I have a 1024 crucial card and a stock 256 hp card, Im thinking about upgrading but I need to get some money. I have a compaq v2000 with a turon 2.0 in it. I have made over 25 dvd's (including video slideshows, movie clips and more) for weddings aniversarys and more. I do have a desktop but my most recent projects have been on my laptop and it handles it just as good as the pent 4ht 4 gigs of ram desktop does. I like this laptop.

Oh yea the COmpaq v2000 is a peice of junk untill you get at least a gig of ram and a nice hard drive, I got the WD 80gig 7200 rpm hd. I didnt need a huge amound of storage because I have numorous external drives and like to keep my comp free of junk so it will run fast. I play a few games on occasion, they require high graphics and they run fine on my laptop with a ATI Mobility Radeon 9000, (Also Upgraded from ATI Mobility 200M)

    128 megabytes...

This laptop is nearly seven years old.

Typically, I'm running Firefox with only two or three tabs at any given time, so I do fine.

I was using a dell cpi with 64mb ram and firefox for awhile, and it was not as bad as I thought!

These days though, 1 gig is what I have....don't really need anymore but for moderate gaming, I wouldn't really have any less....

How much RAM do you have on your laptop?
    -1GB in my v2000z, 2GB RAM in my I9300

What type of applications do you run?
-Office (of both the Open and Microsoft varieties), Firefox, iTunes/WMP 11, GAIM, some simple games, and the occasional round of CS:S for my v2000z. My I9300, on the other hand...all of that plus lots of Quake 4, F.E.A.R., Condemned: CO, FarCry, BF2, etc. And I'm beta testing Vista on my I9300, which is proving to be one of the most poorly coded operating systems I've ever had the misfortune to install. Seriously, 30%+ RAM usage to idle at the desktop with 2GB of RAM? Preposterous.

How many applications do you typically run at one time?
-3 to 4, although obviously I quit everything windowed to play intensive games.

How much RAM do you have on your laptop?
1gig, upgrading to 2 gigs soon.

What type of applications do you run?
Firefox, iTunes, AIM, Teamspeak, MS outlook, Microsoft Office Apps, Windows Media Player, PDANet,

How many applications do you typically run at one time?
3-6, even though 1 gig is more than enough to run what I'm using right now, ram is so cheap that it wouldn't hurt, besides, it'll def. help during bf2 and cod2 :D

Yup... bf2 sure is a RAM hog, and the more the better for that game. The FPS increase by a lot, when going from 1GB to 2GB's!

    My V6Va has 1GB of PC4200.

My main apps are FrameMaker, RoboHelp, Captivate, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Firefox. I run 2-3 apps at a time. Not much of a laptop gamer anymore; getting a desktop SFF for that.

this is all so confusing.... If RAM controls how many windows that you can have open at the same time, than whats the point of Dual core?

Dual core means that the more applications you have open, they won't slow down the computer overall. Classic analogy:
    file cabinet = hard drive
    desk = RAM
    You = Processor

A bigger hard drive/file cabinet means you can store more files. A bigger desk/RAM means more of them can be open and used at the same time. You do the processing of the files, but you can only look at one at a time. If you have a dual core, it's like having a friend beside you at the desk helping you look at the files.

That's not exactly how everything works, but it gives you a good overviews as to why dual cores are still necessary with lots of RAM.

I've bought 2GB in anticipation that Vista will swallow most of it.

Realistically, I probably don’t need that much RAM for the work I do. 1GB would probably suit me fine, even when Vista comes along.

Thats funny. I have over 512 but under 1 gig. No option for that that I saw.

With my CPU under 50% at most times (max is 1.73, generally runs under 900) I run Warcraft 3, Warcraft 3 Map Editor, AIM, Windows Media Player, Netscape, and Bearshare all at once, the only repercussion is that the Warcraft Map Editor takes a bit longer to place objects. When i turn my underclocking off for a moment, everything runs perfect.

Just upgraded to 1.5 gb from 1.0 gb. I can't feel a difference for the most part, but media (DVD, music) seems to open faster and run a bit smoother. Maybe its just my imagination.

Not entirely, gautam3. Windows pages stuff out according to the percentage and amount of memory currently used. It can leave more things in memory for you to switch between, and background processes don't have to page memory in from swap nearly as much as with a lesser amount of RAM.

Only 512, because it was difficult to find a 14" in my price range with slightly decent graphics, and I can upgrade the RAM later but not the graphics :) Depending on the relative prices in a few months I'll go to 1 or 1.5gb.

2GB Patriot 667 Mhz, which has worked rather well for several months now.

I usually have Trillian, Firefox with half a dozen tabs or so, iTunes, F@H, and maybe a MMORPG or Gimp. I also use Norton Antivirus, which hogs memory in ways it shouldn't (I know, a lot of tech-savvy people don't use it, but I'm too lazy to get something else and it works pretty well).

I have 2 GB but I hardly ever run multiple things at once.

(Maybe when I am burning DVD's).

    I got the 2 GB @ 667 Mhz, because I am greedy.

At least I admitted it, I feel lighter already :)

I noticed ram had a lot to do with DVD writing speeds. AT 512mb my laptop could handle 4x but 8x took longer coz it was straining the system trying to write so fast. Now 8x is faster than 4x but still not as fast as it should be. I reckon with 2GB ram (well, 1792mb as the gpu would take 256mb) it would write 8x at full speed!

In most of these tests having 2 GB had no significant improvement vs. having 1 GB. These tests did not include "basic" tasks.

I run photoshop, edit videos, run 32 track Protools sessions and I don't ever use over 1 GB of ram (except when trying to stitch 27, 3 MB photos together, then I actually saw Photoshop use over 1 GB).

I don't do these tasks all at the same time, only my gaming machine uses 2 GB because I saw proof that it needed it.

Right now, 2 x 512 MB DDR400 PC3200 (bus speed 333 MHz) running at 370 MHz with the OC.

I do a lot of internet browsing, music playing, sound (WAV and MP3) recording, encoding, decoding, and editing, and light to moderate gaming.

    This Christmas, I am getting 2 x 1 GB of OCZ DDR400. :D

I think vista needs 1.5 gb. right out of the box it sets 256 mb for video ram. even on my machine which has 512 mb video ram already.

It runs 480 mb right from boot up. you need 1.5 gb to even be at you 1gb xp machine. Thats enough headroom but 1 gb is not.

Odd choices for the poll in terms of RAM selections. Could have just listed several popular sizes like 1GB or 2GB instead of something in between, but whatever.

I have 2GB in my Gateway MX6931 and hoping to get 4GB (2x2GB) someday, but right now they're over $500 per stick so that would mean 4GB of RAM costs more than the laptop did.

Nearly as many people with 2Gb as with 1Gb. One has to wonder if the precedent for ram is changing from at least 1Gb and heading towards 2 or is it just that we have hardcore laptoppers on NBR?

my laptop came with 1gig but upgraded that to 2 gigs,

Reasons: windows takes about 300 megs of that away possible more at some times..
Doom 3 games can take up to 600 megs

so really only have around 100 to play with. sometimes less sometimes more... so i went out and bought the 2 gigs, as thinking of going to 4 at one point

2GB should have been a choice (unless you actually didn't want to know how many notebooks had exactly 2GB). I can't vote because I don't have greater than 1GB but less than 2GB and I don't have greater than 2GB. My other laptop has 768MB.
