As I mentioned above, it's fixed now :p I am currently stress testing it at 12.5x with 1.2125v, so far it runs stable for 25min, I think I am gonna keep it at 12.5x, I think it's a pretty good result? Considering it's a 0.05v undervolt already :p 3.325Ghz sounds good enough to me.

If CPU-Z shows Extreme in the Specifications box then ThrottleStop will be able to change your multiplier. You don't need to add anything to the INI file in that situation.

lidowxx: Glad to hear you got this working. Post a CPU-Z / ThrottleStop screen shot to show everyone how your CPU looks now.

This is the screenshot after playing resident evil 5 for 1 hour or so, at 3.33Ghz/1.2125v, cpu peaked at 58C/56C, gotta love the x9100 and the temp :D I think I am gonna settle with this clock/voltage  I may raise it higher when I do ps2/dolphin emulations later sometime. Thanks, unclewebb for making this wonderful program :D Everyone should buy an extreme CPU :p

Your temps are great. Don't be afraid to bump the multiplier up another notch to 13. 3458 MHz is a sweet spot for the X9100. If you need a little more voltage to maintain stability, that's not going to be a problem either. Actual full load voltage is always less than what you set VID to so you still have lots of room to play if you like.

I just checked out a French forum and saw one guy having a great time today overclocking his Quad. He's got the multi up to 15.5 with a VID setting of 1.4375. It's stable enough for some benching too. :)

    http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/5264/p44g4133.png

It will be a lot easier keeping your Dual Core cool if you ever decide to go faster. The quad was reaching the thermal throttling limit.

The lidowxx screenshot of Throttle Stop shows SLFM set and Multiplier set to 12,5, but FID is 3 and the information at the bottom shows 6.00 x 133.0 MHz = 798.0 MHz.
It seems to me the X9100 is running only in SLFM mode or am I wrong? Therefore the low temps?
Could someone explain the screenshot of the X9100 to me please?
I've set same options with a T9900 and the FID is always above 11.5! Take alook at my screenshot.

If you want a low multiplier at idle try clicking on the Power Saver option.

The testing I did showed that at idle, having a low multiplier and a low VID on a 45nm Core 2 Duo doesn't make any significant difference to power consumption or your core temperature because the CPU automatically goes into a deeper sleep state where it uses a lower VID anyhow.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/6369641-post5060.html

Do your own testing to see if Power Saver works for you or not. I find that it's more useful for the older 65nm Core 2 Duos.

the 11* difference between cores has me a little worried, but I haven't had any probs yet...

what is the max safe voltage to put on a C2Q for an "everyday" overclock?

Just did some extensive testing, it seems to me this x9100 starts to get really power-hungry once passed x12.5, it stayed stable at x13 with 1.300v, any lower than 1.300v, it went nuts!! It's quite a huge overvolt, considering it runs completely stable at x12.5 with 1.2125v!! Temp hit 83C during stress test, at x12.5/1.2125v the max temp only reached 71C while stressing. It seems to me that x12.5 is a sweet spot for chip, runs with little voltage and stays very cool: :)

Sometimes TS and CPU-Z report different thing at the same time, but the mismatch of information is usually temporary, SLFM mode only kicks in while the system is on idle, the low temp is achieved with the combination of undervolt/zalman nc2000 cooler/ICD-7. If the chip was only in SLFM mode(798MHZ), I would have lagged like a snail during gaming.

Intel's core temperature sensors are not accurate temperature monitoring devices. A difference of 10C between cores is not unusual even when the actual core temperature from core to core is exactly the same. Don't lose too much sleep over what a 45nm Intel Core 2 sensor says.

I run my QX9650 everyday at 1.328 volts which is equivalent to a VID setting of at least 1.350. In a laptop, a high core temperature usually becomes an issue before the voltage gets too high. Use only as much voltage as you need to run stable. It looks like you still have room to go faster if you want. In a laptop, sometimes the increased heat isn't worth it.

lidowxx: I agree. If you have to increase the voltage significantly to increase the multiplier only 0.5 more then you've found the practical 24/7 limits for your CPU at 12.5. Save 13.0 for benching. :)

Yeah, I will stick with x12.5/1.2125v for daily usage, a x0.5 increase brings 133Mhz, about 4.3% boost for the x9100, which is not too much even for CPU intensive programs, the increased heat/voltage ain't worth it at x13.

hmm.... my best run so far was with the multi. set at 10.5, and voltage set at 1.750 on my q9100 ES

    :(

I'v just been using 3dmark06 for stress testing, the best cpu score so far is a low 4000ish

You should go into options and check "core 2 mobile CPU"

1.750v is impossible its reading the voltages wrongly.

