My Western Digital 250GB drive failed for the second time on the 31st of December @ 3am and I had a trip out of town the day after where I absolutely needed my laptop - so I decided to go out and get a 7200.4 that day. My local computer shop where I got the WD drive said they had the 7200.4 but didn't... they said they could order it but had no idea when it would actually come in (after telling me at first that it should be there in 2 business days). So I decided, what the heck - I'd get the 5400.6 instead with a $20 boxing week discount at another store. I went and got it and it worked fine, fit no problem and XP install was great - but I could use my Western Digital 5400rpm 250GB drive as an HD PVR drive in my laptop - the 5400.6 is ok with this now that I reinstalled my OS again after the reinstall on the 31st.
I like that its quiet, but it doesn't seem any queiter than my previous Scorpio really - but it does seem a bit slower than the Scorpio, but only slightly. For speed the 7200.4 should definitely be better, I just wish it was available last week when I needed it.

no specimens have made it into the wild.
in other news, my supplier who was listing a recurring cycle of 12 days has now changed to an actual date. the 16th of January is the delivery date in Australia. This is good news, i think.

When the 5400.6 500GB first came out in mid-November 2008, the price was about $140 (Newegg), but it quickly dropped to about $125 before Black Friday. Afterwards, it averaged about $120 during the first couple weeks of December, then $105-110 during the latter half of the month.
The rate at which the 7200.4 price will drop upon release will be anyone's speculation, but I wouldn't be surprised if it follows a similar pattern as the 5400.6.

If you factor cost per gigabyte, the 500GB 7200.4 is cheaper per gigabyte than the 320GB 7200.3.
-
guess i could not wait any longer.
today i have again checked the availability, and guess what...
some stores have shifted the possible delivery date back to 01. of april. ( fools day)
thats enough for me. i need more space on my hdd now, cause i will have to work in the next few weeks. so i ordered a 500GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue.
i am planning on buying the 7200.4 also, if it still gets delivered this year
if it does i´ll probably put the scorpio into an external enclosure.
patience to all others that still can wait. i am done waiting for now. -
What about the Seagate FreeAgent™ Go 500GB Portable Hard Drive? Is this the 7200.4? It's $160 at costco.com and the description is below:
Capacity: 500GB
USB 2.0: up to 480 Mb/s
Rotational Speed: 7200 RPM
Dimensions: 6.89" H x 1.33" W x 6.77" L
Weight: 2.20 lbs.

Ironically, so far people have only found the crappy Samsung 500GB drives inside those (including myself).
-
-
Simply because the Seagate 500GB 5400rpm drives were not ready when they started to ship the 500GB externals.
-
I've heard mixed reviews about those Freeagent drives. There was a 1TB one on sale yesterday for $109 at newegg. You would be better off buying an HD you like and stuffing it in an enclosure.
-
I am done too! I have been using a 5400rpm drive since July 2008 hoping to get Seagate's 7200.4 series soon. It seems like it will not appear till Q2 '09.
This is not what I would expect from Seagate. They did announce their 7200.4 around the end of July '08 and still there are no certain news about that. -
-
-
But as it's been pointed out you could RMA one at 4 years and get a nice new drive, which we consumers DO like
-
I don't care about what brand my HDD is. I care about the technical specs. As long as warranty is over 1 year, I'm fine, because within 1 year, something with 50% more capacity will be available. I can pretty much wait. Unless WD makes a 500GB 7200RPM laptop HDD, I will be waiting for the 7200.4.
-
Half a year since they initially announced it now - surprised we haven't had Hitachi or Western Digital announce their own versions yet. Then again, maybe that's the path Seagate should've gone! Wouldn't surprise me to see Hitachi or WD release one shortly after, or even before, the Seagate one at this rate.
Then there's 640 GB or 750 GB as well, someone probably will be coming out with that before too long. They've got 512 GB SSD's now and the price of SSD's has fallen quite a bit, the hard drive manufacturers have to do something this year to stay the top choice for a couple years out.
Though maybe the lower prices have cut into research budgets? As great as they are now, it does make you wonder if prices this low are best for consumers in the long term. -

Or releasing a product earlier than it should (not checking for problems/bugs) like seagate has done with the 1.5TB desktop drive.
They seem to do everything to earn money nowadays! -
(new SSD thread)
-
1.5TB 7200.11 didn't have any problems. I bought one for my desktop when it came out and it was fine.

