You can see the screw holes in that picture? On the sides, two each. If they aren't directly accessible from outside edge, maybe the top or bottom should be screwed off first. Hard to say exactly, since all I have are the pictures :)

That looks like the kind of drive bay a Thinkpad uses. They're supposed to be used with the drive caddy, that has little tabs that stick out that will go under the enclosure's tabs.

You may try simply screwing the screws into the drive itself to see if it works. Still, the faceplate won't match.

Take out your current optical drive, it should have some kind of adapter attached that could be screwed on the caddy.

    Hello ivanox1972,

The forum member (KLF) who suggested you take out your current optical drive to confirm the correct hard drive bracket and "Upgrade Bay Cradle" is correct. These are the parts you need to add an additional hard drive. I can't confirm from your photos that the caddy you purchased on eBay is correct...or not...for your HP 8540.

Look at the photos I posted of the "hard drive bracket" and "HP Upgrade Bay Cradle" that I used to replace my CD drive with a 2nd hard drive on my 8740W. My new 2.5" hard drive mounted into the "hard drive bracket" with the screws supplied and that bracket mounted into the HP "Upgrade Bay Cradle"...which slides into the Upgrade Bay drive slot on my HP 8740W. I'm not sure if your 8540 uses a similar drive bracket and cradle or not. These parts are available directly from HP or from various HP vendors.

I purchased the "Upgrade Bay Cradle" from NewmodeUS at Hard drive caddy for HP 8530p, 8530w, 8540p, 8540w, 8730w, 8740w [CQNC6400] - $28.95 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks

    I hope this helps you.

What first looked like screw holes in that picture, could they be used to fix hdd in that bay? I mean, put the hdd connector first to the caddy and push it in place, those bumps (that I thought as holes first) look like they would fit in the screw holes on the hdd itself and keep it in place? Since the drive is pretty secure inside the laptop it might not need screws.

I have older hdd bay inside the advanced dock and I've used small pieces of tape on each side of the drive to keep hdd in place, no screws.
