB 3.0 chip on my 8740w actually gives me SLOWER speeds than that provided by the AKE add-on card in the PC Card slot in my 8730w!

And that was when it was running Windows 7 64 bit testing my Iomega Ego 1TB. I saw no change under Windows XP SP3 32 bit. Tests using Crystal Diskmark.

Would you say your better results are OS dependent, or driver dependent?

Kingston HyperX dependent. It was well over 200, and the fastest of the three USB 3.0 thumb drives I have and tested.

Hmmm... I guess that means our poorer results are probably caused by a bottleneck somewhere between the drive and motherboard.

What's your hardware and software configuration to get these results?

    Hi everyone
I'm looking for an ExpressCard that can suite my nootebook but searching in the whole thread just confused me more.

I have a dell 1555 with a 34mm expresscard slot and i'd like to purchase an USB 3.0 adapter.

    My doubts are:
    1) which adapters are recommended? the one with 2 port or the one with one port and one power connector?
    2) are there any model that do not have problems with drivers and such? i'd like to buy it once and forget about it. Any adapter model you'd recommend?

    Thank you in advance! :)

There are not precision devices. They are inexpensive stamped product that try to fill a gap for the precious few users that still use them. They're remnants of a never quite highly utilized slot. The likelihood of you getting one that works is about 50/50. If you get any better than that, consider yourself lucky.

After some web searching i found a card that seems a little better (at least from the opinions i read about it) than other cheap products.
It's this Targus product: Targus Europa | ACA34EU – Targus USB 3.0 Express Card Adapter

It has one usb (enough for me) and one DC Power jack.

Can anybody tell me what's the point of having a DC Power jack? i'm not an expert, but the usb should already provide the power for a 2.5" Hard Drive...
    Am i Wrong?

Does anybody know this card and can share an opinion? :)

Depends on the hard drive model. The more portable ones receive power over USB; others require power separately.

I second the previous opinion. I have an Iomega eGo and without external power is flaky at best. it comes with a second USB plug to get extra power.

The power jack is meant to be connected to another USB port as a source of extra power, for those hard drives that take more than what the card can natively supply and come with only a single connector.

As for the AKE being being 'cheap'... I have two of the 54mm model and they both work flawlessly. The only problem is the USB connector, it tends to come off. I punched some dents on the outside casing to retain the connector better, and it works well (see picture).

    Thank you for sharing!!
At first i was looking for an AKE card too, but than i found the opinion of a guy that bouth it and coulnd't get it to work on the laptop model i have too.
So i searched for different models.

Forgive me but i didn't understand if your final opinion on the product i linked is positive or not, do you think that a Usb + DC power jack can be better than 2 Usb port??

To take advantage of the DC power jack i think i need a cable like this, right?
    usb_pwr.jpg
    But my question is...
Which is the difference with a cable like this? (in case i buy a 2 usb card of course.)

I know this, but i think that a separate power source can also be provided from a second USB port, using a Y-Cable, right?
what i do not understand is if there's an advantage in having a DC power jack over a second USB port in the card.

i did some more research about those cards and i ended up with this:
The expresscard connection is not able to provide the 5V that's usually given by a usb port.
That's why, with expresscard adapters, the connection is not always stable when they have to power up a 2.5" hard drive.

That's also the reason why in some expresscard adapter you can find a DC Power jack. It can be connected to another usb (also 2.0) port of your laptop to reach the needed voltage.

    Now... my last question is:

Can the same result be achieved also with an expresscard adapter that has 2 USB port but no DC power adapter?

If i connect one of the 2 USB3.0 of the card to an usb2.0 of my laptop... will the other usb3.0 port have the "plus" voltage?

If yes...it doesn't make sense to buy a card with a DC Power adapter i think...

Ok, to everyone with spring-load expresscard, if you are having issues with the card not sitting in the slot, here is what i did to permanently fix it wihout the toothpicks or anything.
When i opened the laptop for cleaning and repaste i removed the spring from the slot, so now the card stays in the slot wihout any issues :)

Did anyone disassemble any of these with external power connector? Do they have a voltage regulator or some protection circuity or whatsoever?

The idea is to take a 3-port card and solder +5V from one of the usb 2.0 ports directly to it.

my 2c you can use an USB 3.0 expresscard without external power if you protect it using an USB 3.0 Hub with externalpower supply. I use an Uspeed 7 port and an Anker 9+1 Hub on my zBook.
Get an USB 3.0 expresscard that has a NEC now Renesas controller which were imho the only reliable controller arround before USB 3.0 came more accepted. I own the Logilink2port PC0055.

Has anyone seen Carbus USB 3.0 controller lately?

snn47, cables for additional power is something I would like
to avoid. So far I use one of my USB ports to power the card, it results in 2xUSB3.0+3xUSB2.0, which is enough. However, I have to disconnect the cable everytime I put the notebook in the bag and connect it back when I connect external USB3.0 hdds. That gives me an idea of using one of +5V wires from a (unused) dockstation port.

Well how about getting a new power supply that provides an additional 5V output, which is normally around 2A.

snn47, my Coolermaster 120W PSU with 2xUSB refuses to provide power to this card. Anyway, I decided to leave it as is. Another stupid question - how does such adapter affect battery life, when nothing is plugged? Anyone performed tests on the subject?
