That would be sick man! Goes very well with the Eurocom Premamod BIOS! I have a strong feeling that they will approve the idea especially since it will carry their name like you posted in the image above. Afterall, they are one of few companies that offer enthusiasts these beasts of machines. Let us know how it goes, eagerly awaiting for this.

PS: Small suggestion although I don't know how feasible it is to implement. You see, I am one of those who were intimidated to use ThrottleStop, Mr. Fox logged in to my system and configured it for me so it ran well with my Skyflake 6700K, but without him, I wouldn't have had a clue. I saved the settings/INI profile and still, without it, I would be clueless.

Maybe, just maybe, if you want to offer Eurocom this TS version, that you can have some sort of preconfiguration that would make it easy for the end-user to select a clock speed(s) and bam they're ready to go. I don't know how feasible is this, just wishful thinking to one of the best utilities out there.

@unclewebb I don't have Skylake and probably will not get KabyLake either, CannonLake maybe. Yes, having your own hardware makes things a lot easier but still the 6600K wouldn't tell you everything about a 6500U or if trying to multiplier unlock the CPU since it's already unlocked. Was hoping to help someone over at TI with unlocking but seems I can not login anymore.

At least we are all on the same page so good advice from you, I'm just going to chill out. :)

P.S. user @Plur was kind enough to submit a test and while no throttling seen for uncore / ring there was a little for core and that shows a change in MSR for SkyLake.

Well, if I ever get something skylake I'll happily test what I could for you. But mobile hotwell works fine for TS, and I have no access to desktop enthusiast hotwell, or anything skylake.

I could probably do a bit of basic testing if you really need it. Ask GTVEVO, I know he is overclocking with TS a lot. I have difficulty getting adaptive voltage to work on skylake. I cant keep my voltage lower then 1.25v for load on 4.4ghz. I know it will be stable at 1.2v since thats what I run with on XTU.

    Hi @Dufus,

I didn't even know you were the developer of the complimentary software that comes with Throttlestop!

    I'm happy to test anything you need. I have a i7-6500U @ 2.5Ghz

Shouldn't it be fairly simple? Just if a shortcut to throttlestop has a target line like "-profile:2" or something, it just does the switch inside throttlestop. It'd be pretty cool though, and appreciated. Otherwise, maybe you could make an "idle" function under AC/Battery profiles where a time for idle can be set and then which profile to use when idle.

Also, did you get around to do a battery test where the computer wasn't totally idling? I don't really know how to automate two similar tests where the laptop is being used. A low resolution movie, maybe? One that doesn't kick the CPU totally out of powersaving. If I idle on desktop, the CPU is typically in 80% C7 but if I use it a bit at same time it's a good mix of C6 and C7 (and the whine, ugh)...

My interrupt reponse is currently 10, as it was by default. I see yours were 12. What difference should some higher values theoretically make? and how can the powersaver c0% be used in this relation? Maybe the power saver option (which is only un-greyed when "multiplier" is checked) useless with these new CPUs? I think I read one of your old posts stating something along those lines, once.

EDIT: Seems like using the interrupt response at 1 is a better way if you want a quiet laptop. But it seems like the value is not always applied? Sometimes I have to move the slider around, press apply then back at 1 and press apply before c3/c6/c7 states are disabled? Like if I have profile one set to 1 and profile two set to 10, changing between them doesn't actually apply the different interrupt response values. I have to do it manually.

That explains why way back when I first tried this method it did eliminate the whine but it kept coming back despite being set to "1".

Thanks for the offer illuzn but I've decided I'm going to wait until I have some hardware to test on myself. Should be able to test Powercut on Broadwell-U in a couple of months to see how well the TDP killing software works.

Hi Unclewebb, firstly thanks for your great piece of software, been using TS 8 for a week now on my old SL 9600 (hp 2530p) - works like a charm - however i cant figure out one small thing - every time I disconnect my charger, TS closes right away and i have to re-open it manually - running on WIN 10 - is this how it is designed to work or maybe a WIN 10 hitch? never had any other version of TS before on my PC so i don't think it could be a version conflict or something. Also, upon system resume the EIST option is checked in the battery profile - i have to uncheck or toggle profiles and it gets back to normal Sorry if someone has already mentioned that before - I am new in town :)

P.S. Finally TS does not close anymore when i unplug the charger - the (likely) Solution: It definitely has something to do with the Power Saver settings - I just pushed back to Power Saver 50 % down from 80 and now TS is still running after i unplug...can.t say if this is the ultimate solution for all that have the same problem, but it worked for me...