From my source(friend) , the drive will be out on February 16th, 2009
-
Oh February...
With CES and all the announcement of 1TB and SanDisk new SSD, I really don't know if I should wait 1 more month. Seagate 320 GB 7200 price has gone down dramatically... Ahhh the temptation... -
feb i see...

Email from BetterIT this morning...

here's another update: the drive is still not available ... lol
-
soon... they sure do keep us waiting lol
-
You've waited this long already. A little more won't hurt

Rejoice!
Dell has received the first order from Seagate for their notebooks

Speed: 500GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) with Free Fall Sensor [add $150 or $5/month1]
We should be able to order the bare hard drive from online store very soon! -
Seagate probably delayed the 7200.4 to fix the problems with the desktop 7200.11. I'm kinda feeling uneasy because I have 4 Seagate 7200.11 1TB in RAID 0 in my desktop.
-
seriously, its not that.
The reason why they are not being released is because they wait for other manufaturers to sell the same poduct. I know hitachi and western digital have things planned, but they are not ready yet to be released. When at least one other mechanical drive manufacturer is ready to sell the same product they release it to keep profits up and their stock going.

If you look at it another way, if Seagate beats WD and Hitachi to the market, what incentive would WD and Hitachi have to release a similar 500gb drive to compete? Wouldn't they want to upend instead and release say a 640gb one to beat the seagate one?

In Italy the 7200.4 500gb will be available from my shop for sure on the 30th of January.

Had to slide down the scroll bar in the HDD section. I thought it would've been near the top next to the 320/7200 option. I didn't realize there was another option needing scrolling...my bad. -

(failing desktop drives manufactured in December)
While I was pretty confident in buying the 7200.4, now I am seriously considering a SSD. Keeping customers waiting, shorting the warranty and then this issue with new Seagate drives... I am tired of that. Are they trying to discourage customers from buying their drives or what?
Only if the SSDs were cheaper to get here... -

Alienware has it. According to them, approx availability Jan 30 -
But on to other points, like you I too am on-the-fence about an HDD or SSD for my new NB. FWIW, the new G.Skill 'New Titan' series is looking pretty good so far in the New SSD Thread (Benchmarks, Brands, News and Advice) from post #2215ff.
$299 USD MSRP for 128GB, (just sold out at Newegg) - That's exactly my personal price and size cross over point for me to switch to SSD *if* it performs well w/o any stuttering or other issues. The new revs of OCZ SSDs are due out w/i the next week or two also. -
So my 2 weeks old 7200.3 320Gb just died ! i am sending it back right now to get a refund and i'll get myself a 7200.4 as soon as they are available in the US.
-
Yes, the longer the 7200.4 takes, the better and cheaper SSD's become. The G.Skill seems to have avoided major stuttering, and at $499 for the 256GB it's a great price per GB for a performance SSD.
-
Actually, I'll probably wait at least a few weeks after the release of the 7200.4 Momentus before buying one, so I can see how the initial feedback goes from the retail buying public.
I very much agree with you, in that the SSDs are looking better the longer the new Momentus release date slips. I was initially planning to buy a system HDD with 250GB/7200RPM platters for speed, not capacity. So a $299 128GB SSD that performs really well would trump a $140 500GB HDD for my purposes.
So for me, personally, the Seagate delays may have been fortuitus. -
u meand 128gb?
anyway i'm in the same boat. if this thing woulda come out a month ago i'd have one, but now ssd's are looking quite tempting, with the titan being 299$ for 128gb and i want to see about ocz's new batch to0.
