Hi! Yesterday a coworker dropped my elitebook :(
I want to know if my warranty is still valid for repairs outside of the incident.
My display frame bent a little but there is nothing broken. Theres some metal dent but it works ok and the problems seems to be aesthetic only. I'll post photos when I can. Do you have any experiences with this?

My coworker won't pay for the repair since he argues that the machine works flawlessly so I want to know my options.

Does it have on-site warranty? Accidental
Many times these techs will let it slide, whereas the HP service center may question it.
Nonetheless, being an elitebook it survived and HP treats these cases much better than if it was a consumer pavilion.

The person that dropped it should at least pay you for DIMINISHED value due to the damage.
If it was mine, i would purchase replacement parts via eBay and restore the condition.
At that point, you will NOT have an issue with warranty.

If you have Accidental coverage, no problem at all.

Ask if he would mind if you kicked his car, i am sure it will run & drive just fine afterwords ;)

Sadly no accidental coverage, I do have onsite warranty (2 years left) but I don't have a problem right now to call them. And I dont want them thinking that the drop caused it. It's not that bad. As soon as I have a camera I'll take pictures of it. In the meantime I'll start saving for a Toughbook or an ATG/XFR Dell Latitude. I don't know if I can get the accidental warranty now and get them to fix the issue after a period (2 months or so) so they wont suspect I did it before getting the warranty. Can you get the accidental warranty anytime or does the notebook needs to be brand new?

He's actually reconsidering at the moment. He was an when it just happened but now we are thinking what to do. The repair might be very expensive with Hp. Is it possible to repair it ourselves and Hp not noticing it?

My display panel and top cover have been replaced before so many screws were touched from my factory state but the bottom part of the case was damaged so we might need to change that too.

ATM he'll pay for the Accidental Damage Warranty if it is not an outrageous price.(And let Hp handle the damage after some time) I'll call soon to investigate price and availability (it might not be possible to acquire the accidental warranty).

Usually it is not possible to add an accidental damage warranty after you bought the machine; you can extend the regular warranty though (as long as the notebook is in warranty).

Sorry to hear about your notebook; any chance you could post a picture so we could see what you are talking about?

Actually with HP you can purchase accidental warranty after you bought the laptop, its called the HP care packs. They have many types of different care packs available, onsite service, accidental, extended warranty, etc. etc.

I don't know the prices on the HP care packs but I would call HP or better yet use their online chat support (much faster) when you can, buy the accidental care pack and some months later just say it got dropped. HP never questions anything when it comes to elitebooks, they just send you a drop box then mail it in to their repair shop in Memphis, TN. I tend to deal with HP warranties a lot, you might have to wait a bit longer since your dealing with the outer case of the laptop. But when I deal with HP for regular parts or service, I mail the laptop in on Monday and its back by Wed. or Thur. 90% of the time but with you it might take them until the following week.

Thank you very much. That info was really useful. I'll see if I can still get the warranty. Anyway I am getting a pretty decent deal on a Toughbook CF-52 to replace my elitebook. I'll miss its size and portability but I can't keep both machines. I'll try the Toughbook and decide after that which one I'll be keeping.

Wow, thanks for the info. In that case I may upgrade the warranty to accidental myself. The 8740w is a bit too expensive to leave unprotected. When I bought the machine, the accidental warranty put me just above my budget so I had to forgo it.

It seems I can't get an Hp TotalCare Pack for my elitebook here in Mexico. Maybe its different in the USA but they said I had 60 days after purchase to get one. Maybe its good advice if you just buy your computer to get the wararanty (I should have done this). So let's try with the Toughbook then.

I'll miss my 2530p dearly :( but my coworker agreed to pay for it fully after this news so I'll be rocking from my Toughbook in the future. Let's see how Panasonic supports is. Hp Business support rocks! Never had a problem with them!

oh your in Mexico, hmm yea HP operates much differently down there. I have no clue on that, never dealt with elitebooks in Mexico. But your your welcome on the info guys.

I once had a 2530p too, one of the best little machines I ever had. Gave it to my little sister for school work, she dropped it within 1 month and got a Mac Book. oh well....

Regardless of what anyone else says...

Make him pay. Make him pay more than the repair cost. Technically he voided your warranty which is priceless.
