This came up on my Youtube feed:

I went through it once while working today, but can't recall 8-bits if there was actually any useful info. Need a new heat-sink (in my head) for current east coast weather.

Yep.....and it is expected to be power, thermally and performance castrated as well, with the usual hefty premium chroma price.

HW News - Tom Himself Responds to Tom’s HW, Amazon vs. PC Manufacturers
By Eric Hamilton & Steve Burke Published September 05, 2018 at 1:56 am
    https://www.gamersnexus.net/industr...st-responds-to-toms-hardware-pc-tariff-prices

"Tom’s Hardware Founder Replies to Controversy And GN Video

Tom’s Hardware founder Thomas Pabst, who left the site in 2007, recently posted a comment on the GamersNexus facebook page to address our Tom’s Hardware video. The response was made to our coverage of the “Just Buy It” article that was posted by Tom’s Hardware’s current Editor-in-Chief Avram Piltch, where, at one point, I jokingly asked, “Tom, what have you become? Look at yourself! I’m using Tom as an all-inclusive term for anyone who writes at Tom’s Hardware.”

Pabst took the question and ran with it, replying as follows:

“You asked ‘What happened, Tom? What has become of you?’ Well, there’s only one person who can answer that!

Tom has become a daddy of two boys and doesn’t have anything to do with Tom’s Hardware anymore.

    So far so good.

What does Tom think of the article you love so emphatically?

“Well, I’d say Tom would have been less kind than you have been with his assessment! It is ultimately ridiculous, it is indeed suicidal, and its conclusions are epically nonsensical.

There is value in being an early adopter? Aren’t we, who are impatiently into the latest tech, sorely aware of what we keep doing to ourselves when we purchase technology at high prices ‘ahead of the curve’? It’s maso-f***ing-chism!

We make ourselves paying beta testers, and wait for software (and often other hardware) that will hopefully bless our brand new tech with the meaning and usefulness they simply do not have by the time of our premature purchase!

There are no RTX games, but there is value in adopting Turing early, because current games *might* be faster than on our 1080ti SLI setup?

Yes, this is madness, and good old Tom is scratching his head no less than you are, Steve! There’s got to be value in masochism!”

"Continuing on from the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 expectations on Linux shared earlier this week, here's a list of ten reasons why Linux gamers might want to pass on these soon-to-launch graphics cards from NVIDIA.

The list are various reasons you may want to think twice on these graphics cards -- at least not for pre-ordering any of them right away.

Not all of them are specific to the Turing GPUs per se but also some NVIDIA Linux infrastructure problems or general Linux gaming challenges, but here's the list for those curious.

And, yes, a list is coming out soon with reasons Linux users may want to consider the RTX 20 series -- well, mostly for developers / content creators it may make sense.

I like my freedom, privacy and security, hence, the open source drivers, hence no Nvidia.
For that matter, last month I bought a laptop with Intel + AMD GPU and a desktop graphics card with AMD GPU.
As long as Nvidia doesn't respect me as a customer, there could be 1000 reasons to consider them and I will still not give a **** about their products.
    They're dead to me."

Found A RTX 2080TI For MSRP - No One Is Buying RTX 2080's
    GearedInc
    Published on Sep 8, 2018
In browsing through my usual site Nowinstock.net I found a RTX 2080TI listed on Amazon, although it's not yet available it's the first RTX 2080TI I have seen listed anywhere for the actual MSRP of $999. Also I predict why no one is going to buy the RTX 2080.

Ask GN 100: Is NVIDIA Still Making Pascal? Is Ray-Tracing Actually Beneficial?
    Gamers Nexus
    Published on Sep 8, 2018
This Ask GN features a special guest -- Andrew of GN -- to talk about if ray-tracing is actually beneficial. We also talk about Pascal's lifespan.
    TIMESTAMPS:

    Google is Better Than You
02:15 - Bunch Berge: “@GamersNexus I enjoy AskGN because it contains answers to difficult questions AND questions that I didn't know I even wanted to ask. Sure, one COULD google this stuff, but that doesn't help when I don't know I even have a question.”

