This may be off topic but I just wanted to show what's possible.
In my post from page 99 I tested all 3 of my machines. I updated the oldest one and this is what I had VS what Ive got now.

    AMD Duron 700MHz
    640Mb Ram DIMM, not DDR
    8Mb Graphis Card
    100Gb Hd
    250Watt PSU
This machine was much faster before switching from ME to 2000Pro
    Pi to 2M in 6min 10sec

    Same machine, re-configured a bit:

    AMD Athalon 1.2Ghz $21.50 Ebay
512Mb Ram, PC133, not even DDR... Removed (1)128MB PC100 card
Nvida 6600GT OC 128DDR3 $56 with rebate from Tiger Direct
    100Gb Hd
    700watt PSU $105 Tiger Direct
    Pi to 2M in 4min 10sec
Now a more livable machine for the time being. Asus MB and Core 2 Duo in this box's future.

I don`t think this program is fully compatible with dual core processors.

I only get 52% cpu usage when doing the 2M test and i get 1m 48s on AC.

1 minute 33 seconds with a couple things running in the background.
    Lenovo 3000 C200 core solo (celeron M) 1.66ghz with 2x512 ddr2 533. Win Xp HOME. 20 processes.
    Ditto on battery.

how embarrassing. My desktop dual core Opteron DAW. Which I consider my big iron computer with its dual raid arrays, dsp card, matrox workstation video and burly rackmount case. Well it only gets 1:45. Of course thats on an ancient Gigabyte Nforce 3 250GB motherboard. Hmm. Maybe its almost time to start cranking up the FSB ( I got ddr500 ram when I upgraded to 2gb last year). I should be able to get to at least 2.2ghz. Well in every other bnchmark it still trounces my Lenovo. In PCwiz it gets about 2500 vs 1400 for the Lenovo.

Hi I used the old SuperPI so am posting to this older thread.

Tested on Acer Travelmate 270. [email protected]. 1GB 80GB HD @5400 (I think). On AC power. Windows 2000 SP4.

    5min 37secs.

Just ordered an Acer Travelmate 6492 with Core 2 Duo @ 1.8 Ghz with 2 GB RAM, 160 GB HD. Was wondering what kind of speed improvement I'd get. Main computationally intensive application is GIS (geographical information system). Rest is pretty standard office applications.

If I can get times down to the 2 minute range for PI reported by others, I'd be very happy with the new machine.

You're in for quite a treat with the new Acer . . . your old 270 is ancient in technology terms.

Which processor did you get - the T7100? That should get around 1min 10secs or so, maybe less.

The best way to measure the performance of your new CPU is to use wPrime - see the new thread:

there is was probably some OS process that took up some resource that made the thing just slightly slower. maybe battery was 58.4 and ac was 58.6...

your processor doesn't slow down just because you are on the battery (unless you are sitting idle)

if you give it a task, it will perform that task as fast as it can- battery or not.

    Hi,
That's good news. I've been concerned with the small gain in posted processor speed to 1.8 GHz with the new laptop from the 1.4 Ghz with the current Pentium P4 processor. But from what I've read, these days processor speed isn't a good indicator of processing ability anymore, other factors come into play.

Yes, the new Acer TM6492 will have the T7100 processor. The TM6492s aren't available in Canada yet until August but I've pre-ordered one. It will have the T7100 processor (1.8 GHz, 2MB L2, 800 Mhz FSB I believe). I saw one review (in French) at http://www.laptopspirit.fr/test-de-lacer-travelmate-6492/ that mentioned theirs had a T7300 processor at 2 GHz and with 4MB L2 cache. I've inquired if the T7300 is available in the model.

But even getting the Super Pi to come in at 1 minute with the T7100 would be such an improvement. Imagine my GIS maps re-freshing in 1/5 the time. Wow.

    regards,
    -Tony

3 minutes, 0 seconds on a Pentium 4 @ 2.66 GHz. A bit lower than I expected; maybe I'll quit out of everything next time.

Not that I won't be happy if I don't get any improvement - that just means more of an increase later!
