I hoping by Black Friday they will be readily available. $350 would be good. The 2.5" can be had for about $370 now.
Shopblt has an ETA of 8/22/13 listed for one warehouse in TN. I've never shopped with them. I'm not sure they are trustworthy. They list it at $378 which is a good price. To good to be true?

Having a hard look into my data usage, I think I might instead go with a 256GB SSD instead of a 480GB. Going back to my question, I'm looking for a mSATA drive that while very fast, also consumes very little power to preserve battery life.

I'm thinking of getting the Crucial M4 256GB, Plextor M5M 256GB or Crucial M500 240GB. Write speeds don't matter as much to me as read speeds, reliability and power consumption. Would you guys still recommend the M5M over M4 in this regard? Thanks.

    It's finally available! M500 480GB mSATA.

Two listings at Provantage. The first has 480GM G(M)? but it has the right Crucial number with .PK01 added at the end CT480M500SSD3.PK01 I'm assuming a 1 pack  The second listing also has the right Crucial number CT480M500SSD3 without .PK01 at the end. The second is $9 more.

    Provantage showing 10 in stock

EDIT: After e-mail with Provantage first link dead. They said both were the same drive, as suspected. The price went down too

Second Provantage also showing 10 in stock
PROVANTAGE: Crucial Technology CT480M500SSD3 M500 480GB Msata SSD

interesting. Are the crucial mSATA drives as good as the plextor M5M? 500GB would be nice if the performance and endurance capacity is there.

I heard some of the crucial drives are asynchronous - while I don't really know what that means, it apparently means less performance.

There aren't any reviews yet for the M500 480GB mSATA that I am aware of. The specs are the same for the 2.5" 480GB SSD but, generally, mSATA will perform a little lower in the same model line.

Endurance should be higher 480GB M500 vs 256GB M5M. More NAND cells to write to over time, spreading the writes out and wear leveling inherent SSD controllers. They both use a Marvel controller. They both use synchronous MLC (multi-level cell) NAND. In current generation models, Crucial only has the M500 line and it uses synchronous NAND flash.

Performance wise, the 240GB M500 mSATA will not be close to the 256GB M5M and it's even more expensive than the M5M. The only performance in the M500 line is seen at the 480GB and the 960GB sizes for the 2.5" SSD. So, the 2.5" and mSATA 120GB and 240GB models should be avoided. Hopefully, the 480GB mSATA will perform like/close to it's big brother. If that's the case, it will be the best mSATA drive.

Yes, asynchronous NAND = less performance than synchronous NAND.

Hmmm, I might just wait and see. If the performance is like the m500 then I'll splurge. Having a large mSATA drive would be pretty great.

    You're welcome.
I understand. I had two in my cart but didn't pull the trigger yet. I would like to see a couple reviews then buy. Even if it's a little less than it's big brother it should still be very good.

Hi just installed a 240GB Crucial M500 mSATA SSD in my HP DV6 7145 see thread in SSD section.

Lets see if it slows down after I've finished installing all the software. Currently boots in ca. 20s with 5s pause to choose drive to boot from.

Just wondering how long would a crucial M5 128GB last me with everyday web browsing / word applications, and heavy gaming on the weekends? I'd be doing the occasional internal dust cleaning once a month.

And in your guys opinion, which is more reliable Crucial M5 or Samsung 840?

    Dear Richie,

I have the exacte same SSD in my Lenovo Y500. Several programs like HDTune and CrystalDisk show temperature between 55-60 degrees celcsus(130-140 fahrenheit). Is this also the case with your SSD?

    Thanks in advance!

Anyone here have the 480gb m500? I was wondering how it compared to same seized mushkin atlas. The atlas is significantly more, and unless there is a drastic different in performance I'll probably be buying the m500.

    Be careful with Mushkin.

The V drives use asynchronous NAND flash while the DX use synchronous NAND flash

After the discussion in this thread I've lost enthusiasm for the M500 mSATA. If the power requirement (= heat generated) increases with capacity as observed by Toms Hardware for the 2.5" M500s then the 480GB mSATA could be subject to both heat and throttling. Perhaps Crucial are searching for a fix. It's now 6 months since the 480GB M500 mSATA was listed on Amazon UK.

In the US Amazon's having a sale on the 240GB and 960 GB models for $149 and $499 respectively. I think it's because they're price matching some other retailers like B&H and tigerdirect.

Any complaints from M500 users? Just wondering if anyone has had any issues come up. Like overheating or high temps, controller speed throttling, high idle energy consumption, etc.

None whatsoever. Been hammering away at my 960 GB drive since launch day, and it's been rock solid. I just did a format for a fresh install of OS X Mavericks, and it's still running like a champ. The only real downside is that performing a SATA secure erase is a bit complicated, though that's mostly due to the fact that I'm on a Mac. It simply takes a little while longer since I have to take the drive out of my system, put it in my USB/FireWire HDD dock, boot a gparted live CD, run a few terminal commands, then replace the drive in the Mac. The only reason it's kind of frustrating is that with my old OCZ Vertex 4, all I had to do was use their bootable USB toolbox.

Regarding performance and whatnot, the M500 is rock solid, which is all you could ask. With Amazon having dropped the price, there's no reason not to get one.

Sure. You could use a mSATA to 2.5" SATA adapter like this one.

what is the write endurance on the m500 960GB drive? Someone on SD was saying 72TB....that is super low, which makes me believe that is wrong. Also do you know what the 512GB 840 drive write endurance is? I was pissed i missed that Amazon deal....i get 6% off too. I was wanting to get two of them :/ Adama has a sale going to for these on Slick deals. I am tempted to hope on but i need to know the write endurance is first.

amazon and rakuten have the drives in stockl. I posted a deal about rakuten a few days ago. Not sure what country you are in but in US there are tons in stock. If you live in the US pay attention to amazon and slickdeals.net Set up an account on slickdeals.net and set up a notification and use camelcamelcamel.com to set a price watch on amazon/newegg for the price you want it at.

Hi all, today I have decided to buy and install SSD to my Acer 3820TG (i5 480m, AMD 6550m). I have bough M500 240GB version. Copied my previous HDD image and everything is working really good. In Poland this drive is very wide available :)

    My results: (SATA2 limit)

My 960GB runs about 50C, up to 55C when taxed for a bit. Worrisome for an HDD but not for SSD.

If you get a chance I'd recommend a clean install. That will ensure proper performance and seq reads should cap out the SATA II bus at about 300MB/sec.

It's just you. They aren't falling quickly enough! The 960GB was $599 at launch, not readily available for at least 6 months, then it hasn't been uncommon to get them for about $500. As soon as you can get a 1TB for < $250 then I'll think it's a pretty good bargain.

than that question will be...how many rewrites do you get -_- I have nearly completely stopped my secure wipes and i dont like.

23 gigs a day and i try not to write a lot of stuff....i think that is also going up...hibernation is killing me when i have 5-14GB of ram filled :/ Also when i start to learn how to do whonix and VM machines i think that might worsen it :/ Still researching that stuff at wilders

Don't worry about it. I did 200TB of writes to a 120GB TLC NAND drive and it still works fine, and it's supposed to have less than 1000 write/erase cycles.

NAND big guys have cut back production in order to help prevent the price freefall. I don't think it'll affect these high density Micron units however since there was never really an oversupply to begin with. I suspect main models affected are the 256gb and 480gb MLC SKUs.