Are Pascal GPUs End of Life?
02:58 – Chrislybaer92: “#askgn-questions folwing up from a recent video: is pascal already end of life? I havent found any info on that. Seeing the price of a 2080ti, i think a 1080ti might be sufficient for my use. I still dont have the money currently, so i wonder if its wise to save up for buying a gpu next, or if 1080tis wont be available anymore in say 2 months”

Will RTX Change How You Review Cards?
07:38 - Fuddy Duddy: “#askgn-questions With Nvidia's RTX series focussing mostly on the new Tensor-driven technologies, will that mean reviewers will have to approach the reviews differently? I can understand that an apples-to-apples comparison would still be prudent (so rasterization only, no tensorfeatures). But if these tensorcores can unburden the cudacores with features like DLSS, and thus improve framerate versus, say, a 4xMSAA setup on a 'regular' GPU, would that be fair given the correct caveats at the start of the video.”

What Kills Components Faster: Current or Voltage?
11:30 - Middle Quark: “Hi, Steve! Great channel with great content! I have a kind of an odd question, but I hope you may help with some clarity. #AskGN Given that big power fluctuations are inevitable when running a specific application, which of this two situations is better for the longevity of a GPU specifically (or any other component, in general): (a) voltage fluctuation with stable amperage or (b) amperage fluctuation with stable voltage. Let’s also assume that the voltage, in both cases (even when fluctuating), does not reach dangerous values. From what I know, in electronics, the voltage is the most dangerous of variables. However, my concern is that a continuous fluctuation of electrons in a specific “weak” wire on PCB or inside GPU may cause more damage. Thank you!"

    Does Resolution Impact Power Consumption?
15:33 – Merkasaw: “How does resolution affect graphics card power usage (and by extension, boost clocks and temperatures)? I've noticed that every card I've got and previously owned sees higher power consumption and lower boost clocks as resolution is increased. My GTX 1060, for example, hits its default power limit at 1440p and doesn't at 1080p (we're talking unlocked frame rate here), and my GTX 1080 Ti also sees higher power usage and therefore slightly reduced clocks vs 1080p. I don't see this get talked about in reviews or comments very much. I'm interested to get some GN thoughts about this and why reviewers don't mention it.”

(ft. Special Guest) Is Ray-Tracing Actually Beneficial?
17:58 – Liquidpaper: “#askgn-questions @steve Burke Assuming that you could ray-trace render a game with no performance hit, what are the benefits of doing so relative to traditional rendering? I feel like no one (at least not Nvidia) has really explained why an end-user should care about ray-tracing, or at least why doing so is theoretically preferable over traditional rendering (performance hit notwithstanding).”

NVIDIA Reportedly Moves NDA Date for RTX Reviews to September 19th
    Techpowerup.com | Tuesday, September 11th 2018 17:42
Videocardz is reporting that NVIDIA has moved their NDA dates for reviews on their RTX 2080 graphics cards to be published. They cite difficulties for review websites in securing samples, delays in shipment, and even unavailable driver stacks that would allow for reviewers to conduct their jobs with the usual professionalism. Remember that the original NDA timeframe for reviews, as reported by Videocardz, was set at September 17th, which would leave reviewers from today with less than a full week to conduct their testing.

The website reports that "only a handful" of reviewers have gotten their cards already, and that reviews for NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 2080 have now lined up with the NDA set for the RTX 2080 Ti, on September 19th, leaving reviewers with two huge card launches and a single deadline, just before the cards' general availability on September 20th.

Arghh, the 19th hey, I thought it was gonna be the 14th, oh well 5 days extra to wait to see the official verdicts on these new cards! I know it says there in your quote that it was supposedly initially the 17th, but I thought I saw somewhere it was gonna be the 14th - doesn't matter though, 19th it is then, next Wednesday (1 week effectively)!

Well I hope its still only for the I Can't Believe It's Not Integrated / Can It Run Desktop low end, and not creeping into the midrange and notebooks. But the lack of a "2060" release time frame, and the rumours of GTX branding especially 11x0 for laptops, and persistent rumours of Pascal overstock due to a misjudgement of crypto mining demand, are not encouraging.

