If you are referring to the AMD Athlon 64 X2 5050e Brisbane 2.6GHz : Then Yes you can. Its only like $7 more from the 4850e.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103298

There's a link to it. It a better choice since A) its a 45 watt processor and B) its an AM2 slot fitter which removes the need to replace the motherboard. Other than all that this whole forum will essentially work the same. Hope this helps.

The original power supply can't really handle anything but the low power 4850e or 5050e take a look at this post:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=336445

I have installed the 4850e using thermal paste and so far everything has been normal (except battery life has dropped quite a bit). If it weren't for the price I would also replace the hard drive with a low power consumption model also. The original hard drive gets really hot sometimes.

As for the ram is the PC6400 800Mhz improving performance any and actually running at 800mhz? Or is it just switching back to 667MHz mode?

Momosgarage when you say your battery life dropped quite a bit what exactly does this mean time wise? I am about ready to install the 4850E and would be interested in knowing how long the battery will last with the new processor. Thanks

On the other thread, which I put a link for in this post, it seems that the stock 6 cell is getting about 1hr and 10 mins. I am getting the same at high performance settings in Vista with the 4850e. I would also say to go ahead and get the 5050e, because it looks like as long as you are using a processor of 45 watts or less everything will run cool. Its really the stock hard drive thats heating the whole thing up the most.

Big thanks to Fperez and momosgarage for all of your assistance! Got the 4850e in and running so far without a problem. With all of your help was able to do it all in about 30 minutes time.....Will continue to track this thread to see if there are any more other mods that come about. A few pages back you asked if this motherboard had the capability to add PCMCIA and SD card reader to the motherboard? Did you ever get an answer? Just wondering due to other commitments I was only able to switch out the processor and not really poke around under the hood. Thanks again for everyones help....

No answers yet. In order to find out someone will have to do a full disassembly of the emd620-5777 and also have some salvaged parts from the Acer Extensa 4420 line. I was also thinking since the x1250 is listed as HDCP 1.1 compliant that maybe a HD-DVD or Blue-Ray ROM could be installed. But these questions are still unanswered.

    Sorry to drag this question:

I put in 4gb of Ram in my d620. Vista reads all 4 gb when I go to control panel and then system.

Does the d620 really use all 4gb or should I just upgrade to 2gb. Not trying to waste money and keep 4gb if the computer does not use it, thanks.

The ATI x1250 uses some of the 4GB of system ram, so I don't think you are losing anything by putting in the max amount.

    Any other ideas?

How about about installing an HD-DVD drives or Blu-ray drive? The ATI x1250 is HDCP 1.1 compliant.

What about installing a 9350e triple core which runs at 65 watts?

I just tried 4Gb of PC2-6400 in the emd620-5777 and it does not improve ram performance on the Vista Index Score. So it looks like 4GB of PC2-5300 is good enough. It however is recognized and does boot, it just will not run at full speed.

well, i just got the emachines D620 from a relitive and and hoping that the experiemtns havnt stopped. some questions for the experimenters: so what would be the overal cost of the thermal stuff/pads, processor and other parts? all i want to do is upgrade the processor. also, whats the difference between thermal paste and thermal pads? witch should i use? could u suggest a brand? or a link to newegg or something? also, 54-58 c seems pretty high! whats the average/normal temp for the computer without the upgrade ? how about the life span of the computer? i know that heat can kill a computer, so how much does it shorten the life span of the machine? im pretty sure that all these upgrades void the warranty right? also is there any possibility of upgrading the graphics card? :D

If I remember the processor cost me about 60 bucks from newegg. No luck on the graphics card. If your worried about a warranty then you should probably not perform the upgrade.

    Cost without taxes included:
    $299 laptop alone
    $65-$35 rebate = $30 for 4gb Crucial DDR2 PC5300 (I did get the $35 rebate)
    $60 AMD 4850e processor

    $389 + $30 CA taxes = $419

This is really cheap for a laptop. Also, if I found a 7200rpm/32mb cache notebook hard drive for under $80 (happens sometimes at FRY's) The whole thing would be $500. Still very cheap for a laptop of this type of laptop. A decent netbook these days is $400 or less.

I was lucky $48 @newegg.com this was for a bare OEM processor, also the memory, again newegg was $40 for 4gb. free shipping. Themal pads were $1.50 each @Sidewinder Computers. GOOGLE all sights to find them.
I recommend the use of thermal pads for laptops. I live in the north and due to extreme temp differences and the mobility of laptops there can be a 80degree difference between the house and the car in the winter. Also let it warm to room temp if you come in from below zero to the indoors. Even the best thermal paste can break down under these circumstances.
48-58c on a laptop is not bad at all. Keeping it clean and handling your laptop carefully will make it last.

