I'd say that there is little chance for you to upgrade your card... Despite the fact that your laptop is quite old (gf 5700 is three generations back if you check the market today) it's an acer. As far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong, Ice-Tea) there have been no acers whatsoever with an interface (MXM) that lets you upgrade the video card, until the new Aspire 5920. My preivous laptop was an acer, and I actually checked myself if the GPU could be upgraded. What I found, was a motherboard that looked like it had two chipsets, where one was the x700 GPU.
I'd say that you should opt for a new laptop, especially if you're editing hi-def materials. I tried editing 720p on my long-gone acer aspire 1690WLMI with 1GB RAM, 2,0 GHz Pentium M and an ati x700 card... Not possible. Sorry.

First, thanks for the great introduction. I read regularly the whole place and I'm very pleased from the information most of you give me. Thanks for that. Now on the question - I have FCS - Amilo Pi 1556 with Core2Duo T5500, 2 GB Ram and Go 7600 with 256 MB Ram. Right now, i didn't have any problem playing the latest games on 1280x800 (medium or high details), but i know that this will not going to last much longer with the August release of Bioshock and later Gears of War PC, Crysis and more. My GeForce Go 7600 is MXM2 based, so, from what i read i should upgrade my notebook (i hope i can change my cpu too). Can some of you guys with a lot of knowledge tell me if a have any chance to make upgrade (CPU, GPU) or i should stick with my current configuration.
Thanks in advance and regards from Bulgaria. -
Hey, I read the posted replies and stuff but I didnt really understand them. So I have a question. I have an hp dv9580, nVidia geforce 8600 Up to 1023 MB total graphics memory with 256 MB dedicated. Will I be able to change it in the future.

So Dell offered the x1400 and the Go 7900 GS in the E1705. They never offered the Go 7900 GS in the e1505 - but anyone know if it would fit in the 1505? I wouldn't think they would build two different form factors of the x1400 - and by my logic that would mean that the 7900 GS would also likely be similar in form factor. According to the tech guy I chatted with (their offshore tech support is lacking in my opinion) the only real reason the 7900 wasn't offered in the 1505 is to push people to the next upgrade (i.e. the 1705). Can anyone confirm that the 7900 gs would fit in a 1505? If not can anyone give specifics of why it won't? I am just about to give up - I like the 1505 a lot, but the video is the one thing lacking - and now they offer the better 8400 (or 8300?) nVidia cards in their new 1520s....not six months after getting my 1505.
Hoping to hear good news! Thanks a bunch - just joined to post my first post and this is by far the best notebook forum I have ever found. -
-
Thanks - so there is nothing I could do to effectively/safely run that 7900gs in a 1505? Sounds like I am at the top of the food chain on that laptop which SUCKS. It was "oversold" to me as a more proficient video card by my Dell sales agent. Been complaining since about the end of week 1 of having the laptop about performance...hoping to get some sort of service out of them (I would've shipped it back and upgraded on day six if they had offered it but my sales guy was a punk). Have chat logs and one-to-one emails back and forth with technicians and my sales guy over the last six months about my frustration with this system.
-
This info is great but also disappointing for laptop owners...especially me ..who bought a new laptop with 6100....now i ll have to upgrade the RAM so i can atleast play some decent games.
-
Here, I'll lie and be less disappointing: your 6100 can be upgraded to a 26 billion.

So, I read the whole Thread and still have a question to ask. I'm upgrading everything in my E1705. I did the 100 to 250 HD, T2500 to T7600 CPU, and ordered 3GB of G.Skill DDR2 667 (PC2 5300). So now I need to swap the Go 7800 vanilla. It's between the 7900 GS 256 and the 7950 GTX 512. I've heard the 7950 GTX is a possible choice with a bit of fit modding. And, I know I will need to order a 130W PSU too, to handle the load. I'm just concerned about heat... the 7950 GTX may be a bit too hot for this model. What's the popular opinion on this?