    Hello,

I tried to use this app but without success. I gave up. Then I came back as I see 412 pages in thread so it has to be working somehow.

I have i5 2410m processor. Whatever I set up (example multiplier or speedstep) it does do nothing.
I have serious problem with one game - it is demanding for CPU but processor resist to work fully.
I enter the game, play one minute and CPU drops to mostly idle state 0.8 Ghz leaving me with 10 FPS in the game.

Temperature is not an issue as it is maximum 85*C - in Prime95 or other testers I was able to keep steady 2.3 Ghz at 90*C. Here is my thread if someone has any idea: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/how-to-lock-cpu-speed.787600/

Does this app even work for my processor?

I have seen this bug before but I do not have a solution. On my laptop with a Core i processor, I can unplug it and plug it back in and ThrottleStop continues running. When I get a chance I will have a look at this again to see if I can figure anything out. Bugs that I cannot reproduce on my own hardware are difficult to track down.

Having EIST unchecked can cause a problem during Stand By mode. When a Dell laptop with a Core 2 Duo resumes with EIST disabled, it will typically be set to the 6 multiplier by the bios. With EIST disabled, there is no way to get the CPU back up to full speed. EIST has to be momentarily enabled, multiplier has to be set appropriately and then EIST can be disabled again. I think with ThrottleStop, Stand By mode with EIST disabled might only be possible when using profile 1. I have no idea why I originally designed ThrottleStop like this. I think a lot of people automatically disable EIST without really understanding it. I was probably afraid that EIST would get disabled and then people would complain that ThrottleStop was not working correctly. In most other situations, it is rarely necessary to disable EIST. I do not have access to a Core 2 Duo laptop handy so I will probably be leaving this for a while.

On my laptop, the C7 IRL setting works the same whether plugged in or on battery power. I will check to make sure this setting is being properly set when switching profiles or when resuming from stand by. This was an experimental feature but I haven't got much feedback about it. There are more options to adjust C7 IRL as well as separate adjustments for C6 IRL and C3 IRL. For my purposes, adjusting C7 IRL gives me full control of the package C States so I have not added any additional adjustment of this, yet.

@Forssberg - I put a post in the other thread you created. After you post a picture of how you have ThrottleStop setup, I will see if I can figure something out.

It does not seem to be enforced very much - if at all - while plugged in, I've no idea why.. But it is a key function to fix the whine without the added heat that the other methods add. Don't know if you can make the values be force-applied more strongly or something?

I'd love to see other seperate adjustment opportunities as well. Would it be possible to reduce C6 to not being used this way? Since C7 does not omit noise and is a nice power saving function. It is however only used when on battery, I've never seen it used on ac AFAIR.

I'd be happy to beta test or something, I hope you realise that your program is the only reason I still got this godforsaken laptop so your work is truly appreciated.

Thanks for your answer! I was wondering if this is not caused by the modded bios I am using in order to get the DIDA enabled in the first place! However i could not find any similar issues reported on the hp 2530p thread on NTBREW. However that thread is quite obsolete with most of its info dated 5 years back.

Hi mate, thx for your explanation. For now it works great using two profiles. In the first profile I just disable turbo if temp goes over 70 °C. Without turbo the cpu runs at 1600 MHz and it seems that the power consumption stays within the limits even when running on 100% load for a long time.

I took the screenshot you requested.

    Hey TomJGX,

I posted a while ago regarding skylake i76650U that could only keep uo at 25W once cooled with an ice cube even if temperature doesnt go over 80c.
Is there is any tests you would like me to perform to keep this pc/tablet at 25W up to max temperature...

    Let me know.

Ps : I have a surface pro 4 i7 6650U (around pages 398) and the issue might not only be with the processor but with a skin sensor (that cannot be found when looking at ifixit videos...)