NVIDIA DLSS Provides ‘Huge’ Performance Boost at 4K in Dauntless; Developer Talks About 1.0 and Console Release
By Alessio Palumbo, 11 hours ago
    https://wccftech.com/nvidia-dlss-huge-boost-4k-dauntless/

" Does it improve image quality compared to TAA? What kind of performance improvements have you seen after enabling it?

We’ve seen a huge lift in performance on 4K displays. We’re still working on it and uncovering the performance lifts, but the initial testing has been very promising."

Not rendering at 4k, " a huge lift in performance on 4K displays..."

I wonder if Nvidia has that as part of their NDA for developers, don't talk about how DLSS is rendering at a lower resolution to gain FPS, then trimming the cruft with AI fed with "real" 4k images... or is the AI source material also less than 4k? Either way, don't mention upscaling from lower resolution rendering to improve FPS.

So, that's a software cheat, not real hardware improvement.

Also, I haven't seen any mention of Nvidia providing access to the Tensor cores on the consumer cards with the commercial AI - Deep Learning API / Tools, only the AI Visualization tools:

    NVIDIA RTX™ platform
    https://developer.nvidia.com/rtx
    https://developer.nvidia.com/rtx/ngx

"The NVIDIA NGX SDK is a new deep learning powered technology stack bringing AI-based features that accelerate and enhance graphics, photos imaging and video processing directly into applications. NVIDIA NGX features utilize Tensor Cores to maximize the efficiency of their operation, and require an RTX-capable GPU. NGX makes it easy for developers to integrate AI features into their application with pre-trained networks."

If the Tensor cores are dedicated to Nvidia graphics hand waving, it won't be useful to AI enthusiasts that were counting on the presence of the Tensor Cores as indication of full support:

Home => Deep Learning => Deep Learning Software

    Deep Learning Frameworks
    https://developer.nvidia.com/deep-learning-software

You'd think Nvidia would want to provide access to all of the features baked into the new RTX cards, and with Tensor cores being a selling point...but this is all that is listed on the developers page for RTX:

The RTX platform provides software APIs and SDKs running on advanced hardware to provide solutions capable accelerating and enhancing graphics, photos, imaging and video processing. These include:
    • Ray Tracing (OptiX, Microsoft DXR, Vulkan)
    • AI-Accelerated Features (NGX)
    • Rasterization (Advanced Shaders)
    • Simulation (CUDA 10, PhysX, Flex)
    • Asset Interchange Formats (USD, MDL)
But, none of this is listed by Nvidia as available on RTX GPU's:

    "Every AI Framework - Accelerated
Deep learning frameworks offer building blocks for designing, training and validating deep neural networks, through a high level programming interface. Every major deep learning framework such as Caffe2, Chainer, Microsoft Cognitive Toolkit, MxNet, PaddlePaddle, Pytorch and TensorFlow rely on Deep Learning SDK libraries to deliver high-performance multi-GPU accelerated training. As a framework user, it’s as simple as downloading a framework and instructing it to use GPUs for training. Learn more about deep learning frameworks and explore these examples to getting started quickly."
    https://developer.nvidia.com/deep-learning

Here's someone that thinks the new RTX cards will indeed be useful for Deep Learning applications:

NVIDIA RTX 2080 Ti set for Enabling Faster Deep Learning
    KUNAL JAIN, AUGUST 21, 2018
    https://www.analyticsvidhya.com/blog/2018/08/nvidia-rtx-2080-ti-faster-deep-learning/

    " Our take on this
We think NVIDIA is set to have a big hardware impact on Deep Learning. A 20% – 40% increase in hardware performance combined with the advancements happening in the algorithms should accelerate the Deep Learning innovations and have huge impact on real world applications in coming 6 – 12 months. We can’t wait to get our hands on this new beast."

