You'd be surprised what you can find on eBay, I got my Samsung 470 256gb from there.
-
-
+1 I've bought all of my extra drives over the years(probably at least 30 or 40) off of ebay. HD and SSD, and have never had a problem.
If I order from the West Coast, they usually ship that day, cuz of time zones and I get very quick delivery, even via normal(read: cheap; not priority) mail. -
Anyone been able to pick up one of these? Still out of stock at Newegg and Amazon. The 256GB that is....
-
I'm waiting on my 256gb from Amazon. The only expected date I've seen was 15th Nov on a different site
-
You just pre ordered it? I'm thinking of doing that as well....I just was hoping the whole inflated HDD prices thing would stabalize after Black Friday. And then I'd buy the 830 w/ the WD I'm looking at.
-
That's probably not going to happen for a while, they were projecting a 10% price increase that would hit in the current quarter, but I guess if you buy a HDD in January you should be good.
-
looks like Newegg has the 830 notebook kit in stock. funny though that i was waiting for the samsung 830, but decided in the end to try the new plextor.
-
I just looked and they only have the 128GB ssd in stock. The high sized ones are still showing out of stock....
-
What do you guys think about this AnandTech - The Samsung SSD 830 Review, is it something we should be concerned about? And also 4k Read/Write performance compared to Crucial M4 is lower.
-

My thoughts on the 830 and SSD's in general are summarized by Anand pretty well:
So, if you use your system(s) as I do with little idle time to themselves (and when you're using them, you obviously need the highest, sustained performance possible), then the Samsung 830 SSD might not be the best fit.
Also, with a high power usage, they (along with the Intel 510 Series) would not be my first choice for a long lasting (on battery power) notebook.
For a very efficient SSD, the 320 Series is my only, current choice (others also mention the Samsung 470 in long battery runtimes).
Concerned about it? No, just be aware of it's limitations and quirks and make sure your work scenario's can/will accomadate for them.
The above refers to the performance of the drive, if the reliability is equally or more important, I would be very, very concerned with a 256MB DDR2 RAM cache with no capacitor or other 'power backup' for the controller that is handling our data.
If your power supply is 'iffy', then so are your chances of a reliable storage device in the Samsung 830 SSD.
Good luck. -
The power consumption measured by Anand was for the 512GB version, Storagereview ( Samsung SSD 830 Review (256GB) | StorageReview.com) measured 3.5W constat write and 0.31 idle which seems fine.
My system usually has a lot of idle time and almost no data written to the filesystem, so I should be fine there.
I'm looking for an SSD for my NB so there should be no unexpected powerloss, however for a desktop it might be a problem, 256MB is quite a lot of data. Don't want to believe that samsung would design it this way. Well, I'll probably just wait and see. -

In a notebook, it seems like there is no downside. Unless you need to shutdown an unreponsive system (by holding down the power button or removing the battery), your battery is failing allowing your system to suddenly Shut Off, or, your AC adaptor fails on you while you've removed your battery for one reason or another. All scenarios which have actually happened to me at one time or another with my various systems.
Yeah, this is not at Intel reliability - this is at the 'if you're lucky', reliability level, imo. -
EDIT: Didn't notice the quote, well thats a bummer. -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Yeah, sorry and to provide the source for that quote:
See:
AnandTech - The Samsung SSD 830 Review
Fourth paragraph. -
If one were to go with either the Intel 320 series or the Samsung 470 as Tiller explained I would HIGHLY doubt you will ever have a problem. My Intel or Samsung SSD's have yet to give a hiccup. I remove my drives alot via removing the caddy and putting in a different one all the time. Never had a problem with either one.
-
Here's one picture that shows what's included in notebook upgrade kit:
-
I'm just worried it won't come with that spacer thats needed since its like 2mm thinner or something than most notebook hard drive bays.... -
Picture is from Newegg.
-
Samsung 830 SSD notebook kit includes:
1. SSD disk
2. Samsung magician software + manual
3. Norton Ghost 15 full version CD
4. quick user manual
5. SATA to USB adapter
6. Mounting spacer 2,3mm -
Would you guys get the replacement plan from Newegg for this SSD or any SSD? i'm about to purchase it but I'm kinda deciding what I should do on that part....
Or is samsung's manufacturer warranty good enough? Has anyone had any experience with them as far as failed drives and replacing them? -
It comes with a 3-Year warranty from one of the biggest companies/brands/HDD and SSD manufacturers in the world.
I'd be happy enough with that, personally. -
Got my samsung 830 256gb recently and these are the results...pretty impressive
-
That looks really nice. I can't wait till I get mine.
-
Would this SSD be limited by HM65 chipset?
-
-
I wish Amazon would hurry up and get these in stock. I had a pre-order for a 256Gb drive which didn't ship even after Newegg got them in stock. I've cancelled the order and ordered a 512GB one now but the waiting is driving me insane!
-
I feel yah on Amazon. I got fed up with waiting for them qnd instead I placed my order with Newegg. Just yesterday night actually! My WD Scorpio Black 750GB drive arrived yesterday so I'm hoping that newegg will come thru in time....
At psychppomp1....did you notice significant performance increase in day to day usage? Boot up time etc? -
Also programs like Autocad 2012 open instantly, not taking around 3-5 sec like before. Not a single BSOD so far and i'm not expecting any in its lifetime. Oh yeah, battery life has also increased from 9 hrs to 11 hrs on my thinkpad (9 cell battery). IMHO its the best thing since sliced bread
-
UnfortunatelyI can't order from Newegg as my card is registered in the UK. This isn't an issue with most companies, but Newegg insist on a US registered card even though Im in the US And want it shipped to the US. They wouldn't even accept Paypal as my account is a UK one! -
That sucks chez on the newegg thing. I love Amazon and I have Prime as well but I couldn't wait forever for them to get the Samsung 830 in stock so I used my gift cards and some promo credit given to me by a rep to get my secondary HDD (the Scorpio Black). Anyways I hope Amazon gets it soon for your sake. -
If you set your Magician program to run the Trim command every couple of weeks you will never see any degrading of performance. My 470 still shows the same performance a year later as day one.
I have the TigerDirect store by my house holding one for me, gonna go Sunday and pick it up!!! -
Nice. The magician program doesn't have a big footprint on the laptop in terms of memory usage and space I'm hoping?
Also if someone has ordered the 830 from Newegg about how long did it take before you actually received it? I know ordering on Friday probably lengthened the process but I'm hopeful it will be here by Wednesday perhaps? -
Is anyone else using Magician 3.0 software with their 830 series ssd? When my notebook boots up, Magician displays a pop-up message saying that "magician update available" and yet when i click on this, it just takes me to the samsung ssd website and i can't find any newer versions that 2.0. Ermmmm weird
-
My 830 will be here on Wednesdays according to Newegg's tracking information....yes!
-
so is 830 better than crucial M4 ..
and why is it better ..
I'm confused -
-

