Do current HDDs still get louder over time? My current drive (Seagate 7200.4 500GB) was really silent at the beginning, but now the hissing is louder than my CPU fan...

I haven't noticed that myself - I think you're just attuned to their sonic signature and pick it up more readily.
I actually use PerfectDisk to make them quieter (just one of the benefits...). -
I thought so myself, but when the drive was new I heard basically no hissing, but the typical read/write noises of the drive. Now this is overshadowed by the hissing
. How can a software make a HDD quieter?
-
^ Doesn't that indicate trouble? Everytime my drive gets that whirring sound, I get paranoid and do backups.
-
No, it's just the "normal" drive noise, just a little louder. It sounds basically like a fan and is completely consistent (I recently checked for bad sectors etc, everything is fine). But I prefer this sound very much to the clicking of drives such as the Hitachi Z5K320. Seriously, when I first heard that I thought the drive had it...but apparently that's normal.
So the Samsung has no clicking, rambling, hissing? Then that's going to be my next drive. -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
If you feel your drive is excessively noisy or vibrating, sometimes going to the latest firmware can help. Always and again I say ALWAYS back up your data or do an imaged backup before doing a firmware update. Doing it wrong or it getting messed up can brick your drive.

quietHDD (I think that's the name?) can make your drive quieter by decreasing the performance in favour of less noise (if the drive supports it).
PerfectDisk makes almost all drives quieter (overall) by defragging the file system and basically making each file require one seek (instead of 10's, 100's or 1000's in heavily fragmented systems). The difference is quite noticeable and many clients are surprised how quiet their systems can be. -
Isn't that what all defraggers do?
-
-Vibration is a mechanical problem caused by imbalance. -

Newegg is now selling them and are claiming that they are in stock for $93 shipped; nabbed one. A bit of a premium - nearly $20 more than the 750gb - but psychologically, it feels good to have your system maxed out, and price per GB is about the same as the 750gb. Gonna try installing it using the vinunero method (shaving the tabs).

I want to see the speed results, random speeds, etc... when in raid 0. That will be interesting too see. Finally there some progress with these drives and hopefully manufacters will make drive bays larger for the next generation of 12.5 1.5-2TB drives.
-

I'd be surprised if these were meant to work in RAID0 - and the next generation drives are trending smaller (9.5mm and 7.0mm), not 12.5mm drives.
I expect to see 12.5mm drives to be disappearing soon(ish). -
I haven't done much disk benchmarking, but prima facie these don't look very good:
-
Looks fine to me. It's the fastest 1TB drive. It's still a 5400rpm drive so don't expect miracles.
Here's what it looks like in OS X
-
Yeah I googled a bit more, and these speeds seem pretty standard, so never mind. In any case, I don't need this drive to be a speed demon; that's why my mSATA SDD is for.

Samsung 1TB 2.5" HD for $81 with free shipping @ SuperBiiz. Use code ICECREAM to get 10% off $90.
Samsung HN-M101MBB 1TB 2.5" Hard Drive -
Nice find, Phil!
-
Wow yeah, good deal for a 1TB laptop, and 9.5mm no less. Might have to pick one up. Turned a subcompact notebook into a mini HTPC, 1TB could come in handy over the 320GB in there now.
-
gonna have mine in one week....
will post CDM results -
Just ordered from Dabs.co.uk with an esata 2.5 enclosure as last time I cloned my HD it took over a day with USB 2.
-
Just received my Samsung 2.5 5400RPM 1TB (HN-M101MBB)....
Here is CDM shot right out of boxAttached Files:

My name is Lamk, I have an XPS 17 3D with configuration almost like yours. I heard from other post that you have sucessfully configured Vertex SSD to work with your XPS 17 laptop. Is it still working fine now? I need to know since I'm going to place an order of that SSD on Amazon soon.
Lamk. -
Now for your new ssd purchase ,i would never advise you to get vertex. If u want sata 3...better get Crucial M4 or Intel 510. -
does anyone know when newegg will get more in stock of this hard drive?
-
It looks like they aren't. The SKU is listed as deactivated on Newegg (as of the time of this post), which hints that the drive may have been discontinued.
Newegg.com - SAMSUNG Spinpoint M8 HN-M101MBB
On a similar note, remember when Seagate released one of their external GoFlex Ultras that had a 1TB 9.5mm drive in it? That lasted for only a few months before it too was discontinued.
I find it weird that it has taken hard drive companies such a long time to come out with a 1TB 9.5mm drive, only to pull them off the market before long. Makes me wonder if there's problems or something.
At least WD finally got around to announcing their 1TB 9.5mm drive only a couple weeks ago. Hopefully it'll stay on the market longer than a few months.
Edit: Below is Newegg's link for WD's 1TB 9.5mm, which interestingly is also listed as deactivated (as of the time of this post).

i think the WD are also in same decativated state on newegg. i am puzzled. just when i got a laptop on order and need the space!

