    Dude....

Thank you very much but, read my first post, I ALREADY knew that :D

(but thanks for your input thought...)

Again, just wondering how would 2 Intel G2 160GB compare to those sammys, IN RAID0, overall, not only for the 4K's; I want to compare both in RAID0, just to gauge if it would worth the spending...

Detlev: A single G2 shall beat my 4K's for sure; NOW, talk to me about 2 Intel 160GB RAID0 sequential reads and writes, as well as 512's...

Don't get me wrong: I fully understand how 4K's are important; now, with my current rig, if I put windows in hibernation, it takes ± 4 ~ 6 seconds, and those are sequential writes, I 'd be curious to see how 2 Intel in RAID0 would do...

Again, I know that Intel's are La crème de la crème, you just don't remember me ;) , but I would simply like to see benchies of 2 Intel 160GB G2 drives B4 I make the move...

    Sorry for the link.

Yes, it's an old thread, however, the only one I've found so far, but still searching thought....

    Fernando there is using:

    2x160 Intel X245-M G2 SSD's as RAID0 running with the Intel RST RAID driver v9.5.0.1037 (OS: Win7 x64):

I have WIN Ult 64, my RAID Controller is the newest Intel RST v 9.6...

He used 9.5, and 9.6 is SUPPOSED to support TRIM in RAID, as long as you have ATAPI- 8 SSD's compliant; are the G2 ATAPI- 8 ?

Anyways, his results are like I said almost interesting...
    :)

Great review with some real world testing:

    Corsiar F100 100GB
    Corsair V128 128GB
    Crucial C300 256GB
    Kingston V-serie 30GB

    Seagate Barracuda XT 2TB
    WD Velociraptor 300GB
    WD Scorpio Black 320GB

Too bad Intel G2 is not included.

Yes, it would have been nice to see a G2 there.

    This is somewhat interesting too...
    OCN SSD Benchmarks

But this one is more interesting, especially comparing lines 1 and 3, Intel's RAID and not; interesting how the 4K writes get worst (just a bit thought) with RAID setup, from 53 to 38, and we don't know what cluster size has been used neither, still, this is way over my poor 12 with my sammys  , and this RAID setup is not even 2 X 160GB, it's 2 X 80GB...

    HDDERASE on Samsung SSD's?

I have been trying to run HDDERASE on the Samsung 1.8" SSD in my Dell E4200, with no luck. I did all the obvious things like setting the SATA mode to ATA, trying version 3.3 and 4.0, etc. The program would hang up like the jpeg here shows:

    Imageshack - hdderasehang.jpg

Any suggestions as to how to restore the Samsung SSD to original state? My write speeds have dropped to 22MB/s as reported by CrystalDiskMark, and the drive is notably slower. Samsung and Dell offers no firmware upgrade, or Trim support on this drive. TIA.

Googled this and someone said that we can use the hdparm command in a linux live boot disk, but not sure really if that works, and I have no experience at all with that command.

Phew... took me ages... and I was doing something else (so I lost time... then forgot - but waiting for benches is boring...)

All screenshots are here... only the ones that say so had trim run beforehand:

And these are the individual ones...

I hope the images are all rightly labelled - checked the first ones :)

    Interesting!
it's a little confusing since crystaldiskmark is always showing the same amount of disk usage.. took me a while to realize you just kept it open and that's why there's a window behind showing the real usage of the drive.

    Nice, thanks for the test!

What I did to get mine back to full speed:

Get Ubuntu onto a CD. Option #2 here.
Boot from that CD and then,

    Go here: https://ata.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/ATA_Secure_Erase

Follow the instructions TO THE LETTER.

My Samsung was "locked" on the first try. To get it unlocked, I had to disconnect my SSD and plug it back in. Don't worry, this isn't anything bad since Ubuntu is running off of the CD.

And people say DVD drives are useless. Pfft.

    ~Ibrahim~

P.S. I found another method, which may be simpler: http://partedmagic.com/

Burn that to a CD and boot from it. Look for Enhanced Secure Erase. Never tried this way, though, so try if you dare. :D

Good for you, but you probably have the 2.5" version of the Samsung drive. My E4200 has the 1.8" microSATA version, so not sure how I can disconnect the cable, since I need to remove the bottom cover to get to the drive. Anyways, I read those guides before, and the problem is that Dell has locked out the security-erase feature. I cannot set a password on the Samsung drive. I was still able to delete the partition using GParted-live, but just could not get the drive to accept a password so that I could issue the security-erase command.

