NHC always reports a SMART error for my HDD.

How do I find out what the problem is so I can fix it!

Next do I shorten the life of my CPU if Dynamic switching to max performance? I mean that should be a no brainier duh but still want some backup on it.

I recommend to use a program like HDDlife to get a better idea of your HDD's total health.

    Hi,

I followed the guide (thanks!), dl'd rivaTuner and it says I have a core temp of 64degs. I have a vostro 1400 with 8400gs. What I don't understand is the offseting part. Are you saying that the temperature could be completely different to the quoted value and that it's only useful as a relative value? How are we meant to know if it's dangerously overheating then?

Edit: oddly, I got rid of my metallic fan system which I put under the notebook and its gone down to 59deg!

    Dave

64C degrees sounds right.... you do not need to offset.

On my other laptop, an HP Nx9420, it says that the temp is around 70 C on pretty much idle(except on battery) and HDD temps is 101 C .LOL.
Ok 2 questions :1) should I worry or should I offset?
2)I don't think hp did the heatsink that good on this x1600,the thing gets sometimes really really hot. CouldI apply Arctic Silver5 or some other paste on it to reduce temps?

yes you can open it up and clean out any and all fans and vents (with flashlight, Q-tips, and compressed air)...
...then re-apply thermal compound and re-secure the heatsink.

HDD temp should never go past 65C degrees.

Hi Gophn, thanks for this detailed guide =)

My GPU temp is showing like "GPU : 78C" when I am gaming. Is it possible to shorten it to 78C like the examples shown by you? And could I change the color of the font? I am running Rivatuner 2.06.

    Thanks!

yeah you can change the color if you want:
    - right-click on the RivaTuner Statistics Server icon in the tray
    -- choose Setup
    - Then you can change the font color of the OSD there.

Alright, I'm working on an NP2090, Vista 64-bit, 8600m GT, latest drivers, the whole shebang. Rivatuner installs fine, but when I go to open it, it first says that it cannot load the Rivatuner64.sys driver, and tells me to make sure it's in the folder with Rivatuner, and it's there, and then it tells me that I have to turn driver signing enforcement off, and I can't seem to find it. Any and all help would be appreciated.

Turn off Digital Driver Signing Check in Vista:

    1. Create a shortcut on the desktop to cmd.exe

    2. Right-click on the shortcut and select Run as administrator

    3. When the command window opens, type or paste the following and press ENTER:

    bcdedit.exe /set nointegritychecks ON
    bcdedit.exe /set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS

    4. Reboot

Note: Make sure you don't have any of the following updates installed

    KB932596
    KB938979
    KB938194

These all reinforce driver integrity checks. So uninstall them from the Add/Remove Programs section if they are there.

for the moment NHC does not work for Vista x64....

... I would recommend RMclock for Vista x64 users, its a very good program like NHC.

NOTE: Support for 64-bit Windows Vista is currently limited due to the kernel mode driver digital signature requirement of that OS (workarounds are necessary).
NOTE: You must have Administrative rights to install and run this utility.

Well, apparently, Riva Tuner doesn`t work for me. I have a sager 5791 and win vista x64, and the temps stay 0 C.
I refuse to believe my lappy is frozen :D

if its 0 degrees, then you have to exit the RivaTuner Statistics Server and start it up again.

or restart your PC (RivaTuner & Statistics Server should start up with windows if you set it to).

Done that, still showing 0 C. That is odd, I also tried different settings. Also, if I start the server once, and then exit, i can`t start it again.

Yea well, 1 day , 5 restarts and 4 re-installs, the same thing. My gpu is frozen :D

EDIT: This is really starting to piss me off.NHC driver does not load, error, Riva tuner doesn`t show, ntune doesn`t work since I don`t have an nvidia based motherboard, atitool doesn`t work either. What the hell, how can I monitor my GPU temps if the damn vista x64 doesn`t want me to?

its not a big issue... its Vista x64 that is locking RivaTuner down... you have to get around it by making Rivatuner by turning off Driver Signing and such.

RivaTuner works fine in Vista 32-bit and XP.

Let`s see what Crysis has to say about that...

Is this true? I've heard of asus working on some modular laptop video cards, but I doubt it's really taken off.
Personally, I have an asus a8jp (x1700). I was wanting the a8js (gf7700) but it was $500 more for the same computer, sans video card. I have taken a bunch of laptops apart to compare the cards, but could I actually just ebay a mobile 8600 and drop it in?

sorry, most Asus models (as well as other notebooks on the market) can NOT upgrade the videocards.

The Asus A8 series does not have upgradeable videocard modules.

Thibault has Clevo M570U, which can upgrade and swap videocard modules.

Figured I'd stuff my input in this awesome thread :p.

    Used RivaTuner 2.06

Got everything working like you said, but GPU temp was 0C. I went into the Core Temperature Setup and changed the data provider to "NVThermalDiode.dll:0" and it now works perfectly fine. GPU idle at 48C. *turns on fan by Fn+F2* I wonder how low it's going to get if I turn on the fan. Oh wow dropped to 45 already. Suhweet!

I wasn't worried about my GPU temps at all, but it's cool to have something that tells me the temp and framerate. I'll load up Team Fortress 2 some day and see how that works.

    Thanks Gophn!

Edit: I found that if I pressed the red spot icon, and if I close it, I can still see my GPU temps in the systray. I don't know if it's going to work with a game, but I'll test that out later. It's 3:30AM here :p.

-^^ [that was the button I pressed :p.]

    P.S.: 37C now, woo!

mobile ATI cards seem to have an issue with RivaTuner.

but in your case, I believe that the x1200 is an intergrated graphics card... which are not supported by RivaTuner.

Whenever I install RivaTuner and start it up for the first time, I get a message that RivaTuner hasn't been tested with your current video drivers. Is that why I'm not getting all the settings you're supposed to get with the customization tab? Also, I would have to downgrade to a driver on the nVidia or manufacture site to get it to work, right?

On mine, when you double click to load the program, once it is loaded, you "minimize" it and it goes in my tray and then loads on my screen like you see here:

Hey Jack, do those temperatures show up while playing games in full screen mode? I've tried Everest Ultimate edition with a temperature display much like that, but the temperatures only show up in windowed games.

Maximize it instead of minimizing it and it will open on your desktop, then there are several tabs with different settings to choose. When done, minimize it and it goes in the tray and in the corner, (or where ever you want it).

Alright, I got it to work but I still can't get that window to show in Call of Duty 4. If I play my other game, Live For Speed, I can get that graph to show as I usually play that in windowed mode. Ah well, I guess I can't monitor temperatures when playing Call of Duty 4.
