If another application is trying to access the HDD during the HD Tune test then it causes those speed drops. I attach an example of what happens when running HD Tune during a virus scan.

Do you have any way to hook that drive to another computer and test it? With SATA it should be easy if you have a desktop SATA rig.
I remember that for SATA on some Hitachi drives you needed to flash it or something to get the SATA working ... just a wild thought.
Open up a process monitor while running HDTune get an idea if something else is running. (cntl/alt/del) processes. -
EDIT: I don't know if this has any relevance to the HD tune problem, but when I tried installing xp yesterday (before I knew that my HD, not vista, was causing my comp to run slowly) xp did not even recognize the HD at all, and refused to install. Also, could the fact that the HD originally came out of an IBM notebook be causing any problems? -
I just plugged the drive into my desktop and got the exact same results as when it was in the laptop. I think my drive is probably faulty like slowdive's.
Does anybody know exactly what is wrong with the drive so I can tell the person I bought it from? I would feel more comfortable giving them a specific problem instead of just saying that the drive ran slowly.
Thanks. -

Ok, I just ran the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test and got a "Defective Device" error code; needless to say, I will be shipping the HD back to the seller. Thanks everybody for all your help.

sager 9860 2x 80 gig 5400 rpm sata 150 drives in raid 0;
no one here has tested it with a raid 0 setup?
it appears that raid 0 nearly doubles the performance of those that posted single drive setups of similar drives. also, i noticed the bigger the hard drive the faster it isAttached Files:

Sager from my Sig.
Wonky RAID-0 setup. BIOS says all three drives are in a RAID-0 array. My total disk capacity is ~3x160, so its like the other portion of my 250GB drive is useless. Also having some stability issues. Incomplete boot cycles, BSOD's on exit from oblivion. Thats about it.Attached Files:

you have raid 5. was this factory installed when you ordered the system or have you done it?
you would get much greater performance if you chose raid 0. raid 5 gives you the ability to rebuild one failed drive but at the expense of fair to poor write speeds when speaking about performance. raid 0 gives has good to excellent speeds in both the read and write departments.
with your raid 5 setup, the 3rd (and biggest) hard drive is having 90 of it's gigs of space go to waste as it's not being registered. but i think the more imporant thing is that the 3rd hdd is of a different spindle speed than the other 2 and this may be causing errors.
i think if you went with raid 0 for the first 2 drives and simply have the 3rd hdd as standalone you would get greater performance and an additional 90 gigs of space. you would use the 3rd drive as a backup for important files like game patches, game saves, family pictures and videos, etc.
if the raid 0 array failed, you would obviously have to re-instal the OS and programs again but you would not lose important files as those would have manually been backed up to the 3rd drive. if the 3rd drive failed before the raid 0 array then you would not lose anything because all the files on the 3rd hdd would naturally be in the raid 0 array. -

While you were running the HDTune, something else was also accessing the HD, which causes those spikes in the graph.

This is not quite on topic, but this is the most interesting HD Tune result I have ever seen in my life. I was fixing a computer for a friend of mine, and this was the HD Tune result:

RAID 0 too scary for me. 1 failure and boom no more data. I'll live with a bit less speed for more protection. -

hi guyz,
I have pathetically bad trasfer rates on my fairly new Dell Inspiron 1520.
My HDD is a Seagate [ST9160821AS - 160 GB].
My Min transfer rate : 1.3 Mbps
My Max transfer rate : 1.8 Mbps
Is this abnormal, or is it observed by anybody else, before I check with DELL engineers ?. -
Check for errors with HDTune, Seagate Tools and chkdisk.
Last option, full format.
Recently i had abnormal speeds on an old drive that didn't have any errors and a full format solved the problem.

guyz,
i found a resolution.
DELL BIOS defaults SATA operation in ATA mode (emulated IDE).
I switched it to use AHCI with NCQ and now things are running really fast.
My average transfer rate is 36 MB/s.
My doubt is :
Should the SATA interface under ATA also oeprate with reasonable performance ? If it had to , it was pathetic for me.
Any thoughts ? -

Wow that M-TRON drive looks very appealing and satisfying.
Flamenko, what kind of boot times do you get with that M-TRON drive?
How much would that 32Gb M-Tron go for?
Over the summer, I may buy two of them for my Voodoo, if they are somewhat affordable.
K-TRON -
I expect some good news soon from Mtron on new pricing and larger capacities (64Gb). My boot times with either of the Mtrons is under 30 seconds, press of button until desktop started complete.
If you want to learn about the SSDs, I hve several hyperlinks below including tons of benchmarks on the diff drives in the New SSD thread. This includes PCmark scoring. -

Haven't a clue how many loading sequences it is but it includes bt, upek fpr software, brother mfc control center, avg antivirus, quikset, sidebar, battery, internet confirmation and sound in my system info bar. The bar that travels across only does it 2 or 3 times max...its quick.
My desktop shows dreamscene running a video, ObjectDock up top...here...included a picture of the final product just tested it at 29sec....Attached Files:

Just to give some kind of reference, on my old desktop XPS 420 the bar went across twice on a 2x 320GB 7200rpm RAID 0 setup.
So for a 13inch laptop that is very nice!
I'm actually typing this from a family members m1330, just a basic low spec one and it goes along 7 times I know it would be quicker but they won't let me format it incase anything goes wrong!

Been there.....got my wife a U300 a few weeks back. I want to put a Memoright ssd into it and am ready to convert it to 64bit...found all the drivers. She won't let me near it now so I gotta sneak i one day when shes working.
Im a bit worried to because if for some odd reason something happens, she will never let up on it. -
The thing is, this m1330's screen flickers on battery so a replacement is coming in a week or so anyway, I just want to prove that it will work before doing it on the replacement, but she won't budge -
Download Acronis and make a complete backup disk set. Tell her if anything goes wrong, you can reset it back to where she wants it....whether it be as is right now or like the day she first started it.

My Vostro's HDD. Seagate 160 GB 5400 RPM.
I don't really understand why it always dips to a low rate for one second. Tried running it with some background apps open, with no/fewer background apps [even turned off my Anti-Virus for that time], but no dice. Apparently, this "problem" is also present in other Seagate drives. I'm disappointed because my desktop's 250 GB 7200 RPM HDD is a Seagate and it is amazingly fast and has a better and "consistent" result [of course, it's probably because it's a 3.5" HDD with higher capacity and faster rotation speed, but still...]. I'll post it up when I use my desktop again [lazy -_-;]
EDIT: I skimmed through the whole thread and I was wondering how do I know if I'm running on SATA 1.5 or 3.0? How do I change it? Is it important? Will it make my hard drive faster? Does my laptop even support it? lol... Sorry too much questions. xD;Attached Files:
