I would return it but it cost under $10, it would cost over $10 to ship it and the company would pay $3 toward shipping costs, so it is basically a choice of either saving $3 or eating $3, so to avoid all the hassle, I chose not to return it. Plus, there is no guarantee that they would find fault. I did find a 34mm with the UPD720200 chipset, but it is not flush either. Does anyone have any suggestion for like a $9 card that specifically states what chipset it has. This is the one I found

I wanted to know the capability so I put in a SSD that I know can do well over 200 MB/s. Below are the results.

That one actually brokee my branded card. I found 1.14.10.0 on the net, originally had 1.14.4.0. This has ever so slightly increased read and writes. The change is so small it is statistically insignificant (<1%)...................

hello

just bought an AKE card (marked as BC398 on ebay but in fact mine has no ref number)
as I was unable to identify I did install the driver for µPD720200 > didn't work so I tried with the µPD720201 driver and booop : it works !
next I succeeded a firmware update to 2.0.1.7
yes it is flush in my E6500 and I'm happy with the rates even if they're not the best ones : 47Mb/s on mixed file sizes ; 65Mb/s on video files
last but not least : same rates between two ext drives each one on a port of the AKE card
its price ? 2 euros ... unfortunately the shipping cost was 4 times the card's
been copying for hours : no problem
note : all drivers & firmwares & useful infos from station-drivers at the renesas page

regards

Try to suspend your laptop and power on it again (additional USB power cable, must be unplugged) to check for the power consumption error in USB Hub.

They do not list Apple or linux support. Looking on the net it does not appear most of the manufacturers do OS/X. LaCie seems to make a proprietary driver but then you are forced to use LaCie devices.

TBH I am not sure why support is not there. You would think there would be a great market to those with Apple laptops and express card not to mention Hackintosh and even Linux support (not too far of a stretch to port).

I haven't read this whole discussion, but have a couple questions regarding the whole premise.

The purpose of USB 3 is faster speed, much faster than USB 2. (And since we have been hearing about USB 3 for years now, and one sees USB 3 compatible devices for sale (such as external hard drives), I am surprised that most notebooks don't already have USB 3 ports. (Of course now there is Thunderbolt coming out, which is supposed to be still much faster, no? Perhaps notebook makers will go right to Thunderbolt and forget USB 3?)

Next question is--does a USB 3 port that is provided by an express card adapter really provide USB 3 speed? The data still has to go through the express card port. Does express card process data as fast as USB 3? No way that oen would get faster speeds than the express card can provide. If it is not providing USB 3 speed, what's the point? (That could be the reason that these are only available in China.)

I only have older notebooks. They have express card slots on them, which I am glad to have, as I use my notebook for some professional music applications, and have a pro sound expresscard, Echo Indigo IOX. However, whenever I look at new notebooks in a store. I never see express card slots on them. I thought the express card had become extinct, that PCMCIA was a thing of the past? Is that not true? If not, which companies still put express card slots in their notebooks, so I can look for one next time I am in the market to buy a new notebook?

It counts on the express slot speed. As an example the one I have in the Gateway only provides 1/2 speed or 2.5 Gbs, a full speed port would provide 5.0 Gbs. Now true USB 3.0 could provide 5.0 Gbs so no it really is never full speed with overhead etc. but could run close.

Now most HDD's, at least laptop ones, do not provide over the 128 MBs mine can do as seen in the atto of the SSD above on my machine so it is fast enough and way faster than the stock usb 2.0 slots I already had................

I have tested my flash drive which is 3.0 and yes throughput is well enough .. 60MB READ 25-30 WRITE
It depend of expresscard version as well ,oldest is 1.5 ,second generation is 2.5 ...
But this expresscard slot WASNT designed for speed but to use for other peripherals such external audio or lan or create port which was missing on laptop
In my case i JUSTwanted more usb ports cos macbook has 3 so now i have five 3 from them are already occupied with nano receivers and usb 3.0 external drive enclosure

For those using AKE expresscard 54 USB 3 + esata combi. You can get a driver update from ebay. In the expresscard listings there is a unbranded Orange card (T600) with a link to driver download. This will take you to V1.12.5.0 Notes on improvements are in files. TESTED!

Can someone please help me? I am trying to update the firmware on my ASMEDIA ASM1051 USB3.0/SATA controller but I haven't been able to figure it out. I've download firmware(s) & flash/firmware tool from station-drivers & can't figure out why it keeps failing. I've found instructions on how to do it, but everytime I do it it fails. The ASM1051 is detected by Windows & the firmware tool.