    Thanks !

Hi @unclewebb all and Guys helping in this thread,

Maybe U can help me with my problem, I try to find answer for this about week and no luck,
Ive got 4800mq, temps are good about 40degrees ilde and max 70-80 degrees in stress or heavy gaming.

Also OC is good, I can make 4x3.9Ghz with 1,155v or undervolt stock to get max 3.5Ghz on 1.050v.

But my problem is that when I play games I had Turbo Boost for few minutes working, then temps go to abut max 70-80 degrees and I lost Turbo till next system restart,
clock going back to 2.7Ghz and even when CPU is colder only about 60-65 degers turbo don't come back
and when I finish game and start some benchmarks or other stuff Turbo also dont come back.

First I was thinking ok, temp are high (still 70-80 is not so high but ok) and cpu turn off Turbo but when cpu starts to be colder its don't come back,
even when I am on pulpit and cpu is like 40 degrees, I starts some new game or 3dmark, the clock is max stock 2.7Ghz
After system restart Turbo is back again.

Do U got some expirience with losing turbo or blocking turbo?
Is not becouse of temps I think so what?

I've been using ThrottleStop since version 4 with a range of mobile processors. I currently run it as a service (using nssm) with an Intel X9000. I enthusiastically applaud your work and it pleases me that development continues even now. However, there exists an anomaly that prevents me from using any release beyond version 6.00. In subsequent versions, including the latest (8.00 Beta 7), it is impossible to place ThrottleStop in the system tray (or notification area) without it also appearing in the taskbar. Otherwise, you can only run it in a normal window (exclusively in the taskbar) or completely invisible in the background (as with a service). I look forward to fully exploiting new features like timer resolution if/when the desired behavior is restored. I might also point out that the SLFM/SLFM6 state is not preserved when switching profiles. Thank-you for all your efforts.

What laptop model do you have? My Lenovo Y510P disables Turbo Boost soon after the CPU and GPU are both active. Start playing a game and Turbo Boost is disabled. Go back to the desktop and Turbo Boost starts working again. I guess Lenovo hoped no one would notice.

Post a screenshot of how you have ThrottleStop setup. ThrottleStop can be used to completely fix the throttling problem in my Y510P. Depending on what method is used, it might work for your problem too. The trigger is usually power consumption and not temperature. Intel designs their CPUs so they will continue to use full turbo boost right up until they reach the thermal throttling temperature which is usually about 100°C.

Read the ReadMe file that is included with the latest beta release in my signature. If you are having any troubles with the system tray icons, clearing the Windows Icon Cache will usually fix that. As soon as you do that, do not use ThrottleStop 6.00 again. Stick with the newer versions or the icon cache will probably get corrupted again.

I cannot remember how this feature is supposed to work. I have not looked at this code in years. No mobile Core 2 hardware available at the moment but I will have a look at this next time I am doing some ThrottleStop programming.

The same problem I had with my i7-4900mq. The processor was crippled. I run virus scan and the processor throttled down to base clock and stayed there(you should try out the same for your laptop).Turbo boost couldn't start up again. Only after reboot. I think you need a new processor. I couldn't fix the problem. New processor was the only solution for the problem. The best part for me ... A free change to 4930mx. A rare problem. But this can happen.
    Ps.. I have Aw17.

I have Clevo 157, I don't have ThrottleStop, Im using only XTU and I based only on setting from XTU thats why Im thinking to start using TS

I managed some setting in XTU and situation changed a bit.

For now I set Procesor Current Limit to 130.00A and default clocks with undervoltage but with static Core Voltage as 1.055v (its better then offset udervolt... is more stable to set -50mV or -70mv static vcore)
And for now I have in games stable Turbo 3.5Ghz for some while, and after some time its low to default clocks to 2.7Ghz but what is important that turbo Its BACK after pause or go to pulpit and choice next game or benchmark, it not cuts off till next system restarts like before.

So I think that static undervolt or rising CPU Current Limit making that

Like u said it must be somethig with power (TDP) not temperature becousue somethime is cuting Turbo on really low temps.

Is ThrottleStop has something to resolve that?