I'm still not to happy with my results, so i've ordered artic mx3 just to be sure i've tried everything that's in my power.

Everytime I break the 3Ghz barrier my temps go over 90c when i'm gaming.

I have a question, in order for me to even run 12 multiplier i have to crank up VID to 1.3750 otherwise i'm getting hardware failures in prime and 1-2 minute later BSOD.

I've noticed several users with a much higher multiplier then my self and yet have a low VID, is this due to one's PSU or motherboard? Like i've said before i'm running an np8662.

How come users with similar laptops like my self can run at much higher multiplieres, yet lower VIDS and still remain a steady temperature and I can't

    Thanks

    because every chip is different.

qx9300 and q9200 have no discernible physical differences whatsoever. qx9300 are just the ones that happened to have been stamped more precisely which leads to the cores being more efficient.

    Hi all!

I'm running Q9200ES on a Packard Bell Ipower GX with GTX260m. With throttlestop i'm at 3066MHz 1.165V. I can get 3200MHz with 1.2V but it gets so damn hot so no point. Even now i can run prime just couple of minutes because overheat. By playing NeedForSpeed Hot Pursuit it gets up to 83'C...

Tried everything for the laptop's cooling, different thermal paste etc., no help. Got a cooling pad and that helps a little.

Your CPU will survive at 83C. I'm not so sure about your lap.

Many laptop manufacturers designed heatsinks that are adequate at cooling one of thees CPUs at default specs but the same heatsink can't keep up with an overclocked and over volted Core 2 Quad CPU. Make sure the heatsink makes firm contact with the CPU. It might be possible to slightly redesign how the heatsink is mounted with washers or what have you to increase the pressure and improve cooling.

I suggest you lower clocks... had this overheating issue with my Dv6 and best solution was notebook cooling pad and not ocing.. 3.2GHz is quite high for a quad.. clock down to 2.8GHz...

    Here's my results:

266x10.5=2800MHz @ 1.0500V (lowest voltage possible, stays quite "cool")
    266x11.0=2933MHz @ 1.1000V (gets hotter...)
266x11.5=3066MHz @ 1.1500V (hot but still usable in gaming etc., don't want run prime95 for a long time because of melting)
266x12.0=3200MHz @ 1.2000V (HOT, maybe gaming but with prime95 temperature goes skyhigh)

    Tried also:
    266x13.0=3458MHz @ 1.2750V (works but no use... 1000'c)
    266x13.5=3591MHz @ 1.3000V (still works but... well...)

Old procesor was T9300 2.5GHz and cpu fan didn't boost never with that.

New Need For Speed Hot Pursuit runs 60fps, with old processor it got maybe half of that. Funny how well the "old" GTX260m still runs anything. Can't wait Crysis2... :)

    EDIT: 3066MHz need 1.1500V

EDIT2: Maybe none of these voltages are stable... Tuned with wprime and when i run prime95... BSOD

wPrime stable might be good enough for most games but you'll need more voltage or less MHz to be Prime95 stable. A QX9200 brings new life to an old laptop. Someone just needs to design a little self contained water cooling kit they can bolt on the side of their laptop. Does you laptop model use the same heatsink for Dual and Quad core CPUs? I think some models use an upgraded heatsink when they are shipped with Quads. Have a look on EBay and maybe you will get lucky and find a better heatsink that fits.

There maybe is another heatsink for quad core cpus... Because this has quite small copper"zone". So cores doesn't get covered fully, it leaves tiny peace of corner out of both cores. There's anyway aluminum surrounding this copper thing on heatsink. Sorry my bad english. :)

    Ah I see thanks :)

Update: After replacing my fan with a new one, i've got better cooling somewhat, and the sound level isn't as high.

I noticed someone mentioned a very high clock with a voltage at 1.4 or so.

If i use a mp (multiplier) 12.5-13 I have to crank up vid to 1.4, and 2 minutes later prime95 crashes and then BSOD.

Comparing my stats with other users it seems like I have to crank more power then usual just to peak at 3Ghz+.

I'm feeling a bit scared of going past 1.4, i'm not even sure if it's healthy to continue even further with more power?

As of right it seems stable at:

    Multiplier: 12
    VID: 1.3875

Anyone have some unofficial stats in terms of how much juice we can crank the chipset with before it smells funny :p

If going past 12 mp and I need a higher VID of 1.4 is that a sign i've reached the maximum point of this chipset on my end?

    Hej Finland :)

It's very interesting to notice how different everything is and we both have the same processor but with a different laptop.

I'm running a multiplier of 12 and VID at 1.3875. If I try to increase the multiplier past 12 I have to crank up VID at 1.4 and even then it's not stable.

But you haven't even gone past my barrier :O

    This is very interesting.

