    According to Crucial:

    - Endurance: Total bytes written (TBW) – Up to 500 TB
    - MTTF: 1.2 million device hours

    Source:

    http://www.micron.com/~/media/Documents/Products/Data Sheet/SSD/m500_2_5_ssd.pdf

Note however, that the 500TB is a peak (see Table 8/9).

For "Client computing", which I guess is basically random reads and writes of normal use, it is 72 TB. In pure streaming, 500 TB.

72TB of writes is quite high for everyday use given that reads occur many many more times than writes.

I'm sure 72TB is absolute minimum. Even so, average user is ~ 20GB/day which is about 10 years of use. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Anyone have the 480gb msata version or could point me in the direction of a review on one? I'm looking to pick one up but can't seem to find any good information on them.

At amazon 480Gb $300, 240GB $150. I got the 240GB msata, do I need to be concerned about heat issues?

no but you might as well just get the 960GB since it is so cheap

Crucial M500 960GB SATA 2.5-Inch 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter/spacer) Internal Solid State Drive CT960M500SSD1 | Amazon price tracker / tracking, Amazon price history charts, Amazon price watches, Amazon price drop alerts | camelcamelcamel.com

put a price watch on it i bet it'll drop again in the next couple months below 450. Always buy to future proof and best bang for the buck. Never let me down when i follow that....though my cheapness sometimes makes me not follow it and than i regret it :/

I have the 240GB model on one of my notebooks. No heat issues, they run in the same temperature range with my other SSDs ( at the high 30C's ). A typical consumer workload.

Have the 960GB one here and runs pretty cool. Makes my old T410 like a new machine...

Just put a 960gb one in my laptop, used Macrium Reflect to image my Samsung 830 256gb. Only took 24 minutes and everything seems ok so far.

Read my review to see how the power consumption of the M500 mSATA compares with the Samsung 840 EVO mSATA. The EVO is the winner for those who want to maximise their battery time.

If you don't mind me asking, which firmware version were you using for the M500?

Crucial updated the M500's firmware and while the change-log doesn't mention power usage at all and espeically not idle power usage, it does mention 'Improvements in efficiency of background operations ' - I'm wondering if that's their way of saying it's been improved without wanting to admit that there were issues.

It came with MU03 which is the most recent I can find on the Crucial support site.

Bearing in mind that you will see discussion about throttling at 70C in the early part of this thread then it is probable that there have been improvements to the firmware, but these have not been enough to get close to the claimed idle power consumption.

Hi, I was wondering if you could so kindly conduct the power consumption test on the latest MU05 firmware? Apparently, performance with Link Power Management seems to have dropped so I wonder if there's something to do with power consumption? Thanks!

I have temporarily put the M500 mSATA into my Samsung NP900X4C so I could update the firmware and rerun my power test.

The result is that the idle power drain or temperature is no lower (in fact slightly higher) so I don't think the firmware update has made any major change in that respect. i should note that his is with Ivy Bridge and Windows 7. It's possible that behaviour with Haswell + Windows 8 would be better.

Thank you. It's strange because on Tweaktown and THG it seems that the Samsung is a worse power performer than the M500.

I just purchased a 240GB M500 today and battery life seems slightly lower than when on HDD previously (Samsung Spinpoint M8 1TB).

May I ask if you had DIPM+HIPM enabled and if Intel RST was installed? Apparently, when Intel RST is installed, the M500 will never enter Slumber mode but will always be stuck at Partial (I checked it out using the Intel Battery Analyser tool).

    Thank you once again :)

I would note that my specific interest in the power consumption was under light usage when running on battery. It is possible that the EVO uses more power under load although I didn't see temperatures on the EVO as high as on the M500 when running CrystalDiskMark.

I think Intel Rapid Storage was installed but haven't a clue about the status of DIPM+HIPM.

Toms Hardware has some useful power consumption data for both HDDs and SSDs. There is a good selection of 2.5" HDDs which use less than 0.5W when on idle but 2W - 4W when under full load. You can compare those with SSD idle (both the EVO and the M500 are at the low power end of that chart) and full load (a 1W to 6W power range with the M500 doing better than the EVO).

So you may be right and with the right tweaking of system settings the difference in idle power consumption is much smaller than I measured. The other finding is to try to avoid letting the SSD do more than necessary when running on battery.

I would guess that the higher power consumption under load on a ssd is moot because it should race to idle much quicker. Ssd's should outperform hdd's at least 3-5x faster. Could be wrong but seems logical.

My msata 240gb m500 heats quite badly, up to 65C after 30min of gaming and around 50C in idle. Should I be concerned?

Not as concerned as me (240 Gb edition)

I'm getting 64 C idle, 72 C while gaming. Tried both mSATA ports - the other one yields even higher temps. I guess I'll have to rely on backing up my data :D

    Computer: Clevo W230SS - I have a 500Gb Seagate drive in the 2,5" slot - it runs at 48 C idle and 56 C while active.

Perhaps the temp sensor is broken? Does it feel real hot? I mean 82C is 180F which is hot to the touch. Won't burn you but it would not be comfortable to hold your finger on it for any length of time.

Yeah, the W230SS has a mild flaw with the mSATA slot in the corner. Happens to be right on top of the PCH which operates at a moderate 65 degrees itself.

Those who are experiencing higher than normal m500 temperatures, might want to check out this thread m500 msata high temperatures 70C - Crucial Community
The workaround with HIPM and DIPM settings helped me to reduce temps of msata m500 by more than 20C! AFAIK it gives some performance penalty when it comes to raw read/write numbers, but I haven't noticed any slowdowns in real world. Applications still launch as fast as they used to.

I was looking to pick up a 240gb mSATA M500 for my NP7338/W230SS but these heat issues are scaring me. Should I spring for a 250gb Samsung 840 Evo or 256gb M550 instead?
