I have recently read from an Apple forum and one guy posted that "He had contacted w/ Seagate guys and they have recently postponed Momentus 7200.4 to Q1-2009.
I am not sure how correct and reliable this information is. I will post the link here as soon as I find that...

This thing started to get boring for me -
Hi Guys,
Just an update on my disk swap to share.
I'm on a latitude E6500 that came with the WD2500BEVS 250G 5400rpm drive.
Based on all the useful information here (thanks guys!), I decided to upgrade to the Hitachi 7K320 160Gb single platter (7200rpm).
It's been 10days since I cloned and swapped in the new drive and I must say I'm really happy.
Vista is snappier - though for normal use, the difference is most noticeable on startup and shutdown and when stuff life anti virus scan is running in the background.
But when you're pushing it e.g. running an XP guest in VMware (on this 1 hard drive), the difference is night and day!
Very slight increase in vibration - not noticeable (perhaps due to single platter instead of dual platters at 7200rpm)
And drive temperature has...DROPPED! Amazing!
The WD2500BEVS usually was around 41 deg C in normal use and gets up to 45-46 deg C in heavier use. Max registered ever was 50deg!
The 7K320 (single platter) is usually around 36 deg C in normal use and gets up to 40 deg in heavier use. Max ever (so far) has been 43 deg.
So quite easily a 4-5deg C drop in temp. and the palm rest does feel cooler. But surprisingly the latitude still keeps the fan going on SLOW (~2700 rpm) - I'm using the Dell Recommended power setting. So no change on this front.
Don't know about battery life since I'm hardly running on battery but if temps are lower, perhaps power dissipation is a little lower too.
Other details:
I'm using about 80Gb of space now (about 50% full). On the WD2500BEVS, I also used up the first 80Gb.
So I'd say it's a worthwhile upgrade if you can live with less space.
Cost me just $78.99 on zipzoomfly with free shipping.
I'm glad I didn't wait for the 7200.4 and guess I'd move up to the single-platter 250Gb version of the 7200.4 6months after it's launched and prices have come down...
Thanks for all your info and excellent insight! -
OMG,
I did a search for 7200.4 and looks like it is now available on a Swedish online store:
7200.4 ST9500420AS 500Gb 16Mb
Check out the page below:
www.multitronic.se/showprod.php?prod_id=ST9500420AS&b=1
or go to the main page at www.multitronic.se and put ST9500420AS in the search field!
Price is 1,314 Swedish Kronor which translates to about 158 US Dollars - pretty cheap by our previous estimates!
Unfortunately I don't understand Swedish. Seems like it's already available. Can anybody confirm if this is just a pre-order before launch?
I was able to add it to a shopping cart. I added a 7200.3 250Gb as well to my cart. And they both look the same (no obvious differences to suggest that one is not in stock etc.) -
Even if it's not in stock yet, if they're taking orders in Sweden now it must be Santa loading up his sleigh in time for a Christmas delivery!
Sounds like it should be out soon... -
Wow it's great to see this finally showing up in stores now.
A google search only shows Swedish stores so far:
http://www.prisjakt.nu/produkt.php?p=374826
124 euros isn't bad at all. WD5000BEVT is going for 100-110 euros. -
Listed at quite a few UK stores now too:
http://www.google.co.uk/products?q=ST9500420AS&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8
Saying stock expected 19/12/08. Not a bad price either at £101. -
Yay! Nice Swedish fish to find it! +rep Not quite as good per GB as some of the Hitachi deals of late have been on the 320/7200, but a reasonable starting price I think.
-
yep it´s listed in germany and austria also. prices are similar to the swedish stores. ~120 Euros
http://geizhals.at/deutschland/?cat=hd2s7&xf=6_500~160_7200
guess i´ll order one right now. -
and the 160Gb for USD 69.99

7200.4 showing at a Canadian site for USD 130! Wow!

