Thank you!![]()
Like davepermen said, great addition to this thread.
Might need to use this method in the new year if Dell doesn't offer this firmware soon. Will report back if I do, of course.
Cheers!

Hey guys I just bought a new Intel X25-M Postville 34nm Gen2. I have a few question is the new ssd come with TRIM support and what program to use in order to optimize the ssd? Thanks
-
this version seems have noticeable improvement in ICH8(have to force it install as intel 5) than previous version.
-
Trim support may need a Firmware Upgrade from the Intel Website.
Trim will be carried out automatically in Windows 7, Vista will require the newly released toolbox from the Intel Website. -
I have an Nvidia chipset and didn't have any problems updating firmware to VBM19C1Q.
-

Huh! Performance improvements or compatibility? -
Patiently waiting until next fall and the release of the higher capacity, SATA 6, cheaper G3 drives, as my 80GB G2 just doesn't cut it from the storage space standpoint. Once I have that, I'll grandfather my old 80GB down to my parent's machine. For some reason, I felt the need to tell you guys this, and I have an unnaturally high amount of anticipation for when that point arrives.
-
Tiller you were almost right about the $50, it was ME! But it was ME that lent it to YOU back in '89

lol
I too think next fall is the time for my SSD jump into storage hyperspace, but I don't know about the 'patiently' part.
-

Cape! lol...
Weren't you the little kid that was beating everyone up for their lunch money? You told me to hang onto the $50 until things 'cooled off' remember?
-
Cool, that's one confirmation. -
performance on latency in applications gets a noticeable boost, though benchmark (best on max latency) mixed:9.5.0(left) vs 9.5.4
-
Here's my new benchmark results with TRIM enabled:

5150Joker,
Could you link to the old results for us? TIA.
vostro1400user,
Thank you! Did you actually notice these differences in a specific app? -
could you run winsat disk...
-
I forgot to take a snapshot of my latest results but they were approximately like this from what I remember last night:
Sequential Read : 210 MB/s
Sequential Write : 160 MB/s
Random Read 512KB : 163 MB/s
Random Write 512KB : 93 MB/s
Random Read 4KB (QD=1) : 14 MB/s
Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 9 MB/s
Random Read 4KB (QD=32) : 22 MB/s
Random Write 4KB (QD=32) : 6 MB/s
My 512KB writes started nosediving for some reason with the old firmware.
I've never run winsat before. Which switches should I use? -
just type 'winsat disk' on elevated command line.

5150Joker, those are good results and those are the best results that i have seen for a SSD with a Samsung controller. I own a Corsair P128 and a Dell/Samsung PBJJ-23 microsata drive. I cannot be bothered to update the firmware yet. I cannot wipe my drives clean at the moment. I don't have the time to do a clean install and my backups always go wrong lol.
My drives are fine though even after 6 months for my P128. -
Still no lucking flashing the Dell SSD. Found the old Sager laptop, it has TX378 SATA or something like that and flasher couldn't find the drive on ATA. Tried my wife's hp dv2700t laptop, flasher couldn't find the drive on ATA; no settings to adjust in BIOS. Tried my desktop again (EVGA 780i), no go on all six SATA ports with RAID off. Looks like it has nVidia SATA controller that bypasses ATA, with two SATA assinged to one channel and four SATA to the other (A0-1, B0-1, C0-1). Maybe some of the notebook nvidia chipsets have a more conventional arrangemment.
Not sure what I can do to flash this drive. I can't really start taking computers at work apart to try.
What would be great is if someone could figure a way to get the Lenovo flash utility to see the drive as an upgrade target. That flash utility has no trouble recognizing the drive (on AHCI) but they seemed to have locked out the ability to flash the Dell OEM drives, as have Corsair and OCZ.
I've wasted hours on this and am about to give up. -
found one seller is selling this:80GB Fusion-io ioXtreme SSD. $900 shipped. -
Looks like there's parts where my score drops bad, any suggestions?

