Really? Is it that dangerous, I mean what could have happened?

BTW, after getting the data off the drive, I tried to boot it into windows again. It got past the bios splash screen, but then BSODs when loading windows.

sounds kind of dangerous to plug a sata drive when the machine is powered on.
But now when i think about it, eSata and sata have the same interface, and eSata can be hot plugged and unplugged, so i guess the same goes for sata..

As far as I am aware drives can be hot swapped - so couldn't see how it can be dangerous - except that you may loose data in the cached but anything that's on it is pretty much safe.

I was wondering if choosing the "Compress this drive to save space" is safe to do. I heard that defraging a SSD is a big no-no, so I wondering if this was alright to do or is it the same thing? MY SSD has trim, so is it even necessary?

    A picture for minimal confusion:

if you run SATA in AHCI mode then it will support hot plugging/unplugging.
SATA in legacy mode will most likely hang the system if you try to do a hot plug/unplug. (speaking from experience).

It's safe but it will make your system a lot slower. I recommend not using it.

I've just got a question for SSD knowledgables:

I'm probably going to be buying an HP Dm4t in the coming days. Right now it has a $350 off going.. hopefully it lasts till Saturday!

My question is, is this a good deal?

    Here's the specs:

    i5 430m (leaving stock)
    4gb ram
    ATI 5450
    High capacity 6-cell battery
    160gb SSD
    =========
    $994.99 + tax

The SSD upgrade is $320.. but it's necessary to have the coupon come into effect. Do you think the HP SSD is an Intel G2? I currently only use 90gb of storage on my 500gb HD, so 160gb is plenty for me.

I guess you didn't run it in SafeMode - where it'll be faster.

    But it looks right :)

A newer driver might give you a slightly better speed. - if you are not on Win7 - you may want to manually trim, but the difference is manual.

I've got a couple SSD questions and hopefully this is the right thread to post it in.

I want to purchase the Intel X-25 M 160GB SSD for my new Macbook Pro. I have never owned an SSD before and heard a lot of great things about them, especially the Intel ones. As there are pros and cons with everything out there some of the cons on SSDs worry me. The biggest one is they degrade in time. I predominantly use OS X but run Windows 7 via Apple's boot camp. Windows 7 has TRIM built in whereas OS X does not. So will the SSD be ok if I occasionally run in Windows 7 which will have access to TRIM?

Is it true the more you fill up an SSD and get closer to the capacity the slower they get even if brand new? If so any ways to over come this? Hopefully I posted this in the right thread instead of making a new one. Thanks to anyone for advice.

The same thing happens with regular hard drives, too. It's best to keep 15%-ish free.

I have no idea about your Win7/Mac question.

Appreciate it. I just wanted to know if you run Windows 7 natively on a Mac would the TRIM feature still work on the drive since Windows 7 has it built in?

Oh. I imagine the answer to that is yes but I have no idea how much help it would be only knowing the basics of how TRIM works.

Either way, the SSD you are looking at is fantastic. :D

Yes there are better results but it is truly hard to appreciate whether it is negligible without it being tested in safemode...

Thanks. I am considering trading to one of these drives as that is my hobby, trading hard drives. Well, now SSD drives :)

I have researched and found out that the 120GB version of each are the NEWER versions. And therefore ergo SHOULD have the most recent firmware.

Cannot wait to see a nice price drop on these drives. I have seen them from$ 314 to $498. Wild!

Windows Trim just runs when a file is deleted - but you can run the Intel Toolbox from Win7 which trims the whole drive.
On the other hand - you'd not need to do that regularly - it would be a few hundred GB before you need a trim - at least mine on Vista was fine after 500GB of writes.

As Les alluded to it - SafeMode - if you want the best results, try safemode.

After using the Sony discs to put the OS on my Vaio the speeds on the random bit were higher than they are now when using the OS normally - in SafeMode they are higher than both for me. (the actual paper spec)

My guess is that some software (most likely) is constantly accessing the disc and writing/reading little things.
So the results you get are pretty much normal for any computer - if you want the highest possible - use safemode - or even benchmark it outside an OS.
(As a secondary drive for example)

It takes a new windows installation, all the customizations available in this and a couple of other threads applied, a fast CPU and an even faster SSD.
    Simple right?

    Anyone here using 2 Intel G2 160GB in RAID0 ?

If so, would you mind posting benchs ?

Reason I'm asking is I'll get a new M17X (with 2 X new Sammys) and I'm thinking of selling those and put 2 Intel instead, but, I'd like to compare performance of both manufacturers in RAID0...

Don't just tell me Intel is faster, I know that; I want to see HOW MUCH it is/can be before I actually make the move, considering those SSD are not the cheaper drives on the market...

    Thanks in advance !

If I remember from Storage Review... or was it someone here?
On another drive, sequential speed increased linearly - while 4Ks improved only slightly, and they are really the important ones.

You might be better off just using one drive. - But try - it wasn't on Intel drives if I am not mistaken.

I do agree with all you said.

However, I'm just wondering how better, 2 X G2 160GB would be compare to this, which are my 2 sammys...

So, if ANYONE do use 2 X G2 Intel in RAID0, please and thanks !

Nevertheless, if no one here use this setup and if I ever go there, I'll post benchies for ya ;)