shoko, can you post benchmark results when you get one?
-
i will ...
i ordered one, but for now the shops ( including the one i put my trust in ) actually don´t have this hdd in stock. i do hope they will get them before christmas...
// edit
i just checked the availability of the hdd at all the shops offering it, and the result is confusing...
some say the estimated delivery date is 17.3.2009, some say it is in February 2009, one says it will have the hdd in 3-4 weeks. one shop says it will have the hdd at 08.12.2008 , and another one says it has a few ???
all in all that is very confusing. i ordered at the shop that claims to have the hdd. i come to think that the hdd won´t be available for quite a few weeks. and i guess the two shops that claim to have the hdd now or in two days are just trying to push their sales by offering something no one actually has.
i really do hope that i am wrong about the shops trying to push their sales. -
just call them to ask if they are in stock. that would save you time
-
@schoko, r u ordered that in PCZock?
-
-
dang, buy.com has it for $145.99 with free shipping.
http://www.buy.com/prod/500gb-7200r...nch-seagate-momentus/q/loc/101/210490349.html
Gotta save my money now -
i´ll wait till monday to give them a call, and ask wether this hdd is really in stock or not. -
I see their reseller rating is good, if I were you I'd just order it. -
i already did order it yesterday....
but the reseller rating is just average, thats what keeps me thinking... why should an average reseller have those hdd´s before the big players have them in stock ?
anyway, i guess ill find out tomorrow. -
Well they get a smiley on Geizhals so it seems ok.
Hope you get it soon and will do some benchmarks. -
That's the free-fall sensor version too.
-
They removed my message. Does it mean that the drive will be delayed? What is the exact release date? -
Maybe it just means that they will be available mid December as stated on the Seagate page.
It states 18th December here which ties in nicely. -
They're no longer in stock at http://www.pczocker.de/seagate-mome...zoll-gforce-p-391750-1.html?campaign=geizhals
-
and now the 7200.4 500GB is no longer listed at pczocker.de.
looks like they never had this hdd. i have not yet received anything more than just an confirmation of my order.
guess the 7200.4 won´t be available for a while, even if it is listed at some shops. -
According to Seagate, the drive is still on schedule for release on mid December.
http://media.seagate.com/2008/09/se...uters-with-worlds-highest-capacity-and-speed/
But when will reputable US vendor like Newegg or PcConnection start taking order? I don't feel like taking order from buy.com because of their bad rep. They have 3.3 out of 10 in resellerratings.com. -
well like i expected... the shop pczocker.de did list this hdd and they did not have it.
today i received an email saying that i they could not regard my order, and now the stock is sold without any further knowledge when the next batch comes in.
all this happened after i asked them via their customer interface whether they made a mistake listing this hdd as available.
liars... they did not even have the guts to admit it was a mistake ( was it ?)
so the waiting game continues... at least here in europe. -
It looked very amazing to me that a European retailer acquired them before everyone else... Now I can fully understand that zockerpc is just trying to get more hits...
-- -
The Samsung 500GB 2.5" actually turned up in Europe first (retail).
-
A dutch supplier is offering them for 111 euros now. Very cheap. No stock though.

WOOT!
Just came across this thread, and perfect timing...this baby's just what I've been looking for.

FWIW, its currently listed for $132 USD at NCIXUS (status = unavailable):
ncixus.com/products/35410/ST9500420AS/Seagate/ <--- C&P URL due to my low post count
Seems like a really excellent price to debut at, IMNSHO. -
i'm pretty excited, it's gonna b a pretty hot drive, i already have so many things iw ould love to put on there
-
-
-
Both has "2 platters", "4 R/W heads" and spinning at "7200RPM". I think these 3 parameters determine the heat (not the capacity). -
Notice the little smile after my comment?
It was tongue in cheek. However, it's likely that it will run slightly warmer. -
Has anyone seen the 250GB 7200.4 listed at a shop?
-
on a side note, I have NO idea how fast hard drive cycles are but it seems like the upgrade to 500gb 7200rpm is taking FOREVER. does anybody know if this is the exception or the rule?
-
-
seagate has just posted the detail description and spec of this drive
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/laptops/momentus/momentus_7200.4
This is a good news. That can only mean that the release date is imminent. -
A little power is shaved off of idle too, but not too much.
This is a pretty good news. -
guys, don't bother .. the drive is not available yet.
when it is, then we can talk.
