Shredder11: Thanks for sharing your experience. I've tried to search T7600 in my local internet shopping website and it seems like nobody selling it or may not even existed in our region. Nevertheless, T7400 and T7200 is available and I would like to try 1 of those. The local IT shops selling it around RM50 to RM100 (around USD15~35) for a used T7200.I didn't ask for a new 1-does intel still produce this cpu?..

Any advice on buying/installing used processor?

If you can get a T7200 for $15, even up to $25, it's a fair deal, especially considering you're not in the US and prices tend to be higher elsewhere. Don't bother getting new; the part has been EoL for almost 5 years now.

Hi i have a T5200 CPU on 945PM chipset in my 5 yr old HP DV 9222 TX laptop. Chipset supports 533/667 Mhz fsb but my CPU runs at 533.

My ram is think is 667 running at 533. I got 2 ram sticks. 1gb x 1 and 2gb x 1. Is it possible to upgrade my cpu? Any heating, power issues?

    @maverickwhistler
The reason your CPU runs on 533MhZ FSB is because that's the best it can do.
Its not a 677MhZ FSB cpu, therefore it won't run on a higher FSB frequency - and its probably why your RAM is working on a lower speed.

I think that it would be possible for you to upgrade to a T7600 CPU (at least, that's what the first page of this thread indicates - and your chipset would seem to have a Merom, so, a T7600 cpu should should work).

    Dear Forum Members,

I own a laptop with Asus Z96S mainboard, currenty with T7500 CPU.

    Northbridge: Intel CRESTLINE 965PM.

What would be the best CPU supported by this Mainboard?

    Thank you in advance

Has anyone faced any heating issues? Correct me if im wrong, my current fan and heat sink can dissipate the heat generated by my existing CPU T5200. If i add in a powerful cpu, wont it generate excess heat? Will my heatsink and fan be able to dissipate that much as well? How much difference in performance are we looking at? say an upgrade from current 1.6ghz dual core to 2.1 or 2.3?

I have upgrade my processor to t7200 last month and seems to be a lot of improvement in speed (or maybe just a placebo effect). It runs cooler too after I clean up the fin on the heat sink. Having TempCore installed, it says my CPU temp is at 57deg. Thanks for your help.

I bought a new HD (Western Digital WD1600B EVS 160Gb 5200rpm) to replace my Hitachi 40Gb on my D620. I formatted the HD to 2 partition and installed Win XP SP2 on C:.

Having all drivers installed, I tried to install AVG AntiVirus 2013 to the laptop and halfway through a Blue Screen pops out. I find the performance of the XP also decrease before the BSOD issue. Is there any way I could solve this problem?

That question maybe not relevant to processor/intel topic.

Intel Pentium T4500 is a Penryn processor with socket PGA478 ( here). Here's a list by Intel of Penryn CPUs ( here). The QX9300 quad core seems to be an option, I'm not sure if your heatsink can cool the heat it produces though (a pentium dual core vs. top mobile quad core of its time).

A Intel Core 2 Duo T9900 could possibly work (same 35W max TDP and voltages).

You probably can't use the QX9300, but the regular 1066MHz FSB Penryns should work up through the T9900. I'd recommend something like T9600 or P8700, though; T9800/T9900 just aren't a very good value.

First of all a huge thanks to Commander Wolf! After so many hours on the internet I finally found this most helpful thread.

I am trying to upgrade my parent's laptop because it is just too slow.

    Laptop: Sony Vaio VGN-NR120E, T2310 cpu, chipset GL960 DDR2 533 1GB ram.
(mobo supports only up to 2gb ram)

After I ordered 2GB of the appropriate ram, I thought maybe a cpu upgrade isnt a bad idea. and then i ended up here

My question is about that chipset (GL960). It says it supports only a few processors, but as i've seen so far on this thread, it can run with other processors as well.
Since the FSB on that T9500 is 800 MHz, do you have to get RAM which is also 800 MHz or will the 533MHz RAM that i ordered be ok with such a processor? (Forgive me if this is a noob question)

So gnzmgn, did you get higher clocked ram? or are you using the 533MHz?