The Outbreak: Intel SLI Edition is a notebook that is the so called desktop replacement that has upgradable PCI graphics. It cost a lot too. The starting price is $3,873.70 and thats with out the high end parts. The link is http://www.biohazardcomputers.us/store.php?crn=188&rn=364&action=show_detail
-
That's a Clevo D900C. It can be found for cheaper than that.
-
From where? Because biohazard wants an arm and a leg for it. Got any links?
-
Check out the Clevo Guide - F.A.Q. and Reseller Info. We have a whole subforum for clevos.
-
Wow. Thanks a lot. I had no idea that was the name to it. Biohazard gave it a whole knew name so I had trouble finding it cheap.
-
No problem mate.
-
Yea, rjtech has it for a good $500 cheaper. Thats with most top of the line parts included and thats still cheaper than biohazard sells the bare notebook! Thats a crazy difference! I might actually get this one from rjtech. You can't beat upgradable pci graphics in a notebook.
-
Just so you know, it's not the same graphics cards as on the desktop. Upgrading might void your warranty, is hit and miss at times, is quite expensive, the selection is scarce and parts are rare.
-
Yea, I kind of figure getting your hands on any new hardware will be a task. But having a mobile game system you can take any where is a plus. In the end it can end up costing more then some top of the line desktops. I'm happy with my Vaio for now.

Yea it does come with a Go7950GTX 512MB. I was just looking at one of those earlier.
-
Chaz- Yeah, that's what everyone says... if the M1710 can do then the E1705 should be able as well. I just don't want to make a toaster that burns GPU's. I've done some research on it and I still feel 50/50 about it. Thanks for the replies.
-
However, do some research about that, and even ask in that forum. -
Thanks Dreamer! I had that one booked marked. I think I'll take a risk and grab a 7950 GTX a soon as I can. I will probably buy a Laptop Cooling Pad just for a bit more air (not much help). I also saw some mods like this: http://www.guruofgaming.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=6 (noting that this is not the same card that goes in the E1705). Might give that a try as well.
-
sorry for posting even after reading the starter, but i would like my query be sorted out personally
, desperation.
well, i recently bought hp 6500t lappy with 8400gs 128 mb dedi card.
i would have wished to have 8600 gt any day, but effing hp doesnt offer that card.
is it, by any chance possible for me to upgrade to a better gfx card? -
No, sorry, it's absolutely impossible.

Dreamer, could you add the XPS M170, the XPS M1730, and the Precision M60 to the list of Dell computers with removable/upgradeable video adapters?
Also, you should probably rewrite your external graphics section, as an external graphics card is not technically impossible, and is in fact available for some notebooks. -
I got a vostro 1700 with the g force 8600 gt and i want to upgrade it ! where I can buy another card and do you know a model ???

Just wondering, I know the graphics cards in dell's are removable (and thus upgradeable if you can find a better card that fits your laptop), but how far does this extend?
For example, by the time the 9600M GT (or whatever it will be called) is released, I assume dell will have a new notebook out to replace the Inspiron 1520. However, if they are the same size, would be graphics cards be compatible? (so could I take a card from this theoretical new model, and put it in the older Inspiron 1520).
(or put it another way, if older dell's have removable graphics cards (not sure if they do), can you put say a 8600M GT from the inspiron 1520 into the older notebook?
I'm assuming not, but worth a try lol. (also, if as I suspect you can't, what's stopping you - size??). -
ok so I can't go with the one that came with the XPS 17'' ?
-
upgrading video cards in laptops will get POSSIBLE !
All thanks the Asus XG station
http://www.asus.com/news_show.aspx?id=5369
If you ask me the BEST invention for notebooks
I have also read that asus will make an XG station with SLI ^^ -
If you want to talk about the Asus XG station, then do it here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=96263
And thanks for the newsflash...
-
whats happening with the XG anyway. Last time i heard it only took a 7600GT, needed an external monitor and had bandwidth issue. Is it through the express card slot?
-
Check out the last pages of the thread I linked to above and keep the discussion about that there...
-
hi guys
I got a vostro 1500 with the g force 8400m gs and i want to upgrade it !
its possible?
and there can buy ??
thanks -
Yes, it's possible, but you should contact Dell and see if they would sell you the 8600M GT card for this notebook right now...
-
thank you so much !!
-
Actually Dreamer, the Advanced Dock for Thinkpad's can indeed house an external graphics card, which can be used for gaming. IIRC the bandwith limitation makes any card faster than an X1650XT or so pointless, but it's still worth noting that it's not at all impossible.
-
The Asus XG station has been 'rumored' to be released soon...since this time two years ago. So I highly doubt it is ever going to be released.
-
Plus, there are other external video card options as well, you may want to do some research about that.
Now, you can write your own thread, if you want to recommend these external cards to people, I'm sure that many people will be happy to hear your "news". -
Somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.