All is not lost. After I deleted the partition and then recovered the image via Acronis, I am now getting about 85% of the original write speed back. It was down to only 30% of the original speed before I did the deletion and recovery.

Finally gathered up courage and did it :). Had to remove the microSATA connector after booting up with GParted-Live. Reconnected the cable to the SSD and was able to enter a password, and subsequently issue the security-erase command successfully. Now the drive is back to original performance. Pretty poor performance for SSD's, but much better than a couple of days ago. Thanks for the existence proof :).

    No worries.

Yeah, dude, I was freaking out, too. I had to remove the bottom panel, so now everything was exposed for this 15 seconds. I nearly put it on my lap until I realize that wouldn't be such a good idea.

    Glad it worked. :D

Talking about price going down, yesterday, Newegg.ca was selling the SSDSA2MH160G2R5 for $425, instant $25 rabate, I almost pulled the trigger because it was the lowest price I've seen...

Just checked this morning, same drive is now $410, $40 rebate, wondering if I should wait or plunge now...

Will the price still go down  or UP

It's here: Newegg.ca - Intel X25-M Mainstream SSDSA2MH160G2R5 2.5" 160GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

    Any thoughts ?

Looks like a good price for now but you can be sure to see some real price drops as soon as intel make their new line of ssd`s available to the market.Just before the new product hits the retail shelves you will see all the retailers slash their prices on the G2`s.However I don`t think you`ll see this happen for a while yet.I suspect any price drops you`re seeing now are a result of slow summer sales and nothing more.Still looks like a good price for now and worth considering if you don`t want to wait till Q4.If you can wait though I bet you`ll see some seriously discounted prices sometime before christmas,HO HO HO !

Is there a difference between the 7mm Intel and 9.5mm Intel SSDs? Do I need extra drive cage or bay if I buy the 7mm version?

If you get the retail version, it should come with an adapter to fit 9.5mm. Other than physically, they are identical.

BEWARE of Corsair Reactor Series and intel chipsets.

This is not confirmed but a couple of users with an R series drive report that sometimes the bios doesn't see the drive. So does my drive. I will RMA the drive to corsair so they can check the faulty drive and hopefully come with an solution.

It seems to only affect the users with intel chipsets.

BTW I'm not trying to make corsair look bad. I'm sure many owners of a R series drive are working with it without problems. But you wont hear those users. This is just a heads-up.

Newegg is selling the Dane-Elec 80GB SSD for $125 after rebate. It is a rebadged Intel gen1 MLC. Cheapest I have seen for that drive, but Intel's lack of Trim support will irritate any buyer, eventually.

That's pretty impressive. Afaik it's significantly faster than Intel G2/Vertex 2 and significantly cheaper.

Are there any downsides to the C300?

    Vertex 2 60gb for $279AUD
    Corsair F60 is $275AUD

From the shops I go to there aren't any Crucials.

Oh I live in Australia, and the Intel 80GB usually goes for $379AUD

Then it seems like a good deal.

I'd say go for it but keep in mind that it might be replaced in 1-2 months. If you don't want that don't buy it.

The Vertex 2 is significantly faster than the Intel. If you don't need the extra space it's the better SSD.

'Knowing' Intel it will probably be worth the wait. I'm expecting it will set new standards for performance.

In the unlikely case that Intel doesn't raise performance above Sandforce 1200 levels, at least it will set new standards for capacity per dollar.

Would it be something as significant as doubling the current GB to dollar ratio? So basically I would be able to buy a 160gb Intel in 1-2 months for the price of the 80gb now?

any advice would be much appreciated i just bought a Samsung 256gb ssd with F/W - VBM24D1Q it is the newer black ssd paid £300 which works out at £1.17 a gb

I have not installed or running windows off of it yet but i have mounted it in an external caddy and i formatted it but i don't see any options or tick boxes to activate trim? within the properties do i need to activate trim or is it automatically used with the right firmware,

I did notice my windows 7 did deactivate option to defrag the ssd drive which is good.
