I seem to recall that people have successfully upgraded a Celeron cpu to a core2duo ... or at least duo core.
And here is a 'how to' instructions for your laptop:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=251959

With all due respect to a friend of yours who claims it's impossible to upgrade a Notebook processor, he doesn't know what he's talking about.

Unless a manufacturer specifically makes the model of a notebook impossible to upgrade (which is rare, but not unheard of), CPU, HDD and RAM are usually upgrade-able (plus if you have a DVD drive, you can swap it out and replace it with a HDD that's in a casing with a correct interface or a Blu-ray) ... and in some cases, gpu's (provided they are discreet ones, aren't soldered to the motherboard and are on an MXM (I, II, III, IV) type slot ... and even then it's not 100% sure the upgrade will work - but usually, for those who informed themselves on the subject matter extensively, it works).

As I said, check the link I posted, and inform yourself properly.
    After that, it's your decision.
    :)

    hi

    I read a lot of good things on this website ... I know that my Socket it`s P . processor for that socket are : T7300 T7500 T7700 T7800 and many other`s
but the socket name confuse me ...

    bye

P.S it`s a big difference between dual core , core duo and core 2 duo ?

    Socket name confuses you?
Lol ... I wouldn't worry too much about it.

T8100 or T8300 will work for sure as would T7300 and T7500 ... not sure about T7700 and T7800 (although there's no reason for those not to work).

And of course, you will have to upgrade the BIOS for this most likely (as I said, read the link I posted in detail to get the needed info).

I looked over the CPU guide, which is excellent, but I still have to ask: will I be able to replace an M 410 Celeron with a T5200 in a travelmate 2441, the chipset xpress 200M I'm planning to buy?

    Hi

The Intel Chipset Identification Utility my Acer it`s a Intel GM965 chipset but with CPU Z it`s GL960 ...what it`s the difference between this 2 chipset or are the same Chipset but with the different name ? Or what the bencmark it`s true?
I`m sure that motherboard it`s Acadia

I don`t what to do ...to upgrade to the same speed ...now my Celeron it`s at 2 Ghz or to down the speed for temperature or better batery life.
The temperature will be the same with core2duo 2Ghz ? or will be more hot ? because I supose that core2duo need more voltage than a Celeron .
and if I chose a Cpu on FSB 800 I need to change my memory PC2 5300 or the motherboard will work with FSB processor at 800 and with the memory to 333 mhz ?

CpuZ tell me that memory max.bandwidth it`s 333 mhz

    bye

Just wanted to take a sec & say thanks for your help. I ended up getting the T9300 from a UK seller on Ebay (for less than $250). I got it today. I wish I could install it today, but I'm stuck at work doing 16 hours today & my laptop is at home.
    Oh well...
Any good Gateway laptop cpu installation guides you (or anyone else) can point me in the direction of? I did a few google searches but did not find anything relevant. I've changed several desktop CPU's before, but this will be my first laptop I'm doing.

The DV6000 is a Socket M machine with an Nvidia chipset. I'm not 100% sure on the compatibility of these chipsets, but you can find other DV6000 with the T7200, so I'm pretty sure it'll work, given the proper BIOS and all.

    Hello all,

I am a newbie and I need some help. I have just built my fisrt two Desk tops from scratch, one from used parts and one completely from new. I did my research on both and found info easily, but the next project is harder to find direct info in bold terms so that a dumby like me can figure it out.

My problem is with chip styles. In particular the mobile PPGA478 style. I need to find out if the chip will work with my project.

    Project is this:

Take old laptop Mobile Pentium 4 HT 532 3.06Ghz 1MB 533 Mhz out. Replace laptop motherboard, and use one of these Micro ATX or Mini ITX boards to make small garage/shop computer.

    MicroATX

    http://www.abit.com.tw/page/en/motherboard/motherboard_detail.php?pMODEL_NAME=iL-90MV&fMTYPE=Mobile Socket

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138079

    Mini ITX

    http://www.liantec.com/product/emboard/ITX-6M45.htm

The MiniITX seems directly capatible with intel's website info:
    Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 532 supporting HT Technology (1M Cache, 3.06 GHz, 533 MHz FSB) uFCPGA, Tray PPGA478 E0 88 Watts SL7NA

I just want to find out if my chip will work in all of these boards or only a few, and which ones. Check over the links and info and PLEASE let me know your opinions on capatibilty issues.

    Thanks

    Cory

The link to the Abit board doesn't work.

EDIT: The Abit board is Socket M. It won't work either.

I'm pretty sure the Biostar is only for desktop processors.

And the LianTec is a Socket P with a GM45, which won't accept your processor either.

I don't think there are any desktop boards out there that'll take mobile Pentium 4s. There are Socket 479 boards for the Pentium M, and even Socket M and P boards, but nothing for mobile 478.

Even then, considering that you can get a faster Atom 330 board for about the same price as the Biostar board... I don't really think this project is worth the money.

I want to upgrade the cpu on my Dell 1525, found 2 very excellent threads here in the forum - the CPU Upgrade Guide, and the thread we're in of course - The Intel Mobile Processor Compatibility Guide.