If your particular GL960 implementation plays well with the 800MHz FSB stuff, then it will do so regardless of the speed of RAM. The reverse is also true: if your GL960 implementation does not play well with the 800MHz FSB stuff, it won't take it regardless of what speed of RAM you have.

    Ok i see.
I went through the thread a little more and found that someone actually tried a T8100 with the GL960 chipset and it didnt work for them.
I ordered a T7500, hoping that will work out well. The only thing that worries me is if it will run too hot, because that cpu is clocked at 2.2GHz.

Anyone know if the T7500 runs cooler or hotter than the T2310?

Nominally they both have the same TDP, but the T7500 may be a little hotter in practice. If your system can handle a T2310, it should be able to handle the T7500, though.

    Successfully upgraded laptop.
Sony VAIO VGN-NR120E went from T2310 to T7500 with the GL960 chipset.
    Thank you for your help!

The original cpu ran at 1.46GHz. This one is at 2.2GHz and runs cooler! Couldn't have asked for more :)

somebody asked a very good question back in 2010 but nobody seems to have answered this question on this thread.
i am in the same situation.
could someone please answer the following question.

    Thanks

    Hi there,

I've been a keen follower of this website ever since the idea of upgrading my sister's HP\Compaq 6720s laptop with a GL960 chipset came to me! Thanks to this website, I successfully upgraded her Celeron M 540 to a Core 2 Duo T5750, which runs a lot more efficiently and powerfully, and her battery life has increased significantly due to the SpeedStep technology included in the new CPU.

However, I unfortunately received the video problem, but my sister eventually worked around that by doing a Startup Repair on Windows 7 everytime she boots her laptop up, although I should be receiving my PC2-4200 memory (thanks to a tip from this website again!).

My question is, I've come across a cheap T8100 in recent days and seeing as I have a new Core i3 spec, I am fascinated into the idea of upgrading hers once more. Do you think this CPU, or any Penryn-based C2D CPU would work with this board? Also, would it be worth a BIOS upgrade before I do anything else, and by using an 800FSB CPU, would I need to upgrade my memory once more to 667 or 800Mhz?

    Many thanks for your help.

800MHz FSB penryns will probably work, but it's always a crapshot with the GL960. Nobody can say for sure unless it's been tried. Upgrading the BIOS will increase your chances of success. You won't need to change the RAM; this chipset can't run RAM faster than 667MHz anyway.

Hello guys, my parents have the HP Compaq Presario CQ71 210SV laptop, with an Intel Pentium T4200 2Ghz with 1Mb cache. The machine is out of warranty, and as it's starting to age I'm thinking about upgrading its processor to one with at least 4 Mb cache. Which processors will work?

    regards,

It's difficult to say for sure what will work due to bios limitations, but anything from a Socket P will fit and should work. See the first post in the thread and look under Socket P. For a 4meg cache, the T7x00 series should do the trick.

Not really. They would in benchmarks, but unless they are really pushing things (like doing video rendering, etc.) they would probably never notice the difference.

I went from a T3400 to a T7500 and the difference is so slight I'm not sure it was worth the time involved. I only spent $5 US for the T7500, but it took a complete teardown to replace the cpu.

May I ask a last question? I've an old laptop sitting in a shelf with broken HDD and a battery that doesn't last more than a couple of minutes. I'm thinking of replacing them to use it for minor Uni stuff and movies, but it's processor (Celeron 900 2.2Ghz, 1mb cache) sucked and watching HD videos was a pain, so I would also like to upgrade it. I can't find the CPU's name in the OP list though. Is it ommited or I've just missed it?

Can someone possibly explain to me:

    1) The performance increase from Celeron M 575 to Core 2 Duo T5900?

    2) The performance increase from Celeron M 575 to Core 2 Duo T9300?

This is a GM965 laptop with socket P.

For things like Photoshop, Minecraft, video editing, web programming and Office.

