Are you saying that getting a laptop with HDMI input is the only way to go?

Pretty sure that's what he's saying, though the express card doesn't appear to have any input lag at all. Actions happen right on time just it's a regular tv

I'm saying what you want doesn't come as-is. Build your own, in which case you want an expresscard slot above all else, or wait for the market to catch up as it already plans for this feature eventually. Either way don't waste time considering usb for this.

Yeah, I think at the moment the best solution for "external" HDMI input is the express card solution. Must of people say the gadget works well enough to play, and not requires a NASA computer or anything weird.

seeing as you already have a M17x R1, you could try get a M17x R3 for HDMI input.

Yea your laptop has express card so it would work just fine. Also some people can't afford to get new laptops just yet, I recently got an M17x r1 and bought some 5870m's to crossfire in it. With the express card kit my total was $420 for a nice graphics overhaul and the hdmi input tool. Much less than the $1,000+ it would cost for an r3 or M18x. This is also a great way to keep your old laptop and enjoy it rather than being forced to buy new just for one feature

nice! so the product in the OP is the one i should get? is there something better for the money, or is that the best bang for the buck? i don't have any experience with this kind of stuff, so any help would be really great!

i would love to have a plug and play product where i can plug my ps3 into my laptop, and use the laptop as a screen. i'm not worried about recording, or any of that, so would there be any lag issues? i like to play COD, online with friends, so any lag input would be killer for FPS games.

I'll say is the only option available. Not the best, not the cheapest, the ONLY one. The usb 3.0 seems to be more buggy, plus not everyone's latop has a native USB 3.0 port +x58 based chipset.

The product is the hd80e, zero lag while playing games since that's how I play my 360 and ps3 games online. Works perfectly for my M17x r1 and even for a cheap media Gateway laptop there is no input lag. Mine I got off of ebay for $140 though most cost about $30 more

Anyone have a link to a store with this in stock that ships to the US? I checked the eBay page, but it seems to have been closed down :(

I would love to try this out with my PS3 and Vaio_F11 (remote play sucks for gameplay...)

Ok, so doing a lot of research into trying to play my xbox on my laptop and stumbled across this thread. That product looks very promising. My only problem is I'm not the most computer savvy person. Can anyone explain to me what exactly an express card is? And what port does an express card plug into (like whats it look like or anything so I can identify it)?

nvm, just identified my unidentified slot as a SD card slot. I assume there is no way to plug in the HD80e into my laptop then?

Hello Winnard, looks great !! :) I played the demo on my ps3, how does it work for just playing games NOT to capture ? and what software do you use?

I registered here because I am also very interested in this.
I was searching on google quite a while and foud this, The AVerTV Express HD DVR here is the link: AVerMedia MPD USA - PCTV tuner card - HDTV tuners - HD Capture - Live TV on iPad - HD Media Player - AVerTV Express HD DVR

this is also a expresscard but with component not HDMI, with this you can also use your laptop screen to play games in HD quality. Someone heard of this ?

Right now i am using the easycap dc60+ whith S-video and Amarectv sofware (its free, small, does not lag, you can resize the window any size you want witch looks very good and with no lag)

Doing all and converting via Express Card is useless it is firstly limited and secondly out-dated you will not get HDMI 1.4 thru it and other supports ..

Hello Winnard, good to hear the software can go fullscreen, saw the video (gran turismo is one of my favorites :D ) you could give amarectv a try, you can eq also watch it smaller then the desktop size without borders, see fps etc in the statusbar. in Euros it would cost me about 145 E shipping cost included, witch I find quite expensive....have to think how much better it is instead of my usb solution witch is very good for just playing games on a laptop.

@ galaxysii why is it useless ? most things use standard HDMI, do you think that hdmi 1.4 is not gonna work with this card ?

@ W1nnard, if you find out more stuff using this HD80e (since you have one :) please let us know, very interested to hear your experiences.

Think this is a good solution, you don't need any pvr box etc attached to your laptop, most of them lag when you use them for laptop gaming. With this card you just plug in the hdmi cable and have full HD with no lag.

There is close to no lag in this clip so that looks very good. I don't know the frame rate output of the Xbox, but does the fps stay the same on your laptop ? I mean can you see that in your software, maybe adjust that, and does that affect the processor load much ? (clr alt del) bottom statusbar

The HD80E is a 34 card, I have a 54/34 expresscard witch supports both sizes, but I wonder if it fits snug in my expresscard slot.

I see that many people have written about the lag or stuttering when recording.
I just got the HD80E card and I see stuttering on all 1080 recording and the 720 recordings; some are good; others still may have some lag
    I have windows 7 64 laptop 2.5 4GB memory with blu-ray player ATI Radeon 4200 Graphics
I have tried to the Honestech DVR 2.5 and another software but the lag on recording is still there. Also the Honestech only records in 4:3 ratio; which is no good
Has anyone come up with a solution to the lagging and stuttering on 1080 recording?

Recording is more intensive and you need a good processor for it. You have left out what kind of processor you have. On the qx9300 I had for running it I had no lag even without overclocking it, my hard drive was a seagate momentus 7200rpm drive

Gpu wont do anything for capture, its all cpu based as it has to transcode on the fly, if your recording hdd speed also comes into play.

Just so you know incase you were looking at your gpu as part of the equation.

Detroit sorry but there really isn't anything you can do for the 1080p recording lag, it takes a decent quadcore to get smooth recording. About the best you can do is close any unnecessary background tasks to free up as much cpu power as possible

Hello again, I've been doing some more searching about lag and fps and found a article on this forum explainig about the response time of a laptop screen and how many frames p second it can display :

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/gaming-software-graphics-cards/182998-screen-response-time-2.html

I didn't know that most laptop screens have (that)mutch slower response time then hdtv's and monitors. so when you see comparison between the hd80e on a laptop and a hdtv, the laptop is always a little bit slower because of that fact. (my conclusion is, if you see some lag it's the laptop's screen lagging)

    My question is,

I have a HP pavilion dv4000 series with 1.73 M proc. with 1280x800 60 hz max, so with the hd80e the best I can get is 720P ?

Would the max frame rate with a 60hz screen be 60 fps ?

Hope someone can explain that a bit more

I tried recording onto an external hard drive using eSata. there is still Lag there on 1080
I have 2 softwares. The Honestech DVR 2.5 will only record in 4:3; which is terrible since all the channels are in 16:9
The Umedia software can record in 16:9 and there are 2 choices of output, Transport Stream and Program Stream
the Program Stream is better; less lag than the TS but it is still there
I hope someone can suggest a solution to this. I really want to get this working
as for watching live tv; that is fine

yes my CPU usage gets in the 90's when I open Umedia Software and see the live video coming in; so that software is using up too much CPU. The Honestech Software uses up 55% but it only records in 4:3 so that is no good
I can't get Amarectv to work; can't see any picture
So I assume my processor is not powerful enough?
it is AMD Turion II Ultra Dual-Core M620 2.5GHz

@detroit, when you open amarectv, rightclick on the window, click on config, click on graph device, select your hd80e and select your audio and display setting then press apply and ok, you then should see the picture. There are some other setting you can fiddle around with too.

It works because a few post back winnard showed a link here with someone using amarec.

I think that your processor is not the problem, you could also try to reduce programs running in the background....

I got amarectv working and it records but I can't find where to set the video recording bit rate and also the audio rate
looks like this software uses up less CPU than the other 2 but I need to be able to set the bit rates