I've followed both sets of instructions/guidlines but I'm getting what feels like conflicting information between Dell, CPU-Z and the guides as to which cpu I have, and what the max upgrade my mobo can handle is.

    Dell service tag reports this:
    Pentium 4 Prescott Dt, 3.2GHZ, 1Megb, 800fsb 1.86, 1MB, Core Merom, A1

    CPU-Z reports this:
    Name - Intel Celeron M 540
    Code name - Conroe-L
    Package - Socket 479 mPGA
    Technology - 65nm
    Specification - Intel (R) Celeron (R) CPU 540 @ 1.86GHZ

The Chipset is reported as Intel GM965 rev C0 by CPU-Z

If I follow the CPU Upgrade Guide, links show supported CPU are Core 2 DUO, 533/667/800 fsb... and shown both socket P and M but not 479...

Now in this thread, the Celeron M 540 is listed under Socket P, Core 2 Extreme, and Core 2 Duo as:
    Celeron M
    Merom-L
    Celeron M 540 1866 1024 533

The GM965 chipset is listed under Socket P, Core 2 Duo...

Needless to say I cannot figure out if I have a socket 479, Socket M or socket P (I sort of think P, but I couldn't swear because of that 479 that CPU-Z info) nor can I tell If I have a Pentium 4 or a Celeron M and/or which CPU's I could possibly upgrade to

I googled my motherboard/bios rev. like the CPU Upgrade Guide said to, but the combination returns no valid results.

Could someone with a clearer understanding please "upgrade my knowledge" as to which cpu & socket this board has and which cpu's I can consider?

The board number is Dell 0WP007, Dell bios Ver A17

The service tag info is wrong in more than one way; the most glaring being that the Pentium 4 hasn't been in laptops since years before the 1525 was released. I'm fairly certain you have the Celeron 540 and the GM965.

You should be able to use any Socket P processor with an FSB of 800MHz or less.

    Hi there!

I followed your words and it worked!
Although the CPU has 478 pins, it worked on a 479 pin socket! Flawlessly :)

With all this, I successfully swapped an AMD DV6000 board on a DV6169eu with an Intel one. With only board, CPU and cooler. No more VGA fail! :D

    Thank you and Best regards.

Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but I'm noob - is a Celeron M 540 to a core 2 duo T5450 an upgrade? Or is it a downgrade - because the Celeron is lower down on the list and has a higher clock speed?

    Core 2 Duo T5450 1667 2048 667
    Celeron M 540 1866 1024 533

The T5450 has better L2 and fsb so I'm thinking maybe it's better and could up performance when multiple apps are open?

If it is an upgrade, is the gain worth the swap if the cpu is free?

    Cheers

T5450 >>> Celeron 540. Maybe in some corner single-thread cases the Celeron will be faster due to the couple extra MHz, but almost always the T5450 will be faster. T5450 also has SpeedStep to help you conserve power.

For the record, processors on the list on the main page aren't arranged with any regard to performance levels. Generally processors near the bottom will be faster, just because they're newer, but it's only a wide trend for the entire page.

    Commander Wolf,

The information above is not entirely correct; as for the Pentium M and the i852GM chipset. I have an old Acer TravelMae 290e laptop. This laptop was shiped initially with a Celeron M 320. I upgraded it in mid 2008 to a Pentium M740, and used it with this CPU until about two weeks ago when I upgraded it to a Pentium M745. The Pentium M740 as you know is designed to run with 133Mhz FSB. In my Acer it was running with an FSB of 100Mhz (i.e. the M740 was running at 1.3Ghz instead of 1.73Ghz). In other words, Any Pentium M7x0 should work on a laptop with an intel i852 chipset but at a lower speed (i.e. with an FSB of 100 instead of 133Mhz - 400 instead 533).

Well, this is why I said "almost always". I too have been able to run 533MHz FSB Pentium Ms in 400MHz chipsets at the lower bus speed, but I'm not sure how widespread this phenomenon is. It could just be us two, it could be the vast majority of 400MHz chipsets; there just really isn't enough information to say (then again, I haven't really looked into it that much; I don't think there are people looking to run 533MHz FSB Pentium Ms at 400MHz FSB...).

Hence, I would rather assume that the 533MHz chips won't work in the 400MHz chipsets just to be safe, but your experience is valid as well.

Hard to say on this one... info on Google and HP's site seems to be 1) vague 2) contradictory. If all machines in the C700 series use the same chipset, you should have a 965, but HP might put the 960 in the lower-end models. Is is possible to crack open the machine and take a look at the markings on the chip itself?

hi I've read your guide but I have a question.