I have a X220 laptop as well with 9 cell but with an Core i5.
I'm thinking of transitioning to the Samsung 830 128GB model.
Can you help me on how to set this up?
I'm pretty proficient with computers but I've never done a complete hard drive swap before.
I have the standard 320 GB HD with Win 7 Prof running with all my programs on the same drive.
I made a recover disk that Lenovo tells you to make. But that is it.
Thank you! -
Of course, you could use Norton Ghost (incl with Samsung 830 SSD) to clone your existing drive onto the SSD but i strongly suggest you avoid doing this...always best to install the operating system from new on a SSD to minimize the risk of any issues. Just use your Lenovo factory recovery disks to re-install Windows 7 on the SSD and use the Samsung Magician Software (included) to monitor the health of your SSD. -
I've got the 830 in my possession! However my replacement Envy is a pos and on top of that HP just announced the new Envy model refresh. SO bottom line is that I'm going to have to wait until the new one is out and see if HP will replace my current Envy with the new one. Then and only then can I install the SSD.
Did anyone else's come with a free copy of Batman Arkham City? Thats pretty sweet of Samsung.....where do you download the game from tho? Steam? Can't wait till I'm finally set up and have Batman and Starcraft II on the new Envy.....so close and yet so far. -
I got my Samsung 830 256gb ssd from newegg yesterday, attempted to use norton ghost to clone the drive but it didn't work so well. Forgot to install bootloader. Just did a clean install and am now re-installing all the drivers for laptop and then it's on to re-installing games.
My drive came with a card and serial number for the game, looks like it's downloadable. Will find out once I'm satisfied everything's A+ after I'm done with clean install. -
Did you also get a free copy of Batman Arkham City? And if so have you had the opportunity to download it yet? I'm just curious how easy a process it is and what digital store they are using to provide the game.... -
My ssd is actually missing the code . . . all attempts to to resolve with Newegg and Samsung havent worked yet. Will try again tomorrow - frustrating . . .
update: in progress with Samsung. we'll see what happens, but keep your fingers crossed. The drive works great though so far. -
Samsung 830 128GB beats Crucial M4 128GB firmware 009.

Hi,
does anybody know how fast is 830 128gb on SATA II? Is it worth buying to notebook with SATA II or better buy something less expensive on SATAII (470, Intel 320). I am asking because I don't know if my notebook supports SATA III. It is ProBook 6465b. -
SATA III is backwards and forwards compatible with anything, as long as it fits it works; and there isn't much of a price difference between them; might as well go for something newer that can be stuffed into a newer computer.
I ordered a 64GB one off newegg, I could run some SATA II tests when when actually get the thing. -
Personally im very dissapointed with an SSD, in general.
I don't know if its because of the chipset or the CPU or something, but the general "feel" is maybe 20-30% more "snappier".
Maybe its because this is my first SSD, but comparing to my Scorpio Black 500GB i had before its not very impressive.
I did all the tweaks and tuneups, but really only the benchmarks show me its an SSD inside and not Scorpio... -
If you don't often do these things, I can understand your computer doesn't feel much faster.
Did you do a clean install?
What is your notebook exactly? -
Its a HP laptop with a dual core turion (griffin), 780g chipset, 4GB of DDR2 and Win7 Ultimate x64.
The only thing i didn't do is a clean install, but i keep my system clean and optimised all the time, and i did all the neccessary steps before and after cloning the system parititon to an SSD.
I do have in plan to do a clean install after my 2nd HDD caddy for the Scorpio arrives, so i won't discard the SSD just yet.
Boot time has improved maybe for a few seconds, not really noticable unless you time it.
Apps launch is also not noticeably faster, except the bigger apps like Photoshop for example, where you can feel the improvement, but nothing to write home about...
To be honest, i felt more improvement after i replaced my original Toshiba 5400rpm drive with the Scoripo 7200rpm.
I don't know... i'll decide what to do with it after the clean install,
if things dont improve i'll probably sell it.
Luckily i got it for 190$, day after i bought it price went up to 280$ here lol
