I think I probably should ask this here. I never quite finished my whole project of reinstalling mission critical applications![]()
Love it or hate it, I use Office 2007. Bought an academic copy through my college of Office 2007 Professional Plus. I installed it on my Thinkpad and everything was hunky dory. Now I can't find my install DVD but I still have my activation key. I'm still using on the same computer just with my spiffy Intel G2. So what are my options?
Would it be possible for me to copy the install files directly off my Thinkpad's original hard drive onto my current SSD? Is that even kosher for Microsoft?
-
Download the 60-day trial here:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/suites/FX101674101033.aspx
activate it with your valid key. -
^^ or you could give Office 2010 Beta a try, I love it!

not yet, wait till the 27. or so, when the new apple stuff and the too-much-overhyped-and-nobody-knows-yet-what-it-could-be-good-for-iSlate-apple-tablet gets presented
... maybe.
because you don't have to download and install/unzip some benchmark if the os has one integrated. and it has interesting numbers, not just "boah my read speed is fast stutter stutter ocz core style"
actually, has one ran wei on the command line on an ocz core? i'd love to see it's numbers
indeed. but on the other hand, fixing the bottleneck normally is the biggest bang for the buck, which is why one should always target that. obviously, if the next one is just bordering (like in the case of the old athlon and the intel ssd for tiller), then the gains are minimal. but in most changes, fixing the bottleneck == huge gain. especially as the hdd can be a massive bottleneck
thanks DUUUUDE
^^
Love it, obviously. haters are just people that have a hard time learning new stuff, even while they're clearly there for enhancements.. ( check the office 2007 bible).
so do this:
or this (my favorite right now):
you can grab it here: office 2010 beta. lots of explanations on what they improved on the much praised changes of 2007 are found here: Office 2010 Blog -
Thanks. I'll give it a try. When I got the thinkpad I tried activating the Office trial on it and it didn't work. I'll see.
Office 2010? Not a bad idea
-
I have a license for Office 2007 Home & Student but I don't have physical media. I downloaded the trial and activated it with my key. Works no problem

LOL at this "review" on the newegg product page:

Hello,
I just recieved my replacement Samsung 256GB SSD from Dell. Instead of the nice brushed metal of my original, the replacement is black plastic.
Im currently installing Vista on it so I can install my Win7 upgrade.
But my question is, will the black plastic effect the performance or heating at all? Is there any disadvantage for having plastic over metal, afterall I spent alot of money on it. And has anyone else recieved theirs as black plastic?
Second, my original SSD was VBM15D1Q and my new one is VBM9LD1Q. Is this firmaware better? Anybody have experience with it?
Thanks so much!
-
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
just install win7, the upgrade disk will work for clean installations just as well, as documented on the web, and discussed on this forum.
i don't know about the firmware. i wouldn't bother about the plastic: it's IN your laptop, you won't ever see it again. it doesn't matter.
to tomy: i so would, if i could buy it..
-
Thanks!
Also Im still new to SSD's. Is it a good idea to have them compressed as well or no?
-
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
No! Don't compress them and don't fill them past 70% or so if you want to experience the performance you paid for.
Cheers! -
Me too!
-
Thanks so much for the info!
Im just wondering what the science is behind not compressing your SSD? It won't make it faster?
Thanks again
-
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Not recommended by MS themselves.

davepermen! Where are you?
I think I found your new notebook.
See:

Less than $2000 and can hold 4 SSD's - the 160GB G2's would cost more than the notebook, but what a rush this should be.
Cheers! -
Last question guys. Defrag on SSDs then, bad?
Thanks alot, really appreciated the help!
-
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Yes, bad!
Cheers! -
Defrag is either very bad or a complete waste of time. Either way, don't defrag the SSD
-
Hey guys,
I have the first generation x25-m and was wondering if it was wise to sell it and purchase the ocz vertex?
This drive will most likely be used in my laptop, so I would not want to format it on a regular basis. I have read the anandtech SSD review and it seems that even in its degraded state the G1 x25-m is still faster than the OCZ Vertex. However, the Vertex supports trim and seems to be the better long term solution.
So, is the trim feature worth it? Or just stick with the G1 x25-m?
Tuan -
get intel G2 rather than vertex.
-
I don't recommend the 'upgrade' to the vertex, if you price is right I may be interested in buying your G1.
-
Dave cannot stand Vaios...
-
Well....
Yes, a defrag increases the amounts of writes - but there may be situations where a defrag on a SSD might be beneficial for performance - ideally you'd do that on a case by case basis though.
Sheduled defrags are definitely bad - because they'll regularly write to the SSD, shuffle files around for very little gain. -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
lol...
Oops!!!
What situations would that be?
Cheers! -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Buying an OCZ Vertex is never a wise idea.
You will not gain anything (like you said, the G1 is faster than the Vertex) and you may possibly be asking for trouble (random Vertex failures have been reported).
I even doubt that upgrading is worthwhile to an Intel G2 to say the truth, simply to get TRIM support.
I suggest using the SSD as is until you get a new notebook and/or this one is effectively obsolete ('cause I don't think you'll wear it out anytime soon).
Cheers! -
I think he doesn't like Sony in general.
I really like my little SZ
Well, random 4K reads are much much slower than sequential read.
So if for whatever reason a file where fragmented very heavily into 4K fragments and you need the sequential read speed.
I never said you have to - but there will be specialized cases where you might want to defrag individual files. -
They use custom SSDs and special SATA cable. I doubt you can use 4 aftermarket SSDs there. 2 x 1.8" may be ok but 4 of them simply won't fit.
-
A special cable isn't enough - that was the old Z.
Its a special SSD.

I see that Newegg didn't keep the price of the X-25V at $114.99 for very long. They have raised it back to $129.99

That's why I was in a hurry! Link
Once more, thank You very much! -
It might be Samsung's slim SSDs format (smaller than 1.8"), like Dell Latitude Z.
-
Hey I'm looking for a recommendation for a ssd for my G71GX-RX05. I only have a price range of about $100, unless spending another 15 will make a HUGE difference. A 32gb should be enough since I'll still have my original 500gb hdd.
Patriot PS-100

I know these aren't supposed to be the fastest ever, but they should make a huge difference to the 5400rpm drive my laptop came with. -
You will not be having a happy SSD experience if you buy any of those drives. Get the 40gb Intel or the 60gb Agility. You could have bought the 40gb Intel @ Newegg yesterday for $114. Don't waste your money on either of those three you linked. If you can't afford the $30 extra for the Intel, wait till you can or else you are likely to be disappointed.
The 30gb Agility is $104 after MIB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227460 -
I'd try to get a 40GB Intel X25-V; which is mentioned above.
-
Alright thanks thats the kind of answers I was looking for. Not hoping, but looking. I'll just go with the intel then if it's that big a difference.
-
Installed Office 07 in 2 minutes 40 seconds.
I actually liked 2007, don't get me wrong. I know others didn't. Only problem I have with 2007 is Word (and only Word) takes almost as long as iTunes to start up. Oh wait... I used to have that problem
-
really word opens in like 1/2second on my 80GB intel G1... itunes like 10seconds
apple's weakness is there software. not there hardware.
-
I unzip files so fast on my SSD, it's not even funny. I have no time to check the news during 500MB extractions, no time at all.

tons of things, no time to reply.. but it looks like another hybrid hard drive approach will get implemented:
straight from engadget
i don't like. i don't like hybrid solutions..
(my next planned car is the tesla model s.. and all my lighting at home is done with leds. and i only want ssds in the future.. you get where i'm heading at: solid state all the way
)
-
Hybird solution is just a economic solution for ppl who cant pay $$ on an expensive SSD, but still want to have a SSD.
I dont like Lenovo RapidDrive, PCI-E SSD is stil expensive. imo, its a stupid marketing. -

i like hybird solutions
that typo for me defines what it's about.. hy bird