Thanks for replying so quickly. I understand that you don't profit from this project. My problem is that I DO want it to appear in the system tray, but NOT also in the taskbar at the same time - just the system tray. I have thoroughly reviewed all the documentation, and can reproduce the problem across multiple platforms. In every instance, the behavior first appears after version 6.00. If you're attempts to reproduce it are unsuccessful, I can provide screenshots illustrating the anomaly.
Thank-you. This issue is NOT isolated to Core 2 processors, and I predict it will be a quick fix. Again, screenshots are available if needed.
ThrottleStop's contribution to the community is immense and your continued support uncommonly generous.

I have the problem with the taskbar as well.

When I enable minimize on close or start minimized an icon is correctly placed in my system tray. However, the application icon remains in my task bar as well. It behaves as if it had been closed and is running in the background AND as if you had just minimized a web browser. I have only used the latest version of throttlestop on this fresh windows install.

    Windows 10 X64, latest version.

To follow suit with what Apeek was saying, I just recently switched to throttlestop from XTU. I liked that it uses less resources and gave me control over the IO/System agent voltage.

Thank you very much, your work is much appreciated.

I am running a lenovo product as well (Y700-touch15isk) with skylake 6700HQ. Looking forward to typing up some bug reports :p

Can you double check the main screen to make sure that Task Bar is not checked? This is working 100% correctly for me in Vista, Windows 7, 8 / 8.1 and Windows 10. I think after TS 6.00, this setting was moved from the Option window to the main window so it would be easier to find.

Intel XTU has not fixed this problem for you so I would recommend trying something else.

I already mentioned that on my 4700MQ, ThrottleStop fixes this problem so give it a try and post some screenshots. ThrottleStop has a few controls available that XTU does not.

@apeek @ mikel0181 - Thanks for letting me know that everything is OK. Looks like I oversimplified that option. :)

@Mo&Ma - There are several different ways that Turbo Boost can be disabled. The throttling method that Lenovo uses can be easily fixed by setting the Non Turbo Ratio to 1.

You could also try checking the Set Multiplier option and setting that to the highest value. I am still waiting for you to post a screenshot of how you have ThrottleStop setup. If you are still having problems, use the Dump tool by Dufus so I can have a look to see what values are in the CPU registers. It might show me what throttling method is being used.

Ok I will have some time later to use that Dumb tool, but for now Ive checked what U adviced me with that non turbo ratio.

So I downloaded and run TS, only set that non turbo ratio to 1 and first time I had in game massive throttling to 800Mhz on my cpu :) Not only cut turbo to 2.7Ghz but straight goes to 800Mhz. So that method definetly dont work for my cpu

And also after set that value to 1 even in idle cpu clocks never goes down below 3.4ghz so speedstep dont work propertly too I gues

    Hi everybody,

I have been using ThrottleStop for some time to disable the turbo on my i5-4200U. Thank you a lot for your work, unclewebb!
    I've got a strange problem:
Laptop is a Sony Vaio Flip 13, and has some kind of performance control in the firmware - you can select between "silent", "balanced" and "performance", and CPU power and fan noise will adjust to that. I think internally this is handled by setting various power limits for the package.
Anyway, since a few days ago, as soon as I select "performance", thermal throttling will kick in, and bring CPU and GPU clock to their lowest values. Switch back to another setting, and thermal throttling stops. This is not caused by the CPU or GPU temperature, these stay between 50° and 60° throughout.
Now, the first time I noticed this, Throttlestop was running, but I don't know if that is related or just a coincidence.
What I really want to ask is, has anyone seen this before? Any ideas what is going on? How could Throttlestop help me in finding out what is wrong?

@TheS - I am not familiar with what issues the Sony Vaio Flip 13 has. If a sensor or switch on your motherboard has gone bad, it can send a signal to the CPU and tell it to throttle. Try disabling BD PROCHOT to block these signals and see what happens. I do not own a 4th Gen U CPU so post some screenshots to show me what is going on and so I can see how you have ThrottleStop setup.

I don't know if this is a ThrottleStop bug or an issue with my new computer (Surface Pro 4 / I7-6650 / 16GB), but when I run ThrottleStop, the Chipset modulation always says 87.5% no matter what settings I choose.

