Hello,
I have HP 8760w with i7 2960XM CPU.
The temps are raising up to 90-91C after hour of gaming (Far Cry 4).
My thermal paste is Noctua HT N1.
Is this in acceptable temp frames or it is too much? What is your opinion?

My 2920XM is overclocked to 4.4GHz full time 4 cores, I do not even reach that temperature. You really need liquid metal thermal compound to keep the XM class chips cooljaybee83 likes this.

@mirage_bg IMO Kryonaut is the best non-conductive thermal paste, worth a try before switching to liquid metal.

Would you advise me what is the best way to apply it on the CPU and GPU? To spread it on the core with finger or to put a stripe on the middle of the CPU and X-shape on the middle of the GPU and let the heatsink do its job..

@mirage_bg I personally prefer to use spreader which is included with the smaller sized Kryonaut syringe.
I do not recommend using a finger - even if you clean it with IPA beforehand, oils will still get into the paste. -

@mirage_bg Kryonaut is better. Whether it is worth the higher price or not, is up to you.

kryonaut performs better, but not by much. Gelid GC Extreme is still at the top three of high performance pastes, with differences of just 1C when compared to kryonaut
so in the end just go with whats cheaper at your location. they will both perform noticeably better than the Noctua though!
as for application: since the sandy bridge mobile CPUs are bare/naked die, its actually better to do a thin line along the length of the CPU die and let the pressure of the heatsink do the rest. not a big fan of the spatula method, since 1) it uses way too much thermal paste and 2) higher likelihood of introducing tiny air bubbles. -

for the gpu die ive always used a double rice grain spot of paste. x method with thin lines is highly efficient in coverage and avoiding air bubbles but i tend to reserve that for larger areas (like a cpu heatspreader on a desktop cpu)

I tried Kryonaut, still high temps on my CPU and GPU - up to 96C for i7 2960XM and 86C for GTX 980m...

have u checked the paste spread on CPU and GPU? take off the heatsinks and take a picture of the paste residues on the chips and the heatsinks. that will tell us how well the heatsinks contact the chips and if uve applied sufficient paste.Papusan likes this.

O/C isn’t an option on HP 8760w with its locked bios. -

Undervolt the GPU, might cause temps to lower a decent bit because of the shared heatsink -
I’ve done this. GPU is UV to 0.981V. Not much of a difference though...

It’s not a shared heatsink....also cannot undervolt maxwell via software, only via Vbios mod, very hard to do to get it working without throttle. Cannot undervolt 2920XM, no FIVR, that was introduce with haswell onwardsjaybee83 likes this.

My GPU throttles from 1126 to 940-960 sometimes for a short period of time during gaming. Is this happening because of the undervolt I did or because of the temps (83-86C). The vbios is with unlimited power target. -
Probably because vbios mod, I could never quite get it to work when I modded it myself, random throttle during heavy load would always happen. Only Prema knows how to do it right
Really you need liquid metal on the CPU, GPU needs phobya nanogrease extreme. Make sure thermal pads are not too thick -

Do not be afraid, just be careful when applying. I was nervous my first time too, now I use it on everything. Phobya = kryonaut, only better option is liquid metal, safer to use on CPU than GPU. I would leave GPU alone for now, get CPU under control with liquid metal first.
My vBIOS was made by Prema, unfortunately I cannot distribute as per his terms. -
your spread looks just fine and good amount of paste as well. your cooling system just seems to be overpowered, which makes sense considering you only have one fan to work with...true UV isnt possible on 2nd gen, u could try underclocking though via intel xtu, thatll automatically lower the vcore as well.
liquid metal in a laptop is always risky. if you do it, best to use a foam dam barrier around the cpu die just to be on the safe side.

Is it safe to use a thermal pads on the ram modules on the underside of the card, this way the heat will be transferred to the mobo.
What do you think? -
Also, do I need to remove the anti-dust filter under the fan to improve the air circulation?

It was special made, and regardless all his stuff may no longer be distributed. You can add thermal pads to the bottom memory modules, use something thin like 0.5mm as to not crush the card. I would remove the fabric, it really serves no purpose, the dust will find its way inside no matter what.mirage_bg likes this.

Removing the fabric and putting the thermal pads on the ram modules on the underside of the gpu together with repasting both cpu and gpu with kryonaut did the job!
After 40 min of Far Cry 4 where the temps before were 97C and 86C for the cpu and gpu respectively, now they dropped off to 86C and 75C! 11C drop difference!

Could be better, but still a good improvement. I wouldn’t be comfortable running a CPU at that kind of temperature, not out of fear for the CPU, but for the mosfets feeding it power.

May be an additional heatsinks on the mosfets could help a bit?

No, I am Alienware + Razer only. Additional heatsinks may help if you can squeeze them in there, or just slap some thermal pads on there so they can make contact with the chassis

Oh..that explains the fact you are used to lower cpu temperatures. There is no chance at slightest that my HP can handle the temps even close to AW.
Even the 45W CPU is running around 78-82 on a cooling solution on systems like 87x0W. -

Razer runs notoriously hot, I was bouncing off upper 80s-low 90s before liquid metal, big big big difference. in my opinion liquid metal is always worth it if you have a copper heatsink. If it is aluminum, forget about itPapusan likes this.

No, it looks like you used excessive thermal compound but die contact area is actually quite good. I think it really is a good candidate for liquid metal.

I'm absolutely confused.
So to start things off, going by others temperatures is absolutely dumb because it has to be the same cooling solution as it is, comparing HP cooling to AW, clevo etc. is dumb.
Your cooling solution is meant for ~30Watts CPU and maybe ~75Watts GPU. Without revamping your cooling solution you won't have good temps regardless of thermal compound. Either you create your own cooling solution (very risky) or you find a modder who is experienced with these things to create a new cooling solution for you.
Also liquid metal doesn't do anything. Liquid metal performs about the same as high hquality thermal compound. I've tested it myself and others have tested it as well. -
Of course liquid metal does something. The thermal conductivity is triple that of standard TIM, in effect eliminating the bottleneck if transferring heat from the die to the heatsink. What it doesn’t do is magically give a higher thermal capacity, meaning if the heatsink is “saturated” with heat or heat soaked, it’s going to be bottlenecking the system. We overcome that limit by using higher CFM fans or just ensuring the existing fan is running properly, or feeding the system cooler air.
His CPU heatsink is already dual pipe, better than what Alienware shipped for M18x with CPU going up to 2840qm. Original m18x R1 2920xm heatsink is also double pipe. I’m sure with liquid ultra the temps will drop. If he could source better factory fans, that would also help. Dell is notorious for using different CFM fans in the same models, maybe HP does the same.Papusan likes this. -
Wrong. HP cooling solution for 87x0W is meant for 55W CPU (dual heat-pipe) and ~100W GPU (dual heat-pipe).

Absolutely false. Go ahead, puchase liquid metal and see how your temps are still high as skyscrapers, then tell me again the cooling solution is made for 55W CPU and 100W GPU.
Create a custom cooling solution or kill your notebook with your temps.

You described exacly the problem why liquid metal doesn't improve anything when compared to other high quality tims. The thermal conductivity bottleneck shifts to other types of bottlenecks very quickly. -
