interesting that t8xxx are sold at quite reasonable prices. Might they actually be t9xxx with failed on testing half of the cache? And slightly underclocked then...

    just curious...

When you say failed? Hmm sure maybe. They definitely cripple them as it is cheaper than producing different silicon and allows controlled supply vs waiting for failures. PDC are the same way.

hummmm... then just wondering, could those unusual 5870, 5670 etc. be of the same sort (like failed 7xxx)? It would explain a lot, especially why it is not possible to buy them separately.... Guess Intel makes a good use of everyrthing moneywise)))

That is correct, Intel makes good use of everything. And yes if there were zero failures we would likely not have the amount of variaty we have.

And yes it could be possible some of these OEM models are because they have failures they want to dump but don't want to cripple to many they can sell as other to meet demand. So limit availability and the cost/profit equation is more favorable.

Yes they are, and I have just started thinking after running the numbers on a few threads, T8300 is the sweet spot not T9300 as I thought. More than 3MB L2 only shows slight improvement in a few apps and almost nothing in most. 10% is slight, 5% is nothing. And in others it shows zero. Sure I want the best but I do have a budget.

I agree with you guys but for some reason Dell was offering the T9300 for LESS than the T8300 for several weeks a while back so it seemed stupid not the go for it.

Must have had a bad batch to ditch for cheap, eh? ;)

I saw that, and let me make it clear. If anyone ever wants to sell me a T9300 for less than a T8300, I will take it. Why it happened? Who knows? Maybe they were behind at crippling chips at Intel? My brother bought a DeLL years ago, Extreme was $500 extra, so he did not get. When they sent it, Extreme. Must of had more of those on hand.

The difference between a T7250 or T7300 and T8100/T8300 is really evident in terms of performance and battery usage (In both case the graphic card is integrated) ?

I use the notebook for office/programming applications only.

    From the guide:

Since Intel decided to release 20 gagillion CPUs, you can change the "3 or 4" to "6 or 7".

I want to upgrade my sony vaio's CPU. Here are the specs:

    Model: VGNC-21GH/W
    Motherboard: chipset Intel 945GM
CPU: Intel Pentium T2060 Dual Core 1.60Ghhz (Dual Core Xeon "Sossaman" procressor, Socket 479)
    HDD: 80gig 5400 sata
    RAM: 2x1gig DDR2 667

So the CPU is only a dual core not a Core 2 Duo.

So I was wondering if an upgrade to a Core 2 Duo T7500 is possible? From what I know, it's a socket 479 also? What's the most powerful CPU that I can upgrade to?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Montevina platform (2008)

The code-name Montevina refers to the fifth-generation Centrino platform, now formally named Centrino 2 to avoid confusion with previous Centrino platforms. It was scheduled for release at Computex Taipei 2008, which took place on June 3 - 7, 2008,[5] but has been delayed until July 14, due to problems with integrated graphics and wireless certification.[6] Montevina will support Penryn, Intel's 45nm die-shrink version of Core 2 processors.

    - Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrino#Montevina_platform_.282008.29)

I'm looking to buy a laptop, so how long would it be until Montevina is available in mass production?

One of the stickers was a Centrino sticker and the other was a Core 2 Duo sticker. And no, they don't matter. I don't know why stickers would ever matter.

I've seen different sticker on basically the same laptop, just different serial #.

I guess resellers just grab a handful of stickers from one bag then a handful from another and mix them up for no apparent reasons.
    Stickers suck anyway.

and i m pretty pissed that my HDX came with the pink centrino sticker instead of the Blue Core 2 Duo one..but that mainly cuz where i live people are very dumb and if sometime in the future if i post an ad in the newspaper abt selling my lappy, (i cant sell over the net) people will say oh its a Centrino, arent Centrinos crap? i heard Core 2 duos are better even Pentium 4 is better than Centrino

PS: i aint kidding, stickers are darn important here

I'm definately pissed at my stickers. I've currently got 5 stickers, a pink Intel Centrino (not that bad, but I would've preferred the standard Core 2 Duo sticker in Blue), the "Graphics by nVidia" sticker, the plain white Vista sticker (I wanted the one in the photo that Purehazzard attached), an "Energy Star" sticker and a Lightscribe sticker made of PAPER.

You probably got the Centrino Stickers because your laptop has all the intel components which enable it to classed as a Centrino (chipset, processor, wireless). You only get the actual Core2Duo stickers if it doesnt.

They can be bought of eBay very cheap if you like the stickers!

And you're complaining? Stickers look hideous. Especially the A8Js ones. First thing I did was remove them. And the good thing now is that the colour underneath the stickers aren't any different from the plastic around it.

Thanks for your views, angad, the upgrade is about Rs 2,262/- which is about $60 US.
It goes from 2 MB cache to 3 MB, and 667MHz FSB to 800MHz but the speed of 2.16GHz is the same on both. I don't really know how much games rely on the cpu, at the start of this thread Lithus points out that most games are more dependent on the gpu than cpu, so I don't want to fork out the extra if there's no appreciable difference.
Basically you don't think it's worth it?

Possibly depending on the laptop. A lot of CPUs are actually buried deep in the laptop or are permanently bound to the motherboard.

No. Even though it is referred to as S1, Puma is actually S1g2. Another pin slot has been added for the advanced power features of the new cpus.

However, an older S1 cpu will work in a S1g2 socket.........

Knightendo you could have some upgrade options. If your model was offered with dual core options you likely could put up to Turion TL-60 or Athlon ("Tyler" same TDP) or Semperon ("Sable"). Because BIOS and MoBo likely could support (BIOS update if need be).
Most Intel CPU's on standard notebooks are not solderd to the MoBo. Dash I looked up 2390 on Intel looks like none are Micro-FCBGA (soldered) all are Micro-FCPGA (pins, snaps in snaps out) as a matter of fact all PDC are Micro-FCPGA. Some have upgraded to the 800Mhz FSB socket P C2D CPU's with out a problem.