Theoretically in CPU limited tasks it's about 2x going to the T5900, but it won't be much more going to the T9300. In reality you're probably not going to see anywhere near that since you may be I/O limited just as much as you are CPU limited.

Well, I know the T5900 is supported 100%. I'll be buying the T9300 on Monday to see if it works.

At the moment, Minecraft runs at 100% constant CPU usage with random lag spikes with high graphics. I'm hoping either one of those Core 2 Duos will at least remove the lagging enough so I can record it at a smooth frame rate.

    Dylan.

    EDIT:

Also, can anyone make any sense of the microcode in my BIOS? Here is a PDF extract of my laptop's 'latest' and 'up-to-date' version.

Because someone else got the T9300 at the last moment, I decided to buy a cheap Celeron 925 just to see if Penryns were supported. This idea is probably better in the first place.

I'm happy to say it was successful. Not only are temperatures better but performance has increased slightly from a 575. This is with the GM965 chipset. A C2D T5900 will be arriving soon; this was just to test for a possible future upgrade to a T9300, which looks more doable now than before.

Oddly, I don't see any support for Penryns in my BIOS (linked above).

The T5900 upgrade was successful, though I'm now back into Merom territory, albeit, not for long.

As soon as I can get my hands on a Penryn T9300, I'll try it. Definitely. From looking at the BIOS and checking the CPUID of the Celeron 925, I can work out the following:

067A is the CPUID for the Celeron 925
(CPU World says it's 1067A, but my BIOS doesn't list the '1')

0676 is the CPUID for the Core 2 Duo T9300, T9500 and X9000
(+ any other Penryn processor; once again, my BIOS doesn't list the '1')

The fact that the ones weren't listed in my BIOS made this a little harder to work out, but eventually, it makes sense.

    Dylan.

    Hello everyone,

First of all, thank you to Commander Wolf for making such an amazing and informative post. You have helped many, and thank you for that!

I have been wanting to upgrade my processor since a year ago or even more than that. I bought my laptop on Jan 2010.

    My laptop:

    HP DV6-1362 nr

I have been stopped from many people to upgrade due to many reasons. These reasons include compatibility, monetary (high end costs a lot), no performance difference, heating, and more recently bios support.

    I have:

    Penryn Socket P (478) 45nm
    PM45 chipset
    Intel core 2 duo T6600
    Graphic card: ATI HD 4650

My laptop gets heated quickly especially if playing something, so every 3-6 months, I apply artic mx-4 thermal paste to my laptop, which helps hugely or so I think.

    Temperature (IDLE):
    Temp 1: 55 *C (Speed Fan application)
    Core 0: 50 *C
    Core 1: 50 *C

    Core temp application shows (IDLE):
Core 0: 55 *C (it shows penryn-3M for some reason, though it should be 2M right?)
    Core 1: 55 *C

If I play games, the temperature would go as high as 70-72 *C, It went to 80 or something once and automatically restarted so I applied thermal paste and this problem went away.

I am sorry for going to this much details, but I did so I could ask if my laptop would overheat or if it will support the new processor.

My bios currently f.36 (which was updated on 2009, even though I bought a brand new laptop on 2010).
Today I found an update (I have never search for a bios update before), F.46 (they updated as of 9/2011) - and I planned to update it today.

I want to update my processor to T9600 because for me this is the best for value. I checked on mobile processor benchmark and it looks like this is definitely better than my one. I can buy this one right now for $70 , and other sellers are selling it for more ($90).

I check for other processor, these are the price available to me as follows:
    P9700: $200
    T9900: $150
    T9500: $110
    T9550: $45-50
    T9400: $40

The last processor I just checked while typing and looking at the list provided by commander wolf.

My question is first of all, will T9600, 9550 support my laptop. I have never heard of T9550 before, and the fact it being cheaper than T9500, at least to me, and is affordable for me.