Here's how I use both applications:

Prime95 I only use it to see if the VID is high enough before getting a BSOD

ORTHOS: This is the one I primarily use to see the temps after a stress test.

Update: multiplier of 12 and VID at 1.3875 after an hour or so i'm running black ops or mass effect 2 at 94C... ... hahahhahahah

That HS is for the dual core. The heat pipe is not designed for the TDP od the quad cores. I went from that type stock with my P7805 and x9100 and the temps are about 10c or better lower under load with the smaller copper one.

Sorry if this is indeed in the wrong section. But i've spent the entire night trying to solve my problem.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...fps-drops-all-games-my-controller-broken.html

As of right now I can't use my pcie express soundcard, create xfi notebook. Everytime I try any game every 5 minute or so my FPS goes from (blackops) 80 down to 20-30 and the sound gets all garbled up. In Mass Effect it's the same, but the fps drop isn't that huge compared to blackops.

Using the onboard realteak i have no issues besides poor audio compared to xfi.

I have to ask is it possible somehow when I mixed around with CPU clock and voltage (throttlestop only) I somehow damaged the xfi card or the actual pciex16 port, is this possible at all?

Of course this is my own fault, i'm just curious if someone with much greater expertise can shed some light on this :)

Again sorry if this is off topic, but i'm so tired trying to find a solution.

EDIT: I've also tried reverting back to stock CPU settings (before OC) and the problem remains

About all you can do is swap your sound card into a different laptop and see if it works in there or swap a new sound card into your laptop.

Sound cards can crap out. Did you try completely removing it and then reinstalling it with new drivers? When you are overclocking and are not 100% stable, it's possible to corrupt a Windows file or two which can lead to some random and hard to diagnose problems.

Hey man! Thanks again for helping me.

I might add, yesterday I cleaned out the entire hdd, and re-installed w7 from scratch (thought about the corrupt register before), so everything is clean as a whistle.

Yes i've tried the soundcard on another laptop and there's no issues.

UPDATE: When i'm using my m-audio (usb powered) I'm experiencing the same issues.

    Black ops 5 minutes ago

FPS around 60-80fps, then the sound starts to garbble up, and my fps goes from 80 down to 20.

Mass Effect 2 isn't as bad, only a 10fps drop when the sound garbbles up.

Using stock CPU settings right now, same issues.

Have you run a ThrottleStop log file and watched what your CPU is doing when this garbling starts to happen? If there was a significant drop in CPU performance, maybe this is what is causing your problem. Also try logging with GPU-Z and make sure there are no GPU throttling issues while gaming.

    Good idea!

I booted blackops during the logging, and i had severe lag during: (put the time index in bold in the log)

    03:13
    03:19
    03:22
    03:23
    03:24

Sometimes the severe lag lasts 20 seconds and sometimes even longer.

My fps goes from 80 down to 20 in an instant and the sound just goes into slowmode/crackling/etc.

Another day, re-installed windows again, with new beta drivers for my system, still the same insane lag.

I ran a 3dmark06 test, and the numbers weren't changed compared to the last time (good thing).

Everytime I boot a game I can hear this "flinching, crackling, stuttering" then I know when the map is loaded I will get tons of lag.

Or sometimes the game's runs great for a couple of minutes, then BOOM insane fps drops.

I booted to my linux kernel (archlinux) and I have no sound issues at all, but that doesn't mean much since creatives drivers on linux are pretty horrendous (function wise) so i'm probably running a basic sound setup.

Upon close look into my motherboard, cpu and gpu there doesn't seem to be any evidence of hardware damage, of course this is just by using my own eyes and smelling if there's anything burnt :p

Running various cpu tests, they all return the same value i had before on stock or modified settings (before lag).

    Well i'm puzzled..

Your CPU seems to be running at full speed with no signs of throttling.

I couldn't tell much by looking at your GPU-Z log since most of the data seems to be missing. On the GPU-Z sensors tab, make sure that you have checked, Continue refreshing this screen while GPU-Z is in the background as well as the Log to file option. If frame rates are dropping like a rock, the GPU must be throttling. Have you ever done any Furmark testing so you can watch what happens to your GPU speed as it heats up?

When you post a log file, try using the code html tags before and after your log. That keeps your log form filling up an entire page and keeps the NBR mods happy.

    [code*]
    paste log file in here
    [/code*]

Leave out the * on each line and your post including the TS headings will look a lot better and be easier to read.

As you can see i'm only posting stats from blackops, because that's where the huge fps drops happens. In mass effect the sound noise is still the same but fps wise it's like 10-15 fps max from 60. While in blackops i can go from 80 down to 20 in a split second!