I have a acer aspire 5673 wmli with this Major chipset

sistem core logic: intel 945GM/ich7m or intel 945PM/ich7m
    (I have a dedicated video card so I've a 945pm....)

my cpu is KO and i need to replace it....
but the problem is that that laptop use Socket M (mPGA478MT)

so i remeber that M series with mpgaxxxMT is incompatible with normal mpgaxxxM

    can i use a SL9SH (Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile T5500)

Family Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile
    Processor number T5500
    Part number LF80537GF0282M
    BX80537T5500
    Processor markings LF80537 T5500
    1.66/2M/667
    Frequency (GHz) 1.667
Frequency in LFM mode (GHz) 1
    Bus speed (MHz) 667
    Clock multiplier 10
    Package type 478-pin micro-FCPGA
    Socket type Socket M

Well, I don't know where you got that info and the M and MT, and I honestly have no idea what those M and MT figures mean, but assuming your chipset data is correct, you should definitely be able to use a T5500.

    maybe a Intel Celeron M 530 LE80537NE0301M

    @ Commander Wolf

about the substitution of the cpu, ACER "tells me":

    Chipset

in a mail ACER tells me about a chipset 945 PM/GM

    Intel chipset identification utility tells
    Detected Chipset:
Mobile Intel(R) 945GM/GMS/940GML Express Chipsets or Intel(R) 945GT Express Chipset

    Chipset Components
    Memory Controller:
    82945GM/GMS/82940GML or 82945GT

    I/O Controller:
    Intel(R) 82801GBM I/O controller hub (ICH7M)

    Integrated Graphics:
    Not Detected or Disabled

    Everest tells
    northbrigde i945 pm

i think thath my chipset is 945pm, but i'm confused....

PS: my laptop is out of service now and i can't control. i need to open the "stramaledetto" PC to check (i use a italian world for ultracursed)

do you think that Intel® Core2 Duo MOBILE t5500 LF80537 1.66/2M/667 SL9SH can be ok with those specifications?

Acer's own documentation for the 5670 series says that it has a 945PM chipset. I would believe this figure, and subsequently believe that you can use the T5500.

    http://global-download.acer.com/GDF...tep3=Aspire 5670&OS=V10&LC=en&BC=Acer&SC=PA_6

These Radeon and GeForce chipsets are not very well documented, and I don't have a solid answer. If you search Google, you can find quite a few posts about the chipset running older C2Ds and Pentiums, but I would say like with the GL960, just because other machines with the chipset can use certain processors, doesn't always mean yours can as well.

That being said, I think you have a good chance with Socket M Pentium Dual-Cores, and probably a decent chance with older Socket M C2D as well.

The A135-S2386 PSAD6U-01D00D (same model family) shipped with a T2080. I don't know how much that helps, but it's the best I can come up with at the moment.

in the discussion about 32 or 64 bit I've found this division:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=115195

Yeah, you should be able to. 945 should take anything up through the T7600.

    @ Commander Wolf

Hi! I have a question to ask you.

    I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NR140e. Link ---> http://www.docs.sony.com/release/specs/VGNNR140ES_mksp.pdf
    On the document specs:
    Processor: Mobile Intel® Graphics Media
    Accelerator X3100
Video RAM: 251MB Total Available Graphics
    Memory
Chipset: Mobile Intel® GL960 Express Chipset
Interface: VGA Out with Smart Display Sensor

However, in the Device Manager of my windows Vista, it actually says that it is a Mobile Intel(R) PM965/GM965/GL960/GS965 Express Processor to DRAM Controller - 2A00

Knowing that the processor can be upgraded, can you give me advice on which processor to upgrade? I was thinking about a t7800 processor but not sure if it is compatible. :D

Please don't double post. This isn't customer service.

At any rate, I'd go with the PDF you provided indicating that your laptop has a GL960. Device Manager and/or CPUZ, etc, are often unreliable when it comes to this. If you want to be absolutely sure, you can crack open the laptop and take a look at the markings on the chipset itself.

That being said, GL960 compatibility has been covered many times; you're officially limited to Celerons and Pentium Dual-Cores, but many 667MHz FSB and 800MHz FSB Socket P Core 2s may work. Emphasis on may. Nothing other than the aforementioned Celerons and Pentium Dual-Cores are guaranteed to work.

Your best bet is probably a 667MHz FSB Merom-based C2D.

It is successfully installed and running on a T7500 processor without any problems! Before the rating on the Window Score Index was a 4.5; now it is a 4.9 . Thank you so much for your input. The chipset does support Merom 667MHz FSB or 800MHz FSB Socket P Core 2s.

Hi, my friend has ACER 4736z with GL40 Chipset.

He want to buy T8100 from me. Can the T8100 be installed on GL40 notebook? Anybody can confirm it works?

    Thanks.

my rule of thumb is GL40 is placed between 965 and 45 chipset.
so whatever 965 can handle, GL40 can handle it..

someone please correct me if I'm wrong :D

hmm,, even a GL960 can handle 800Mhz processors,
I dont see why Bios for GL40 cant handle them.. at least T9500 for max.

edit: nvm, just read the last 2 pages on above thread and users confirmed T8100, T9300 and T6500 works :)

I guess it is, it's not high. Mine is same thing. You can stress it and check the temps then with HWMonitor, you can check the max temps then.

I'd second that those are fairly normal temps... did the T2390 idle significantly cooler?

no, my t2390 temp is 55-60c idle

i thought the c2d t7250 runs cooler and there is a big difference in temp compare to t2390 that's why i have decided to upgrade my processor