So far I don't see any mention of the RTX GPU's supporting this:

    "Deep Learning Frameworks
Deep learning frameworks offer building blocks for designing, training and validating deep neural networks, through a high level programming interface. Widely used deep learning frameworks such as Caffe2, Cognitive toolkit, MXNet, PyTorch, TensorFlow and others rely on GPU-accelerated libraries such as cuDNN and NCCL to deliver high-performance multi-GPU accelerated training.

To learn more about these popular deep learning frameworks and to get started, visit the Deep Learning Frameworks page":
    https://developer.nvidia.com/deep-learning-frameworks

Maybe someone with a new RTX card can download the software and see if " it’s as simple as downloading a framework and instructing it to use (RTX) GPUs for training"...

New features of the NVIDIA Turing GPU architecture have been revealed and detailed by the folks over at Videocardz. The new details show how the Turing GPUs are a huge departure from current GeForce graphics cards based on the Pascal GPU architecture and the techniques NVIDIA is using to deliver the best performance to end users and gamers.

What I mean to say is that the RTX 2080 Ti isn’t based on the full TU102 GPU, the RTX 2080 is also not based on the full TU104 GPU while the RTX 2070 is the only card that utilizes the full config of the GPU its based upon, the Turing TU106.

One more thing, these GPUs are really huge in terms of die size compared to the Pascal GPU, while using the 12nm process. The reason being the added INT32 execution units and Tensor cores which weren’t available on any previous consumer based GeForce graphics cards. Hence, the TU106 GPU which succeeds the GP106 GPU is over twice as large as its predecessor (445mm2 versus 200mm2).

Here’s another thing, the GP106 was used in the GTX 1060 which is more of a mainstream graphics card. However, while the RTX 2070 rocks a TU106 GPU which may make it look like a mainstream GPU with a much higher price tag, it does have overall better specifications compared to the GP104 based GTX 1070 with higher cores, better memory, and more features. It also has around twice as many cores as the GTX 1060 so calling it a mainstream graphics card won’t be a wise choice.

NVIDIA changes GeForce RTX 2080 reviews date to September 19th
    Published: 11th Sep 2018, 07:05
    https://videocardz.com/newz/nvidia-changes-geforce-rtx-2080-reviews-date-to-september-19th

" Just last week we reported that the NDA for GeForce RTX 2080 reviews ends on September 17th. According to our sources, that is no longer true.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti on September 19th
Long story short, there is a problem. Most reviewers we spoke with are experiencing difficulties in securing their samples. Some are expecting them this week, some even today. However, that would essentially mean that they have less than a week for full, professional review to be made (if September 17th was to be considered).

NVIDIA has responded to this situation by pushing back NDA date to September 19th, the same day GeForce RTX 2080 Ti reviews will go live. That said, reviewers will publish their RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti reviews on the same day.

Only a handful of reviewers have the cards already. Those who do, still can’t even test them because no drivers were provided.

We will keep you updated should something change (again)."

I have the PG27UQ...strange how every other review between the two points to the superior panel OS and calibration of the ASUS? I only grabbed the one I have because I got a great price on it though, so I can't complain.

Every unit is a little different, and you can / will want to calibrate both on your own, it's just out of the box the unit he saw was better calibrated.

They are both great display's. :)

RTX 2080 seems to beat Titan Xp at stock. Seems more like 980 vs 780 Ti all over again, except with the added Ray Tracing and DLSS. DLSS actually looks to be the winner though IMO and with support will truly be a game changer. Thinking I'll keep my RTX 2080 Ti order now.

When it comes to NVIDIA I'd say lets wait and see. So far the RTX is pretty unimpressive, at least performancewise.

DLSS sounds great on paper and seems to work on the techdemo, but hairworks, physx etc. has been hyped as well, see what we got......

If the RTX are terrible at OC, there would be no reason to trade them for pascal atm.

FIRE STRIKE - GPU score 27000

    — APISAK (@TUM_APISAK) September 14, 2018
According to frequent leaker and Twitter user APISAK, the card's graphics score in Fire Strike score is 27,000. We don't have a collection of scores of our own to compare with, but based on other results in the 3DMark database, the Fire Strike graphics score is not as impressive—it's roughly in line with a GeForce GTX 1080 Ti.