I have tried erasing ThrottleStop.ini and rebooting ... but nothing I do budges the the 87.5%. I have verified the chip with the Intel Diagnostics Tool ... but I don't think that covers the chipset.

Any ideas? Should I return the SP4 and get a replacement? I have 4 days to return it to Best Buy! :)

Thanks for any help on this!

    Frank.

Thank you for your help, @Dufus.

It's yellow across the board. I occasionally get a blip on red when I am typing fast in chrome. But if I leave the system alone, it's yellow. Here's what's lit up:

    Uncore: EDP, PL1
    Ring: EDP

Package Power averages about 4W and proc temps are about 37C

I'll try and put a screenshot up.

    PLEASE HELP.

I'm not a compete computer idiot, but I need a little help regarding this program. I'll keep it simple.

    I have a 3 year old laptop CPU = I7-3537U
    It is rated at 2.00GHZ

However, any graphic application almost immediately caused it to throttle to 0.60 GHZ, and it sticks there until a reboot.

ALL I want to know is what boxes need to be ticked to prevent the CPU from throttling down. That's all. I've tried to understand the instruction guide and have watched several complicated videos about it, but I'm still not "getting it" I've tried several options, but none seem to be working.

So, if anyone with knowledge, be it the author or another person, can concisely tell me what options need be ticked/checked to prevent throttling down i would forever be in your debt. Thank you VERY much for any help in advance.

@unclewebb, @Dufus: Thank you for your replies. Firstly, I want to emphasize that my problem occurs whether or not Throttlestop is running; just want to avoid any confusion.
    Now, I've taken some screenshots:

The first one is with performance control set to "balanced". As you can see, the CPU is running at turbo frequency, and there is no throttling. The system was idle while I took these.

The second one is moments later, with performance control set to "performance". PROCHOT is lit up, the CPU is throttled to lowest frequency, however the temperatures I can see aren't an issue (looking at the graph, and Throttlestops "Max" column)

For the third image, I disabled BD PROCHOT. Suddenly, the throttling is over, and both PROCHOT indicators are yellow again....

I reenabled BD PROCHOT afterwards, and the situation went back to the second image.

unclewebb, I assume you also wanted to know what it looks like when I actually use Throttlestop. I just check "Disable Turbo" and/or sometimes "Set Multiplier" to something like 12 (the highest non-turbo is 16). In the past, I also used to click on "Turn On", but just recently learned I don't need to do that.

Now, what is all this telling me? Is there some other temperature sensors somewhere that I haven't found yet which immediately overheats as soon as I go to "performance" mode? What's the best tool for displaying all the temperature sensors I might have?

Chipset clock modulation does not work on the newer CPUs. I disabled this in ThrottleStop for the 6th Gen Skylake CPUs. Looks like I also need to disable this for the 6th Gen Skylake U CPUs like you have. No worries Frank. Your Surface Pro is fine. Ignore the 87.5% number until I get this ThrottleStop bug fixed. Can you post a screenshot of CPU-Z so I know the exact CPUID that I need to disable. Let me know anything else that works or doesn't work.

@TheS - Thanks for all of your screenshots. That makes it so much easier to diagnose your problem. BD PROCHOT stands for bi-directional processor hot. It is a signal path directly to your CPU. Other sensors on your motherboard can send a signal to your CPU which tricks the CPU into thinking it is too hot. It will immediately start thermal throttling which means your CPU will be stuck at the lowest multiplier which is 8. When you disable BD PROCHOT, this blocks and prevents these signals from getting to your CPU. Problem solved. I have no idea why this only happens when you switch to Performance mode. In the Windows Power Options you could try making sure that your power profiles are set to their default settings. Click on the Restore plan defaults button. This is either a Windows bug or a bad sensor on your motherboard. A sensor on the voltage regulator seems to be the most frequent cause.

I wish your problem was that easy to fix. The 3rd Generation U CPUs can start throttling and there is nothing that ThrottleStop can do about it. Dufus is working on a tool that might be able to help but it has not been tested yet.

