    2540p Fan Control or... make it silent

    Hi you Nerds ;)

    Here's a little quick and dirty way to keep your HP 2540p's silent and don't run into the problem of overheating. I tried these setting for over an hour on Prime95 to make sure the CPU won't overheat and shut the power off.

    My I7 640LM CPU with a TDP of 25 Watts (see IntelĀ® Core? i7-640LM Processor (4M Cache, 2.13 GHz)with SPEC Code(s)SLBMK) has a Maximal Junction Temperature of 105 Degree Celsius before it shut's down. To have a little buffer I configured the fan to about 80-85 Degree Celsius at max load.

    Make sure to check how much cooling your cpu needs! This is just an tested example config for the 640LM in the 2540p and no other setup! You can damage your hardware if you do it wrong!

    Tools you need:

    • HWinfo32 in the latest version with LUT Table. I used the version hw32_370_1175.zip

    • Prime 95 as load generator to check if config is ok under load. I used the version p64v262.zip

    • Windows 7 Task Planner to start HWinfo32 in the background

    So let's get started:
    Install hwinfo32 to your system (mine was Windows 7 64bit). Go to the page Sensor Status and hit the little fan button in the bottom of the page. If it's not there, you run a old version of HWinfo.

    Switch the mode from Auto to Manual, adjust the Manual Fan speed to be below the two ee's of speed to have the fan running as starting value.
    Now you can only edit the Temp3 PWM Fields (Mode is still auto). For me the fan was inaudible around 1807rpm, therefore I found the following values for me to be optimal. Values lower than 940ish seem to stop the fan completely, make sure to check the HWinfo threads as well.


    • PWM 8; Fan 1807
    • PWM16; Fan 1807
    • PWM 32; Fan 2507 (starts about 60 Degrees Celsius)
    • PWM 48; Fan 3510 (starts about 70 Degrees Celsius)
    • PWM 64; Fan 5585 (starts about 80 Degrees Celsius)
    • PWM 80; Fan 7021 (never reached that state!)
    • PWM 96; Fan 7021
    • PWM 112; Fan 7021

    Attention:
    I only changed the Fan speeds not the PWM table. It was already quiet enough for me and no further tweaking was needed. The Temperature values are only raw guesses/estimates. Make sure to monitor you CPU-Temperature and that the values are kind of correct. Speedfan for example showed in my setup always 10 to 20 degrees less as CPU-Temperature, so I used multiple programs.

    To make it automatically run, I used the Windows 7 Task planner. As soon as my system boots up, it starts the process independent from on my username with highest privilege. HWinfo I've configured with Display sensors at startup and minimalize sensors and main window on start. The autostarting will be done by windows and therefore the HWinfo autostart feature is not necessary. I only made this to not have to click yes every boot due the UAC feature.

    At this point you HP 2540p should be beautifully quiet and one of the best notebooks on the market ;) Big thanks go to Martin Malik (Realix) who created HWinfo32 and makes all this possible.