Amazon has the Samsung for $99.99. Free shipping, and no tax in most states. That ends up being roughly the same was what Newegg's price was plus tax.
Amazon.com: Samsung SpinPoint SATA 5400rpm 8 MB Cache 1 TB 2.5-Inch Hard Drive (M8 HN-M101MBB): Electronics
That link will show up as $95 from Oyen Digital plus $9 shipping, but on the right pane you can choose to have it ship from Amazon with free shipping. -
Got my hdd yesterday and it's running just fine

Is the Windows 7 default 1024 K alignment all right for this advanced format (4k sectors) drive?
edit: according to Samsung Align Tool it is fine. -
My 1TB Sammy seems to have a crazily high load/unload count.
I've had this drive for 2 weeks and according to HD Tune and CrystalDiskInfo, my drive has 10678 Load/Unload Cycles.
Does anyone else's drive have a number similar to that? -
What are the pros vs cons of this new Samsung versus this one I got?
Amazon.com: Western Digital WD Scorpio Black 500 GB SATA II 7200 RPM 16 MB Cache Bulk/OEM 2.5 Inch Mobile Hard drive - WD5000BPKT: Electronics
What would you guys recommend as the better option? Especially if one has an SSD for the OS and is mainly using the HDD for movies and other media. I was a lot of space but a quiet drive with decent speed. I don't want to be waiting forever to load a file off it though.... -
I'd get the 1TB drive as differences in a 7200RPM drive vs. 5400RPM have much less impact when used as a storage drive. Sequential speeds are both similar for large file transfers and you get double the capacity...
-
Now the WD drive I have in my possession is the "WD5000BPKT" but I'm currently looking at the review of the "WD5000 BEKT"
Western Digital Scorpio Black 500GB Review (WD5000BEKT) | StorageReview.com
EDIT: And I just googled the whole "wd5000bpkt vs wd5000bekt". The BPKT has
1) Advanced Formate (AF)
and
2) Under Performance the Data transfer rate (max)
Host to/from drive (sustained) is 160 MB/s... versus 154 MB/s for the BEKT. So I think for all intents and purposes they are practically the same HDD right?
And I'm comparing that review to that of the Samsung Spinpoint M8
Samsung Spinpoint M8 Review | StorageReview.com
Just as a quick glance they both seem to have similar speeds when it comes to:
1) 2MB Sequential Transfers Read/Write
2) 2MB Random Transfers Read/Write
3) 4K Random Transfers Read/Write
So I'm starting to think the Samsung may be the better buy. I would get twice the capacity for just $30 more you know?
ASIDE: Why is the 4K Random Transfers Read/Write tests done TWICE? If you look at either review there are 2 different graphs associated with that title. Did they just make a mistake and 1 of them is supposed to be "4K Sequential Transfers Read/Write"? -
Anyone have information that could clear up this for me....?

3 x 1 TB Samsung M8 Spinpoint RAID0 performance for anyone who wants to know.
(It says 2tb in there because I have it partitioned to 2tb and 750gb) -
-
I also thought about getting 3 x 1 TB Samsung M8 Spinpoint for my new notebook (P180HM) but eventually I've decided to choose 1 x SSD + 2 x 1 TB Samsung M8 Spinpoint -
yea i join the 3tb club, i just ordered one of these drives yesterday, running out of space, they better make 1.5tb 12.5mm or 2tb real soon.
-
There are notebooks with 3 harddrives. So if one replaces the optical drive with another harddrive, in theory it should be feasible to run 4 x 1 TB Samsung M8 inside of one notebook. I wonder if someone has tried this? -
the 4th is for my 240gb ssd, there will be 4tb when i can afford 1tb ssd
, i got the optical drive for a while
-
-
your 256gb is 240gb after format yes?
-
Probably, yes (I have ordered it but not received it yet).