Does ThrottleStop show 0.6 GHz or did you see that number in the Task Manager? They usually get stuck at 798 MHz (8 X 99.77 MHz)

Intel's low power 3rd Gen CPUs are not designed to run continuously at their full rated speed. They were designed to throttle. Click on the TPL button. On the right hand side it shows the TDP Level limits. What is happening is your CPU is going into the low TDP power limit where the multiplier gets locked to 8. Below that, ThrottleStop has an option to lock the CPU into a high TDP power level to try and avoid this throttling. The problem is that ThrottleStop can only access the register in the CPU. There is a second duplicate register that ThrottleStop cannot access. You might be able to use RW Everything to access this second register but it is also possible that this second register is locked. If that is the case then you might have to start searching the net for a cracked bios which is probably not available for your laptop. This is why the 3rd Gen U series are not on my things to buy list. Individual manufacturers have more control than ThrottleStop does. With the 4th and 5th Gen U CPUs, you can undervolt them and reduce power consumption but this option is not available in the 3rd Gen.

One possible solution is running your CPU at a reduced speed so as to avoid it going into low TDP mode. Using Disable Turbo or setting the Non Turbo Ratio to 0 and then seeing if the Set Multiplier option works might allow you to lower the CPU power consumption a little to prevent it from jumping over the cliff into low TDP mode. Click on Turn On and take ThrottleStop out of Monitoring mode when adjusting the Set Multiplier value.

Every manufacturer sets different lock options in the bios. Post some screenshots for more help. I need to see what options are available and how you have ThrottleStop setup.

Throttlestop always shows a higher speed than the task manager. Taskmanager shows 0.6 GHZ throttlestop does says 798.

No problem with the screenshots, thanks for your time :)
I'm a little hesitant to disable BD PROCHOT. Isn't it possible that there is actually something wrong (not just a bad sensor), and that operating at the full TDP would actually break something? Or that at some point something else might try to send a legitimate PROCHOT? Power profiles are at their defaults, by the way, and the same behaviour can be seen under Linux, so it (unfortunately) isn't a Windows bug.

I will upload some screenshots tomorrow. It might be my imagination, but it seems that disabling "BD PROCCHOT" reduces the amount of throttling.

If your CPU gets too hot, whether BD PROCHOT is enabled or not, your CPU will throttle to protect itself. Disabling BD PROCHOT only blocks throttling signals outside of the processor.

I understand that you are hesitant but what are your options? Most techs have no idea what BD PROCHOT is all about so good luck trying to convince a call center that you need the motherboard replaced. It might be a long uphill battle. Your laptop is already broken so personally, I would not worry about breaking it.

@MikeBaxter - Maybe you got lucky. Controlling TDP Level can be a dead end but toggling BD PROCHOT off is simple. This BD PROCHOT stuff is a more common problem than most consumers realize. It can make a night and day difference to performance and so far, no one has contacted me or come back here and reported any problems after disabling this.

@FrankF - I will add Skylake U (CPUID 406E3) to the list of CPUs that do not use Chipset Clock Modulation. My access to a wide variety of hardware is limited. User feedback improves ThrottleStop without having to spend my own money.

Not sure if disabling it has "solved" the problem, but since disabling it have not seen the speed drop below 1.5 ghz. Before, it was locking at 0.6ghz every tim. I will still post some SS tomorrow, and i appreciate all your help

Thanks @Dufus for the new tool and thanks for the heads up. Seems like a good idea to put a hyper threaded quad core 47 Watt CPU in a tablet. Vaio Z owners will be lurking around this forum shortly.

Edit - Avast complained about DufusDump so I disabled it, downloaded DufusDump, ran it, and all is fine.

    http://i.imgur.com/4s0bH97.png

51 out of 54 antivirus programs seem OK with it. Every time I make a minor change or add a new feature, Avast usually complains about ThrottleStop too.

@Kocane - I haven't forgotten about the C States. I am planning a redesign to better control C3/C6/C7 but this takes time. Global warming is killing ThrottleStop. It looks too nice out today to get any meaningful work done. :)

    Welcome.

I'm throwing the towel in on PowerCut, other than ryzeki haven't found any testers. If you want to try it let me know and I'll PM it. If not, no worries.
