Yep, I am excited! It might be here today! I am going to keep checking outside where they leave it. I have emails I could check, but I want to actually physically check for it a few times today :) If not, it will be Monday.

aha! that was what I usually did when I was waiting my package, I took out a chair and laptop, and sit in front of my door to wait Fedex or UPS. sometimes I was thinking about putting a security camera outside, so I could stay in room and watched the camera through my monitor

Cape, Been following the thread and hoping to upgrade to a 256 SSD myself here shortly. I am anticipating that all I will have to do is take SSD, install in empty bay, start Acronis True Image Home 2010 and transfer everything from my HD to SDD, then remove HD and bang, done. I am hoping thats how it goes. So I am hoping that it works as it says it does.

@ Evil Claw: when You get SSD just use it as a normal HDD (aligned partitions are normal for HDDs to), except defragmenting.

    And, of course, enjoy it!

@Tomy B: as he uses win7, he doesn't have to care about such stuff like defragging. win7 handles that.

I have always had good luck with Acronis, worked for years on cloned drives. A web cam to watch for the UPS truck, ronan_zj, now that is a great idea! Not looking good for me, was after 4:30 when I came home and no package. They have been know to come later, but now I am not holding my breath anymore. Still, gonna drive down the lane and check at the gate one more time soon.

I believe he can manually run disk defragmentation and there is no need to do that on SSD.

A little something came in the mail today :D I'm amazed how much lighter it feels compared to the notebook drives I've handled.

I have not installed that yet, but I plan to. Since none of my friends got back to me about plans tonight, I might have a free evening. Yeah, I'm not a geek or anything

The label of the drive says "FW 02G9." I assume that's the firmware #, but does anyone know what exactly that corresponds to? Like it's the 1 before Trim support was enabled?

You can check it by using Crystal Disk Info, and it will tell you if the firmware support trim or not.

Since there is a 1% chance of me having Windows 7 this weekend, I'm not too worried about Trim right now.

Yeah I had a weird gut feeling that the Trim firmware had an H in it.

Still didnt get around to do it because I'm searching for my M$ Office install disc...

    I'm sorry, Cape Consultant :(

hey, im going to be honest, I didnt read the whole 900+ pages or w/e in the old thread.

my question, is I received today, a notebook w/SSD. It's a samsung from dell, I was wondering, is there a tool for viewing firmware and model info, or do i have to physically look at the drive?

also, what tools util do you think would come in handy for me in general?

    Hi guys,

I'm going to buy a Acer Timeline 1810tz notebook and stick an SSD in there. I have just two questions:

    1. I presume any 2.5" SATA II SSD will be perfectly compatible if I swap it out in replacement of the included standard 250GB HDD?
    2. Any thoughts on the OCZ 60GB Core Series V2 2.5" MLC SSD? I just need something as fast as possible with minimum 60GB storage.

    Thanks!

The Core isn't just old, it won't be fast at all. Get a Intel, Indilinx, or Samsung based SSD, not a Jmicron one.

    Suggestion:
    1. Good customer support and product: OCZ
IMO, OCZ has the best customer support so far, you can get rapid response from OCZ forum, these tech guys do know the stuff. I suggest you try to avoid Corsair, and maybe G.Skill, you won't get anything from its official forum, and I believe their information is outdated. For G.Skill, there is no useful thing on its official forum.

    2. Reliable and good deal at this moment: Intel 80G/160G G2
Intel SSD is attractive, I am still debating if I should get a new intel 160G SSD coz I love its random write/read, its FAST FAST FAST. but I have lots of SSD around me now, intel 80G, samsung 256G, vertex 120G, corsair X256(flashed to beta 1848 firmware, so no warranty now).

    3. At least to get a Samsung controller SSD, such as OCZ summit with GC firmware, in my laptop, GC seems work better than TRIM.

Advice is: Good customer service always makes you happy and solve the problem.

hmmmm, dun know. from the website, it states The utility will then check the firmware revision of the SSD and judge whether your system requires a firmware update or not. If required, it will prompt you to run the appropriate firmware update program for your drive

The firmware listed in the update is the firmware that your drive will be flashed into, not the current firmware on your drive.

@ronan j: I don't have my computer with me at this moment, so it'll be at least until Thanksgiving before I can give the firmware update a try.

as long as he uses the system internal one, it should not do anything on the ssd. it should still stay enabled so, the day he replaces the ssd with a hdd, it's on..

that's how i learned the defrag works on win7, but i haven't tested in detail. i don't even care about that anymore :) the disks just work, that's what i payed them for :)

Question - I just upgraded to W7 Pro (woohoo!) so I've been updating drivers and whatnot. Is there a firmware update for the Samsung 64GB SSD that came OEM from Dell about a year and a half ago? I can't find any support links on their page.

EDIT: Also, is there a thread with SSD optimizations and tweaks for W7?

    Two questions:
1)Have you tried it using a Thinkpad or some other computer?
2)Read this from the note of the firmware update:

The solid state drive firmware update utility bootable CD does not support USB optical disc drives, PCMCIA/CardBUS optical disc drives, optical disc drives in a docking station bay, or any other drives other than the optical disc drive in the ThinkPad UltraBay. Other drives will not be updated correctly by this firmware update utility.

So, did you try the firmware using a thinkpad with a drive in ultrabay?

Agreed. Dave is off in regards to how the partition alignments work (sorry Dave  ).

Also, guys, we need reread the old SSD thread, because there are still a number of people in the last two months I believe complaining about W7 NOT turning off the scheduled defragging even if you have an SSD installed, be it the OS drive or not.

I think that Win 7 won't turn off defragmentation, it just won't run on SSD, but I like to know it's turned off so I do it manually.

Same with indexing, I don't use it so I turn it off too.

But didn't you order it very late on Wednesday evening (around 10:30PM PST/1:30AM EST Thursday)? If you order that late, expectations is it's going to ship the next day (Thursday). At that point, you need to UPS Next Day Air to get it on Friday. 2nd Day would make it Monday.

Basically the cut-off for same-day shipping is 3 PM PST if you're lucky and chose to pay the $2.99 or $3.99 to "Rush Order".

    Cheers,
    Kermee

Plus, it came from NJ! I thought it was coming from CA. So, even by GROUND it would have come Monday, and they were offering free 3 day. I think I paid 12 for 2 day, but then Cashback kicked in and gave me back 8 or 10. So, a wash, and I will have it right after, or possibly riught before, my dental surgery. I will mopst likely be home for the next day or 2 resting/working, so all will be good. So yeah, I did buy it a bit too late. Still, it should automatically roll back to a lesser shipping if it can not get there for ANY REASON in the time frame that was paid for. IMHO.

Nah... You have a good point. If it was shipped UPS Ground, I'd ping them once you receive it and get a refund on the 2nd Day Shipping charges.

Good luck on your dental surgery on Monday... Least you'll have a present to come home to hopefully after surgery! Keep us posted on your SSD "goodness"! =)