Bear in mind that none of these figures are official. We'll save our full analysis for when we post our own scores, after the NDA lifts.

    If the results is true...
FIRE STRIKE - RTX 2080 GPU score around 27000 means about 25% higher FS graphics score vs. todays 1080 (N) mobile. A coming 1180 will show lower performance gains. Maybe below 20% increased performance vs. todays top dog Pascal laptop graphics. What a progress.

GeForce RTX 2080 3DMark Time Spy Extreme and Fire Strike scores leak [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]
    Guru3d.com on: 09/14/2018 05:57 PM | source: videocardz |
You know, I think it took less than an hour before Time Spy benchmarks leaked on the RTX 2080 after NVIDIA released a driver. Just wow, as that was even before I had a chance to download the driver myself.

The benchmarks have been posted in the UL ORB and contain fire strike and Tim Spy results done with the GeForce driver listed as 411.51. If you can believe the results, the GeForce RTX 2080 should match the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti when you look at the scores in Time Spy and Fire Strike which is a bit in line with expectancy I guess. Of course, you never know, and AIB product could (or not) be faster. Below a collage as meticulously collected by videocardz when posted by TUM APISAK on twitter.

    https://videocardz.com/77983/nvidia-geforce-rtx-2080-ti-and-rtx-2080-official-performance-unveiled

    Taken from the reddit calculations...
    • 2080 Ti is 45% faster vs 1080 Ti
    • 2080 is 15% faster vs 1080 Ti
    • 2080 Ti is 84% faster vs 1080
    • 2080 is 46% faster vs 1080
RTX 2080 is 46% faster than last gen 1080, and 15% faster than a GTX 1080 Ti. With the RTX 2080 Ti being 45% faster. I'd say it looks pretty damn good to me. This is 4K, SDR and not using DLSS or any other fancy tricks. Add DLSS into the mix and it's going to be quite the upset in favor of the RTX cards with their dedicated hardware.

Nvidia adds 9 more games to the DLSS adoption list
by Mark Tyson on 14 September 2018, 10:11
    https://hexus.net/tech/news/graphics/122162-nvidia-adds-9-games-dlss-adoption-list/

"As we await the launch of the Nvidia GeForce RTX graphics cards on 20th September (next Thursday) Nvidia is keeping us up to date with the games industry adoption of its associated technologies.

In a blog post a few hours ago Nvidia recapped on its GeForce RTX offerings. "They run up to twice as fast as previous-generation GPUs, add lifelike ray-traced graphics to supported titles, and boast numerous features that enhance games and improve your experience," crowed the green team. And it had news for us that developers have expanded the range of titles that will launch with DLSS, powered by the GPU's Tensor cores.
    • Darksiders III from Gunfire Games / THQ Nordic
    • Deliver Us The Moon: Fortuna from KeokeN Interactive
    • Fear The Wolves from Vostok Games / Focus Home Interactive
    • Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice from Ninja Theory
    • KINETIK from Hero Machine Studios
    • Outpost Zero from Symmetric Games / tinyBuild Games
    • Overkill's The Walking Dead from Overkill Software / Starbreeze Studios
    • SCUM from Gamepires / Devolver Digital
    • Stormdivers from Housemarque
With an extra nine titles declared, the total number of upcoming DLSS games in now claimed to be 25. Check out the new entrants list above, which have now had their logos merged into the full DLSS support graphic below."

It looks like the only upgrade from a 1080ti is the 2080ti, as the 2080 is only a little faster at stock...or a little slower with the 1080ti OC'd.

Sold my 1080 Ti less than 3 weeks before announcement in anticipation for $650 cash locally. I grabbed an EVGA XC 2080 for $749 shipped at newegg. So $99 for a faster card, RTX, and DLSS support. I also have 2080 Ti on order and will decide which one I "need" when I get them in hand.

Yeah, you can't really lose with that deal! You might want to save the money that you'd spend on the 2080ti for an upgrade from the RTX 2080 when the next gen after Turing is launched, that would be wiser, depending on if you just have to have the latest & greatest or not of course!
