    Yes, GB, not MB...Oops!

I've been in this biz a bit too long, I think.

Now, I've got to get prepared for thinking in terms of TB...

I think no matter how cheap SSD's are mechanical harddrives will always be a lot cheaper so it really is your personal preference

Is the 7200.4 going to be 2 platter design? I hope this is faster than the wd5000bevt, which blew away lotta competition.

ya it's going to be 2 platter design. it has to be faster than wd5000bevt since it runs 7200rpm compares to wd's 5400rpm. if it's slower, seagate failed big time

Was the WD500BEVT faster than the 320GB 7200RPM drives? I didn't pay attention to that drive at all.

i heard both but ultimately i think it was just 500gb hype and the 320's were still faster...

From my reading of these things, the 500 GB WD performed near to the 320GB 7200 RPM, but the 320's were still noticibly faster. I think it was because the acess times were still a tad faster.

According the Toms Hardware review for the WD5000BEVT, the 320gb 7200rpm is slower in some tests compared to the 500gb.

Just when I had grabbed a few 7200 RPM 320GB drives for my MacBook Pro (one internal and several for downloads and backups, backups, backups) I hear about the new Momentus 7200.4.
Oh, well... The 320's will do me just fine, but now I’m thinking about getting a couple of the Momentus 7200.4 500GB, the MCE internal drive kit that takes the place of the optical drive and have two of these babies in my MBP. Sweet!

BTW, I only recently discovered these forums and think they're great. Thanks to all for the helpful info and input.

    Hi there everyone!
I'm looking to upgrade my HDD to the 7200.4 and it is clear that stock hasn't arrived yet. I'm in the UK and at this site https://www.rstcomputers.com/WebStor...2&P1=79&P2=113 it says the stock's due in 1 - 3 days. Do you think this is likely? Some other items on the website say 7 - 10 days.

this game is going on quite a while...
read this thread since the beginning of december !

i have found some shops dating the arrival of the shipment to the last week of jan - first week of february. i don´t give that much on a possible arrival date.

it will arrive some day, and most likely i am gonna buy one, but i will definetly not expect ( anymore) that this drive is available at a date given by resellers.

Wow, someone's dedicated to the cause! I am guessing then that these expectations are usually failing then. I suppose I'll just keep an eye on that website and if it turns out to be in stock I'll try and grab one quick! Problem is I think lots and lots of people want one, it seems to be quite a big stage in HDD progress.

Chiaotzu, you should know that just because a website has this hard drive "in stock", doesn't mean that they have it in stock. Several times over the past couple months various stores in various countries have reported it being "in stock" only to have to cancel orders that were placed because it wasn't in stock. At this point I wouldn't believe it's actually in stock until I saw it at a major retailer (Fry's, PC World, Best Buy, Newegg, Zipzoomfly, etc.). The good news is Dell is offering it on a couple of their XPS models now, so it might actually be coming out soon.

Also, your link is giving an HTTP 404 error. Probably not a good sign ;).

Oh haha sorry about the link, stupid dots! It should be this link here. I think you are right about the supposed waiting times, paying now and assuming it will be with them between 1 and 3 days would be a huge mistake, yes. I suppose I'm just eager like a lot of others in the thread! Well I'll keep my eyes open anyway, thanks!

Edit: Haha it has changed now to 7 to 10 days, you were absolutely right!

One reliable seller here in Germany says that they expect to receive them on the 5th February 2009.
So around end January, beginning February they should be out.

i've been keeping an eye on this thread since july and been struggling with (give or take) 1gb of free space left on my notebook's system drive. i'm in the same boat as everyone here -impatiently and frustratingly waiting for an actual release.

on an unrelated matter i've been reading the msi wind modding forum and came across this post where someone claims to have installed an ST9500420AS 7200.4 drive from a bulk purchase in japan. can anybody here confirm this can be purchased now? thanks.

In starting to think all the hard drive manufactures are holding back on us. They're trying to rid of their 5400rpm 500gb inventory maybe.

Is there anything wrong with the install you have? If not, then there's really no reason for a fresh install.

I'm going to be going to Japan in April I think. If they really are being sold over there for a third of the price that we get them in other countries I think I should buy loads...but to be honest I can't really see that. Family computing doesn't seem to be much further over there than it is here, importing can't triple the cost can it?

That ad is misleading. It says that they have it in stock but the bottom note says that needs 2 weeks to ship. It is another way to say that they don't have it in stock. BTW that ad has been like that in the past 1 month.

    5 year warranty baby...

btw i'm glad i found this thread. ive been planning on upgrading my HDD to something larger, and the only 500gig HDDs are 5400rpm.

was just about to purchase a 1.5TB Freeagent Xtreme for backup today at Bestbuy, and am glad i didnt.

i'll likely wait for reviews of this 7200.4 though as i'm looking for a silent drive.

Same here, I want to see some HD Tune screen shots as proof.

I've been hammering this thread since early Dec and still no signs of real legit release date. I really want to see some numbers because right now the SSD sticky posted some amazing numbers for G.Skills and I'm very tempted to get that instead of 7200.4.

If any NBR get this hard drive, please post the benchmarks asap.

This is an ugly and dirty trick... Announce the product on July '08 and as of Jan '09 there is nothing available yet...

Including the 7200.11 firmware incidents, my mind tells me to avoid this company like a plague.

All these delay from WD and Hitachi on 7200 rpm notebook HD got me thinking...

They could be all doing their own version of the SSD drive and allocate less resource in research and development on bigger notebook drives.

I find myself looking at this thread everyday hoping someone could post some good news. :'(
