    4GB Dominates! lol.

My dad had it upgraded from 2 to 4 before he gave it to me. Now I recently upgraded to 64bit to molest the 4GB it has, and I just started studying 3Ds Max. Haha and I occasionally do posters with Photoshop, as well as video rendering for school.

My first notebook, the Acer Aspire 1800 had 2x256mb.
My second notebook, the Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Xai 1545 something had 2x1gb.

My current notebook, the HP Compaq nw8440 has 2x2gb but thanks to my Intel mainboard i can only use 3,5gb.

4GB is the magic number. 2x 2GB DDR3 is very affordable, and more than enough memory for even the most resource demanding games, like GTA4 and Crysis. I've hit 3-3.5GB in those cases, but doing everyday things now I'm only at half capacity. Even if I do get into Photoshop work, I can't see myself needing more than 4GB. It's the last upgrade on my mind, but we'll see. At this point it would be more practical to upgrade to 4GB of lower latency RAM, and even that's laughably practical.

Just a follow-up--how much does a 4GBx2 kit cost nowadays? Or at least a stick of 4GB DDR2? I'm after the 800Mhz ones, or if not the one lower than that (lol is that the PC6400?) As I can see After Effects and Premiere Pro are quite on the hungry side of RAM.

All my systems are 'standardized' with Win7x64u and 8GB of RAM.

I tried using my 'digital notebook' (U30Jc) with just the 4GB it shipped, but felt very confined - even with an SSD powering the system.

If I could have 16GB RAM across the board on all the different setups I use, I would switch in a blink. ;)

Virtual PCs (sometimes called "virtual machines") are for running 2 or more operating systems simultaneously. Each instance of a virtual machine has to have it's own memory reserved for it so that it doesn't affect the other OSes that are running in real or virtual mode.

You can have Windows XP running regularly and have Windows 7 and Linux also running in virtual machines. You need more ram for that so each OS has enough to run properly. To do all this, you need a virtual machine manager like VMWare which will ask you how much memory to give each virtual PC and then wall off that amount for the exclusive use of that OS.

It also helps a lot if you have a CPU that has VT-x enabled. Some also have VT-d for directed I/O. Look up your CPU on Intel's or AMD's website(s). With some BIOSes, you have to enable that CPU feature (if it has it).

Windows 7 has a feature you can install (I forget the name of it) which allows you to boot from a choice of .vhd files (virtual hard drives) and load up the OS of your choice. But I don't know if that feature allows simultaneous running of different OSes.

I can't always access my company's servers to test on (or the connection is slow) so I run my own servers on my laptop. 16GB means I can have a database and app server running with plenty of space to spare.

I know someone else who ran virtual PC's for the sake of trying out other OS's. Easy to set up another version of Windows/Linux to mess around with without having to mess up your main OS install.

I've got a whopping 12GB of RAM on my ASUS G51Jx since the seller which I got it at offered a bonus 6GB from the stock 6GB. I thought it was a pretty good deal so I took it and I must say, 12GB is more than enough for just work, gaming and video editing and conversion.

I'm running those programs on 4GB and I'm nowhere close to being maxed out (well, unless I have multiple instances of both programs running at the same time). Or it could be that I'm just not running large simulations. Either way, I'm not seeing RAM as being the bottleneck in those cases.

3gb in a D630 but will move to a single 4gb module when I get $120 for one from NewEgg. This laptop will be more tuned for battery life and cool running and a single 4gb module will help reach that goal better than 2 :)
