I was merely saying that you are just making up stuff as always, and I'm not interested in your stuff as always.

And if you see "misinformation" in this thread, the you can complain to ...well...geez..dunno...whoever you want.

Desktop cards are a lot easier to upgrade :D in fact a Laptop will be more likely to break down before you feel the need to upgrade the graphics....by then you will buy another laptop.

You didnt list it, but it is a new model-the HP dv9700t >> I belive the HP Rep said that the 8600M in it was deticated. It is a 17" here are the dimensions (), so do you think that with the 17" case and a deticted card, will it be possible? Thanks

For Dell Vostro 1500, what other card can you stuff in there that's better than the 8600M GT?

None. The DDR2 8600M GT is the fastest available.

There is a slight chance that the GDDR3 8600M GT from the XPS m1530 will work, but I wouldn't count on it.

None. Not until Dell releases a more powerful card in the same form factor, which they won't. Maybe the GDDR3 8600GT from the XPS M1530, but even that isn't worth the upgrade price.

EDIT: Dammit, Fara beat me to it.

In the HP (pavillion) the card is dedicated (meaning it has it's own dedicated ram and isn't part of the motherboard), but it's soldered on. Meaning no upgrades.

Even if it wasn't soldered, you wouldn't be able to upgrade.

First of all, most Notebook don't have their own bios. Instead it's part of the Main bios. So the support for the new card must exist there.

Secondly, The formfactor. Each manufacturer uses their own formfactor. Sometimes even the same manufacturer uses different formfactors for different laptops. So the cards won't fit. If you're lucky enough too find something MXM (and not just looks like MXM), there's still no guarantee it'll work.

I am investigating the possibility of upgrading an HP Pavilion dv9535 from Intel X3100 to Nvidia 8600M GS.

I know that an MXM upgrade is not possible (this is not an MXM laptop), but would it be possible to do it by upgrading the motherboard from HP Part # 447984-001 "System Board with UMA video system memory" to HP Part # 447983-001 "System Board with 256 MB of video system memory for use with computer models with discrete video system memory" and HP Part # 448016-001 "Heat sink/fan assembly"?

This occurred to me after looking at the HP dv9500 Maintenance and Service Guide at HP dv9500 Support

Great thread, BTW...excellent info compiled in one place.

    Thanks in advance,

That's the best you can get. Though, techinically, you could get a go7900gs fitting a e1705. Not recomended though, as the cooling system on the e1505 is not up to snuff.

Most likely not, I just looked over the m1530's service manual and there isn't a way to remove the graphic assembly like you can with Vostro 1500. Either that or I must have missed it.

    hey

I have an alienware area51m 7700 so from my endless searching i think the go 7950gtx 512 mb is the biggest and best card my system can support. Is that right?

Also I know everyone keeps asking but just in case theres been a leak of info :) does anyone know where to get this card with the heat sink needed for the 7700. I think they must be bought together as one unit.

Also does anyone know if my laptop can support 8gb of ram, like 4x2gb ram sticks? If not why not?
I know the max is 4gb on alienware site but just checking in case its possible.

Also is max hard drive capacity for my system 500 gb?

    thanks a lot.

Hey guys, I've got an Asus A8Jp w/ ATi Mobility x1700. Can I upgrade? I knda understand the MXM stuff, but I don't want to remove my heatsink/fan. Can anyone tell by the pic if I have MXM? If so what is the best card I should go for? Can I put and nvidia card in there?

Correction, I did find this while searching for MXM cards. It does in fact have future promise for upgrade. If MXM is the form factor, then say the 8800M GTX that comes in some Alienware's should work right?

There are instructions for replacing the graphics card in this manual.

First of all, this place ftw. It's been a resource for me throughout this HORRIBLE 2 week mission to find a decent gaming lappy for <900.

So I finally figured out to buy a Dell Vostro 1500, and to upgrade the graphics at a later time. I was wondering 2 things:

There are a lot of Geforce 8600GT's around, which one is the one that will fit in the Vostro 1500? Or does it not matter?

Could I possibly upgrade to a 512MB 8600 when I am ready, or can I only go with the 256?

You can only get the cards that Dell offers. They use a Dell-specific design, so a general off-the-shelf 8600 isn't going to work.

    And aren't all 512's GDDR2 so what's the point? GDDR3 w/256 is better. 128bit bus and all.

    I didn't know it was 256 DDR3, my bad.

Where can I find the one Dell uses? Dell lists it as 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8600M GT (copy and paste ftw), but I haven't been able to find the card itself, just laptops with the card already in it. D=

 DREAMER really was dreaming when he stated on page 1 that:

    C. Upgrading a dedicated card is almost IMPOSSIBLE

AND expected people to actually read it. :D

Perhaps Kildaman has a DV with a dead gpu and needs HP to replace his motherboard?

You might want to compare it directly with the F8 series dedicated cards, as the F8 was a redesign of the A8 series. From the pictures I've seen it looks to be very similar. But still it might not be POSSIBLE due to hardware restrictions such as BIOS and cooling devices.

If you have a Xpresscard slot, they do have wierd cases that you can plug a GPU into, but the Xpresscard slot is only a Pci-e 1x slot... So twice as fast as PCI but that's 266MBps, not the Multi-GBps of 8x and 16x slots.

i have dell inspiron 1520 with integrated GMA x3100

is it possible to add/replace/upgrade it with dedicated graphics card like nvidia
or ati in anyway ? plz if somebody knows tell me about this.

also tell if it is possible to change the graphics card by first changing the main board i.e. intel 965 chipset and if yes how ?

how much would the intel mobile 965 cost in Indian rupees ?

i have read the main post, but i dont know whether it's updated or not