I've followed the instructions here:

www.station-drivers.com • Afficher le sujet - Tutoriel : Asmedia ASM-1051 Sata/USB 3.0 Controller

And here:

Cannot boot from big USB HDD - Boot from USB / Boot anywhere - reboot.pro

Ok, I've gone ahead and did that. But, just letting you know I'm using this ASMedia ASM1051 controller connected to an AKE Expresscard 3.0 BC618 with Fresco Logic FL1000 controller card, so its kind of related and looking for any possible support.

Can you please show me where to download the drivers ?

Please post a link ?

Secondly, there is a round hole in the middle of the express combi card, is this for the usb-to-power cable, so that both the esata and usb 3.0 are now powered as well ???

Do I plug the usb-to-power cable to the center round hole of the express combi card ???

Which version of this combi card is the latest and most stable ???

Please post the url link to the ebay store for me as well ...

Thank You for your time every bodies.

So iv read the entire post, but in the end I cant find what card is the best of the BC398 or bc618T?
What chip set is it that is recomended and give a good speed and easy drivers/firmware?

Iv come over a couple of these cards that look like AKE cards on ebay. They have VIA and asemdia 1042 chip.
Anyone have experience with them?

ASMedia cards are CR@P! Do NOT buy it.

IAfter messing with stupid firmware with "known issues" and awful drivers I got this with latest driver:

While prelatest driver gave me much better write speed.... Now even when I install prelatest one I still have cr@pped write speeds.

This is a speed I had and now I don't have...:(

Also USB devices will NOT RESUME from sleep mode.

After finding this thread I bought some time ago the 54mm AKE from Dealextreme to use in my Alienware M15x, this one: 34/54MM Express to USB 3.0 Card for Notebook (Max 5.0 Gpbs) - Worldwide Free Shipping - DX

(logo and tradekmarks not as shown, were like the AKE's webpage same)

Using a Kingston datatraveler elite 3.0 works perfect, but I've been mad with a external 2'5 usb 3.0 enclosure (the cheapest at dealextreme :D ), in medium to large file size transfer (usually over 500Mb) the disk goes disconnected. Tested everything, all drivers shown in this post, power from other usb port, external dc power... nothing worked.

Today i've oppened expresscard shield to see the chip, and it was a Asmedia ASM1042.... downloaded firmware and drivers from here ASMEDIA drivers & firmwares, flashed... and Eureka! it works

Even not being perfect I've been able to transfer a lot of bdrips with a single disconnection, a huge improvement.

So, in answer to your question.. using a tiny flat screwdriver and very, very carefuly removing the top shield of the card from the large side.... risky, but the alternative was trash can, i promise

Hope this helps to other dealextreme buyers, and thanks everybody around here for the thread, is awesome

Great forum!

I've spent the better part of an hour checking to see if anyone has the same problem as me, and I've come up empty...

I'm using the BC618D card (34mm)
I've installed the most recent drivers from the Fresco Logic site - version 3.5.93.0
The version I received came with the usb power adapter
I have 2 external HDD's. 1 is USB 2.0, the other is a USB 3.0 drive.
The USB 2.0 drive works flawlessly with the expresscard (with or without the power cable connected). In fact, data transfers are faster than what I get from the USB 2.0 ports that are built into my laptop!
The USB 3.0 drive constantly disconnects whenever I try to transfer a file. It goes through a sequence of connecting/disconnecting over and over. This happens whether I have the power connected or not.
The same USB 3.0 drive works flawlessly on any of the built in internal USB 2.0 ports on my laptop.

I'm beyond frustrated at this point as I'd really like to get the faster data transfers with this express card.

Can anyone give me any advice on what I can try to get this up and running?

Alot of times these constant connect/disconnect troubles are from the USB 3.0 cable. This is especially true of the older USB 3.0 cables but even a doc I recieved this year had a bad cable. Got a new cable and now all is well with usb 3.0 transfers...................

NP, mine was weird. You could put some pressure to get better contact and the USB would hold for a bit but let go and it would constantly disconnect going betweeen USB 2.0 and 3.0 speeds. A good quality cable (great user reviews) solved the connection and speed issues. It drove me nuts at first as the old cable would work with my card addapter but not my true USB 3.0 ports so I though it was not the cable but then it eventually started gettin flaky with the express card too.

