Yeah, it seems like it's just HDTune. I ran ATTO and those results turned out to be pretty normal. Definitely strange... I don't know if it's something to worry about, though. I haven't really felt any noticeable change in performance.

Cool! Can't wait to see how the 30gb does agaisn't the X25-E. I know the X25-E is still better, but for the difference in price it might be a great deal.

I was looking to get the 30gb or 60gb, but it sounds like those versions don't get as much performance. :(

It also appears they *might* be eligible for a 15-30 day refund privilege, too. At least they are not listed as a refund excluded item. I'd call first to verify, tho.

I've always gotten excellent cust svc (incl RMA) from ZZF.

Take that Tom's Hardware claim with a grain of salt. 240 MB/s sequential writes? Who's arse did they pull that one out of?

I hate to say it... but probably Vertex. If that last review of Vertex was to be believed, the random writes of the Vertex are going to pwn those of the Samsung. Sequential speeds are probably relative close, too.

Based on recently released benchmark numbers from both cdfreaks and various users, you're still preferring the X25-M over the Vertex CW?

In light of the problems that're beginning to "plague" the Intel, it's definitely becoming harder to give it my full support, but as of now I'd still say it's the better drive. Maybe not by that much, but still by a significant amount; Intel's still the best thing you can get in terms of random writes/IO performance.

That being said, I was originally planning to go all Intels (that would be three of them) as part of the "master plan" (laptop, desktop, server), but I'm thinking of going for 100/80 SLC or 90/70 MLC Samsungs instead, depending on how either drive holds up in the mid to long term. As much as I'd like to have that monster Intel IO, the Samsung(s) still seem to be the most problem free drives, even if they aren't the fastest or cheapest or whatever.

So I still consider the Intel to be the best overall drive, but I'm looking for Samsungs? Maybe that's kind of hypocritical?

EDIT: The current T, X, R, and SL series should all support SATA2? It's just the 60 series that doesn't?

Yes, I think all Thinkpads do aside from the T60 and T61.

    http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=T_Series_Thinkpads&message.id=29776

I wouldn't call it hypocritical since you are on the lookout for reliability. If Intel ever releases a fix for the speed degradation I bet you'd switch your preference asap. :)

should I use HDDErase 3.3 on the drive before I install xp recovery?

Partition alignment probably won't do too much for the X25-M, but I'm sure it doesn't hurt. No need to fully erase the disk either. AFAIK the Intel should be fine without any tweaks; it's just the simple JMicrons that really need it.

guys, my laptop just started to do some serious freezings
    I'm using d620 with samsungs 64gb slc on windows 7 build 7000
did some tweaks from ocz forum, everything worked fine, and now, it starts to hangs for a few seconds, and it irritates BIG TIME...
most of the time it happens if i run my portable mozilla firefox 2.0.0.20, and, mozilla stops responding, but other than that, I can click on start button, it will pop up start window, but little slower than usual
do you guys think this is mozilla problem or my samy started to stutter :(

edit: maybe a mozilla thing ?
just started the upgrade to 3.0.15 version...
maybe the whole w7 beta thing ?
    who knows...

    edit2:
I just passed few benchmarks, and the all say that my samsung is a bit FASTER than the first time I run them...
    hmh...

Torrenting is one thing on which I haven't done any long-term SSD tests. I do a lot of it too, but all of it is directed to my file server which stlll uses a traditional HDD, as my university is kind of strict about IP, etc.

It really is hard to say if it'll be a problem. Get an SLC for best results?

Is it just Win 7? Maybe you've got some rogue processes (I dunno, due to immature drivers?), and it's not actually the SSD?

That pcper podcast said that basicly the steady state for everyones' use is different depending on what you do to the drive. If you make a lot of large file writes (aka at least bigger than the block size) than the better your performance will be in steady state. the more small/random writes you have, the worse your drive will be at its steady state. the reason being the larger the files you consistantly the more sequentials it will have when rewriting its algarythms (who needs spelling...). and the opposite is the case with lots of fragmentation/random writes because it has all the more work to do gathering the data it must shift for wear leveling. from what i hear, firefox and bit torenting are tons of random writes. so you fragmenting the drive up pretty hardcore if your doing a lot of that stuff and it's causing a lot of work for the drive to jump all over for the data and cell leveling.

A small ssd update for the macbook range - there's now a 256GB option in addition to the 128GB one that was already there. Prices range from $750-$900.

Price for the 128GB on the standard macbook Aluminium is $450. Question - was this always the price or did it go down today?

I saw these on eBay looking for Samsung drives (at least the auctions I looked at had the same picture with the same tacky SSD logo). I asked the buyer about them and he basically said that they were generic, simple JMicron drives. Kinda like the cheap Chinese power supplies you can buy.

Interesting...first SSD I've seen available from a "direct from China" etailer.

But the cost is $192 USD for an unbranded drive of unknown performance with unknown support...for that money there are plenty of branded options with known performance and good support and warranty.

Interesting - I had freezing issues with 64GB SLCs from Samsung with 32-bit Vista and Intel's AHCI driver. This was on GM45/ICH9M chipset.

Basically, almost every time you throw a huge load of files to the drive, it completely stalls - in some cases, it recovers after some time (can be more than a minute) but in worst cases it completely halts the system.

No problems were found with Microsoft's AHCI driver, but the drive was quite slower then (ATTO)

Once I switched to Windows 7 64-bit and Intel's 64-bit AHCI driver, problems are gone...

Weird - what driver are you using?

Btw, I'm gonna replace one 64GB SLC Samsung with X25-E tomorrow - and I am thinking to swap other Samsung 64GB with my desktop's 128GB MLC Samsung, as it looks very similar performance-wise to the 64GB SLC model (ATTO, did not check iometer with MLC one yet) but has two times more space.

think this is not a stutter thing, think this is a beta stuff issue...

but the good deal is I got 256G Samsung SSD for $620...

Yea, I did... I did on Friday night, and I didnt get the order confirmation from DELL until today.
I personally called DELL on Sunday about my order, and the lady told me I could not order the Drive sererately from the laptop. So I assumed my order process was not passed thought its system. So I did another order on OCZ vertex 120G from Amazon.
For some unknown reasons, my order on samsung ssd got approved today, so i end up getting two SSDs.

Right now I am thinking to selll my current Intel X25-M when I actually get the Samsung SSD.

No, it's OS specific. Vista 64-bit AHCI drivers from Intel are for that OS only.

    Intel's Vista x64 driver works perfectly with W7/Server 2008 R2 (Win 7 Server)

Nothing really changed in that aspect of Windows 7 Kernel that would require any change to the driver - everything is 100% binary compatible.

Looks like something was very wrong on ICH9M + Intel 32-bit AHCI Driver + Samsung 64GB SLC SSD (SATA-II gen, last SLCs they released)

    From that article:

LOL...it was so recently that $1,500 was the cost of entry for a single SSD of only 3% the capacity and with read/write speeds that were about on par with HDD.

Did anyone figure out how to move Windows from an HDD to a SSD without Acronis (i.e. without destroying the custom partition allocation)?
An added difficulty is that the target disk/partition is often much smaller.

    Any guides out there?

I proposed quite a few pages back to simply mount the two disk into another computer, show all hidden and system files, and just copy paste the content from one partition to another. You may run into some ownership issues with certain files, and solving those problems is another story, not complicated, but could be somewhat tedious.

There have already been several PCIe products such as Fusion IO, Gigabyte, etc. You can't boot from it yet but apparently Fusion IO is working on a solution.
