    Hi All

Just purchased my first EliteBook and am loving it so far! I notice that the gradient colors look blocky and dithered, is that normal or do I have a defective screen?

I've linked to a picture taken from my phone as well a screenshot from the computer to show what it's supposed to look like.

From phone -- left bottom corner, the gradient is very blocky [close up]

Here's a screenshot of that area

That's the Ubuntu 10.10 background, right? Are you using an ATI card with the open source drivers?

I ask because I think I might know what's wrong. I have an 8740w with a DreamColor screen and an ATI card. The screen is beautiful, and it works perfectly with the proprietary fglrx drivers. However, the open source drivers have a colorspace problem, and they show similar banding in the same color gradient. Also, some of the [intentionally blocky] bars on this page show entirely incorrect colors at the dark end, which make dark color gradients especially ugly and disjointed, just like the ones in your photos.

So, in short, check to see if it's a graphics driver problem.

if it is windows, check if your display settings are on powersafe or maximum performance.
i had this problem once, then i switched to maximum performance and now its gone.