Do you know anyone that has a spare desktop? Maybe you could take it to a local computer shop and have them flash it for you. -
i guess those lower than average might be related with driver issues. -
What kind of driver issue could it be? Everything is using Windows 7 stock drivers.
-
could you try intel driver 9.5.4? or if it's nvidia driver, then no options.
http://www.x-drivers.com/catalog/drivers/sata_controllers/companies/intel/models/ich10/14812.html -
Is that what you're using? -
yes, i updated to this version on both vostro 1400 and 1320 and works great.
-
Alright, so just go to the control panel and update the drivers manually right? Should I pick iaAHCI or iaStor? -
Just in case anyone missed it, Intel released a new version of their SSD ToolBox yesterday (I forgot).
Wanted to ask you guys for your opinion if I need to have this installed and run the SSD Optimizer as it advises... I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with Turbo Memory (and thus have the Turbo Memory Console/Matrix Storage Manager installed) on an X25-M 80GB G2. Also, is there any way that definitively indicates that TRIM is enabled? -
what's your disk control chip? if not from intel, you cannot use, if it's from intel, and not in the list, you can manually choose 'intel 5 4 port', it doesn't matter if you choose iaAHCI or iaStor.
-
Edit: removed, I got it installed. -
in that Have Disk window, uncheck "Show compatible device", then follow regular steps to locate those driver files, go to the folder you extracted files, for 64 bit system, choose 64 folder in the extracted subdirectory, for 32 bit system, choose that 32 folder, then select any inf file in that folder, then select 'Intel 5 Series 4 port SATA AHCI controller', click OK for all windows and reboot. that works in my case.
-
in your device manager, what's the name of device for SATA controller?
-
I updated the storage controller and SATA controller so they now look like this:
Do you think the ST Micro free fall sensor could be hurting my score somehow?
My random read is still doing poorly:
Code:> Running: Storage Assessment '-hybrid -ran -read -n 0 -ransize 16384' NV Cache not present. > Run Time 00:00:00.01 > Disk Sequential 64.0 Read 213.31 MB/s 7.4 > Disk Random 16.0 Read 70.72 MB/s 6.8 > Responsiveness: Average IO Rate 1.13 ms/IO 7.9 > Responsiveness: Grouped IOs 9.08 units 7.3 > Responsiveness: Long IOs 2.30 units 7.9 > Responsiveness: Overall 20.93 units 7.7 > Responsiveness: PenaltyFactor 0.0 > Disk Sequential 64.0 Write 160.05 MB/s 7.1 > Average Read Time with Sequential Writes 0.464 ms 7.9 > Latency: 95th Percentile 1.423 ms 7.9 > Latency: Maximum 11.030 ms 7.9 > Average Read Time with Random Writes 0.570 ms 7.9 > Total Run Time 00:01:12.57
-
i have no idea as i only have one netbook has this sensor but never benchmarks it. now your winsat seems much better especially in latency (many items better than mine).
-
What about the Random read? Any suggestions on improving that? -
you might have to wait a while to get this recovered, it takes five days in my case to get performance fully recovered after TRIM firmware update.
-
Really? I installed Windows 7 + applications today. -
you could ATTO your drive once a day from now on for a few days to check its improvement.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5646723&postcount=1898 -
Thanks I'll start with a benchmark tonight and after a few days I'll check again. Here's the first one, next one will come after 3-4 days:

shht don't show that, we want to like ours
-
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
only if you shake your laptop while testing. it should be zero, then.
i disabled it on my laptop as it's useless anyways. -
Fusion io FTW! I wonder if they have those at Micro Center ???
Because I happen to be gong to Micro Center today!
-

Fusion IO - does it boot yet?

Just want to mention that although the random reads are pretty low, hopefully the drive will 'come back' in a few days like vostro1400user says.
You are almost hitting the 7.9 'wall' on every parameter with your drive - must feel fast in use, yes?
Interested in seeing if the numbers do come up - btw, did I mention to you to try the Tony Trim method? And, have you tried it? -
Just three restore points - but 200,000 files!
-
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
woah.. i know why i don't use restore points
huge thing, that
-
I was using Tony Trim all this time but is it needed now that the drive supports it? -
interesting reading.
So am i right in thinking the samsungs arnt quite as good as intel and cruicials offerings?
this SSD market has become a bit of a minefield!!
currently looking at 160 gig intel vs 256gig crucial?
price being not a lot more for an extra 90 gig seems worth it to go for the cruicial, thoughts?
