When is the next update for the 17" ZBook going to be?
Are the gen 8 CPUs worth the wait?

They were announced this morning: https://press.ext.hp.com/us/en/press-releases/2018/hps-new-high-performance-workstations.html

It looks like a pretty big visual redesign. All models look like the Zbook x2 tablet now.

Notable changes on the 17 G5:
    • It has an optical drive again
    • The 1600x900 display is IPS now
    • The Dreamcolor UHD panel is now 10-bit (8+2 according to specs), and a bit brighter I think
    • Touchscreen option is now 4k instead FHD
    • Refreshed Pascal Quadros, including P1000/P2000 to replace M1200/M2200 on the low end (these aren't on nVidia's site yet so not sure on specs), and P4200/P5200 Max-Q on the high end
    • Tool less access panel is back again (like Zbook 17 G1/G2)
    • Mini-displayport added for display out (one less dongle)
    • Optical drive bay can take a M.2 storage module which supports up to 10TB
    • Improved webcam?

The G4 has an access panel. It was only the G3 that didn't.

Performance wise, I expect the Quadro P1000 to be a bit lower than a GTX 1050 (due to lower clocks, most likely). I imagine it will be the low end of the mid-tier Quadros

Its an ugly silver laptop and not very professional looking. It has the same dreamcolor panel but with a built in color calibrator? Maybe the same dreamcolor or with the thinkpad idea. 4 nvme slots f9r the 10TB. It has a strange new image sensor trackpad. Ive no idea what that is. 6 core intel with optane memory? They brought back the blueray drive also. 4k for gorilla glass corner to corner with ambient light at 4k. NFC. Lion polymer battery now.720 camera with IR and windows hello.quadro p5200 16gb

HP has really disappointed me in recent years, its like they are going back to their pre-compaq days.
For that price they could at least include new standards.

Hate to say this but will propably jump ship with the way HP is going.

I`ve repeatedly wrote to hp and report them that TB3 does not support the Displayport 1.4 and asked them to make a separate output mini-displayport 1.4 in ZBOOK, in the hp sit deaf and uncomprehending persons

It seems that the 17" still rocks MXM, for those of you that are interested.

Yup the p5200m so no real big difference there. The screen change and the 10gb is the big kaboom

Actually it's the screen AND the P5200, while waiting to see the storage configuration, as I've found some confusing information so far. The P5200 gains some extra cores and clocks, so it gets between 1070 and 1080 in terms of gaming performance. I guess that would be the Max-Q version* with ~110W TGP, still nice though. Also it seems that it has tool-less disassembly, so that would be interesting.

    * The Max-P version is expected to be ~150W TGP and given that the G5 only comes with 200W PSU, I seriously doubt that it would be this one.

Still MXM, just lower power one. Just like there are quite literary as much as 1070 versions as the laptop models that have it. It's not even funny.

Can we fit any MXM card in this laptop? Like 980M MXM card from my MSI GT80 for example.
I asked HP sales person to customize 17 G4 and she said I can only select Quadro cards.

Through HP Quadros and Radeon Pro/FirePro only. Aftermarket - pretty much everything you can stuff in there with a few exceptions. And to fully answer your question - you can run the 980m as well. It might lack automatic fan control though, but you can do it manually with HWInfo.

Dont forget you need to trick the drivers to install on non HP GPU's
For me the Displayport to HDMI cables stopped working after changing the gpu

Is this for the zbook 17 g5? If so I'm planning on buying one with an i9 8950hk, Quadro p3200 & 4k uhd dreamcolor panel. I noticed that lower than p3xxx mxm series from hp have a non standard mxm layout where the memory chips are clumped next to the die. For the heatsink to be 'normal' I'm getting the p3200 spec.

So my plan was to take out the p3200 and slap a gtx 1070 into the laptop and see if it boots. If so I'll be keeping this laptop, if not well I'll buy a p5200 mxm from taobao of course :D

HP sticking to mxm is the best thing I've seen, it means we can put in any mxm cards we want, as long as there is no whitelists!