Hello, I just bought this system, actually the emd620-T1 which is the Japanese version of the 5777 i believe. I upgraded the ram to 4 gb, and now it is pretty quick, but I want to be able to play Youtube HD videos.

If I upgrade to one of the 45w processors, will Youtube HD videos play without any stutter?

Is there still no word on the dual core 1.5 ghz 22w processor that was supposed to have been released?

Are there going to be any low wattage processors released this year?

Is there anyway to overclock the current processor or underclock the 45 watt processors through software?

    Thanks

The 3250e was cancelled, your best bet is the 4850e or the 5050e (both are 45 watts)

Underclocking will barely give you more battery power, but do not overclock a 45 watt processor used with this laptop. Its power supply is weak and the heatsink is not really made for anything over 45 watts.

If you need it more speed, replace the stock 5400rpm hard drive with a 7200rpm hard drive.

The emachines D620 series laptop is a socket AM2. The TL-60 is a socket S1 and will not work in this laptop's motherboard.

    hello there

first time owning and modding a laptop. i am impressed/shocked that the d620 has a am2 socket.im kinda glad i bought this laptop. ive already upgraded the ram by putting in two OCZ 1 gig pc-5300 sticks and switched it to win xp. i just ordered a 5050e after reading this thread and doing some reseach myself.
funny enough i just built a desktop barbone kit from tigerdirect and for the price its an extremely fast system. doing that got me thinking about the laptop and switching the processor.the processor should be here soon and ill post my results after i install it.

    cheers.

Please post your results when you put in the 5050e. I would like to see the CPU-z information from it.

I am thinking about buying the 5050e, but I want to know how it works out. The main reason is because I wan't to view HD flash videos online. Can you test that as well?

    Thanks.

5050e is installed and running like a charm. installed win xp pro 64 bit to be able to use all of its power. it stays at 40c after being on for about 6 hours and the highest it went while doing a big installation was between 46c and 52c. i used arctic silver heatsink paste. only thing i havent tested is how diminished the battery life is. either way this laptop runs twice as fast now!!

If you click the HD button in the bottom right corner of the video window, the HD version is displayed. I get about 1 frame per second on the stock processor.

Has anyone been able to test the power consumption of the computer in total? Also, what do you guys use to look at temperatures?

It says I have about one hour and twenty minutes on power saver mode if thats what you mean by power consumption and I've been using Core Temp 0.99. You can get it off of Cnet downloads.

I must admit this is a pretty cool laptop. You can stuff a 2.6Ghz dual core AMD in it, which is pretty much on par with the Opteron 185 I have. However my cpu is a 125 watt model, and yours is a 45watt. I am sure the 5050e beats any mobile AMD turion processor.

    Any benchmarks on the 5050e?
I know my Opteron 185 is around 15,800 MFLOPS

    Hi all
Excellent info, many thanks to all. !
I am considering the upgrade to a dual core, and the best value is certainly the 5050e at the mo (Europe)

I have a question though for you all reporting temps.
Using core temps, on the stock machine, I am getting average temps of 42c while surfing and nrmal use, the laptop does get hammered from time to time like high speed usenet downloads, news leecher etc and I can often get 100% cpu usage, the temps then are around 50 to 53. the laptop remains cool though. Some of the temps some people are reporting seem very low, are they with the machine on, doing nothing, or in actual use ?.
The only concern I would have is the power adapter, that does get quite warm (the docs say this is nomal), adding the 5050e would seem to not give a real increase in temp over what I get now, I am presuming the fan is regulating the temps to no more than mid 50's.. even with the 5050e so is very very efficient. so less battery life but no overall temp increase. thats how it seems from reading this full thread.
How hot is your external psu getting when the processor is upgraded ?, compared to what it was before.
Am running xp pro, am looking at the 5050e and 2 gb memory to allow dual channel operation.
My wifie has just gone to get another today at 280 euros, what a superb buy they are !.

    Joe.

Just out of interest, I was having issues playing back 720 hd video (XVID), with slightly jerky frame rates.
Swapped out the single SODIMM for 2 1 gig units borrowed from my Dell XPS 1710. unbelievable difference, smooth as silk now, I dont think its the extra memory, just that fact that its dual channel now.
So a first upgrade for these machinies would be to go for dual channel memory, amazing difference. The mobo chipset was designed to utilise this anyway, so by using a single sodimm we are crippling the unit a bit.

Great fun... might add the blueray drive from the dell as well, (the dell is 'laid up' :) awaiting a new inverter for the display (it packed up 3 days out of warranty yuck !..)

Am using the new catalyst 9.3 ati drivers and the avivo codecs and it seems a great performance increase over the supplied ati drivers.

Joe.. sorry for all the posts :) .. just having fun with a super little machine.

    To add more :D

I am getting far more realistic temp results with CPUz Hardware monitor (free)
It gives core temp on the processor (around 22c) Hard disk (Around 44c) and two temp points on the main board (where I dont know - they are ACPI derived TZS0 and TZS1, these hover at around the 40c mark.

core temp shows an incorrect cpu temp, by the look of things.

This is the stock machine with just added dual channel ram.
Would be interested in any dual core modded machine reports with CPUz Hardware Monitor ?

    Cheers

    Joe.

    Hi
Ive recently brought a eMD620, everything stock so far apart from an extra 2gb ram stick.

I was wondering if anyone has replaced the thermal compound on the CPU while keeping the original CPU. The reason im asking is that the fan is always running even whilst idle (T ~38C ) and i'm hoping better thermal compound will let it run quieter.

Also I replaced the bundled Vista installation with a clean one from a retail disk and my experience index for Graphics: Aero has dropped from 3.2 to 3.0 could someone tell me what version graphics drivers come as standard.

    Hi Kye
    http://support.emachines.com/em/driver/nb/d620.html
Use this link for the original drivers for both XP and VISTA, the US site link to the graphics driver is broken !. I would suggest you dl all the original drivers and keep them safe.
If you have just added a 2 gig dimm to the unit along with the original 1 gig you have an unbalanced system, more ram, but not optimal performance, ideally, the ram modules should be identical in size and type to make use of dual channel. but unlikely to be the cause of your problem, you could take out the extra stick and try it. !
    Re thermal compound etc. -
Use CPUz Hardware monitor to look at your temps.
You will find the cpu is not the heat culprit in a standard unit. the Hard disk and mobo are. !.
Also, where are you, what are the ambient temps like, at the mo, our boat (which we live on) is in Portugal (I'm a Brit), temp at the mo is 26c, processor core at 32c, mobo temps from acpi at 49c HD at 47c, fan running. but virtually inaudible. I had to stick my ear to the back of the unit to check lol.. Last night, running some HD video, the ambient temps dropped to around 12c, the processor was running around 75% at 22c, the mobo temps at 33c and the hd at 44c. It seems to be a very very good cooling system. I have laptops in the past that would get too hot underneath to keep on your 'lap' .. this justs gets slightly warm.
If you want to change the heatsink transfer medium, use thermal pads, as said in this thread, the pad is more resilient, but check the transfer rating of the pads first !, there are good and bad. for a normal paste, use arctic silver or similar, personally, I prefer pads. I doubt the manufacturer used an inferior product, or, on the stock cpu, the fan run can be decreased by changing anything.
    Joe.

Thanks for the info, using CPUz Hardware monitor the temperature is cycling between 34C and 46C as the fan comes on and off. Ambient T is 10C (Im in New Zealand). I think ill take your advice and not mess with the cooling at the moment.

I'm getting another stick of ram for a different laptop so I might have a play with dual channel to see if it makes a difference.

Someone was saying a while back about adding a card reader. I had a go at opening it up, didnt manage to get it commpletely apart but was able to peer in.
There is a nice big empty space next to the optical drive that could fit a card reader or bluetooth module providing there are spare usb points on the motherboard. Given the number that show up in device manager im sure there will be.

    Hi Kye
Is the temp you quote the core ? or the acpi monitor / hd etc ?
Also, you may have a noisy fan ?, mine is so quiet even when on that I can only hear it if I focus on it.

Re the card reader, it would be interesting, but I can easilly use my usb link from my camera instead, I found I hardly used the card reader on other machines. If any one does it it would be good to know though.

