What a ridiculous comment.
It will be out in a few days and the spec sheets have just been released. What's the problem?
-
I just got an email from Insight (UK store) and they said lead time is 5-6 days. I'm looking forward to fitting 2 of these into my macbook pro.
-
How is Seagate reliability?
-
Excellent! We're hoping you'll run some benchies and post it here for us!
-
good luck with the install, the big downfall to the macpro's is that the aluminum chassis echoes the sound of the harddrive, and picks up all of the vibrations. Of course thats a generalization which fits to most of the macpro's. Hopefully yours has soe sort of rubber or plastic parts connecting the harddrive, allowing for some noise dampening.
In my opinion, Seagate has not been very reliable, but every drive series is different, so it could be great or it could be bad. Hopefully its good

If anyone is upgrading to the 7200.4 please do some real life measurements before and after the upgrade. Like copying a 500GB folder, booting the OS, loading some large documents and applications. Synthetic benchmarks don't mean a lot, if anything at all.
-
That's a lot of adult movies. -
lol. I meant 500 MB.
-
it just the size
not so important ,we should do more for other things -
why would they call it a spec sheet if it doesn't have the speed? i feel tricked!
-
Eh, you what?
-
I'm most interested in boot time comparisons, I'm planning on upgrading from a 200GB Hitachi 7K200 and my boot times are fast, but a little faster would be nice

If true, that's impressive.

came across these links today:
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Seagate/ST9500420AS/
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=35410&vpn=ST9500420AS&manufacture=Seagate
so could be anyday ?!!!! -
I don't think Seagate would wait for that. The sooner they can release this, the more market share they will take from WD and others.
-
you have it wrong,
Seagate releases their drives when hitachi and western digital are ready. They do this for sales purposes.
They are all in it for each other.
K-TRON -
I believe Seagate will release their 500GB/7200rpm before WD or Hitachi will.
-
if it's that much power comsumption, I'm buying one when they come out
-
Seems like suppliers are pushing back the expected date.
31 december on 2 websites.
Price in Holland is going down. Starting from 107 euro now.

Some bad news from Seagate... I had a chat w/ a sales representative and this is what the whole conversation is:
Hello. How may I help you?
ramgen: Hello
ramgen: I am wondering when the Seagate Momentus 7200.4 series laptop drives will be available in the US market. I am especially interested in the ST9500420ASG.
ramgen: or ST9500420AS will be fine too.
Jeffery H.: It will take a few minutes of research for me to get the info
ramgen: sure, thank you!
Jeffery H.: It doesn't show as coming out in the next quarter so I would say second quarter of next year
ramgen: ok. thank you
Jeffery H.: You're welcome and thank you for contacting Seagate!

while i don't doubt the competence of your sales representative, it seems odd that seagate will put a product page up for a product they don't plan on releasing for four-five more months
-
They have put the spec up at the front page of their site.
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/laptops/momentus/
I hope the rep is wrong. I think he is wrong or I would be very pissed as I have delayed purchasing new hard drive and clean installing my system for 3 months in anticipation of this drive. -
I don't believe it either. It's just one sales representive.
Prices are showing up every where, it would be strange if it wasn't released first quarter. -
the 7200.4 500GB has shot up to the number one sale on NCIX's 2.5" HDD list. That usually means it'll be ready very soon. Availability also say 2-5 days but that often doesn't mean anything
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=35410&vpn=ST9500420AS&manufacture=Seagate
(Yes ordering mine soon...might do benchmarks if I have time!) -
Can't wait for it. My stipend will be used for this drive
-
One US store seems to have it in stock
http://www.ctistore.com/product/1/code,ST9500420AS.html
But, judging from the store poor rating at resellerratings.com, I have a feeling that they don't really have it. -
These guys are usually pretty accurate but this is for the G-Force version:
http://www.kikatek.com/product_info.php?products_id=91205&source=froogle
9th January
They don't have an ETA for the standard version. -
Interestingly enough price in Netherlands has dropped to 106 euro.
None of the shops claim to have stock though. -
please, keep dropping in price. i think with thi seconomy, my sweet spot for buying the harddrive would be $100-$120 USD
-
This page has changed from 19/12/08 to "Manufacturer cannot provide a restock date". Not a good sign.
-
it's too late for the holidays, i'm thinking seagate won't release this thing until after CES
-
Does anyone know when Hitachi and WD would follow with their releases of similar HDDs?

these are now available from buy.com. I wonder how they are going to run. I wouldn't mind picking up a pair.
-
FWIW, I got the folllowing msg when I attempted to add one to my cart:
+++
Temporarily Sold Out.
More inventory may be available. Place your order today and be one of the first to receive this product when it arrives!
+++
Oh well... -
Good question. Strangely I don't think anything has been announced.
A search on Google for WD5000BEKT does return a lot of results though. All Chinese webpages. -
so expensive on buy.com, guess i'll be waiting a bit longer than others
-
Nope, it's still out of stock.

weird worked for me last night. -
Looks like depending on your location, it might be available from 12/29 throughout the first week of January. According to Seagate, the orders are already "in transit".
-
These will be available in other sizes besides 500GB right?
-
Yes, 250GB also.
-
Zipzoomfly claims to sell it for $139.99 when it becomes available...
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10009857
It is good that at least one reputable US retailer listed it...
-- -
Thanks for posting. And welcome to the forums.
-
Agreed, tho I've found NCIXUS to be very reputable, too. Even tho they are a .ca corp they have a good stateside presence. I suspect now that ZZF has a listing, the Egg may not be far behind, either.
Interesting that NCIX and ZZF are w/i 4 bux of each other. That lends some credibility to ~135 -140 USD initial stateside pricing. A bit high, IMHO, but about right for a debut street price, I believe, and most surely will drop quickly as the channels fill if there's no production snags. -
Judging from several online stores all over the world, it seems that the drive will only be available for purchase after the 1st week of January.
-
Hopefully the price will be low, I'll grab one as soon as I get my next pay check.
-
same here. replacing my 160Gb 5400 rpm on my new Z
-
I want the 250GB Seagate 7200.4 IF the real life performance is really good.
Otherwise I'll take a single platter WD1600BEKT. -
For that I am afraid you have to wait even longer. No online stores in the world even list it in their site.
-
True, we only recently got the Seagate 7200.3 160GB here.