Do all these AKE cards produce occasional power surges on USB when resuming from suspend? I have the combo USB3.0 & eSATA I'm fairly certain one of these surges has killed my KWorld UB499-2T twin tuner. Not such a bargain since the tuner was worth double what the card cost.

This must be your driver.
Here you download latest non-asus firmware, move bin file to this folder and delete older bin file situated there. Doubleclick on exe file.

You may risk with Asus firmware from this source.

All above is assuming you have AsMedia controller.

No luck. The card I have is made by AKE, not AsMedia

Wow. Found the software. There was an exe that I had to run that I didn't see earlier. All works well now!

If your card is a 3 port usb 3.0 adapter this link should work

The exe that will install the drivers is in a folder in a folder. It's set up weird...just look for the exe file.

Chil3, AKE doesn't mean anything. They all are AKE. But some of them have NEC (Reneseas) Controller while some have AsMedia. I didn't know you have 3 port one.

Thanks for the help though. The driver was packaged in a zipped folder in a strange way. Right there in front of me the whole time...

I don't really know all of the details on the controllers and drivers and whatnot. I thought AKE was one of the companies that made the cards. No matter, my card works and that's what I needed.

The USB results seem to be reverting to USB 2.0 speeds. Could be the driver, cable or enclosure. My usb 3.0 speeds capped somewhere in the 110 MB/s area with a SSD.

I picked up a 2 port off ebay for about 9 dollars which got here earlier, and did a quick test with a 3.0 flash drive. Oddly, Windows 8 picked it right up and I didn't even need a specific driver, but I did get a CD.
Edit: Actually my laptop went into standby somewhere after the 3rd test so its a bit wonky, I'll try retesting it later ^^;

As for what it looks like in my HDX and what the card itself looks like:

It is expensive. Why that one? e.g. did you have higher confidence that it wouldn't send any surges to a connected USB device?

Do you know what chip(set) is in it? e.g. NEC is one such.

You've had it something like more than 5 months?

How has it worked during this 5+ months?

Nice quote of of the 7th April 2012 post by Woonder (requoted by me above).

You've been doing your homework.

IMHO there is no good answer.

If you search Amazon for: expresscard 54

...you come up with a fair list of what can be bought. Unfortunately Amazon is poor with regard to accuracy of details on what you're buying, but fortunately they have great owner comments/reviews.

So to me it's like a shot in the dark as to what USB 3.0 chip you are getting, and there are several.

Some basic choices (all AKE? unsure about 1.b) boil down to:

1. 2 USB 3.0 female connectors and a small round hole for a power only USB cable (usually supplied).
a) NEC 720202 chip - BC398
b) unspecified chip - BC618T

2. 1 USB 3.0 female, 1 eSATA female, 1 small round hole/power - LT236
USB 3.0 = NEC 720202 chip; eSATA = JMB539 chip

3. 3 USB 3.0 female connectors FRESCO FL1100 chip - BC718
= = = = =

So I went with #2, but so far still have some driver conflict that I have to resolve.

What I've learned so far:

1. What I want is a power output and cable, as well as one or two working connectors, hence my choice of #2 w/USB and eSATA outs.

2. Forget about having a 54mm expresscard with 3 outputs; I just don't think it is practical.

Odds are that the eSATA connector isn't any faster than the USB 3.0, and that the limiting factor is the expresscard topology itself.

FWIW this is the one I got from Amazon at $11.98: Amazon.com: Hidden Inside USB 3.0 USB3.0 + eSATA II 2.0 Combo to Express Card ExpressCard 54 54mm Adapter Converter Card: Computers & Accessories

Looking at "recent" posts I see that it is shown in post #396 and post #350.

So my own footnote is that getting it to work is a PITA!

Anyway, I tried to get tijo to say something about the Startech unit that he bought and that Amazon sells for ~$35, but he's clearly reluctant to say anything. The fact that Amazon itself and 34 3rd party vendors sell it may (or may not) mean that it is more trustworthy.

That's my long winded tale so far. :)

More like I haven't visited this thread since my last post here. :p I'd have to run benchmarks on it again, but I did notice it wasn't playing nice with one of my USB3.0 enclosures.

Now, on to the specs, it has been working perfectly fine since I got it aside from problems with said enclosure. It uses a NEC/Renesas chip (µPD720200 according to the manufacturer). It's this one to be exact: http://ca.startech.com/Cards-Adapte...ard-SuperSpeed-USB-3-Card-Adapter~ECUSB3S254F.