There is an interesting little issue with this machine I have noticed, mught be worth another thread. running the latest vlc for hd video, there is an issue with the wifi unit (this one is atheros, my wifes unit, bought from the same store and batch, is broadcom and I havent tested it on that yet), but... I was getting 100 % cpu usage running hd video and non smooth playback, the culprit is the wifi unit, you must leave it ON, go figure, the usage drops to around 65 to 70 % then with smooth playback, if you turn off the wifi with the fron switch, or even remove the driver completely, it goes back to 100% cpu usage.. seems like a minor bios issue. the work around is leave the internal wifi on. this may effect other high cpu usage programs as well. If your cpu is getting hammered, try turning the wifi on..
Will test it on the other unit with the broadcomm wifi and see if it makes a difference there too.

hya guys, i just got me 5050e brisbane, installed and running amazingly! the temps are staying below 41C on both cores so its going great, ill attach the cpu file here to look at.

Interesting, your dump shows the core at only apx 1Ghz ?, so it must have throttled.
What version of cpuz are you using, try 1.5. also try running some processes to show the true core speed please.
Also, a dump using hardware monitor from CPUz would be good, or a screen shot. thanks.

    Joe.

Ok, I have stripped the machine ready for the upgrade. and noticed the following.
I am "doubtful" about the use of thermal pads on the processor, the reasons being as follows.
In the stock machine, the processor to heatsink is compound paste, the video to heatsin (I presume its the video ?) is thermal pad.

If you go the pad route on the processor, then you risk the spacing between the video chip and heatsink being incorrect.

Of course, there are differing sizes of thermal pads, I have the 3m high heat sink capacity pad sheet, 3 mm thick, but highly compressible. if one used the pads ont he processor, then the spacing between the heatsink and video chip would need a larger pad ?
I intend to use a 3mm 3M thermal pad on the video, but standard arctic silver on the processor assembly which would seem to be ok. I accept the arguments re pads v compound, but in this case one could end up with an issue with the video cooling.. the stock machine, I just stripped and replaced, uses paste on the processor to heatsink and a pad on the video. I must confess I intend to use the same on the 5050e to retain the appropriate spacings. however, the compound will be replaced with artic silver 5, the video thermal pad with 3M high sink pad.. (the pads are about 20 euros a sheet !) .
it seems the safest way to me. if one uses pads between processor and sink, then one risks an inappropriate gap between the video chip and sink ?

    Joe.
Any objective comments re this approach appreciated. ?
    Joe.

    Hi Sir
Dont know the specific machine, but if it has an AM2 socket, and the 25650E then go for it.!

Ok, to the others here, have done the upgrade to the 5050E, using artic silver on the processor and a thermal pad on the (I presume) video chip. all ok so far.
    Heres what I have noticed..

Using ddr2 800 ram, 2 sticks, 2 gigs, the ram speed is increased, (Now at 370.5 Mhz !..) the bloody thing is well rapid, the 5050 E performs great.
there are few heat issues, but none too important. My 'cure', and be gads, this WILL invalidate any warrnaty ... :) is to make a small inlet port on the right side of the machine next to the usb sockets, well, inbetween the usb sockets and the lan connector.
The 2 cores never really go more than 50C, they usually hover around 40 - 45C.
The problem seems to be the ACPI TZS0 and 1 readings (using cpuz hardware monitore (coretemp gives incorrect readings, So I gave up on that).

I dont know where the ACPI Temp Zone sensor 1 / 2 is measuring the temp, but this has increased to around 60 to 70C, the fan now runs at a higher rate, but everything stays cool enough.
It would seem like the main heat is from the heat sink assembly itslef, the hd remains around 40 - 47 C, the other culprit for heat is the wifi unit, that gets pretty warm as does the ram.
Most times the laptop is, in my case, on my lap. not on a table etc, so the lower vent intakes can be obscured. adding a vent to the right side near the heatsink seems like a good wat to allow air to circulate in a better way, aint dont it yet, but will.
NOW, using DIVX player and HD vids, the processors are running around 9 to 10 % only.. superb playback, also use the avivo codecs for the ati 1250.
Gave up on VLC, it only seems to use one core !.. divx player uses both.. will now do anything I want of it.

The machine is a real flyer, I just think it would be better with a small intake air port on the side near the heat sink rather than rely on the underside intakes
    Joe

Always be punctual in maintaining proper CPU temperature as it would certainly cause multiple problems between computer components..

    HI Steve, yes, absolutely. !
I at first added extra cooling pads to disspipate the heat to the under cover metal screen, but have now removed them as they actually make matters WORSE, not better.
I really think there is no real problems with heat on this conversion, but, to get temps down to a more acceptable level the intake port on the right side of the unit will be beneficial.
    Will report back when done..
    Joe.