Unfortunately , I won't be able to return it. So if my laptop supports it (included the bios after I update it f.46), what would be the more sensible purchase. I can't afford anything more than $70, so if T9600 is worth the difference from T9550 in terms of performance, I will gladly buy it. If there is not much difference, only a slight difference, then I would love to save the $25 by buying T9550, and it is less risky as well.

Will my computer heat up more? Will it make a difference in performance in terms of playing games, because due to my processor, I can't even play for instance fifa 13 on low settings (I know my graphic supports till medium setting on i3-i5 first generation processors)

Please help, whoever can! Your help would be extremely appreciated!

    Thank you,

    Suhail

All of the CPUs you listed should work. The nominal TDPs are all the same, so you shouldn't see much difference in temps.

Whatever you do don't get the T9500 as you're paying a huge legacy tax for an 800MHz FSB part. I assume you're not in the US as T9600 prices are currently running about $40 on US eBay, in which case I think it would be the best value. As it stands, T9400 is probably your best value; it's 90% of a T9600 at almost half the price.

That being said, if you're having issues with gaming, I would look at your GPU, not your CPU...

Thank you for your quick response Commander Wolf. I appreciate it highly.

You are right, I am in Thailand. I was actually thinking to buy it from eBay, and these are the prices that are available to me from eBay (not all seller's ship outside US).

How about T9550? It only costs $5 more than T9400?

My GPU is very old true, but if I upgrade my processor, will it not make a difference? Because, my main reason for changing the processor is due to this. I know it will not make huge difference, but a good enough difference will be great for me. I checked elsewhere, Intel HD 4000 integrated graphic with i5 processor supports games that my computer won't (low FPS), and my graphic card is better than intel hd 4000 or so the website says ( I checked it at notebookcheck.net), so I thought maybe it is due to the processor. If not, I mean what is the main purpose or reason for processor upgrade?

My main worry is with the BIOS. Is there anyway to confirm if my BIOS will support it? because going to this thread, I only found one guy on similar machine that tried upgrading, but not exactly to the one I want, and not exactly same machine.

If I can get T9600 for $40, I definitely would, but I guess I would have to pay about $20 for shipping, so if it is costs me $60- Is it worth it?

Commander Wolf- I really appreciate you helping me. Once this is sorted, I will definitely let you know, if changing the processor was successful. You are helpful to many, and this is the only thread I found on the internet that have this much info. Just to let you know, how appreciated this is.

    Thank you!

There's really no way to confirm if the BIOS supports anything unless the machine originally shipped with said CPUs or someone has done it before. I don't think it'll be an issue assuming you actually have a full 45-Series chipset.

With regards to the T9550: you are paying a 12% premium for 5% more clockspeed.

At $60 for the T9600, you are paying a 50% premium for 10% more clockspeed.

Your call if it's worth it, but I don't think it is. I don't game, so I can't really tell you if your games are CPU or GPU limited. I don't think they would be with T6600 and HD4650, but it looks like you have done your research so maybe they are.

Again, Thank you for your quick response.

I see. This is what I hope as well. Maybe updating the Bios will help, I still haven't updated, but I am not even sure if it is necessary.

The T9400 will costs now around the same price as T9550, cause the cheaper one I saw, was in bad condition.
I am also trying to get T9600 for cheap, If I can find one locally. I may have to go to a local shop and check for myself. But I believe if I can get one for $50, its worth it,

Yes, from what I read, the T6600, doesn't generate enough power for some games. Games come with minimum, recommended, and now even optimal requirements.
In some games, the minimum requirement is met for my GPU easily, but they require 2.4ghz or 2.6ghz, and mine is only 2.2ghz. I also copy a lot of stuff from my laptop to external hard-disk or so, and I hope changing processor will speed up things like that.

    Thank you for your help!

    Hi,

Just wanted to ask one thing. Is updating my Bios any risk? Is it necessary or recommended?

    Thank you

Updating BIOS/FIRMWARE is always a risk. But the potential rewards far outweigh them imo.

I don't know if it is necessary in your specific situation - but it is always a good idea to have the latest BIOS installed (using the old hardware) before swapping out for new hardware or O/S's...

    Good luck.