    Game: black ops
Lag: sound stuttering, glitching, crackling, huge fps drop

    Occurs at time index:

    23:02 main menu
    23:07 end of match
    23:22 during a match
    23:29 menu
23:35 during a match, feels like it lasted roughly 20-40 seconds
    36
    23:45-46 during a match

log is too big to post here,
    Code:
Date , GPU Core Clock [MHz] ,[/url] <--- pastebin

I've edited my post accordingly using the code tag as you suggested, like you said it's far easier on your eye to read. Great to know at least my cpu is doing it's job then.

My thanks again unclewebb for your help. I'm sending you a small donation today for your excellent application throttlestop and for your excellent first hand support on these forums, thumbs up!!

Every chip, paste application, heatsink is different, you will have to experiment.

GPU-Z shows times when your GPU MHz and GPU memory speed are dropping.

A couple of those times are at:

    23:06:55
    23:29:31
    23:33:29
    23:35:15
    23:38:58

Just before this happens, the GPU Load decreases significantly so it looks like you might have done an ALT+TAB out to the desktop to look at something or maybe there is another reason for these drops.

If you weren't doing an ALT+TAB then try to find a program that locks your GPU clocks to the 3D clocks and see if that helps.

Hi, What's TS short for? I haven't OC'd my GPU at all, it's all stock.

Hi! Those time frames you just posted are the one's when i'm lagging inside the game. I didn't ALT+TAB while the game and gpuz was running. Curious what would be the reason for this downlock, I mean is it the OS or some sort of application or is the card going bad?

I'm gonna try rivatuner and see if something improves during a gaming session, thanks again!

TS is ThrottleStop. Everyone at NBR knows that. :)

Your GPU temperature didn't seem out of the ordinary so I'm not sure what's causing your problem. Maybe you have a bad GPU sensor that randomly tells the GPU to slow down or something else mysterious like that. Something is definitely not right if you were gaming or trying to game the whole time during that log file.

Most GPU cards have a 2D speed, a 3D speed and an intermediate speed somewhere between those two speeds. Your GPU was mostly dropping down to the intermediate speed in the log file.

In the ThrottleStop log file you posted earlier, here is the start of a slow down where the multiplier drops down from 9.0 to 6.0 and bounces around there for about 3 minutes.

    Code:

How do you have your Control Panel -> Power Options set up? If you want maximum performance then you should have the Minimum processor state set to 100% until you figure out what's going on. The 6 multiplier means you have dropped down from 2400 MHz to 1600 MHz.

I have used 3.6ghz/1.32v for my x9100 for a while, but today I got a lockup while running dolphin(wii emulation). I began to suspect it was not 100% stable, although I tested it with orthos for 15min. So I downloaded prime95 and tested again, guess what, it threw in an error within 10 sec!! I raised the voltage to 1.35 but still the error didn't stop! I find its not worth it to increase voltage anymore and take a step back to 3.458ghz and find the stable voltage is 1.31V, tested with wprime95 for 30 min, its 100% stable without any errors, although prime95 pushed the CPU to 90 C range.

Unclewebb, I think it's important to note that orthos is not a reliable program to stress test stability any more, prime95 is the way to go, you might stay 100% stable with orthos, but prime95 will really push the CPU to its limit while orthos can not.

    Hi,
I brought this over here, it does seem even with the stock theme's etc the right is slightly clipped and the form itself needs slight widening and slightly taller...........

Edit; it is more noticable with WindowBlinds Sublime theme...............

TANWare: Thanks for showing me that. For some reason it is chopping pixels off from the right side and from the bottom compared to how it looks in default Vista or Windows 7.

I'll see if there is anything I can do. I might have to create a special version for you with some extra space on those two sides so when it does the chop, it will still look OK.

Musuta: I don't know anything about laptop fan speed control so I don't have any idea where to start and I'm not planning on starting any more projects. Sorry.

lidowxx: Orthos was originally based on the Prime95 code but that was a long time ago. There have been quite a few Prime95 updates since then so maybe the newer versions work the CPU a little harder. I've been recommending Prime95 for a long time. A computer that is Prime95 Small FFTs and Blend stable has always been good enough for me. moral_hazard likes IBT and LinX which will quickly show you just how stable your overclock really is. Those two create a lot more heat compared to any real world application I use so I've found that in a laptop, Prime95 is a more realistic test. If you are Prime95 stable but not quite LinX stable, I think you will be stable enough for the majority of apps that the majority of people run. If not, then you will have to add more voltage or back your overclock off another notch.

OK, I had gone through several themes and hadn't just loaded the one I use from the default. So I first unloaded WB and went with a default theme (first pic). Then reloaded WB after boot with Sublime. All good to go now............... :)
